GENESIS CHAPTER SIX ------------------- Verse 1, As we saw in chapter 5 that each man listed had many sons and daughters born unto them. Besides Cain had gone out and had begat sons and daughters. Ge 4:17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch. Verse 2, Who are the Sons of God and the daughters of men. Job 1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. 7 And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. Job 38:4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. ... 7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Pink points out that some versions of the Septuagint contain the word "angels" in Gen 6:2,4. The angels are the "sons of God" by creation, just as Adam was the Son of God. How come it doesn't say that the daughters of God married the sons of men? It is usually men that are deceived by the looks of the opposite sex. Two major ideas here: 1) The "sons of God" were fallen angels "who kept not their first estate" (Jude 6:7) "even as Sodom and Gomorrah" (2Pe 2:4-9), and this intrusion into the human sphere produced a race of wicked giants. NOTICE: That in verse 1 it was men than began to multiply of whom daughters were born. It does NOT say when the "sons of God" began to multiply. It doesn't say that when ungodly men began to multiply and daughters were born unto them. Where is there any divine record that forbade men to marry unbelievers. 2) That this is the breakdown of the line of Seth by intermarriage with the godless line of Cain. The "sons of God" refers to the godly and the "daughters of men" refer to the ungodly. One of the arguments against fallen angels is that Jesus said, "For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven." ( However this is speaking of the elect angels. Men don't marry men, but perverted men do.) Verse 3, The flood will come in 120 years, when Methuselah dies. Verse 4, This union of the "sons of God" and the "daughters of men" caused an offspring of literal giants. The word "when" could have been translated "because" or "since". It is like saying, "When you play with fire you get burned." The one is the result of the other. De 3:11 For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants; behold, his bedstead [was] a bedstead of iron; [is] it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? nine cubits [was] the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man. bedstead = couch or bed cubit = a measure of distance (the forearm), roughly 18 in. nine cubits = 13.5 feet in length four cubits = 6 feet wide Shaq O'Neal is 1 foot 1 inch taller than me and I look like a midget compared to him. Shaq could lie on this couch and have 6 feet 5 inches to spare. Notice also the measurement was after a man's cubit (forearm) and not a giants. Compare: Nu 13:33 And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, [which come] of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. ( These are after the flood ) All the giants seemed to be enemies of God and his people. Example Goliath (type of Anti-Christ as David is a type of Christ) who was 9ft 9in tall, and probably smaller than the first giants. The word translated "giants" is n@phiyl {nef-eel'} "the Nephilim." It comes from a word that means: 1) to fall, lie, be cast down, fail 1a) (Qal) 1a1) to fall 1a2) to fall (of violent death) 1a3) to fall prostrate, prostrate oneself before 1a4) to fall upon, attack, desert, fall away to , go away to, fall into the hand of 1a5) to fall short, fail, fall out, turn out, result 1a6) to settle, waste away, be offered, be inferior to 1a7) to lie, lie prostrate Compare: Jude 6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. First estate = beginning, origin "own" = pertaining to one's self, one's own, belonging to one's self Their OWN dwelling place. They dwelt in heaven, but heaven did not belong to them personally. "but left their OWN habitation" habitation = 3613 oiketerion {oy-kay-tay'-ree-on} AV - house (1) - habitation (1) [2] 1) a dwelling place, habitation; of the body as a dwelling place for the spirit The only other place the word is found in the New Testament is in 2Co 5:2 where the word is used to refer to our house meaning our body. 2Co 5:2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: 3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. 4 For we that are in [this] tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life. What is Jude 6 talking about when it says that the angels that sinned left their house. Could it be possible that the verse following verse 6 could give us a clue? Jude 6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. 7 EVEN as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in LIKE MANNER, giving themselves over to fornication, and GOING AFTER STRANGE FLESH, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. 8 Likewise also these [filthy] dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. strange = 2087 heteros {het'-er-os} 1) the other, another, other; of number 1a) of number as opposed to some former person or thing 1b) the other of two 2) to quality; another i.e. one not of the same nature, form, class, kind, different These scriptures seem to show that the sin of Sodomy is similar to the sin of fallen angels. Sodom's sin was pride; and pride goeth before the fall. Eze 16:49 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, PRIDE, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. These angels didn't simply appear as men, but left their own house and entered into a strange house. If this is correct then why would fallen angels do such a thing? Pink thinks, to destroy the channel through which Christ would come. Why do men desire other men, which is against nature? It is hard to understand. 1. Notice that it was men than began to multiply of whom daughters were born. It does NOT say when the "sons of God" began to multiply. Angels are always in the masculine. Gen 16:7 And the ANGEL of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. 