155mm - Long Tom - self propelled artillery - 937th Field Artillery - Korea 14 July 1953

Jim Clark of Chicago, IL <Newfordfdc@aol.com> provided the following pictures of the 155mm Long Tom self propelled artillery.

The then Sgt. Clark was with the 937th Field Artillery which had been repositioned to just north of Pukjong-ryong on road 117A about 12 July 1953 in support of the ROK Capital Division. He wrote, "It was the monsoon season in the Kumhwa valley and I recall that our L19 observation aircraft were not "up" due to weather, and radar flash and sound observation posts were not effective due to the humidity."

NOTE: "A" battery of the 937th is mislabeled on "page 642" as the 935th.

"All but one regiment (19th) of 6th ROKA Division did a "retrograde" and didn't stop until they were far south, leaving 14 US artillery Bns. who were defending them left to fend for themselves.  The 555th F.A. (105mm) were just down the road from my unit (937th Field Arty-155mmgun/self propelled) and were overrun with 40% casualties and many (taken as ) POW(s).  It was most embarrassing to the ROKA and most ex GI's from the battle are bitter about what happened."

"I am attaching a photo of one of our guns photographed at dawn on the 14th of July in support of the Capital ROK Division (what there was left of it from the previous nights attack)."
