Thank you for visiting Lumpkin Racing !
Racing for my son Steven !

I was born in the San Fernando Valley in Southern Califonia in June of 1963 to Gene & Darlyne. My name Is Stephen My Dad would take me to Saugus Speedway in Saugus Calif. when I was a boy & I told him that I would race one day & be very good at it & I was. My Daddy passed away when I was 14 so he never got to see me take a checkered flag but I did this Racing in his name for him & I know he is proud. I put his name on this race car in memory of him. Now I know, my son is now so proud of me ! I dedicate all
of my trophys to my mom, may God rest her soul, I know she would be proud too !

In the past i raced at Manzanita Speedway in Phx Az & led in the Championship Points race all year in 98 until MS took me out of the show with only four races to go, i ended up sixth <sigh>
I got MS in July of 98 after I had gotten a heat stroke while rebuilding the front end of my race car in July of 98. I am consistant though, i had finished 6th in points 2 yrs in a row.
We finished 13th in points for Superstocks our first year in the division on a less then part time schedule.
For the 2005 season, we finished 6th in points & i believe we could have had a top 3 finish in points if i had not missed the first 3 races of the season. Seems im still a 6th place racer :)

We missed  the first points race of the season. No chance to be in the running for a Championship this year, sighhhhhh.

3/8/08
It was really nice to be back in the pure stock division. After I work on the offsets of my wheels & find what works best for handling, I believe we can do very well.
I started 6th in my heat & ended up 3rd.
In the Main Event I started 6th, ended up cutting down a tire that we could not get unwrapped from the a-arm so I spent about 6 laps in the pits. Thanks to those that helped me get back out there.
I crossed the line 10th at the checker flag but apparently some new rules count the number of laps spent in the pits & those laps are docked from your finish so they put me as finishing in 16th place.
I realized what I was blameing on track conditions was actually my power steering went out. No wonder I couldn't handle the car, rofl.
Now I understand why Anthony Madrid just stayed in the pits after losing one lap. Whats the point of returning to the race.
I'd like to thank The Fowlers for all they did to help (fixing my cut finger especially), Michael Humpreys crewman for helping with the impossible tire & Chris Rasta for towing my car home for me after the brakes went out on my truck.
WE hope to be back out there for the next race & do a little better.

3-15-08
Well, made it back out tonight, finished 5th in my heat & that put me 8th row, inside for the Main Event (15 position) We ended up finishing 9th in the Main. Still figuring out wheel offsets. 15th in points after this race.

3-29-08
Wild night at the races. Started 2nd row, inside for the Heat Race (3rd position). Finished 8th in my Heat after overheating, spinning & being hit head on thus forcing me to race a Semi Main Event to qualify for the Main Event.
I went to the pits & fixed the damage as well as I could so I could be ready for the Semi Main.  I changed the offset on the left rear to  help the car handle in the corners better. We got it done in time & headed out to race starting 5th row, outside (10 position). With the car feeling a bit better, I was able to work up to a 7th place finish to make the Main Event (they took the top 8).
In the Main Event, we started in the 10th row, inside (20 position). I was able to handle the car better with the change in the left rear offset (thanks Mike) We were abl to work ouselves up to a 10th place finish. Moved to 12th in points.
Really looking forward to the race April 5th Race but will be rough once again without a pitfox,
 sighhhhhhh.

4/5/08
Another night at the races, sighhhhh !
I thought we had the oil flow problem solved. Apparently not. I ran the worst heat race in my life. No power whatsoever. Ended up starting 13th in the Main Event.
In the Main, feeling like I should not even be on the track, it was just a race for survival for me. I had forgot that I had this power loss before because of the oil filter collapsing & even had an extra one with me in case & forgot about it as well. To add to the lack of power, I had retarded the timing last week believing it may be the cause of the car running 260 degrees & after finding the real cause, never remembered to advance the timing again which would have also takin away some power.
Anyways, I ended up finishing 10th place & it looks like I may have been able to advance to 10th in points.
We have two weeks off so I am heading out now to unload, wash & repair the car.