8 And HE said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai. Gen 19:1 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing [them] rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground; ... 5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where [are] the MEN which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them. Acts 10:3 He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an ANGEL of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius. 4 And when he looked on HIM, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God. 2. Notice in verse 4 that the giants were the result of the sons of God going into the daughters of men. These men were mighty and of old (ancient). Notice also in verse 4 that they were before the flood and after the flood. ("in those days; and also after that") Then in the next verse he speaks of the wickedness of men being great. 3. Are these men giants in a figurative sense, or are they literally giants? SEE ABOVE 4. All the giants seemed to be enemies of God and his people. Example Goliath (type of Anti-Christ as David is a type of Christ) who was 9ft 9in tall, and probably smaller than the first giants. Men today are genetically engineering larger crops. Now if little old man can do that, then what? 5. Many of the pagan religions of the world believe that the gods came down to them and the modernist thinks them to be ancient astronauts that visited the earth. Both are deceived! Look at what is happening with the "New Age" movement today. De 32:16 They provoked him to jealousy with STRANGE [gods], with abominations provoked they him to anger. 17 They sacrificed unto DEVILS, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new [gods that] came newly up, whom your fathers feared not. ( came = to enter, come in ) 1Co 10:20 But I [say], that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. One of the gods of the heathen was Pluto the god of the underworld and from which we get the word Hades. In reading Rev 9:11 that the bottomless pit has a king over them called Abaddon (Hebrew) and Apollyon (Greek). During the tribulation period: Rev 9:20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not WORSHIP DEVILS, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: 6. Compare also 2Pe 2:4-5 with Gen 6:4-8 In Gen 6 we see the sons of God going into the daughters of men then God destroying the world but Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. In 2Pe 2:4-5 we see the fall of these angels and then the destruction of the world, but Noah was saved. And then mentions Sodom and Gomorrha as did Jude. 7. Who and what was Satan before his fall? He was the anointed Cherub, with a beautiful house. Ez 28:13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone [was] thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. But we seem Satan in the garden in the body of a serpent, and we know that because God cursed the serpent for it. QUESTION: --------- Why do devils desire to possess men and when cast out desire to ENTER INTO swine. Mr 5:12 And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. Lu 8:32 And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them. Why did the Giants have six fingers and six toes, and the number of the "son of perdition" is 666? Verse 5, Speaks of the depravity of the human race. "[that] every imagination of the thoughts of his heart [was] only evil continually." Compare Ps 14:1 - Some argue since most men believe that there is a God, that this verse is not speaking of all men without exception. But the words "There is" are supplied and besides that men do not believe in the true God, but false gods. Ro 3: 9 What then? are we better [than they]? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; 10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. 13 Their throat [is] an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps [is] under their lips: 14 Whose mouth [is] full of cursing and bitterness: 15 Their feet [are] swift to shed blood: 16 Destruction and misery [are] in their ways: 17 And the way of peace have they not known: 18 There is no fear of God before their eyes. Verse 6, It repented God, speaking after the manner of men, because God does not repent nor change, but he does change the course of his providence, such as bringing in the flood. He "suffered grief" as the word can mean and as our verse says ("grieved him at his heart"); but He never changes His mind or alters His purposes. Nu 23:19 God [is] not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do [it]? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? Mal 3:6 For I [am] the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. Ro 11:29 For the gifts and calling of God [are] without repentance. Heb 6:17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the IMMUTABILITY of his counsel, confirmed [it] by an oath: Verse 7, The promise of the flood. Verse 8, Some have said that Noah was searching for grace and found it. But the verse says that it was "in the eyes of the LORD" that this grace was found. found = to attain to that which was lost. Noah was lost, and he attained to grace which he had not had before and this grace was found in the "eyes of the LORD." In other words it was the LORD that LOOKED upon Noah in an act of sovereign favor and bestowed grace upon him. Verse 9, the result of verse 8. Most would have it the other way around. Noah was a just man! How was he just? By the grace of God, through the blood of the coming Messiah. READ Romans 3:9-28 ( Man is depraved and he does not seek God. God gives a man grace which enables a man to seek and believe the true God, and through faith in Christ's sacrifice at calvary, and nothing else, that man is justified.) Verse 10, All of humanity on the earth today come by way of Noah and his three sons. Scientist claim (you got to be careful here) that through