GENESIS CHAPTER 18 ------------------ Verse 1, Plain = 'elown {ay-lone'} 1) tree, great tree, terebinth 2) plain Mamre = "strength" or "fatness" 2) an oak grove on Mamre's land in Palestine where Abraham dwelt LORD appeared unto Abraham Jehovah = "the existing One" Verse 2, Three men, which were angels: see 19:1 Some have said that these may be the three persons of the Trinity, which is very unlikely, since the Holy Spirit and the Father have never appeared in human form. Joh 5:37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. Verse 3, Abraham knows that they are of the Lord Verses 4-8, Abraham asks them to rest, wash and eat, which they did; so they appeared as men. When they went down to Sodom in chapter 19 the men of Sodom wanted to know them. Verses 9-12, The Lord (the Son of God in human form) says that Sarah will have a son. "Time of life" - Time of the birth of Isaac When Sarah heard this she laughed WITHIN herself, because of her age and the age of Abraham. We know that she laughed within herself because she denied laughing in verse 15. Verses 13-14, Nothing is too hard for the Lord to do. Verse 15, Sarah denies laughing within herself, but the Lord knew that she had laughed. Verses 16-22, The Lord reveals to Abraham what He will do to Sodom, because of their wickedness. Verse 19 shows the connection between the promises and righteousness. Not that the promises were a result of the righteousness, but rather righteousness is consequences of the promises. That righteousness would be worked in Abraham. Verse 21 is spoken after the manner of men, for God knows all that went on in Sodom. Perhaps he will observe their wickedness in human form, as a witness against them. In verse 22, two of the angels continue on toward Sodom, but the Lord continued to talk with Abraham. We see in 19:1 that it was TWO angels that came to Sodom at evening. Verses 23-33, Abraham intercedes with the LORD for Sodom. He knew that his brother's son, Lot, was there. 50, 45, 40, 30, 20, 10. In these verses we do see that God spares the wicked, for a time, for the sake of the righteous.
