Words from Our Interim Minister!

Greetings LRBC! Many of you may not know that I’m a “West Coaster” originally. I’m a native Californian who has enjoyed New England for more than a decade now.  There have been a few adjustments to make along the way and one of these has been the weather of course.  But even the winter, though certainly trying at times has not been a terribly bad experience (after I purchase boots, wool socks, gloves, hats, scarf, shovel, salt, etc!) In fact the change of seasons is now a highlight for me. In California we had only two seasons – cool and hot. What has been so grand about living in Rhode Island is the anticipation of the changing season, those 3-4 weeks every few months that transition us from one season of life to the next.  Whether it is winter to spring, spring to summer, summer to fall, or yes, even fall to winter, the change in the air along with the cycle of life in the plants and animals is itself a spiritual experience for me.  It drives me to contemplative moments in spite of my insistence on staying busy. I had never really seen leaves change their colors until I left California.  At least not like we see here in Rhode Island.  It was amazing for me.  There is something about the fall change that elicits wonder and meditation.  For that I am thankful.  But the fall is never long enough.  It abandons its beauty to make way for darker and icier days. There are many lessons for us in the change of the seasons, and truly the lessons that we learn from observing the seasons are gifts.  Graciously, these gifts that “recycle” themselves each year allow us repeated opportunities to consider the kind of God that creates a world where regular natural transformations seize our attention and point us back to our true source.  This fall there is something in the reds, oranges, and yellows that speak to us.  What we hear might be simple, or it might be profound. Regardless, whatever we receive from the beauty of the changing earth, let us enjoy all the benefits God intended in the sights, sounds, and smells of autumn.  These things remind us of our creator, and hint at something true about ourselves as well. This fall I’m going to once again enjoy some hot aromatic spiced tea in the mornings, gaze out the window, and consider what God has done.  May we enjoy and give thanks!

Mike

GREETINGS FROM LRBC SUNDAY SCHOOL

Nancy and I are thrilled to be back and are looking forward to an exciting year.  Our focus for the next three months is on the Bible stories connected with the Jesse Tree and Jesus’ family tree.  For each story, the children will make a symbolic ornament for our Jesse Tree at Sunday school and one for home.  They can be used on your own family Christmas tree.

We are trying to organize a field trip for fall – we’ll let you know when that is determined.  Parents will be asked to chaperone so we’ll make it fun for you also!

Nancy and I are teaching again this year, but there will be occasions when we will need extra help or substitutes.  Please let us know if you are interested – you would not need to plan any lessons just teach.

Our interim pastor, Mike, would like the children to participate in the scripture readings.  We will send a note home with the dates and the scripture for them to practice.

We have given the children folders to carry back and forth with any parent/teacher communications.  Please remind them to bring the folder back each week along with their Bible.

Any questions or suggestions, please don’t hesitate.  If you have a change of phone number or if you have an email address, please send it in.  It’s often easier to email then to phone.

My email:  susanclarke@cox.net or susanraeclarke@gmail.com.

My phone:  724-8878.

Thanks.

Peace,    Nancy and Susan

LRBC OUTDOOR CHAPEL

On Sunday, September 6th, we worshiped in the Outdoor Chapel for the last time this summer. Because of the rain most weekends, we were unable to hold our services out doors most of the summer. We did manage to get in a few beautiful Sundays in August.

Please remember the Outdoor Chapel is always open and what a great place to sit, relax and to meditate.
