PRAYER & PRAISE

"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding.  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."  Proverbs 3:5, 6

Praises:
1.  We praise the Lord that to date He has allowed us to schedule 37 5-Day Clubs for later this summer.
2.  We praise the Lord for how He is working out many details for camp including additional volunteers calling to serve with us at this eleventh hour. (Included on this long list is the return of the bus from mechanical repairs just this morning.)
3.  We praise the Lord for the safety He provided the Westbrooks during their trip to Michigan in direct response to prayer.
4.  We praise the Lord for His empowerment and enabling.  Over Memorial Day Week-end we taught 76 different children in two groups and last week-end we had the privilege to provide a training seminar for 18 teachers in Cross City.

Prayers:
1.  Please be praying for Christian Youth In Action and Camp Good News.  Both kick off Monday.  We will have many people traveling. Our team members will all need extra strength and protection for their health. We want this time to be used effectively for the Kingdom of God and that He will be glorified.
2.  Please be praying  for the reception of our newsletter which was mailed yesterday.  We pray that God will use it to stir people's hearts to higher level of commitment to reaching children with the gospel.
3.  Please be praying for God's provision to meet several pressing financial needs.
4.  Please be praying for God to direct us to another company that would be willing to provide us with a business credit card.  Our card company decided to close their business credit department with four-day's notice.  We have many purchases that are facilitated with a credit card especially this time of year with diesel, food, and other camp related expenses.

Update:
We asked you to pray for Evelyn, Cheri, and Steve W. the last P&P.  Evelyn has been moved to rehab and would still welcome your prayers.  Cheri and Steve W. I believe are in better health but would also appreciate your continued prayers.

God is in control.  While sometimes it is hard to wait on the Lord we know that He has a plan and a purpose through this all.  Thank you for your prayers.  May God continue to bless you!

In service to the King for the children,

We made it back home

We are back in Ecuador. We started our journey down around 1am on Friday morning. Craig's parents drove us down and waited until we had our luggage packed. There is no way I could have done this alone as Craig's dad and Brooke had to haul my crates from ticketing to a special place where they would have to be screened due to their size. Going through security is always the most difficult part. Valerie needs to take on plenty of water (which all has to be screened individually). But we made it through with minimal meltdowns.
We all slept some on the flight to Panama. The breakfast wasn't that great, so the girls didn't miss out on much. We filled out our health screening and exited the plane in Panama. On the plane with us were a group of students (all wearing masks). I figured they were all from Panama since that is where the most people were masked up last time. The girls and I found a perfect corner with seats that did not have arm rails - so Valerie and I took a 2 hour nap (Brooke wasn't tired). We waited another half hour, then boarded our plane for Quito. The students boarded with us - all masked up still. It was a bumpy flight, and the landing in Quito is always interesting as they speed up right before landing and we can practically see what people are watching on TV in the nearby homes as we land.

We filled out another health screening, but no one took it when we exited the plane. We went through immigration (and LOVED being back in Ecuador where there are special lines for women with children). A man came up to me while I was at immigration and told me he was going to help me with my bags and to not lift any, but just wait for him to come. I thought 'wow, how nice is that'. We then realized why we still had our health forms. A masked up doctor questioned each of us (in Spanish). Then, one by one, we had to have our photos taken by two women (also in masks) - apparently, Ecuador is now very afraid of swine flu.

