By Daniel Gonzalez, AKA Bronislav the Damned
The end of the Glory Days of Chaos were marked with the end of 5th edition madness, and the advent of the Ravening Hordes. No longer could an enthusiastic general put together a few iron-hard blocks of Chaos Knights and Warriors and march grimly across the field, shrugging off shooting magic phases alike. When you got to the other side of the field it was the Chaos Cuisinart. The front rank of a Chaos Knight unit had more attacks than most infantry blocks had total, and if you put a hero in it? Forget about it! (pronounced: fuh-ged-uh-boud-ed).
Ravening hordes was still pretty good to us. I can still hear the moans and whines about how cheap the Chaos Knights were in comparison to other comparable units. Better call the Waaahmbulance. There was, however, a challenge to this new list. I have never had as many figures in my army as I do now with the Ravening Hordes list (so many to buy and paint). Strategy (say it with me now: strah-tuh-gee) started to creep into my battle plan. It happened one eveing when my Chaos Knights charged a block of High Elven spearmen and, much to my shock and dismay, they didn't break! I was immediately flanked by a unit of Silverhelms and summarily defeated and run down. After the initial shock wore off I realized that I would have to start using some of this strategy stuff that everyone was talking about. Lets face it folks, the hardest thing about 5th edition Chaos was trying to squeeze more than 17 models into a 2000 pt army.
The new Chaos Army Book (NEVER Codex) promises to bring more changes to the way we play. I say bring it on! Embrace the change! Embrace the CHAOS! Tzeentch has been working overtime, eh? I look at it as a way for me to learn new and exciting ways to put the Chaos Smackdown on some unsuspecting foes. Papa's got a brand new can of Chaos Whupass!
I intend this tactics article to be an ever-expanding ever-improving guide to quality battles, and hopefully victories, using the Chaos Warrior army. With the release of the Hordes of Chaos Army Book I will begin to write a weekly submission to this tacticus. I will give an overview of the army and a review of the units. I will cover army building and battle planning. I will cover maneuvers and special tactics. Finally as I play more games I will give specific pointers for each army as I come across them (this will give me an excuse to play more!).
