Subject: [14488] Orchids and ISOLITE

Hello fellow OLDers.  Its been awhile since my last postings, but I recall
mentioning my preference for inorganic media. I have been growing orchids
for approximately 15 years and during that time I have tried bark,
sphagnum, cork, charcoal, styrofoam peanuts, lava rock and various
combinations, etc.
A few months ago I read about a medium called ISOLITE.
After requesting and promptly receiving an informative packet which -
pleasant surprise - came with samples, I had to try it.  Results: I have
never repotted so quickly, easily and safely. I actually enjoyed it.  No
cutting or bruising of plants or self. This stuff is smooth, light and
clean. I have noticed no setbacks from repotting. No signs of shock and
nothing in growth was impeded despite the fact that all had been repotted
just two to four months prior to this move. And, I'm getting lots of new
growths.  My babies just plain look satisfied and happy - roots and all.
Growing in ISOLITE are: Masdevallia, Phragmipedium, Paphiopedilum,
Bulbophyllum and Lycaste.  Phalaenopsis will be introduced this week.  I
liked this product so much - I had to have more orchids! :)  The only
chore is unpotting any new acquisitions which won't happen with ISOLITE.
The roots don't stick to it.  As for my watering/feeding
schedule/proportions:  The only thing that has changed is the frequency.
ISOLITE has pores that hold the water, but you can't overwater.  The
excess beyond its holding capacity merely runs off. The cylindrical
pellets come in different sizes.  I am using 10mm.  It does not
compact and, by the look of things, the increased aeration is manifest.
It is a diatomaceous earth-based, porous ceramic that can be washed, baked
and reused.  I don't know if orchids were in mind when this product was
created, but they sure are proving to be quite a match.