After that, we were free to get our luggage. I wasn't going to count on the man who approached me in immigration to actually help, so I went to the man with the carts and requested two men and two carts. Brooke then watched Valerie as I pointed to which bags were ours (and again LOVED being back in Ecuador). The men loaded all of the bags on the carts and then unloaded them onto the xray machines and loaded them back on the carts again. The doors opened to the crowd in the airport lobby and there was Craig! He told me he had a big plan to sneak in and get all of my luggage onto carts before we came through, but he was caught by one of the guards. He explained what he was trying to do, and they said they would send in a man to come and help me get my luggage (hence the man who approached me in immigration). We got in the van and I was curious where my other two children were. Craig said that was part of the surprise.
He told Vicente to drive to an address in Quito (and I was praying that part of the surprise was not staying somewhere in Quito as I didn't take my altitude medicine). We arrived at a beautiful home of some friends of ours. Courtney and Natalie Joy were over there playing with their children. All five children were EXCELLENT at keeping the surprise a secret. We get in the van and drive to another location. Everyone except the girls and I went into a home and came out with a squirrel monkey. Our friends are moving to Shell in two months and they wanted us to house sit a monkey someone was giving them. Then, Craig told me to go in the house because there was a bird for me to look at. It was an Amazon parrot that greeted me with many "hola" "cookito" "corre corre papi". Apparently, the man who had the animals is moving and was giving them away for free. The bird got right on my hand and was super friendly. While I was in the house alone, Craig was out telling our friend that I might not want the bird....then I came out holding it. They strapped the cage to the roof of the van and we were off to Shell. I held the bird on my lap for the 5 hour drive (thankfully Craig brought a towel to put under the bird. The monkey did escape once. It went all over the van and even across the steering wheel as Vicente was driving - thankfully, Vicente has a good sense of humor. Craig managed to catch it and put it back in the cage (and then he cable tied the cage doors closed so we would not have a repeat once it was dark). We made it home around 8pm, unloaded people, luggage, and pets and went to bed.

Prayer and Praise:

This morning, Valerie enjoyed eating breakfast at the Grizzly House where we are staying. She opted for a container of cream cheese to accompany her fruit loop cereal. We then headed to the cafeteria for bacon and sausage (it is all about having lots of variety to snack on :)
We were about an hour early for our appointment, but we were able to spend some time with Grandpa Tom (one of our all time favorite volunteers here). That was a special treat. We then went back to hear about the MRI. The MRI showed a slightly smaller tumor and they are no longer concerned with the left side of the brain because there are plenty of decent size collateral vessels. Now, they are looking more at the right side (which wasn't an issue before) - I guess because it might not have collateral vessels already made.
We then went to occupational therapy. We saw little Maria who is here with her mom from Panama. Then another family went up to them to talk. The mom looked at me, and it was our landlord's daughter with her son Elian Gonzalez. We hugged, and cried and hugged some more. Elian looked very good. They will be here for over 12 more months - which was the cause of some of the tears - she misses Ecuador, her family, etc. It must be so hard to be in another culture - without family - on top of all of the medical stuff. They are staying at the Target house though, which is very nice. He will be on chemo for another year and will have a second surgery on the other side of his neck in six months. It sounds like the cancer spread to the lymph nodes and that some had to be removed, and the others will be removed later. It was wonderful to see them, but sad that we would not be staying here longer. What an amazing way the Lord orchestrated us to rent their house in Ecuador so that we would get to know them, and then they would be able to talk with us and get information on coming here for treatment.
Valerie then had her OT appointment and the therapist commented on how much improvement she sees in her.
Tomorrrow we will fly back to FL, then will fly to Ecuador a week from today :)

Valerie loves St Judes so much, that she asked to come to the MRI waiting room to play for a while since we are leaving tomorrow. (Which is why I have time to write this update).

Celeste Welch

Prayers:

CT scan for tomorrow was canceled. I think we were bumped due to more pressing cases (which I understand because if Valerie Grace was a pressing case, I would want her bumping someone else). Anyway - Valerie Grace, praise God, is symptom free, so we will have the scan done Monday morning. Lord willing. We have been trying to have this done since last March - who knew scheduling a CT with sedation would be so difficult. One more week, we will be in the land of fast finger scheduling where they always seem to have time to get everyone in - St Judes is seriously the master of organized scheduling - they have a one stop shop that does all of the working around so you just go from place to place to place.

We are now scheduled for CT Monday morning at 7am.

Heartstrings and Bright Lights (LC)
Stephanie Johns 386-755-5520 or tsjohns@comcast.net

Heartstrings is a meeting to encourage homeschool moms.

