About my Racing in 2003, 2004, 2005 & 2006, 2007 Season-
Our Racing Statistics For 2003:
We raced on 4/11/03 for the first time in 5 yrs. The car was FAST & overall i did well
even though guys kept spinning in front of me & i kept hitting them ROFL ! I finished
5th in my heat, because of the car count i needed a 4th place finish to make the main. I
had to run the semi main & came from 21st position to eighth before a car spun in
front of me & i ended up finishing 11th in the semi. My son is very proud of me :
)
I have raced 2 times so far this yr & have 1 top ten finish, i finished 9th my last
time out.
June 14, 2003 Canyon Raceway
I took third in my heat & started 12th in the main event. Due to
car setup problems i was only able to finish 13th (lost only one position) but when we get
this car set up correctly, you will see the #97L running up front with the big boys !
8/30/03 Canyon Raceway
We did it finally, the setup felt nice & i pulled off my first top 5 finish since
1998! (finished 5th) We will see many more top 5 finishes im sure, time to bring home more
trophys : )
9/18/03
WOW ! What a race this was ! We ran 30 laps, i didnt even
realize we really did it all went so well ! I started 3rd row inside (5th position) &
ran very well the whole race, we ran in 4th for a bit, fell back to 9th for a while &
worked back up to take a 6th place finish. This was the best i had felt back in the car,
lots of confidence but no cockyness, the guys & gals on this track are good & its
an honor to race with them. I do feel that i will be seeing alot more top 5 finishes to
come. The regular season may be over for me but im going to try to make a couple fall
races to work on the setup of the car some more for next season.
11/8/03
What a race the first fall race was, the guys were
absoultly nuts but i was up to 2nd place when i thought the cam or distributor let go, i
just rolled to a stop with about 3 or 4 laps left.
1/4/04
Ok, so the last race was not better (some guy busted up my rear end <sigh>) but now
we are building a new car for the 2004 season & we will be going Superstock #97. I
will update about this as soon as i develop film etc. Have a happy new year !
1/25/04
I sit here in awe at the race last night at Bank One Ballpark. What a privilage
& honor it was to race my stock car in front of 40,000 people ! We had such a
blast ! The driver introduction was so cool, all the lights in the stadium were
out except for the spotlight on the race car, it was very exciting. We had a
problem at the beggining that we took care of (bad master cylinder) then in the
practice session, we broke the upper a-arm <sigh> We got that switched out & got
out to the heat race to fisnish 2nd in that which put me 2nd row outside for the
main event (4th place). The main event was incredible, we had no problems at all
& after i was spun out, i only lost one position so we finished 5th (another top
5 finish added to the books at Lumpkin Racing)
3/27/04
We raced our first Superstock race tonight & it was a very exciting time for us.
Unfortunatly, the race car was not so excited ! I think the car setup is very
nice, it handled well, for this i am grateful.
The motor ? hmmmm, thats a differant story ! It ran hot, it ran weak, very weak.
I could not keep up with the guys at all. It felt like the timing may have been
off but i will check to be sure its nothing more. We will get back out there
soon & we will be comeptitive. I look forward to it :)
4/24/04
Well we raced a good race today, the car ran great & we felt good & ran well. I
have some setup work to do but overall the car was awesome ! I took 5th or 6th
in my heat, after getting a flat on the right rear in the main event & having to
pit, we got back out on the dry slick track only to end up spinning but still
came home with our very first top 10 finish & the superstock division & i have
found my home ! We will do some upgrades to the car setup & get back out there
real soon to be even more competitive then we were tonight.
5/22/04
We rocked again in this race but after another flat, we didnt do as well as we
could. We finished 4th in the heat race holding off one of the best & after
sitting in the pits for quite a while waiting on help to get the left rear
changed, we came back out to finish 9th in the main event. Id like to thank
Jeff, the track owner for getting the tire changed for us, what a cool thing to
do ! If we can keep the tires up, we can do very well in this division :)
7/3/04
I skipped the Birthday race in june because i just didnt want to fight the crowded pits, we went back out on July 3rd with a pretty new setup (added rear weight jacks on my time off) & the car felt pretty good until the main (i got 5th in th heat) In the main, the car wanted to spin around in little circles & it was pretty insane. We finished 8th in the main & brought the car home only to find the next day that the tierod has becomed stripped & the right front tire that was suppose to be towed out was pointing in toward the left front tire, i assume this was why the rear end loved to swing around in every turn i went into. Its fixed now & ready to race again but next time we will fly our new sponsors banner on the hood (racejesus motorsports) & hope to see them out here for the next race, thank you Michael & may the Lord bless you !
