you *can* clean the inside faces of your scanner glass 
I cleaned the inside faces of both glasses on my epson "perfection 4990 photo" scanner. the photos here (and the captions below)
generally outline the procedure I followed. it's a procedure I "invented as I went along"...once underway, this procedure should be completed "post haste".