We meet the last Tuesday of each month from 7:00-9:00 at the home of Sherry Miller in Lake City.
For directions, call 386 755-5520 or email tsjohns@comcast.net

We will be sharing testimonies this year of what God is doing in our families.
This group shares a common thread that we all desire to be the wife and mom God wants us to be.
We realize that it is God who is working in us and He alone can transform us and in so doing will also tranform our homes and families into what He desires them to be.
We gain much by coming together and encouraging one another as we walk along this path together.
Bring a friend and a snack to share....

Bright Lights meets at the same time and is for girls ages 10 and up. Please bring your Bible and book.  This is a new book and you can order it before the meeting if you go to www.brightlights.info
If you do not get your book ordered in time for the first meeting, we will have copies available the first night. We will have two classes this year. An older class led by Lynn Ellis and Sherry Miller and a younger class led by Ester Gamboa and Breya Register.

Bright Lights is a discipleship program by Sarah Malley.
The purpose is...
1.To encourage the pursuit of godliness
2.To provide positive peer influence and accountability
3.To have a group which can be a team to minister to others

What is a “bright light”? It is a girl who knows how to respond just right to people and circumstances. It is a girl who has Biblical convictions and commitments, and is able to go through her teenage years strong for the Lord without stumbling as many do. It is a girl who touches the lives of others by her servant’s spirit and the message of eternal life through Jesus Christ. God wants bright lights! There is a great need for more of them in this generation of darkness.

The Moms’ Meetings are all about encouragement - encouragement to love the Lord more, to love our husbands and children more, to love one another a little more in His Name.  It’s Christian fellowship with warm and loving, like-minded women from many different circumstances, different backgrounds and different churches. We share with each other our victories and our trials, laugh a little, cry a little, and pray for one another.  And starting in October, a mom and her teen daughter said they would like to open our meeting with a couple of worship songs.  If you haven’t come before, if you haven’t come in a while, I hope you will join us!  I know you will be blessed.

From Mardy: This is a new class being offered through the Moms’ Group, and I’m very excited about it.  Our son, Stephen, learned a great deal about sharing his faith with kids his own age through Way of the Master before he left for college.  I just ordered workbooks for our family as our sons, Patrick and Joel, will be attending, and I’ll be as well whenever I am not helping out in another area.  This is an outstanding class for teens as well as parents and relates very well on how to communicate Christ to this generation.  Here is a note from the Griffises about the course:

From Melinda, Kelcee and Kember Griffis smand4ks@alltel.net

We'd like to invite you to join us for the Way of the Master Basic Training Course! We (Melinda Griffis and daughters Kelcee and Kember) will be facilitating it during the 6:00 - 7:00 time slot before each Moms’ Meeting.  This evangelism training program has been a great blessing to our family, encouraging and equipping us to reach out to the lost. Now in turn, we want to pass the blessing on to your family.  You can find out more about the Way of the Master by going to www.wayofthemaster.com

If you are interested in attending, just go to:
www.livingwaters.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=WOTM-BTC to order your family's Basic Training Course Study Guide (only $5.99 plus S&H), and then contact us to let us know you'll be coming. There will be a very nominal one-time fee (probably under $2 per family) for other class materials. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us. Hope to see you there!

HOMESCHOOLERS "BEGINNING OF THE YEAR" PICNIC (HAW)
Mike and Juli Stewart  mandjstewart@cox.net

Dear Families,
We are inviting you to come to Camp Good News on Saturday, September 26, 2009 between 10:00 AM till 4 PM.  This is for any homeschooling family.  We would like to start off the year with a fun family picnic and fellowship time.  Please bring your family's lunch and a dessert to share.  There is a grill available.  Lunch-time will be at noon.  There is a $6 fee per family for this event.