7/24/04
It was a very exciting night to have the Founder of RaceJesus Motorsports & his family with us at the track for this race, i only wish i could have put on a better show for them. The car setup was very rough & without putting it on scales, its never going to hook up. I will get this done before the next race. We finished 5th in the heat & 16th in the main. Im only getting out there once a month but we have advanced alot in points the last 3 races, i have come from 20th in points to 15th. I hope we can finish in the top 15 in points because the track will acknowledge me :) I thank everyone for sticking with me thru my rookie year, my sister who i owe so much to for taking care of Steven in the stands while im racing & everyone else that helps me all the time. We will see you next time :)
8/7/04
Well, this i must say was the best race of the season ! I took the car to Flexi Flyer to have them scale & set it up for me & Pete did an awesome job. Thanks Pete ! I added 120 lbs of weight in the rear & the car actually had traction coming out of the corners. The car handled very well & the fact that i did not have to fight the steering in the corners means i will have to learn how to drive it all over again !. We took 6th in the heat (the track gave me no time to adjust my weight jacks after hot lapping, i was in the first heat) but this put me 6th row inside for the main event (12 position) We had moved up to 7th position pretty quick & i was working on the 6th place car when i felt some guy hitting my left rear quarter panel going into every corner, obviously trying to spin me> He finally got the job done with just a few laps to go as he spun me going into turn 1. I went to the back of the pack but was able to finish 10th for the night which for my rookie yr, i have only finished outside the top 10 once. The excitement of the points race is awesome, i never considered getting "points fever" until i realized that the past 3 or 4 races i had moved from 20th to 17th, then from 17th to 15th & after last nights race we moved from 15th to 13th in points ! This feels real good & it would be nice to finish top 10 in points for my rookie season. The track only acknowledges the top 15 so to be acknowledged this yr will be awesome ! Our next race will be a double header called "Superstock Sizzler" on Sept 4th & 5th at Canyon Raceway. I hope to be a contender & finish well.
9/19/04
Ok, here we are almost at the end of the season & i swear im trying to get back out there & race !
I didn't get to make the show on Sept 4th & 5th because a head gasket on my truck blew <sigh> this made me fall from 13th in points to 15th. Now for Sept 18th, 2004 results, Lumpkin Racing-0, Tropical Storm Javier-1 ! I was at the track & ready to go but the storm had other plans & the track cancelled the race. My plan is to be out there in 2 weeks & to try to get 3 more races in before the end of the season. I absolutly must get back on the track, im going thru withdrawls !
10/02/04
We took 5th in our heat & 10th in the main. I feel i could have done better if the steering box didnt
give out but we still prove to be a consistant top 10 racer. We will race again on 10/9/04 & try to
stay within the top 15 in points so the track can recognize us in our rookie yr of Superstocks.
10/9/04
Well, we got back out there & of course now that i took care of the steering box problem, the
left, front spring would collapse leaving me some very poor steering again <sigh> We pulled off a
9th place finish tonight (still finished top 10 in every race but one) & i am now 14th in points, just
13 points out of 13th place. I hope to make it back out Oct 23rd & Oct 30th to hold on to our points position or maybe even advance if the car will steer !
11/14/04
We finished the season off with a bang ! Before we could get a couple laps in the main, a car spun in front of me while i was running 8th & i nailed him, putting me out of the show in 12th place <sigh> There was lots of damage but hey, i drove the car up on the trailer under its own power & we did finish 13th in points for the season. A top 15 in my first yr of superstocks for a part time race scheduale was not bad ! My motor sponsor now has my motor & is doing some upgrades so we will be more competitive next season, for this im very grateful. I will go to the banquet on Dec. 18th & get another trophy for my collection :) See you soon !
