Community Director's Report
November
12, 2005
The
Clothes Closet, a Community Project, was organized by the League of Women
Voters of Baton Rouge in partnership with the Governor's Office of Women's
Service Program for Displaced Homemakers.
The purpose of the clothes closet is to provide a service place to find
suitable clothing to dress for job interviews. For many years the Clothes
Closet served that purpose, until the Governor closed the office several years
ago.
Presently,
the Clothes Closet is housed in the Council on Aging building on Florida Blvd.
Mr. Johnny Dykes, the director and a League member, rescued the League by
providing a place for storage. Because of limited space and no regular persons
to serve, the League became aware that we needed to close down this project
temporarily until a suitable place is found.
Some
of the clothing has been distributed to non-profit organizations in the Baton
Rouge community such as: Working to Achieve, the Catholic Migration Project,
several churches and the Community Association for the Welfare of School Childred (CAWSC). Letters have been received from these
organizations thanking the League for a wonderful service rendered to the
community.