Facilities include grill, ice, swimming in lake, pontoon platform, canoes, water slide (BRING YOUR OWN INFLATABLE RAFT!!), volley ball and basketball courts (bring your own balls), and a playground, activity field for running or soccer, non-motorized dirt bike trail that intertwines through woods and rock wall for younger children.  There will be no lifeguard on duty.  There are rest rooms and changing rooms.

We and the camp ask that you wear modest bathing attire.

Directions: Camp Good News, Hawthorne, FL is east on SR 20. Go to and through Hawthorne. Go 4 miles to 20-A. Turn Right on 20-A. Go 1/2 mile to Twin Lakes Rd (and Camp sign), and turn Left. Camp Good News will be down the dirt road, on the right, clearly marked.

(BRING YOUR OWN INFLATABLE RAFT!!  We have found the 74" x 28" pool lounger ... the one that looks like it has cup holder all in it ... really works the best for the slide.  Also, a large doughnut inner tube is good.)

FUNDRED DOLLAR BILL PROJECT
Jane Gravois flcreate@yahoo.com

You are invited and encouraged to participate in The FUNDRED DOLLAR BILL PROJECT, an innovative artwork made of millions of drawings. "This creative collective action is intended to support OPERATION PAYDIRT, an extraordinary art/science project uniting three million children with educators, scientists, health care professionals, designers, urban planners, engineers and artists. Together they are working to make safe the lead polluted soil of New Orleans that places thousands of children at risk for severe learning disabilities and behavioral problems, including violent crime".

-If successful this scientific method of plants absorbing heavy metals can be applied to other major cities with heavy metal pollution!-

At its simplest, all that is involved is downloading the template for the blank Fundred dollar bill, drawing your creative ideas onto it and sending it to the nearest collection center. There is now one in Gainesville! A cool armored truck fueled with vegetable oil will pick up the bills! The project can be turned into a lesson appropriate to introduce though any number of subjects including social studies, science, community service, history, political science, or art and design. Ultimately it is hoped your children's contributions will demonstrate that their creative actions can make a difference.

For more perspective on how to join the fun please check out the site: www.fundred.org

Included is the template, lessons plans, an art gallery of bills already submitted and interviews with Mel Chin, artist resposible for the conception of the project. Look for his sculpture 'Safehouse', and actual house in New Orleans transformed into a 'vault' for the Fundred dollar bills until they move onto Washington, D.C.

If you decided to participate in the project, I've set up a collection center in Gainesville where you can send your bills!

The Fundred team wants homeschoolers to have a voice! Participate and then spread the word!

Thanks you and have fun!
Jane Gravois

Summer Camps: Florida Etiquette & Protocol (ALA)
Corporate and Personal Training Instructing Adults,Teens and Children

Everyone likes to be treated with courtesy and respect. Good manners and good fun go hand-in-hand. Our company teaches young ladies and gentlemen how to conduct themselves properly in any social setting. Teens are taught social graces, dining etiquette and business protocol. We will help them enhance their confidence in any situation, giving them an edge both socially and professionally.  By acquiring the skills of etiquette early in life, teens have greater potential to step forward to meet their lifelong goals. Those with proper etiquette training are more likely to carry themselves in social and dining situations with confidence.

We are pleased to announce that we will be holding Summer Etiquette Camps: June 8 - 12 and July 6 - 10 at First Baptist Church of Alachua (14005 NW 146th Ave, Alachua, FL.)  Classes for children ages 5-10 will be held in the mornings from 9-12 pm and classes for youth ages 11-17 will be held in the afternoons from 1-4 pm.

We teach through quality instruction and fun activities that help make learning manners fun! We believe in non-stuffy etiquette classes. Almost every manner rule coincides with a fun-interactive role playing activity. These camps can give the student the tools in a motivational environment that builds self-esteem and the desire to present oneself properly in any setting.

