GENESIS CHAPTER 34 ------------------ Verse 1, Dinah was about 14 to 15 years old now, according to Gill. The record of he birth is in Gen 30:21. Gen 30:21 And afterwards she bare a daughter, and called her name Dinah. {Dinah: that is Judgment} The sons of Leah which were Dinah's sisters were: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun. The sons of Bilhah (Rachel's maid): Dan, Naphtali The sons of Zilpah (Leah's maid): Gad, Asher The sons of Rachel: Joseph, Benjamin Dinah went out to see the daughters of the land: She had no sisters at home and she went out to find someone her own age to be with, just as teenagers still do. When you take your kids on a camping trip with the family, the first thing they want to do is find others their age. But, remember Jacob is not in the right place. He has not thwarted the purpose of God in any way, but he is not where God told him to go. God's commands are what we need to obey, and his sovereignty in matters is His business. Verse 2, Shechem was the prince, whom the city was named after (see Gen 35:4). We also see that Shalem was called a city of Shechem. This Shechem was the son of Hamor the Hivite. He took her: The stem is Qal (BY FORCE), He raped her. 1a) (Qal) 1a1) to take, take in the hand 1a2) to take and carry along 1a3) to take from, take out of, take, carry away, take away 1a4) to take to or for a person, procure, get, take possession of, select, choose, take in marriage, receive, accept 1a5) to take up or upon, put upon 1a6) to fetch 1a7) to take, lead, conduct 1a8) to take, capture, seize 1a9) to take, carry off 1a10) to take (vengeance) defiled = Stem is Piel 2c) (Piel) 2c1) to humble, mishandle, afflict 2c2) to humble, be humiliated 2c3) to afflict 2d4) to humble, weaken oneself Verse 3, The prince did have a love for Dinah, though a worldly sort of love, as is with the attraction of the opposite sex, for he barely new her to be in love with her person. But he fell in love with her and wanted her as his wife. He spoke kindly unto Dinah: That is he spoke to her heart as the marginal notes read. Verse 4, He wants Dinah for his wife and asks he father Hamor to get Dinah for his wife, since his father was the king and he the prince. So, Hamor would go to Jacob to get the consent of Dinah's father for the marriage of her to his son Shechem. Verse 5, Gill thinks that Jacob heard of it by one of the maids that may have accompanied Dinah, but this is only speculation. Perhaps he heard of it from Dinah, herself. He kept from saying anything, laying any blame on anyone, until his sons were come in. Verse 6, Hamor the father of Shechem, goes to visit Jacob, along with his son (see vs. 13). It appears that this is after Jacob finds out about the affair. Verse 7, Evidently Jacob sent messengers to his sons concerning what happened and they immediately came out of the field, being grieved and full of anger over what had happened to their sister. This is the first place we see the phrase "in Israel." Israel is used as the family name and the family became a great nation. They called it folly, which all sin is, and a thing that ought not to be done. Verses 8-12, Hamor, the father of Shechem, pleads with Jacob and his sons for Dinah to be the wife of his son. He will pay them anything only let Jacob's daughter marry his son. Verses 13-17, The sons of Jacob consented, but only with their words of deceit. Jacob was not part of this deceit, for it says that "the SONS of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, because he had defiled Dinah their sister." Later we see that Jacob is angry with his sons because of the end of their plot. They demanded that Shechem be circumcised, and all of their sons (every male), if they were to commune with them and marry their daughters. It was not enough for Shechem to be circumcised, but every male at once, which would make the plot work. Verses 18-19, The words pleased Hamor and especially Shechem. It was no thing to big for him to do, because he loved Dinah, and would not hesitated to perform that which they required. Shechem was honourable: Though he had done a base thing, he wanted to do what was right and he was honourable when it came to keeping covenants. Verse 20-23, Hamor and Shechem, evidently with Dinah (vs. 26), returned unto the city and met with the men of the city. They convinced the men of the city to be circumcised as were the sons of Israel. It would be to their advantage economically that they live as one, and the land was big enough for them all. Verse 24, The men of the city harken unto Hamor and his son, all which are male of the city become circumcised. Verses 25-29, On the third day after the men of the city were circumcised, they were very sore, and as a result very weak because of the pain. They could probably hardly move. It was at this time that Simeon and Levi, Dinah's immediate brothers, that is, the sons of Leah, who was Dinah's mother also, went into the city and slew Hamor, Shechem and all the men of the city with the edge of the sword. Afterward they took everything that they had, including their children and wives, as spoil. Verse 30, Jacob voiced his displeasure with Simeon and Levi, because of what they had done. The dishonour that it must have brought against their religion. Not only, but the danger that such a thing might put them in with the people of the land. Verse 31, Their answer was in the form of a question back to their father, "Should he deal with our sister as with an harlot?
