GENESIS CHAPTER 11 ------------------ Verse 1, One language because there was only one family who repopulated the earth, besides there is no record in scripture that there had ever been more than one language as all men had descended from Adam. Verse 2, Gill thinks that the correct interpretation is eastward, that is toward the east, and the lexicon does give that definition. The marginal notes, put there by the translators reads: {from...: or, eastward} The ark rested on the mountains of Ararat in eastern Arminia. Not just Ham and his descendants, but all of Noah's descendants. Shinar: Shin`ar {shin-awr'} AV - Shinar 7, Babylonish 1; 8 Shinar = "country of two rivers" 1) the ancient name for the territory later known as Babylonia or Chaldea Verses 3-9, From the preceding chapter we see that it must have been Nimrod who organized this rebellion against God. 1) We see an opposition to God's command given to Noah: Ge 9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth. But they said: "... let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth." (Gen 11:4) 2) Had not God intervened they would have accomplished their imagination. Today, the world has become one and man has flown to the moon and back. He has made discoveries with the use of computers in the past few years that has surpassed all of time before. 3) In Nimrod we see Satan's attempt to raise up a universal ruler. Satan has not given up on this and will raise up Antichrist in the end times. 4) The overthrow of Nimrod, by God "coming down" ("Go to, let us go down" 11:7) is before the mentioning of the line of Shem and the bringing of Abram into Canaan. This shows that the overthrow of Antichrist, by Christ coming down, will take place before the Millennial kingdom in which Israel will be re-gathered and established in their land. Verses 10-29, From Shem to Abram. Shem was born in the year 1556, the 500th year of Noah's life. If we add the age of each father when his son was born to him to this year we find that Abram was born in the year 1946 and left Haran in the year 2021. Verse 30, We see that Sarai, Abram's wife was barren, which is to play an important role in the God's plan for Abraham and his wife. Verse 31, Terah took Abram, his son and Lot, his son's son, and Sarai, Abram's wife out of Ur of the Chaldeans to go into the land of Canaan, but they stopped short and dwelt in Haran. Terah = Terach {teh'-rakh} Terah = "delay" n pr m Tarah = "station" n pr loc 1) the father of Abraham 2) a station of Israel in the wilderness Haran = from a word that means "parched" 2) the city to which Abraham migrated when he left Ur of the Chaldees and where he stayed until his father died before leaving for the promised land; located in Mesopotamia in Padan-aram at the foot of Mount Masius between the Khabour and the Euphrates Verse 32, Abram's father, Terah, dies in Haran at the age of 205 in the year of 2081, when Abram was 135 years old and 60 years after Abram was called to go out of the land. There seems to be a conflict here. Abram departed out of Haran after his father died, according to Acts 7:2-3, and was 75 years od when this happened (Gen 12:4), but if Abram was born to Terah when he was 70 years old and Terah died in Haran at age 205, then Abram would have been 135.