The camps will include:

Greeting and Handshakes
Business Etiquette
Showing Appreciation and Being Thankful
Showing Respect For Others
Conversation Skills
Party Manners
Respectfulness
Honoring and Obeying Parents and God's Other 9 Rules
Responding To Invitations
Church and Theater Etiquette
Guest Manners
Telephone Manners
Thank You Notes
The 65 Dining Manners
Utensil Placement
Restaurant Manners
Navigating and Identifying The Place Setting
Proper Tea Manners,
Eating Difficult Foods
The Formal Meal
American and Continental Eating Styles

There is individualized classroom instruction with a maximum of 25 students per class. At the end of each class is a formal dinner followed by an awards ceremony that friends and family are welcome to attend.

The cost of each class is $195 per child.  Registration and payment received before April 1st will qualify for a discount with the cost being $185 per child.  Our registration form is available by email or from our website (under the “Events” tab) :

If you have questions, you may contact me by return email or by phone at 352-225-1069.

The Rape Aggression Defense Program (GNV)

After having taken this class with my daughter, I am even more convinced that the information provided is invaluable.  This class is geared towards teens aged thirteen through senior aged women. If you have an injury, they are mindful of that in training.  One dear lady made use of her walking cane very effectively. Deputy Shawn Pagel has taught classes to school groups, church groups, groups of friends, and more.  Currently, three summer camps for kids are in the works which will have a focus on safety entitled something like Resisting Aggression Defense for children of both genders.  It's my understanding that these deputies volunteer their time towards this program as it is obviously something they feel very strongly about.  This is currently offered as a free program so please share this information with friends, family, etc., so we can demonstrate a need and desire for this type of personal safety program.

~Odette Hinson

The Rape Aggression Defense program, known as RAD, is a self-defense course specifically and only for women. The program was founded in 1989 by a former campus police officer. Today the course is taught at more than four hundred colleges and universities and has trained more than four thousand instructors and more than one hundred fifty thousand women. The program’s instructional objective is "to develop and enhance the options of self-defense, so they become viable considerations to the woman who is attacked." The growing wide spread acceptance of this system is primarily due to the ease, simplicity and effectiveness of our tactics, solid research, legal defensibility and unique teaching methodology.

The camp will be held July 13th-17th, one week only, with two different age groups and new material for returning dancers.

Please note that we now have a great NEW LOCATION for 2009 - the Mile Run Neighborhood Clubhouse (near Hunter's Crossing Publix). Some of you will find this northwest Gainesville location more convenient to where you live. I apologize to any of you who may now have a slightly longer drive. I think that all of you will appreciate the clean, secure, family-oriented locale, situated in an easy-to-find residential area rather than a downtown business district. We'll now have both a water fountain and a kitchen - with a fridge for your child's snacks and drinks - at our disposal.

There is still plenty of parking. Though we will no longer have a parent waiting room available, there is a covered area just outside
the Clubhouse, and we'll be right beside some easy, pretty walking trails.

Both a registration form and an informative flyer can be e-mailed to you, so please ask for them. I hope you will all be able to participate again, and I hope you enjoy fun and relaxing summers with your families!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Registration is ongoing up until the camp begins, but for the past two years camps have filled, and payment is required for me to hold a spot in the camp.

Please let me know if you have any questions. A registration form, a
camp description, and a brief professional bio of myself are all
attached.

Fondly,
Ms. Sarah

American Heritage Girls

While AHG’s mission statement is to “Build women of integrity through service to God, family, community and country”, we recognize that our overall mission as part of God’s family is the Great Commission, as commanded by our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Christian and non-Christian youth alike are bombarded daily as today’s culture attempts to rob them of moral absolutes. This lack of a moral barometer creates a tumultuous sea of confusion for today’s girls.

Girls want to make meaning out of their lives and statistics show that girls have a high desire to believe in a higher being. What will that belief system be? Will it be of false idols or the one true God? According to Barna Research, if youth do not make a commitment to Christ by age 12, the probability of them finding Him during their life is extremely low.

Given the pop-culture icons present in today’s society, there is an obvious need for a cultural change for our nation and its daughters; a need for girls to know the love of Christ, the joy of lasting friendships and the fun of new wholesome experiences –in essence, the need for a ministry for girls that has transforming significance.

