on Thursday, August 14, 2003 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Old State Capitol in Baton Rouge, La.
This exciting program is sponsored by the League of Women Voters and The LSU Academy of Politics,

The United States is a vastly changed place since September 11, 2001. After our experience of domestic terrorism, security measures once unimaginable have entered the routines of daily life: intensified airline passenger and luggage searches, heightened vigilance over the national infrastructure, and new civilian disaster preparedness plans that address the threat of terrorist acts as well as acts of nature. Our government has launched a wide-ranging “war on terrorism.”
This war on terrorism has ushered in another set of changes as well. New laws—The USA Patriot Act, The Homeland Security Act—have given government authorities increased powers to detain suspects, conduct searches and surveillance, and obtain information on private citizens. These measures have sparked widespread discussion throughout the United States about the nature of civil liberties in the age of global terrorism. Many have worried if these new laws are reshaping our democratic institutions by altering the constitutionally prescribed balance of power among the three branches of government. Others have vigorously supported expanding government investigative and enforcement powers as essential to preserving Americans’ fundamental rights to safety and security. With so much at stake, there is an urgent need to start a broad public dialogue on the bedrock of our democratic values.
In that spirit, the League of Women Voters and the Academy of Politics are launching a new program of study and conversation devoted to the general subject of civil liberties and constitutional protections in our time: Liberty Circles. Liberty Circles are democratic conversations intended to engage people in thoughtful, vigorous, exchanges of perspectives and ideas about the constitutional rights most of us take for granted. We hope that Liberty Circles will deepen Americans’ understanding of their rights and strengthen their commitment to keep these rights from being abridged.

Please plan to attend the Liberty Circle this Thursday, August 14, 2003, and help to prove that 227 years after the American Declaration of Independence; the principles in which the Founders of this nation believed that the securing blessings of liberty are worth, as they put it, “our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.”

Get the inside scoop on some of the legislation that was proposed during the 2003 legislative session affecting citizens' access to their state government and ethics legislation  on Thursday, July 10th, 2003.
Critics allege that the bills represent a conflict of interest or special interest bills, which affect the standards of conduct of the appointed and elected officials of this state.
Supporters allege these bills were offered for Economic Development and/or Homeland Security reasons!

State Representative Glenn Ansardi

La. Chemical Association - Desiree Lemoine
La. Dept of Natural Resources - Katherine Vaughan
La. Ethics Board - Grey Sexton, Esq.
