What is the cost for a Makanacoon kitten?
We feel that we currently have one of the TOP Health Screening Catteries! We screen all of our breeding cats for Cardiomyopathy by a Board Certified Cardiologist that uses a Dopplar. Some of our cats whose ancestry goes back to cats known to produce SMA (a Spinal Muscular Dystrophy in kittens) have been DNA tested for the disease and all are NEGATIVE and Non-Carriers. We have also tested our cats for the first gene mutation (there are many more to be found) identified by the University of Washington, that "may"? be linked to late Cardiomyopathy. This research is in its early stages, but most of or cats are NEGATIVE.
The expense to keep the number of cats that we have in our breeding program (that allows us to do beautiful out cross breeding within or cattery), our health screening expenses, showing expenses (helps us to test the quality of our cats against the Maine Coon standards of other breeders), vet bills, food bills, litter bills, etc., add up to figures that show little if anything is made offf of our kittens. (See www.mcbfa.org/breedcats.html)
It is because of this above that we are currently asking $800 for our pet kittens. We raise Maine Coons as a labor of love, not as a profit making venture. It defnitely takesa love for this woderful breed of cat to go to the extremes that we do to produce the healthiest and best kittens that we possibly can.
The price will vary if the kitten is classified as a show caliber.
We usually do a contract and ask for a deposit of $400 once our kittens have passed their first vet check at about 5 weeks of age.
When can I take home my kitten?
Each kitten gets 2 vet checks, 2 wormings, and 2 to 3 distempher shots before leaving for their new home at around 12 weeks of age.
When can I register my kitten with CFA?
When your kitten has been altered by your vet, please email or send a copy of your bill or a note from your vet stating that the kitten has been spayed or neutered. Once we get this paperwork, we will send you a blue slip to fill out. You will need to send this blue slip paper to CFA (Cat Fancier's Association) with a one-time fee of $15 to register your kitten. It is extremely important for you to register your kitten or it will never be listed under the parents as an offspring. I cannot impress upon any Makanacoon kitten buyers the importance of doing this!
Will my kitten get along with my dog and other cats?
Our kittens are handled everyday from 2 weeks of age on, and so are very balanced and socialized by the time they leave our cattery. Most litters are introduced to our wonderful Doberman - Hulia - and allowed to run around our home and play with Hulia before leaving. Hulia is a very sweet and patient dog, so the kittens get a wonderful introduction to dogs. And of course, they also get to socialize with our other Makanacoon kitties so they are very well-adjusted with other cats as well.
What kind of litter should we use?
Makanacoon kittens are used to clumpable litter. We get our litter from BJ's, but Petsmart has a wonderful litter called Kitty Attract that is a little pricey, but has little dust in it and a pheromone to attract cats.
Why does the contract state that I can't declaw my kitten? I don't want my furniture to be scratched.
Makanacoon kittens are NEVER to be declawed. Did you know that declawing doesn't mean that the nails are removed? Rather, the END DIGIT of EACH TOE is CUT OFF!! Can you imagine having the end digit of each of your fingers cut off just so you don't scratch a piece of furniture?!
What kind of food should I feed my kitten?
We feed our cats both dry and canned food. We feed the following mix of dry food at this time:
Royal Canin Kitten (available at Petsmart & Petco)
Royal Canin Baby Cat (available at Petsmart & Petco)
Prescription Science Diet TD for tartar control (available at the vet's)
Life's Abundance Premium Health Food for Kittens & Cats (you can get this on auto-ship)
Please remember that cats are not cows that should eat a lot of grains high in carbohydrates. Since cats are carnivorous, they must eat meast as the most important part of their diet. If put on just dry food, they can get diabetes, become obese, and develop many other illnesses.
We do not have our kittens on raw diet, but do crock pot chicken each week that is added into our canned food.
We feed canned food morning and night. The canned foods we use are:
Pro Plan Kitten or Max Kitten Chicken and Liver
Fancy Feast Minced Turkey
Fancy Feast White Meat Chicken or Turkey Florentine with Greens
We also use a vitamin program that we will share with kitten buyers when they pick up their kitten.
What should we do with our kitten when we take it home?
When you get a Makanacoon kitten, please do not put them immediately with your other animals. New babies need at least a week to get used to a whole new environment. Best place for them is in a bedroom where they can get used to a small area, and sleep with someone at night. Never put them in a room by themselves at night where they get no human contact.
Makanacoon kittens are litter trained by 5 weeks of age, so they don't have to be kept in a bathroom.
Should I get one of those kitty condos/scratching posts?
Absolutely! As babies, our kittens are trained by their moms to scratch on small cat trees that are put in the rooms they spend their first 9 weeks in. If you are able to, get your new kitten a nice cat tree. It will be their furniture to scratch on and climb in.
We recommend BJ Marketers in Florida as having wonderful cat trees. They are well made and will last for years!
When can I come over and visit my Makanacoon kitten?
To keep our kittens healthy, we do not allow visitation until they have had their first distemper vaccine at around
5 weeks of age. No kittens can be held until they are 9 weeks and have had their second distemper. The vaccine protocol we use is what works in our cattery and keeps our kittens the healthiest. A third distemper is usually given before the kitten leaves at 12 weeks.
We do send digital photos to kitten buyers on request, but sometimes this takes a few days to get done.
I'd like to see what a Maine Coon looks like, can I come over and visit?
We welcome visitation from serious potential buyers, but not to people who just want to see what a Maine Coon is. There are Cat Shows available, and some wonderful books on Maine Coons that will give anyone a great perspective on this wonderful breed.
Contacting Makanacoon Cattery
Because of a hectic schedule and a 24/7 job raising Maine Coons, it is not possible for me to always get back to you immediately, or send photos immediately on request. Please be patient. Reminders are always welcome if you don't hear from me immediately.
What do past Makanacoon kitten owners think of their kitten?
