GENESIS CHAPTER FIVE -------------------- Verse 1, This chapter is a genealogy of Adam through Seth all the way to Noah, which are 10 generations. Verse 2, "their name Adam" - The Hebrew word is not capitalized here and according to the Lexicon means "man." Verse 3, Seth is born after the likeness of Adam, and Adam is a fallen man now. In verse one we were told that God made man, that is the first man, in His own image, but man transgressed and lost much of what he once had. He still reasons, but from the fall onward, all men are born into this world with a sin nature; "totally depraved," spiritually dead in their sins. Adam could not convey God's image to his posterity, only his own image. Jesus said, "That which is born of the FLESH is FLESH; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." (Joh 3:6) Therefore a man must be "born again" if he is to ever fellowship with God again. He had two sons before this time, Cain and Abel. But Cain slew Abel, and Christ would come through the line of Seth. See Lu 3:23-38 - From Christ through Joseph, who was the head, back to Adam through Seth. Lu 3:38 Which was [the son] of Enos, which was [the son] of SETH, which was [the son] of ADAM, which was [the son] of God. Verse 4 - 5, Adam lived another 800 years and died when 930 years old. The first man, the federal head of his posterity, died. Heb 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: The sentence of Gen 2:17 had come to full fruition. Verse 7 - 32, Seth (912), Enos (905), Cainan (910), Mahalaleel (895), Jared (962), Enoch (365, translated), Methuselah (969), Lamech (777), Noah. Methuselah died in the year of the flood. Mathuselh was 187 when he begat Lamech, Lamech was 182 when he begat Noah, and Noah was 600 when the flood came (Gen 7:11), the 2nd month and 17th day. 187+182+600=969 which was the age of Methuselah when he died. Enoch was translated when he was 365 years old, for he walked with God. Ge 5:24 And Enoch walked with God: and he [was] not; for God took him. Heb 11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. Jude 1:14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, 15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard [speeches] which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.