12/27/04
Well, after a very busy Christmas season, we finally have time to update the page here. We have new pics from the banquet which was very nice & we had a good time. Im looking forward to next yr with the new motor & the experiance i got in the 2004 season, we should easily get a top 10 in points for 2005 if i can just get out there : )
4/9/05
We got out for our first race tonight for the 2005 season with the upgraded motor & it was very nice. Thanks to Bob for doing an awesome job ! The motor was fast ! We were a little intimidated
for the heat after being away for so long & not knowing how the car would handle etc. that i just played it cool & didn't push it, knowing i was going to the main, no matter what, we finished 6th in the heat. This put me 12th in the main event. I had worked my way up to 5th when i decided to spin (well, the car decided lol) & 2 cars got past me but i didnt bring out a yellow & proceeded to race & finish with a 7th place finish which as of the first race of the season, we are 17th in points & looking forward to the next race !
5/13/05
Well, we went back out & raced our hearts out friday night & did very well considering i had weight jack problems, they had worked themselves loose & the setup of the car was horrible but we finished 8th & i learned alot about the setup again. Will be trying to get back out there to race next Sunday. The car felt good motor wise, i am grateful. It is our desire to get a Top Ten in Points this year, the Lord willing. After this race, we moved into 13th in points.
5/22/05
What a day of racing this was ! It was 113 degrees outside here in Arizona & 180 degrees inside the racecar & firesuit ! We got our best finish ever in a superstock heat race & finished 2nd. This put me 3rd row, outside for the main. In the main the car was feeling very nice, the new spring helped alot. I was running about 6th when suddenly the car broke loose & we pancaked the wall real hard on the passenger side. This caused damage to the steering & rear end & because the rear end mount was broke, i was black flagged so we finished 10th. After such a bad night, im proud to say that we moved into 9th in points, one point away from 8th place. I feel good about this year & after we get all the damage repaired, i know we will do well.
6/11/05
Ummm, not sure i want to go into details about this race at all because the car was messed up worse then ever. The frame is bent but at the shop getting repaired. Even after the lousy finish & damage, we have moved from 9th in points to 7th in points. If i could just hold on to this position i would be very satisfied with out first serious year of Superstock racing. If we dont finish the next race, Golf is looking like a nice, inexpensive, peaceful sport ROFL. I hope to have the car back & ready for the next race on June 18th. next time.......
June 18, 2005
Hey, we finished a race again finally ! I had felt as if i won it because we didnt crash the car up lol. We took 9th in the main event & held on to our 7th place points position. I think the car needs to be scaled since the frame was so bent but i have set it back up the best i can without scaling it.
We hope to continue to be more competitive as the season goes on. The guys i run against are the best & im honored to be racing with them. We should be racing again on July 2nd, 2005. See you there !
July 2, 2005
Well, im gonna say we had our best night ever in the SuperStocks. I had my boy in the pits with me which made it all the more exciting ! He absolutly loved being "behind the scene".
We drew a #16 pill (postion drawing for heat race) which put me 2nd row outside, for the first heat race. We held off the cars behind us to stay there finishing 4th.
Now, we apparently had an inverted field because yours truely was on the pole for the main event. We felt good, a bit scared because the pole is a bit foriegn to me but we felt good. The green flag fell & when i reached turn one, the outside car had got the jump on me so we were in 2nd place. Before i could reach turn 2, the 3rd place car was apparently pushed into me by the 4th place car & this caused a yellow with a restart. When i was hit, it did cause some steering damage & the car was very hard to control on the restart. I had got passed by a couple cars but continued to run strong. Having to fight the steering with half of the hood up in my face for 20 laps & maintain a good finish was no easy task but RaceJesus Motorsports got thier first top 5 finish tonight (5th place) & according to the points i just tallied up, we have remained in 7th place.
The damage we recieved is partially due to the frame already being weak & getting hit there just crumbled the horns for the top A-Arm.
Ok, we dont race again till June 23rd. Next weekend our new sponsor and wonderful friends at OLT Fabrication are having me bring the car into thier shop to repair this damage & make it better & stronger then it came from the factory. Many, many blessings continue. Hope to have this race on video. Thanks to the Lord & all those wonderful people that have helped us !
7/23/05
Another interesting & dissapointing night at the races. Sometimes you cannot see the damage that has occured & you think you have everything fixed until something breaks in the next race ! The upper ball joint on the drivers side snapped during my heat race & we didnt have a spare so i was not able to make the Main Event at all. For just showing up & finishing in 5th position in the Heat Race, we are now just one point out of 6th place in the points standings with 6 races left. We will hold onto this position (7th in points) im sure but i do believe we can advance some more also. Our next race is August 6th. More posted after this race.
