GENESIS CHAPTER 44 ------------------ Verse 1, Every man's money went back into their sacks, showing again that the grain which was needed for their survival, would not be purchased, but rather given freely by Joseph, who being a type of the Lord Jesus Christ, which shows that salvation can not be purchased by one's own works, but it is of free grace. Verse 2, Joseph has his servant put his silver cup into Benjamin's sack. The end of this story is not yet. they do not know Joseph yet, nor was it the right time to tell yet. Verse 4-6, The servant catches up with them and tells them the words that Joseph had commanded him. It is suggested to them that they have taken his cup, and therefore rewarded evil for the good that he has shown them. While they may not have stolen the cup, his brethren had certainly rewarded him with evil in the past. Verses 7-12, The cup is found in Benjamin's sack. Verse 13, They rent their clothes when the cup was found in Benjamin's sack. They knew their father would die if Benjamin did not come home. This is too much! Verse 14, They all return to Joseph's house and fall down before him. They were not about to go home without Benjamin. Verse 15, Joseph asks about their deed, knowing full well that he had the cup put in Benjamin's sack. He led them to believe that he knew it through divination, which thing the Egyptians probably practiced. Verse 16, Judah answers, How shall they clear themselves? They are all doomed to be his servants. Verse 17, But Joseph tells him that only Benjamin will be his servant and that the rest of them can return in peace to their father. But this will not do. Judah does not know what to do but plead for Joseph's mercy, telling him everything and pouring out his heart to Joseph. Verses 18-32, Judah pours out his heart to Joseph Verses 33-34, Judah wants to be a servant of Joseph in the place of Benjamin. he would rather do that than bring down his father with grief for Benjamin. In this Judah cared for his father and Benjamin more than he did for himself, perhaps feeling the guilt of what they had done to Joseph. This was all that Joseph needed to hear. They were repentant.