Race Results for 4-26-08
Sighhhhhh.
I swear, golf is looking better & better everyday !
After working on the setup with the guy that has 115 wins & 28 yrs of racing. the car was like the announcer said "wicked fast'. It handled so damn good I felt like I was back in the car I had in 1998.
Ok, a recap of the day. Hauling the racecar with the suburban which I rarely do after rolling it with the racecar once. Not a very warm day here in Phoenix but I ran 220 degrees all the way to the track. Not liking this, knowing that when it hits 118 degrees here this yr, the trucks gonna run much hotter. This is a brand new motor by the way from Checker Auto Parts. Probably has less then 1500 miles on it & it is warrentied but they better do the work.
Anyways, it seems I have water seeping out from under both heads on the truck. Not good. Another garbage motor. Even professionals cant get it right.
On to the track & the race. Yes, the car was wicked fast. I felt incredible behind the wheel & knew it was gonna be a great night.
Started 3rd row outside for my heat race (6th position) worked my way up for a 3rd place finish.
Comes the Main Event, yours truely has outside pole position. Oh yes, the time has come to show the fans & drivers what Stephen is made of,,,, so I thought, sigh. First lap of the main event, my rear end tried to come out from underneath the car. This caused me to spin hard & ended up facing about 20 cars coming at me head on. "Shit, I'm gonna die" was my thoughts, rofl.

I want to say, each & every one of the drivers on the track last night with me were on the ball. They all avoided me pretty damn good for the situation that occured in front of them in a split second. Nice job guys.
I was not quite sure what had happened & wanted to continue to race, it onlt felt like maybe I had a tire going down or a fender bent into a tire. Normally, they would have given my position back up front but they made me tag the rear of the field. I was not happy about this but I am glad today they did it because I would have just got in the way when the rear end got even worse.
Ended up finishing 18th in the Main Event.

Race Results For 5/3/08
Loving the setup of the car. Reminds me of old days no doubt.
We get to the track after having to change out the master cylandar because of course my brakes failed while loading the racecar.
Steven draws a pill for me (position in heat race) & draws a 5 & not knowing, puts it back & they made him draw another one. He drew a 4. Cant get much better then that ;)
This put me front row, inside for the 3rd heat race. I felt confident. Before getting in my helmet & heading out, I noticed Steven doing something by the drivers door of the racecar. I walk over to see that my boy had made a note out of mud on the door for me that said "I love you" WOW ! He really is something & I am sooooo blessed that God chose me to be his daddy.
Ok, now, I strap in & head out knowing damn well I could win this one from the pole. The green flag drops, I ended up finishing the heat race in 4th after a bit of trouble thats been resolved :)
I started 15th in the Main Event. With a broken motor mount & transmission mount, I had worked my way up to 7th place at one point when someone else spun me out & I didnt even bring out a yellow but they sent me to the back of the pack anyways. He did come up & appologize afterwards. With the driveshaft bouncing against the bottom of the car, I worked myself back to an 8th place finish.
After repairing a broken motor mount & a broken transmission mount all day today, I have another days worth of body work to do & then we will be ready. I have the next two weekends off & then a double header will be the next race on May 24th & 25th.
Till next time. Go fast, turn left & have a great time :)

Race Results For 6/14/08
WOW, WOW, WOW!
The car was wicked fast. Nothing I could not do with it, no place I could not put it, UNTIL some yahoo decided he had a vendetta against my equipment. I am so tired of these non driving wannbe race car drivers its driving me nuts.
We started 2nd row, outside in the heat race (4th position) & ended up finishing 3rd.
In the main event I started 4th row, inside (7th position) I didn't get one full lap in when some non driving SOB decided to turn left into my car for no apparent reason, this took out my right front tire & obviously caused more damage then this that we didn't know until later in the race.
I pitted to get the tire changed & lost two laps. Coming back out on the track tagging the pack, I ended up lapped by the leader who could not get away from me for nothing in the world. Being lapped traffic, I decided to let some cars that were in contention for the win to get by me to challenge him.
I was told I had worked myself up to about 7th position when more if the damage the yahoo caused on the first lap, reared its ugly head. My right rear rim actually broke & came apart from the brake drum & axle & went flying down the front straight without my car, sigh. Even tho, we obviously had a top 5 car, I ended up in 17th position. I remember now why I wanted to race Superstocks. They can pass clean without causing hundreds of dollars worth of damage.
Anyways, I had a blast. I love racing & I proved tonight to quite a few that I am good. There is lots more to be proven & I am up for the job.

I will repair all the damage this non driving yahoo caused & be back out there again in two weeks. Maybe, just maybe someone will try to pass me without hitting me & taking me out of the show.
Heres a couple pics of us tonight at the track

6/28/08 Race Results...
Faster & faster each week !