8/6/05
We had a very good night at the races. We took 2nd in the heat race & 6th in the main event after a long night with 3 restarts, many yellows & a red flag.
I have moved into 6th place in points, 66 points out of 5th place with 5 races to go. Next week
is another chance to do even better.
8/13/05
It was another good night at the track. We got inside, front row for the heat race and right away i knew i was in trouble. The track was still very wet & my car does not like the inside ! I started to spin the tires right away & lost traction & got passed by 3 cars, right away. I was able to hold onto 4th place in the heat.
The Main Event was pretty awesome. It seemed that most cars were having a hard time getting around the track, they kept spinning out. I hit one car that spun, ended up at the back of the pack & worked my way forward a bit when suddenly, i spun all by myself & just kept going, not bringing out a yellow. Even though i was at the back of the pack once again, i was able to work myself up into 5th position & hold on for a 5th place finish. We remain 6th place in points, 66 points out of 5th. I believe i can lock in a 6th place finish but it does not look like i can gain enough points to finish 5th in points before the end of the season which there is only 4 races left. I know that if i would not have missed the first 3 races of the season, i could be in the top 3 & in the championship contention. Maybe next year <sigh> Our next race is a double header on Sept. 4th & 5th. This should be interesting since its been so long since i have done one of those !
Speaking of next year.... Some sponsorship has me looking into getting in a new car for next season. So far we are looking at 2 Camaros that would be the new car & im sure i can drive a Camaro better then a metric car. We shall see......Sept 3rd & 4th results....
Sept. 3rd, 2005
Heat 1- Stephen Lumpkin, 6th place, Main Event- 7th place.
Sept 4th, 2005
Dash- Stephen Lumpkin 10th place, Main Event- Stephen Lumpkin 6th place.
9/17/05
I started 6th position in the heat race, finished 6th. The Main was an inverted field.I Started outside pole for the Main Event & the car wassetup so sweet & i drove it a bit differant then i ever had with some tipsfrom this years Champion, Lonnie Foss. Its really funny what i changedbut its embrassing as well. I was so use to driving a Camaro that i wasdriving this metric car like one & that does not work ! I ran 2nd for awhile, kept up with the leader pretty nice & then fell back to third for theremainder of the race (about 15 laps) until my right rear let go <sigh>
The problem was, our beadlock seems to have a problem & was leakingin the heat race so we went to a backup wheel & i was concerned that itwould not hold so i even bumped up the air pressure to try to help it out. With 2 or 3 laps left, it came off the bead as i had feared <sigh>. I missedmy first top 3 finish this night but still felt so good after the race. Imlooking forward to the next one with my newfound knowledge.
10/15/05
For the last race of the season, we finished 5th in the heat race & we got
another top 5 in the main event (i finished in 5th place).
We have finished 6th place in points for our first serious season of points
in the Superstock Division.
The motor is now pulled and out getting upgraded so we can be even more
competitive in 2006 with the new Superstock that is being built :)
I am looking forward to the Banquet & the new Trophy i will be able to add
to my collection. Will update one last time for 2005, after the Banquet !
12/20/05
We had our Points Banquet & Points Trophy Presentation on 12/18/05 & it was very nice. We would like to thank Jeff & the staff at Canyon Raceway for a great year of racing & we look forward to racing in 2006!

3/25/06
Well, it was just like i figured it would be, getting back in a Camaro was
AWESOME !
The car (even though it was on it's roof on the 101 a week prior) handled so
well. We got 3rd
in our heat & felt very confident. I was running 5th in the main when we started
having some
overheating problems. With about 10 laps left, i decided i better pull in the
pits & we ended up
10th in the first main event of 2006.
We did have a pretty bad problem with the new motor. Head gasket blew & we
cracked the head which we will have replaced come the next race on April 9th.
Here is a pic of our first day out in 2006 with the new superstock...
5/18/06
Well, i figure i better make some kind of update here for family, friends &
sponsors that may be wondering what is going on.
I sit here so very dissapointed as the new car collects dust without a
motor.
