September 4, 1996 Councilman Harry Mathis 202 "C" Street Mail Station A San Diego, Ca. 92101 Dear Mr. Mathis: This letter is my request that you have the City Council change Resolution # R- 283843, adopted 5/9/94, so as to prevent destruction of surfing space at La Jolla Shores beach. For years, surfers and bathers have co-existed at that beach. The marker between the two groups is a flag placed by lifeguads. Last year the Council passed the above resolution in response to "some bodysurfers" (??). to have the lifeguards move the flag north from its usual place at tower 22, north to tower 23. This destroys an excellent surfing area. About 5 or 6 years ago, in response to a similar attempt, surfing citizens and taxpayers made a huge effort to rescind that attempt - we went to numerous meeting, wrote many letters, etc. The attempt to move the flag north to #23 was soundly and rightfully rejected. It was wrong then and it's wrong now. The surfers at La Jolla Shores are a group of responsible adults and young people. Surfing is clean, healthy, and a wonderful sport. The Shores beach is especially good for beginners, as it has a gentle slope. Rank and file lifeguards lifeguards agree that the marker should be at tower 22. North of it there is a rip current that can catch bathers. Surfers know of it and are not affected. Also, a crowded surfing area leads to injuries among surfers. So, in summary, as a concerned citizen, taxpayer, and surfer, I request that you, my councilman, lead the move to change the resolution so that surfing is not hindered at La Jolla Shores beach.
