FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (9/20/94)
Miss Gaubatz is recognized internationally as one of the foremost masters of the bassoon and as an artist whose virtuosity and innovations are redefining the role of her instrument for the music world today. In addition to her work as concerto soloist and chamber musician, Miss Gaubatz has given many solo recitals, including three at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, devoted entirely to works for the unaccompanied bassoon, showcasing the instrument and its possibilities in ways previously considered impossible.
"When composers writing music for me ask what the limitations of the instrument are, I always tell them that it's their job to write the music however they feel it should be. It's MY job to figure out how to play it. NOT TO WORRY. So far, no one's stumped me yet," says she laughing.
Says Gaubatz, "I'm thrilled that people have gotten so excited about my performances, especially my professional colleagues. I love the audience's surprise, delight, and amazement when I tear into 'The Flight of the Bumblebee', 'The Minute Waltz', or some other piece traditionally considered unplayable on the bassoon."
Named "One of America's Ten Most Outstanding Young Working Women" by GLAMOUR Magazine, Miss Gaubatz has been hailed by American and European critics as "brilliant", "charming", and "delightful". Miss Gaubatz has performed as soloist on four continents and served from 1981 to 1984 as the Bassoon Professor at the prestigious Mozarteum Conservatory in Salzburg, Austria. In addition to being the first bassoonist ever to perform a solo recital in the Concert Hall of the Kennedy Center, she has been featured soloist there five times.
Miss Gaubatz was recently named the bassoon professor at Washington's prestigious Levine School of Music.