I am very sorry to my family & friends that have been excited about a new
season at Lumpkin Racing but i am especially sorry to my sponsors who have
dedicated so much time & money into the team this year. Even going as far as
rebuilding the trailer after the roll on the 101 so we could make it out on time
for the first race. Thanks to the OLT owner, supervisor & crew for the awesome
job you did on company time. I hope everyone will understand that my hands are
tied.
I will be sure to let you all know when we are ready to run again (thats if
anyone still cares) & when i get back out there, i will race harder then i have
ever raced in my life to try to make up for the loss of 2006. Till then....
7/31/06
We finally have a motor back in the racecar. Our plan is to get out to
Canyon Raceway on August 18th and 19th for the Super Stock Sizzler, Pure Stock
Thunder show. We are also looking forward to a race at Manzanita Speedway
October 6th and 7th to honor our servicemen & women & crown someone Arizona
State Champion. Should be a blast. Hope to see you there.
8/18/06
After being away from racing for so long, I guess I was a bit forgetful about
the setup & did not set the car up well at all & really struggled with the
performance. We took 6th in the heat race & 7th in the Main Event & due to some
damage & the fact it took me too long to repair it, we did not make it out for
the saturday night show.
I hope to do better with the car now that it is set up as it is suppose to be
(have to remember to take it off jackstands. Silly me!) & will be back out to
race on Sept 9th. I sure hope things go well because this may be the only race I
can tell what the car will do for the big race at Manzanita Speedway in Oct, on
the half mile. Hope to see you there !
9/23/06
Last race of the 2006 season out at Canyon Raceway. It felt really good to be
back out there knowing that the setup was right this time.
The car felt pretty good except for what seemed to be some weak springs, and
or shocks. OLT Fabrication is stepping up to take care of this for us. Thanks
Gregg :)
We got 4th in our heat & 6th in the Main. I felt that there was a bit of lack
of power & i do believe this is timing related & will check this out tomorrow.
Steven was the star for this night & even got a trophy ! Steven has this
Late Model friend thats been so kind to him. Mark Fowler #95 had Steven draw his
pill for him & Steven drew a #3 for him. This put Mark on the pole for the main
event & he led it all the way to the checker. After the race, Mark was thanking
all his sponsors etc & gave Steven a special thanks for the awesome pill draw
that helped him win this race & then he gave Steven his trophy. This of course
was like a dream come true for Steven & Mark has a fan for life & Daddy really
appreciates this awesome guy as well & will always want to see him win. Thank
you Mark & all of your crew too for all the kindness you show my little boy.
Well, we will get the car setup & running just a bit better in the next few
days so that we may be able to pick up a few more positions & run with the big
dogs. We are considering running the winter series or fall series if anyone has
one. Hope to see you there ! (Waves to the Pitfox)
9/26/06
After checking the car out, I have found water in the oil again . I do have a
383ci I can start putting together. More updates to follow.
I also wanted to update about the big race at Manzanita Speedway. It has been
cancled.
Looks like after making a
whole three races, we got 15th in points ROFLMFAO !

1/21/07
It is a new year here at Lumpkin Racing. We will be racing a Winter Series
race on Jan 27th out at Canyon Raceway.
When the regular season starts, we plan on having an extra motor as well so
we can stay competitive in the points running for a championship. OLT
Fabrication is stepping up to help with this & possibly RaceJesus Motorsports as
well. We think it will be a good season. Hope you all come out & join us.
1/27/07
Well, we raced today. Wish I would have gone golfing instead.
I drew a pill for pole position (front row, inside) As soon as the race
started, there was a problem with the motor. I did finish the heat race in 6th
place even with the problem & then pulled into the pits to figure it out. It
turns out that a push rod went completely thru the rocker arm so I was running
this race on seven cylinder's instead of eight.
I fixed this problem to get back out there for the main event starting 8th
row, outside (16th position) within a few laps of the race, someone spun in
front of me & I could not avoid hitting them. I didn't think the damage was too
bad & continued to race. Turns out the damage was worse then I thought.
