GENESIS CHAPTER TWO ------------------- Verses 1, This leads us to believe that the first chapter is the manner in which the heavens (plural) and the earth were created and finished, and ALL the hosts of them. Verses 2-3, God had made the world in six days and rests on the seventh. He establishes the seventh day as a day which is set apart (sanctified). During the time that Moses lead the children of Israel out of Egypt, God rained manna from heaven for six days, but on the sixth day gave them enough for the Sabbath also. Verses 4, Uses the word CREATED and MADE. Here we have the first use of the name Jehovah(LORD) Elohiym(God). Verse 5-6, Shows that God made the plants as mature plants and not seeds that he planted, in the manner in which they are reproduced afterward. Not a man to till the ground shows that this is another view of the six days of creation, before man was made on the sixth day. Shows that before the flood, it did not rain, but the earth was watered with a mist. Verse 7, Man was formed from the dust of the ground, as a potter would from clay form a vessel. Ro 9:21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? God then breathed into Adam the breath (spirit) of life. Verses 8-9, Speaks of the garden called Eden, which was eastward, which later came to be known as Babylonia and Persia and is now Iraq and Kuwait. Here we have the first mention of the two trees. 1) The tree of life. Which he was allowed to eat and which gave him life. (Vs 16) 2) The tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Which he was forbidden to eat. (See vs 17) Verses 10-14, Speaks of a river that watered the garden, which had four heads. 1) Pison = Piyshown {pee-shone'} = "increase" It covered the land of Havilah ("circle"). A part of Eden through which flowed the river Pison (Araxes); was probably the Grecian Colchis, in the northeast corner of Asia Minor, near the Caspian Sea. 2) Gihon = "bursting forth" It compasseth the land of Ethiopia (Hebrew = Cush = "black"). 3) Hiddekel = Chiddeqel {khid-deh'-kel} = "rapid" Better known as the Tigris (the LXX equivalent). Coursed east toward Assyria. 4) Euphrates = "fruitfulness" The largest and longest river of western Asia; rises from two chief sources in the Armenian mountains and flows into the Persian Gulf. Verse 15, The man is put in the garden to dress (work, till) and to keep (have charge over) it. Verse 16-17, Commonly referred to as the Edenic Covenant. Adam was given charge over the garden, to work it and keep it. Also we saw earlier that he was to subdue the earth. He was commanded not to eat of ONE tree upon pain and penalty of death. This was a LAW or COMMANDMENT given to Adam. Death was not the mere result of eating a bad tree, play with fire and you get burned ("karma"), but the result of disobedience. Verse 6 of chapter 3 shows that it was good for food and could make one wise. It was sin that slew Adam. (spiritually and physically) Ro 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man SIN entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: {for that: or, in whom} Ro 5:17 For if by one man's OFFENCE death reigned by one;... What is sin? 1Jo 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. Death: spiritual and physical. Ro 5:12 tells us that DEATH passed upon all men due to Adam's sin. Eph 2:1 shows that the believer has been quickened from a spiritually dead state. Verse 18-22, Jehovah God makes woman from man. God makes an help meet (or fit) for him. 1Co 11:8 For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. 9 Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man. Goes on to say: 11 Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord. 12 For as the woman [is] of the man, even so [is] the man also by the woman; but all things of God. In these verses Adam names all the creatures, and sees that they all had a mate, but for him there was not found a help meet for him. Jehovah then forms the woman from Adam's rib. Verse 23-25, God institutes marriage. Called "woman" because she was taken out of Man. Marriage is the institution whereby a man and a woman become one flesh. Gen 2:25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. Jesus said, Mr 10:2 And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away [his] wife? tempting him. 3 And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you? 4 And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put [her] away. 5 And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. 6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. 7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; 8 And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. 9 What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
