Dinner Table Discussion #2
Discuss this observation with an adult member of your family and submitt a one page - (typed - Times New Roman font 12 pt) summary of your discussion and conclusions.
READ: The First Amendment which guarantees freedom of expression and freedom of religion and prevents the government from establishing a national religion.
OBERVATION: Despite the guarantees offered by this Amendment, over the last 40 years the Supreme Court has ruled that prayer and religious symbols (such as the Nativity or the Ten Commandments) have no place in schools, courthouses, public buildings or property. Yet, Congress is allowed to open its session with non-denominational prayers, several national monuments and buildings contain Christian symbols, oaths of office are sworn with a hand on the Bible, our currency states "IN GOD WE TRUST" , our Presidents routinely ask God to bless America and our "Pledge of Allegiance" declares us "one nation under God".
DISCUSS: If you could discuss these inconsistencies with any of the Justices of the Supreme Court what would you tell them or what would you ask? If you wanted to change these decisons by a Constitutional Amendment, what would you want that Amendment to say? |