We have got so fast. In my heat race, I took 4th as I was running out of gas. This was good enough to get me into the Main Event.
I started 6th row inside of the Main Event  (11th position). The car felt great but ran hot. I was working on taking over 6th place when the lights on the track went dark. They threw the red flag & we got out of our cars on the front straight & were able to mingle with the crowd as they tried to get the lights back up & running.
After about 45 mins, they told us we had to get back into our cars & that they would call the race after the first yellow flag but I believe they decided to just give us 5 more laps of racing.
I continued to try to get by the 6th place car & just being so cautious, not wanting to get into him, I had to keep backing off just to be safe.
With about 3 laps to go, I dove under him once again to get by him & guess what ? Yeah, some moron hit me & spun me & back to the back of the pack I went, never bringing out the yellow I just continued to race hard.
I was very pissed to say the least. So damn tired of these non driveing fools that I just pressed the pedal to the metal without lifting all the way around the track. I don't know how many cars I passed within the last 3 laps but I crossed the line in 8th. I use to be able to come from the back of the pack at Manzanita to finish top 5's almost weekly & I believe we are there again.
We were damn fast & finally running well enough to be able to start running top 5's anytime now.
We have a month off & I can't wait to get back out there again.
It's looking like I was tied for 10th in points going into this race & I do believe if & when they ever get to tallying it up, I will be in 8th in points now. Looking for at least a 6th place trophy this year considering I had to miss the first race of the season. I think we can do it.

Gotta Race !

Humble Race Report for 7/26/08 <sigh>

Ok, we started front row inside for the heat race. The car felt good & we did well. I got passed by someone who must have out motored me pretty bigtime.
He pulled away with no chance of me catching him & I really tried. I was able to finish 2nd though.

For some reason in the Main Event, I drove very agressive tonight. Drove way over my head with no paitience whatsoever. I am told by many out at the track that alot of other drivers did as well but I can only account for me & my actions & I am going to be my worse critic.

I started 4th row, outside for the Main (8th position) & it seemed like problems started right away.
It is possible as a few have told me, that I was getting banged around pretty good & that may be why I started to drive so irratically myself. Anger has a way of doing this type of thing. Whatever it was, I knew I was driving like an ass & could not get myself to calm down & be patient like I usually am.

For anyone I may have helped caused damage to, I am sorry. I hope this will make you feel a bit better....
I tore up 4 tires, at least one rim & I am not sure how many A-Arms, tie rods & anything else that may be broken, oh, the right side fender.

I am beat to hell & pretty sore, dissapointed in myself (feels like the worse race I ever had finishing 19th & losing positions in points) & have alot of work ahead of me.
I will add  pics of the torn up car later I am sure.
Here are some pics as promised, sigh...

After tearing the racecar apart & further investigation, maybe I was not so much driving over my head as I suspected. It's quite possible I didn't realize just how much damage my racecar had & was fighting with everything I had to make it work.
Yes, with this broken shock AND leafspring in the left rear, I imagine I was out of control bigtime considering the left rear is where we try to get our best bite on the track.
It is now the day after the race & I have repaired the bumper & fender so far & may be able to salvage a couple tires by using tubes.
Losing one of my friends & sponsor (Debbie) is going to make things very tough on me but I have emailed Michael at RaceJesus Motorsports to see if he can help any & we hope to be all repaired & back out there for the next race on Sat. 8/23/08
Amazingly, we have only lost one position in points after this horrible race. We are now in 9th place.

Race Results for 8/23/08
Well, it was another night at the races.
We drew a bad pill that made us start 7th in the heat. They were taking the top 5 to the main event. We finished 5th.
This put me 7th row, outside (14th position) for the main event.
Within about 5 laps I was able to work up to 8th position & was battleing for 7th when I noticed my temp gauge reading about 240. There was nothing coming from my overflow hose that would normally show me steam coming out when I am running too hot so I stayed out for a couple more laps.
Apparently, the radiator let go & the water caused me to spin in turn 2 & immidiately my temperature rose rto 260 degrees (boiling) My night was over.
I backed the car out of the way of the oncoming cars, turned it off & let the window net down so the officials would know I was done & send a tow truck.
Someway, somehow, I maintined 9th in points. With 4 or 5 races left, we hope to get a top 10 in points this season.
Our next race will be on Sat. 9/6/08. With the sponsorship I have lost, its looking like I may be forced to retire after this year because I just can't do it financially at all when I can't even pay my bills at home.

