GENESIS CHAPTER 39 ------------------ Verse 1, What a contrast for Joseph. From being in his father's house and being the beloved son to being a servant in Egypt, which is a type of the world. So too, Jesus, "being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men." (Php 2:6-7). Verses 2-3, We see that Joseph is the prosperous servant. Ps 1:1 Blessed [is] the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2 But his delight [is] in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall PROSPER. Concerning Christ, Isaiah 52:13 says, "Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high." {deal...: or, prosper} and Then in Isaiah 53, that great chapter on the suffering Christ, says in verse 10, "Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put [him] to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see [his] seed, he shall prolong [his] days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall PROSPER in his hand." Verse 4, We see that Joseph's master was well please with him. Verse 5, Here we see that the Egyptian was blessed for Joseph's sake. We too, who are adopted into God's family, are blessed for Christ's sake, for we are nothing but sinners who are worthy of death, yet blessed for Christ's sake, and our faith is in him. Eph 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's SAKE hath forgiven you. Eph 1:3 Blessed [be] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly [places] IN Christ: Verse 6, Joseph was a goodly person and well favoured. Joseph's position or station had changed but his person remained the same. Thou Christ was a servant, his person always remained the same. And when the centurion and those with him beheld Jesus at His crucifixion and the earthquake and the things that were done they feared God and said, "Truly this was the Son of God." (Mat 27:54). Verses 7-12, Joseph was sorely tempted, yet sinned not. We see here that Joseph viewed this act that his master's wife wanted engage in as wickedness and a sin against God. So too, Jesus was tempted of the devil, yet he sinned not. The word tempted, means tried, yet no flaw was found in Him. He never even entertained the desire to sin. Just as Joseph was tempted, not by his brethren in Canaan, but in Egypt by a person of Egypt, which is a type of the world, so too Jesus was tempted by the "prince of this world," the devil. Heb 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as [we are, yet] without sin. We first see the fornication of Judah and then the chastity of Joseph. So too, it was the first Adam who had sinned and cast the world into darkness and it was the second Adam, Jesus Christ, who redeemed a world unto himself. There is one contrast here, Joseph being a mere man fled from youthful lust, yet when Christ rebuked the devil, the devil leaveth him. Paul said to "Flee youthful lusts" (2Ti 2:22). Verses 13-15, She tried to conjure up false witnesses against Joseph, by first lying to the men of the house, before she told her husband. She also showed little respect for her husband in the way she spoke to the men, "See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us." Verses 16-18, We see that Joseph is falsely accused. So too, Christ was falsely accused. Mat 16:59 Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death; 60 But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, [yet] found they none. At the last came two false witnesses, Verse 19, Notice Joseph offers no defense against the false accusation. Not a word in defense. So too, with Christ: "And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what [is it which] these witness against thee? But Jesus held his peace." (Mat 26:62-63) Isa 53:7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. Also notice in this verse it does NOT say that Joseph's master's wrath was kindled against Joseph but simply "that his wrath was kindled." Potiphar probably did not really believe his wife, else he would have probably had Joseph put to death, but was only "saving face." So too, God's wrath was not kindled against Christ but His wrath was put on Christ because of us. God was never wroth against Christ, but was well pleased with him, yet he poured out His wrath upon Him, for our sakes. Verse 20, Joseph is cast into prison and number with the transgressors. Just as Potiphar did not really believe his wife, so too, Pilate could really find no fault in Jesus, but lacked the backbone to stand up to the crowd, because he loved his office more than justice and truth. Just as Joseph was hated by his brethren and treated unfairly by them and turned over to the Gentiles where he was treated unjustly by them the scripture says concerning Christ: Ac 4:26 The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. 27 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, 28 For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. We know from other scriptures that Joseph was treated severely in prison. Ac 7:9 And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him, 10 And delivered him out of all his AFFLICTIONS, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house. Ps 105:17 He sent a man before them, [even] Joseph, [who] was sold for a servant: 18 Whose feet they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron: Verses 21-23, The jailer had respect unto Joseph. The jailer was made to prosper for Joseph's sake. Joseph had charge of the prison. So too, the centurion who had charge of the crucifixion of Jesus said, "Certainly this was a righteous man." (Lu 23:47)