Apparently the wreck caused the water pump to break, with the temperature gauge
reading 165 degrees, I decided to try to stay out on the track to see what was
going to happen. Well, apparently, the minor accident caused even more damage
then I could imagine. A couple more laps into the race, my transmission started
acting up. Without knowing what exactly was going on, I went into turn 3 full
throttle. My guess is, that i was leaking fluid from the transmission that was
broke in half from the accident & this sent me spinning over the top. Maybe it
was going over the top that broke the transmission in half <shrugs shoulders>
At this point, i'd had enough & pulled into the pits where I discoverd more
damage to the car, transmission & motor possibly then I care to get into. As if
this all was not enough, loading the car on the trailer, we popped a tire <sigh>
Not sure how long it will take or how much its going to cost to get this car
back on the track. Willing to trade for golf clubs :p
We did get to meet a cool guy who came out to race his Modified with us
today. Jeremy
Newberry
#62, NFL San Francisco 49ers.
So, there is the scoop for the first race of the 2007 Season. If this is any
indication how this season is going to be for me. I think I will stay home ! I
will update again soon & post a photo of the car.
I am beat to hell, exhausted & dissapointed.
I am really not sure how this minor damage caused
so much damage internally to the motor & transmission but with sponsors help, I
have located another transmission already & will be building two motors for it
to be ready for the regular season in March.
4/8/07 Happy Easter ! Hope everyone is blessed by God these days. Its been a
while since I have updated but
I have wanted to actually have something to update about :)
After many problems trying to get things fixed & working on the setup & motor, I
do believe its ready to run a top five as far as motor wise & I do believe the
setup is about ready as well. I am going to get the car scaled again because we
moved the motor back about another 1 1/2" towards the rear. The upgrades we did
to the motor & the new headers allowed me to make some setup adjustments i was
not able to do in the past on the camaro or monte carlo. If I can drive like I
use to, I believe this car will get me where i want to go, when I want to get
there ;) So here is a couple new photos of what I have been working on....
We hope to be on the track for the April 21st 2007 race.
Hope to see you there :)
5-4-07 Race Results
Sighhhhhhhh !
Another night at the races ! It was absolutly awesome racing Manzanita Speedway
where I was once pretty dominate & leading in points all year in 1998. A very
exciting evening & YES, the pitfox was missed !
Well, we didn't draw a good pill at all. #36 (shakes head) It seemed like all
would go well after we already had problems with the truck before we ever left
(closing the tailgate broke the back window)
Everyone was excited to the the #97 of Steve Lumpkin back on the track. The
announcer, Windy Mcdonald (arizona's best announcer if not the best in the

Soooo, anyways... We were in the 2nd heat, last row, outside. The car was
finally setup right after fighting with it all last season & all this season,
the setup was awesome. I could put that car anywhere I wanted on the track. This
was very exciting but very short lived when I noticed the temparature jump up
very high right before my overflow hose showed me I was overheating, sighhhhhh !
This sent me into the pits about the 2nd or 3rd lap of the heat race. I
discovered that both, my fan belt & power steering belt came off (no wonder it
was so hard to steer huh ?)
I quickly got this repaired so I could at least get some time on the track in
the main event & make some money, knowing the possiblity of it occuring again
was BIG. I was right, about the 2nd lap into the main, the belts came off again
& my night was over.
I should have been very bummed but the car felt so good after fighting with it
for so long that all I felt was excitiment for future races. After I get the
belt problem resolved, im sure we can run well. I still have another brand new
motor I need to pick up as well.
So, this is the latest update for the 2007 racing season for us here & I got
some of the first action photos I have had takin in a long time so they are
included here. We will be ready to race again soon, maybe Manzy again ;)

I have been working on things & trying to get it going but running into snags.
We will be back out soon, trust me ;)

Well, we did get back out there & for once the car felt like it was setup as
well as it was in the old days.
In the heat race, I was 2nd row inside. The leader took off & left me like a
bullet but I was able to hold on to 2nd place for 5 laps until my power steering
went out & I went up over the top.
I thought I got the problem fixed before the Main Event but apparently not. With
only one lap complete, I lost the power steering again & my temperature rose up
to 265 degrees really fast. I pulled into the pits. I was done for the night.
This is a constant problem for some reason. We went to aftermarket stuff to
try to correct this problem with belts coming off & its still occuring. If I can
get this takin care of, I feel we can run very well.
I will be back out there Oct 6th to try it again. I can only hope the two days
all day & night I spent trying to align pullies, has worked. I really want &
need to finish a race.