The small, all-girl unit structure in AHG provides a nurturing environment ripe for learning and the building of positive relationships. The AHG program grows as a girl grows. The program structure allows a girl to be involved from age 5 and well into adulthood. This longevity of experience and consistency of messaging allows the program to be life changing to its members.

Bible Bee

1st National Bible Bee - $260,000 in prizes for ages 7-18

$100,000 prize to top winner!!

You may have heard of the national Spelling Bee.  Why not a Bible Bee?  Could the Bible actually be as important to learn as good spelling?  Could someone actually value people learning the Bible so much that they would give bigger rewards for a national Bible Bee than the famous Spelling Bee?

Hi.  My name is Phil Walker.  I am the Scripture Memory coordinator at Upton Lake Christian school in Clinton Corners, NY.  Memorizing Scripture and encouraging others to develop a love for and commitment to the Bible has been my main passion and life calling ever since a verse I had memorized in high school at Faith Academy (Manila) came back to me several years later and led me to place a saving faith in Jesus Christ.

You can imagine my thrill when I saw the ad in World magazine for the first national Bible Bee, then went to www.biblebee.org to learn more.  The Shelby Kennedy foundation is partnering with World magazine and Patrick Henry College to run this first annual world class Bible Bee.

The deadline for registering to run a local Bible Bee is January 31st.  Contestants can sign up for the Bible Bee through April 30thMay 1st we find what Scripture content we will be quizzed over.  (Participants may use KJV, NKJ, NASB, NIV, or ESV.)      Then after a summer of study, the local contests are held around the country on Sept 12th, 2009.  The top 100 finishers in each of the 3 age categories (7-10; 11-14; 15-18) will go to Washington DC for the final competition Nov 4th - 6th and a chance at the outlandish cash prizes.

I encourage you to consider running a local Bible Bee.  What a great outreach and service for your Christian community this could be for your school, church, homeschool association, etc!  Or you could see if there already is a local contest near you and join them.  We would love for anyone near Clinton Corners, NY to help us run our local contest.

I got to believe that there are many 7-18 year olds in every Christian school, every church, every homeschool group, every Bible Quiz and Bible Bowl team, every Awana club, etc. who would be thrilled to participate in this first annual Bible Bee.  I pray that one way or another, everyone who would want to participate will hear about it.  Any help you could give towards spreading the word would be greatly appreciated.

Please feel free to contact the Bible Bee directly at www.biblebee.org or by calling toll free (888)3 - Bible - B  (888-324-2532) for more information or with any questions you have.  (They will be taking a Christmas break Dec 24th - Jan 5th)  Or you may also contact me at philjohn1558@yahoo.com or (845) 416-8010 or through my facebook group "Bible Bee - I can't wait"  www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=101543350152&ref=mf

A missionary who recently returned to the USA made this observation, "The unchurched in the USA in the late 50s knew the Bible much better than those in church today."  This is especially sad given today's high number of Christian schools, colleges, homeschool groups, camps, retreats, etc.  I pray, Lord willing, that God will use this Bible Bee as an inspiration to help us combat Biblical illiteracy in the US church, leading to a change worth every penny of the  $260,000 the Shelby Kennedy Foundation has committed to annually invest.

I included some helps below for those who are interested in participating in this first annual Bible Bee.  May God bless you as you get to know Him better and better through His Word, and as you help inspire and equip the next generation of Christians to truly get to know the Biblical God.

I hope to see many of you, and/or the young people you told about this historic  first national Bible Bee in Washington, DC Nov 4th - 6th!!

In Christ,

Phil Walker

PS  For those outside the US who receive this, I would ask you to pray for the impact the Bible Bee will have on the US church.  I also know that the Shelby Kennedy Foundation does have plans to eventually run Bible Bees overseas.  You can contact them through the website and let them know you would love to see a national Bible Bee in your country.

