David E. Lourie, P.E., R.B.P., Elected President of ASFE: April 2009
- David E. Lourie, P.E., R.B.P., is the new president of ASFE/The Best People on Earth, a not-for-profit association of "earth-engineering" firms that employ 150,000 individuals worldwide. Welcomed into office at ceremonies during ASFE's annual meeting in Washington, D.C., Mr. Lourie is the 39th individual to serve as ASFE's president and chair of the group's board of directors.
Established in 1969, ASFE develops programs, services, and materials its member firms use to enhance the quality of their business and professional practices and thereby "prosper through professionalism." Member firms provide professional "earth-engineering" services; i.e., geotechnical, environmental, and civil/infrastructure engineering; construction-materials engineering and testing; brownfields revitalization and applied sustainability; geology, biology, and ecology; cultural-resources consulting; and construction and program management.

Lourie Consultants
Selected to Provide Independent External Peer Review Services: 2008
- David Lourie, P.E., R.B.P., has been selected to provide IEPR services
for multiple Hurricane Storm Damage and Hurricane Risk Reduction System (HSDRRS)
projects in the Greater New Orleans area. These high-level review
efforts are part of the process by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)
and the US Congress to design, build, and operate a better system.

Lourie Consultants to
Provide Geotechnical Services for 850-ac Development: March 2008
- Lourie Consultants was selected to provide geotechnical services for a
proposed 850-ac mixed-used development project in St. Tammany Parish,
Louisiana. The undeveloped, wooded site with contain residences,
retail structures, school buildings, recreation features, and the related
infrastructure such as roads, utilities, and drainage. Site
characterization consisted of electric cone penetrometer (CPT) soundings
and soil borings. Geotechnical recommendations addressed site
preparation, fill selection and placement, impoundment seepage issues, and
shallow and deep foundation design, construction, and performance.

- David Lourie, P.E., Selected as Independent External Peer
Reviewer: May 2006
- David Lourie, P.E. was one of two geotechnical engineers on the nine
person external peer review committee assembled to review the preliminary technical report
prepared by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) New Orleans District
(NOD) and submitted to the United States Congress. The report was
part of the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration (LACPR) project
authorized by Congress in December 2005, when Congress issued
legislative directives to investigate and integrate hurricane risk
reduction and coastal restoration for south Louisiana. The July 2006
report contained the results of a comprehensive hurricane protection
analysis and design effort intended to provide "Category 5"
protection. The final report is due in December 2007. The external peer review committee comprised a total of nine
engineers and scientists who were charged with reviewing
the massive report and providing comments on a tight project schedule.

National Meeting: April 2006
- Stephanie Bialobok, P.G. and David Lourie, P.E., were invited to be panel
members at the ASFE/The Best People on Earth meeting in Nashville,
Tennessee in April 2006. The panel discussed disasters and the lessons
learned. Experiences from three distinctly different disasters were
presented and discussed.

- Lourie Consultants Returns
to the New Orleans Area: April 2, 2006
- Following its August 2005 evacuation due to Hurricane Katrina and its
subsequent office relocation in Lafayette, Louisiana, the firm returned to
the New Orleans area ready to play a key role in the rebuilding and future
growth of New Orleans and all of southeast Louisiana.

Establishes Temporary Office in Lafayette, Louisiana: September 2005
- The outpouring of help and concern from family, friends, and colleagues
has been extensive and nearly nonstop. After evaluating many generous
offers and working through various logistical issues, Lourie Consultants
has accepted a gracious offer from a client and fellow engineer. Tim
Mader, P.E., and his family and firm (Mader Engineering, Inc.) have
provided our firm and its personnel with living and working
facilities. We extend our deepest, most heart-felt thanks to Tim,
his family, and his employees. We also thank everyone who has helped
and prayed for us during these difficult and uncertain times.

Evacuates in Advance of Hurricane Katrina: August 28, 2005
- Hurricane Katrina forces area evacuation. Due to the threat posed
by Hurricane Katrina, Lourie Consultants has secured its offices, moved
project-related materials to an elevated off-site storage facility,
transported computers and active project files, and has evacuated the
area. Before departure, e-mails were sent to clients advising them
of the firms actions and providing contact information.