genetic research they have traced a certain gene that is passed by the mother to the daughter only, back to one woman, which they claim was in Africa and of course many thousands of years back. We know from the Bible that all of humanity on earth today can be traced back to Noah and his wife. Verse 11-12, We see the corruption of the human race. Instead of evolving upward, man only got more corrupt. Only after some traumatic happening does man turn to God, and then after time forgets God. So today man is getting more corrupt, and the politicians will never turn the situation, especially if they continue to leave God out of the picture. Our early American fathers trusted in God. Verse 13, God speaks to Noah and tells him of the coming destruction upon the earth. That he will destroy all life that has breath (vs. 17), and that he will do it with the earth, although some read this "will destroy them from the earth." but He did destroy them with the earth, in using water in a flood. He tells Noah to build an ark for his family only. Jesus said, "But as the days of Noe [were], so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be." (Mat 24:37-39) 1) Increased population - Gen 6:1 2) God dealing in long-suffering with a wicked world - 1Pe 3:19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; 20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. 3) God sent his messenger to warn of the coming judgement. Noah preached! 2Pe 2:5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth [person], a PREACHER of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; [righteousness = in a narrower sense, justice or the virtue which gives each his due] 4) God's Spirit ceases to strive with man. Ge 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also [is] flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. 2Th 2:7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth [will let], until he be taken out of the way. 8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: 5) Men reject the message and there is no turning, but things only get worse. 2Ti 3:13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. 6) A small remnant who find grace in the eyes of the Lord. "...while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water." (1Pe 3:20) 7) One man was saved through the flood and one man was translated from the flood. The Jews will be preserved through the tribulation period and some people will be translated from the tribulation (all believers). Enoch already walked with God, but Noah found grace. 8) Pink says, "Descent of fallen angels to the earth," and a repeat of Gen 6:4, if we are to believe that Gen 6:4 is speaking about fallen angels. Today the New Age movement communicates with angels, and aliens from other worlds, etc. 9) God's judgement finally poured out on the world of the ungodly, and that suddenly and without remedy. 1Th 5:3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then SUDDEN destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they SHALL NOT ESCAPE. Verse 14-16, God tells Noah how to make the ark. 1) Cypress tree fits closest to the wood described. 2) Probably took a long time to build. God told Noah it would be 120 years until the flood. And 1Pe 3:20 says, "when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing." Men probably laughed at what he was doing, because he was taking so long to build it. 3) rooms = nests in the Hebrew 4) 450 ft long, 75 ft wide, 45 feet high. 3 stories. 1 window in the top "thou shalt finish it ABOVE". 1 door in the side. Verses 17-18, All flesh will die except Noah and his family. The ark was only made for them. The ark is a type of Christ. Verse 18 shows that the covenant was only made with Noah ONLY (a type of Christ) and included his family ONLY. "But WITH THEE will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee." (Gen 6:18) God established His covenant with Christ and the children that were given to him were included in it. READ Heb 2:9-18 Notice verse 13: "And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the CHILDREN which God hath GIVEN me." READ Ps 89:27-34 Notice verse 29: "His seed also will I make [to endure] for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven." Isa 53:10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put [him] to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see [his] seed, he shall prolong [his] days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. 11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, [and] shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Verses 19-22, We see that God preserves the animal kingdom from becoming extinct by bring two of every kind upon the ark, male and female. In the next chapter we see that of the clean animals they were taken in pairs of sevens. Noah did ALL of what God had commanded him to do. Noah, a type of Christ: 1) Noah's name means "rest" Christ is our rest. 2) Noah was the only just man on the earth. Only in Christ can we be just. 3) Noah was "perfect in his generation," which must mean his physical heritage, since we know that he was fallen in Adam. We saw in verse 4 that the Nephilim had corrupted the earth, but Noah's line had not been corrupted. Christ was the "Lion of the tribe of Judah," and was a perfect man. 4) Noah walked with God. So too Christ only pleased His Father and came to do His will. 5) God assigned to Noah ALONE a work to do. Prepare the ark which would save his house. Christ came to do a work ALONE that the Father gave him to do. And that completed work would save his house. 6) The covenant was made with Noah only, but included his seed in the blessings of it. So too, the everlasting covenant was made with Christ only and his seed, the children GIVEN to him, were included in the blessings of it. 7) The work that Noah did was efficacious for the saving of his house. The work that Christ did was efficacious for the saving of His house.
