Luger knobs Making the knobs
Here's an easy way to make the knobs. Cut a scrap of cherry wood ¼ inch thick and sand both sides smooth. Use a ¾" Forstner bit and just barely start the holes.
This will draw where to cut the knobs and also where to drill the hole for the ¼" dowel. No Forstner bit? Another way to make the buttons instead of using a Forstner bit… use a metal washer ¾" in diameter, draw the circle around it and the hole in the center will show where to drill. Drill a ¼" hole about 1/8" deep in the center of each circle. Cut ¼" dowels an inch long, little longer is okay.
"Pre-glue" each hole and each dowel end and glue dowels. When dry, cut the circles out, if not perfect no problem.
Chuck a 'raw' knob in the drill press and sand it round with coarse sandpaper. Then use fine sandpaper to smooth it out.
Next cut the dowel so that only 3/16" sticks out of the button. Each button takes a minute or less to sand. I always make a few extras 'just in case'. Pick buttons about the same size for each luger, as some will end up larger and some smaller…
Also you could use just a hand held drill to sand the buttons.
Nice looking knobs, huh?