Race Results for 9/6/08

Wow ! What I can do with a car that is setup & when it does not break.
I started front row, inside for my heat race.
Steven drew me a great Pill (position is determined by numbers drawn out of a thing like "bingo")
Not knowing what the car would do after the last race & having fear it would just break again, I took it kind of easy to see how it was going to respond. We finished 3rd which gave us an automatic spot in the Main Event.
The track did something a bit differant tonight & had us (the top 4 in each heat race) draw a pill once again for the Main Event. We drew a 6. This put us 2nd row, outside for the main event.
The car was hooked up & ran about 190 degrees the whole race (perfect).
I was able to move into 3rd place & hold onto that position even after several yellows.
I noticed the two lead cars ahead of me were slower going into the turns then I was but faster then me coming out.
It was an exciting evening having a car that handled well enough that I could actually race it.
A top 3 for me at this point after all the problems I have had is as good as winning one :)
It's looking like we moved back into 8th in points. I will update about this later.
Oh Yeahhhhhhh :)

Race Results 9/20/08
After the great 3rd place finish the last race out, we were feeling very confident that we were going to do well.
I was a bit worried about the fan I was using & it was a very legitimate worry.
I could not hook up very well in my heat & finished 5th.
In the Main Event, we started 12th & worked all the way up to 5th when the fan apparently hit something & damaged the radiator.
With a few laps left, I watched the gauge climb & climb. With about 2 laps left, I was pushing the limit but decided because Prolong has saved my motors every time they overheated, that I would finish this out. Well, the water coming from the radiator made me spin again & my night was done. We ended up finishing 13th.
I obviously lost my 8th place position in points but do not think I can be worse then 9th right now with one race to go.
I am heading back outside to tear the radiator & fan off now & the passneger door that looks like a bomb blew it up because I got real loose in one turn & slammed up against a friend very hard & trust me, this was not intentional. I am very sorry this occured.
Well, back to the drawing board. Have a great week everyone.

Race Report For 10/18/08~Last race of the season.
It has takin me some time to be able to sit down & post anything about this horrifying "last race of the season" race. I am still trying to figure out what the hell went on.

We have been running so well & proved once again we were going to run well this night also as I started front row, outside & raced all 8 laps in 2nd place while being beat to hell by someone that calls themselves a champion the whole time. I was warned about this person before the start of the race even, by someone I care about & respect a whole lot.
I have absolutly no idea what the drivers behind me were thinking. This was a heatrace & the top four were going to the main event no matter what & no one knew of we were going to be inverted or not.
If I was running 2nd, 3rd & 4th place had it made & had no reason to be beating on my car to get by because they can't drive well enough to get around without destroying a car.
Yes, the stupid actions of others for one spot, & maybe a couple points have caused my racecar to be totalled. I really am not sure what the hell happened except for what I am told by those watching it from the stands. What I do know is when this so called champion was finally able to get me to get out of shape after trying for 8 laps, I ended up hitting a tractor tire that is used as a barrier to keep cars from going into the infield. What a joke that barrier turned out to be. I hope people learned that those tires stop NOTHING. They destroy racecars but keep nothing safe in the infield.
I hit it going who knows how fast, destroyed my racecar & obviously flew through the air across the checkered flag to retain my 2nd place finish & still ended up in the infield.
It has been a hell of a season. After continuing to fight the setup all year, looks like the last 4 or 5 times I put this car on the track, I was running top fives & top threes. We finally got back to where we use to run weekly in the old days thanks to Jerry Bullis & others including Michael Humphries & his crew.
I am told by people in the stands, Michael got into the car that was getting into me so it makes sence having twice the weight hitting me, how I was finally forced to get out of shape.
I highly doubt Michael did anything to harm me purposly in any way. I just don't have a clue what the hell happened back there.
One thing I do know, two of us paid dearly for what looks to be some slight err in judement.
I have a totalled racecar & my friend who raced his ass off all year to win a championship, lost it by two points. I ended up in 9th place in points.
I had left the track, not wanting to even be there anymore out of my dissapointment so I have no clue why the finish of the 2nd heat race looks like it does. I have no idea why my friend & potential 2008 champion had to run a semi when he should have finished in the top 4 with no problem. Were there penalties for rough driving ? I have no idea & asked no one to enforce any penalties. I only asked one official to let me have my 2nd place finish that was stolen from me at the checker flag.
For Michael, I am sorry for him, his family, friends, crew & sponsors that his championship was takin from him in a split second. Lessons on a track are hard lessons learned. When we drive over our heads, someone always pays.
I do not know if I will recover from all this & be back for the 2009 season. Without sponsorship help, its very doubtful. I need a subframe.
I would like to thank....
all the fans at Canyon Speedway Park. Doug Gabbard for all the incredible work he has done to make CSP the fine track that it is for racers & fans alike.
All of the crew at CSP who without them, racing would be impossible.
My sponsors who stand behind me & believe in me even when things look bleak.
Those that helped me get the car to run up front like Jerry & Michael.
My son Steven for always believing in me & being my biggest fan who says he does not want to see me quit racing. He sure has stood by me in so many ways.
Not forgotton, Jesus Christ for giving me the ability to be well enough to continue to live out my childhood dream of racing.
Thanks everyone & God bless.

