Kelvin relaxes while listing to a favorite book, Kelvin volunteers on Wednesday afternoons at the Southwest Harbor Public Library on Mt. Desert Island in Maine. The library’s program is called Reader Dog Downeast, and Kelvin began visiting the children there on Valentine’s Day 2004. He and his handler began with a Valentine’s Day pawtographed card event. They work with the children in one-on-one sessions, and have recently begun conducting writing workshops for 4th graders. Books about Chesapeake Bay Retrievers include:

Kelvin is a 7-year-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Sometimes called a “Chessie,” this breed was developed to hunt waterfowl under adverse weather and water conditions, often having to break ice during many strenuous multiple retrieves. Its double coat consisting of a short, harsh, waivy outer coat and a dense, fine, wooly undercoat contains an abundance of natural oil and is ideal for protecting a Chesapeake in icy rugged conditions. Despite it’s size and hardiness and the fact that it loves an active life, including a daily romp or swim, the breed prefers more than anything to spend time with its family. Most Chesapeakes have a bright and happy disposition. They are valued for their intelligence, quiet good sense, and affectionate protective nature.
