Council High School Student
Holly Rasnake
Many people submitted ideas either directly or on Internet bulletin boards and blogs, but most asked that they NOT be considered for the prize because they wanted the prize to go to a library! AdoptALibrary.org applauds this spirit of generosity. These other responses included:
- Throw away coins and use old National Geographics as international currency.
- Create the new National Geographic diet. Encourage all rabid fad dieters to eat the back issues of National Geographic.
- Build a giant National Geographic magazine fort. Then live there. Forever.
And the poignant (if perhaps a little disturbing):
- Use them as weapons against cruel and heartless gnome invaders.
Council, Virginia (population approx. 3,000) consists mostly of retired and current coal miners, two small schools, and small country businesses. The town is planning to build a community library which will house reading and research materials and an additional community resource room where public service agencies and groups can hold workshops. Any books, computers, or other supplies to help them start a community library would be greatly appreciated.
The Council High School Library has already gotten help from generous AdoptALibrary.org visitors. After being listed only ten days, the librarian received donated books and was contacted by other potential donors. The library is asking for donations of books that pertain to all areas of high school curriculum, including fiction and nonfiction books, and is currently updating and expanding the biography section. They would prefer hardback books because they are more durable, but would happily accept classics in paperback form. It is important that the content be up-to-date and appropriate for students 13-18 years old.