Awards Banquet 2008

Ughhhhhhhh ! I am soooooooo angry at the racetrack. I may never race this track again after what they did to us today.
Today was the day we celebrated our year of racing in 2008. ALOT of blood, sweat & tears went into this season.
I get to the track thinking I will get a points trophy & a little money for all my efforts during the racing season (at least this is how it has been since I started racing in 1996).
We pull up to the gate to be charged $15.00 to get in so we can have a .99 cent burger & .69 cent soda. Ok, so we are paying for our own awards banquet. I have had Prime Rib meals at other banquets for this price.
We hang out, Steven plays on the jumpy things, I hang with racing buddies & just shoot the shit, have lunch & just enjoy a nice day here in Az.
The time comes to get what we race so hard for all year long. Why do we race so hard besides our love for the sport ? For the fans which my division has always been known to bring in the biggest crowds at any track in the state.
Us racers make money for the track owners. We filled the stands this year like they were filled years ago. Our thanks ? NOT A DAMN THING WORTH SPENDING $30.00 TO GET THERE IN GAS & LUNCH.
No one got a trophy. ONLY the top 5 got little wooden plaques (I have trophys almost 4 ft tall for 13th place in points from other track owners & even bigger ones then this for better points positions paid out cash & trophys up to 15th place).
I find out that ONLY the top 5 in points in each division will recieve these little, wooden plaques & the rest will recieve only money.
This bums me out bad. I like the trophys because it gives me something to show for all my hard work for the year. I have lots of them but EARNED another one this year no doubt. I expected a 9th place points trophy & some cash. What I got was a whole $100.00 for killing myself to be at the track for every race so the fans would be able to come out & watch racing & I get a whole $100.00. Don't forget it cost me $30.00 just to go get the $100.00. If I knew this was going to happen, I would have had the track owner mail me my money & saved $30.00.
I feel cheated. I feel used. I feel humiliated. No track owner has ever made me feel this way in all my years of racing since 1996. I once got a 5 ft trophy & over $700 for 6th place in points. What the hell happened to tracks ? Don't give me this economy bullshit either. You didn't suffer from the economy when you took my money at the back gate each race. I made more money from just finishing one race in 3rd place then I made for a whole damn season.
IF I choose to race again in 2009, it probably won't be at Canyon Speedway Park. I will go back to my old hometrack at Manzanita Speedway where my racing career started out & maybe feel appreciated there.
I have a car to rebuild before I even think about racing so I guess we will just play it by ear.
I want to thank the track announcer, Mr. Honeycutt, your a class act & I appreciate you very much. Thanks for all you do.
Thanks to all my sponsors. Without them, racing would be impossible.
Thanks to all of you who gave me help & advise. I appreciate you very much.
A special thanks to my little boy, Steven who was my only pitcrew all year & did a hell of a job. Without him, I would not even race.
Thanks to everyone who VOLUNTEERED thier time to make the track work so we could race. You are greatly appreciated.
THANK YOU TO ALL THE FANS ! WITHOUT YOU THERE IS NO REASON TO RACE !
A special thank you to all the folks in the stands who showed thier appreciation for me today as I went to recieve my $100.00. YOU made it special for me. I could not believe the reception I got from you. Thank you very much.

Good luck to all of you in 2009.
