Our Trip to Huites this Fall of 2002 was outstanding. In the 3 days we caught well over 300 bass, with over 40 on the first day that were 5 lbs or better. I am happy to say that I managed to catch the big fish of the trip....a nice 7 pounder on a custom poured fluke. Thanks to the quick release of a "possibly" larger fish by our guide Manuel, my fishing buddy Scott Webster has to live with me reminding him that I caught the big fish of the trip till we return to Huites! Most of the big fish were caught by "still fishing" spinnerbaits. Yes I said still fishing spinnerbaits, cast them to a likely spot, let it settle to the bottom, then retreive it in small hops with 20 or so seconds between the hops. The fish were hitting mostly while the spinnerbait(skirt / trailer white / chartreuse & the large blade HAD to be brass or copper colored) was lying still on the bottom. I have NEVER fished a spinnerbait like this before! Water was dropping fast, most of the big fish looked like they could use a good meal.
Be prepared to actually have to fish to catch the big fish. Most of the fish we caught were on Rattle traps, Flukes, Spinnerbaits and 7 inch Motor Oil Hawg Callers. The last day we got into great top water actions in some flooded trees between canyons 1 & 2 in the main lake.
With Scott providing the entertainment to keep us laughing, including an attempt with a flyrod that cast his hat farther than the fly, we laughed the entire 3 days. Thanks to everyone especially Manuel, who kept us catching fish despite our efforts.
