How Do You Rate?
A Surf Rating System by the Viejos
Longboard Rider Rating System
Levels
- Level 0.0 - 0.25 swimmer
- Level 0.26 - 0.5 stoked beginner to stoked kook
- Level 0.6 - 0.9 dangerous kook to dangerous grem
- Level 1.0 - 1.5 standing grem to wannabe poser
- Level 1.6 - 1.9 delusional poser to delusional novice
- Level 2.0 - 2.5 humbled to average longboarder
- Level 2.6 - 3.6 Early Longboarder to "B" Team longboarder
This surfer should never enter the water without first taking a hit off his
trusty bota bag. Teaching the local girls basic surf etiquette, terms,
and slang and how to take a big swig outta the bota without touching the
lips to it.
- Level 3.7 "A" Team Longboarder
This person should still
be surfing only at gnarly beach
breaks, with no lifeguards harping about swimmers and surfers staying
south (or north of the black and yellow checkered flag). This surfer
enjoys doing standing island pullouts in the white water. This surfer
knows how board size and wave size will affect their surfing, and has
probably purchased several surfboards for most wave conditions.
- Level 3.8 Non-competitive occasionally delusional longboarder
This surfer has learned how to paddle the surfboard effectively
enough to not get it snapped in two by the first significant swell of
the winter. This surfer has become bored with riding the clean green
water parts of the wave and seeks out beginners to slalom through to
break up the monotony of the unbroken face of a wave. Will on occasion drop too many names.
- Level 3.85 Local Legend Longboarder
This surfer has learned right or left isn't a factor. Should
know the correct direction to go upon wave takeoff(Not like someone we
know who goes left on every wave). He knows how to spot riptides or
other water dangers and waits for good looking chicks to wander into
these areas so he can share his wave knowledge. This person knows, and
practices, proper surf etiquette, and carries prophylactic devices too.
This surfer is willing to give up a wave to another surfer if he knows
there will be a free beer waiting for him on the beach.
- Level 3.86 Legend Longboarder
This surfer practices the three second rule of surfing. It goes
like this.. "If I am sitting here on my peak three seconds before you
paddle out from way over there.. the wave is mine no matter where you
are positioned. Count two or three waves then take off. If you are on my
right -you go right... if you are on my left -you go left. Never under
any circumstances takeoff and turn in my direction."
- Level 3.9 Cruiser (The "Been there, done that category.)
This surfer is happy just standing there, but can occasionally whip his 10'4"
thirty pound Malibu around on a dime nearly skinning a clueless boogie boarder.
This surfer may plan regular surf trips to places that will
test his abilities -(Scorpion, Isla Viejo, and Church). This level of
surfer is not intimidated by aggressive locals (and has no pit bull) and
may even be known by reputation at most popular surf spots. He has
complete command of his wave riding abilities, in most situations.
- Level 4 Legend, Cruiser, Surfer, Surf Mogul.
This surfer has developed a unique surfing style that is easily
recognized by a peer group. He can surf hemisphere class level in
Hawaiian small or California large waves (depending on who you talk to).
He has surfed internationally, and may have a couple of sponsors. This surfer
can explain in layman's terms what effect too much rocker has, and what effect
various plan shapes and rail configurations will do for a board. He is not delusional about
weight to foam ratios like the level 1.6 crew is.
This surfer doesn't care about your last trip to Bali and or how much your
SUV cost you.