PPS  Here at Upton Lake Christian school we are very excited about doing everything we can to help our students get the most out of the Bible Bee.  We have about 80 students and I am expecting around 50-60 of them to take this opportunity very seriously and work hard to try to be one of the 300 finalists invited to Washington DC.  We would like to share our ideas with you to help you inspire your young people to also dive into the Bible this summer.  We would also welcome any tips or suggestions you could give us.

May 1st  Obviously we can't do too much before they tell us May 1st which content will be quized over.  I have informed all teachers and the administration of this date and am planning a big Scripture memory kick-off and a mini school wide Bible Bee to send them into the summer.

Summer Camps:  I hope, Lord willing, to run several day and/or overnight Scripture Memory summer camps or weekend clinics to help people prepare for this first Bible Bee.

The only one fully scheduled is an NIV based overnight Bible Bee camp at Camp Iroquoina (www.campiroquoina.org ) June 22nd - 26th in Hallstead, PA (15 minutes from Binghamton, NY) which features The Stevensons www.getthejoy.com from Jacksonville, FL who will be teaching us tons of NIV Scripture songs throughout the week.

I will also, Lord willing, run an NIV based 1 week day Bible Bee camp in or near Clinton Corners, NY (1 hour south of Albany; 2 hours north of NYC) Exact dates in August and location TBA

I hope to, Lord willing, run a overnight NIV based Bible Bee camp this summer in the midwest. Location and Dates TBA.

I am open to running more NIV based Bible Bee week long camps or weekend clinics throughout the summer as God leads and opens doors.

Potential open weeks include June 15th - 19th; June 29th - July 3rd; July 27th - August 21st.

If you would be interested in me running a NIV based Bible Bee camp or weekend clinic in your area, or would like encouragement/support as you run your own Bible Bee camp and/or clinic, feel free to call me at (85)416-8010 or email philjohn1558@yahoo.com

Scriptorium 2009  There is an annual celebration of Scripture where Bible enthusiasts from around the country converge on Hannibal, MO to quote several books of the Bible.  This year will cover GENESIS, EXODUS, DANIEL, LUKE, GALATIANS, REVELATION and will feature professional Scripture dramatist Marquis Laughlin presenting DANIEL 1-6.  Scriptorium 2009 meets April 24th - 26th (which means the Scripture we hear that is included in the Bible Bee list given out May 1st will still be fresh in our minds) and is free (including food and lodging) for everyone who quotes at least one chapter.  Chapters that are still available include GENESIS 14, 17-20, 23, 25, 27-36;  EXODUS 16-19, 21-25, 31, 35-37; LUKE 13.  For those who can make it, you will get to meet other Bible Bee contestants from around the country as well as be inspired and learn tips from older Scripture memory enthusiasts.  Those wanting more information about Scriptorium 2009 can go to my website www.scripture-memory-support.org or contact us through Facebook at "Scriptorium 2009"  www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=101543350152&ref=mf#/group.php?gid=37020586378  I would love to see you this April in Hannibal.

Visual Bible:  There is a word for word (NIV) Visual Bible DVD made for MATTHEW and ACTS as well as a mostly word for word (NLT) of JOHN that we will encourage our students to watch and get familiar with before May 1st.

Scripture Songs:  Nothing beats Scripture songs to help Scripture memory stick and be enjoyable at the same time.  There are tons of songs out there.  I praise God for the many people who have used their talent in this way.  A list of some Scripture song providers (mostly NIV) can be found on the links page of my www.scripturememorychallenge.org website.  I have 2 songwriters who have written Scripture songs for me in the past on call ready to write new songs when we get the list May 1st.

Iva Hoth's Picture Bible:  It came out in the 1970s, but I know of nothing better to help people learn and enjoy much of the content of the Bible (especially the often hard to get through Old Testament)  I first read the Picture Bible when I was around 10, and I still read it today (when I don't give away my last copy).  I have read it through close to 50 times and have given several 100 away.  We highly encourage all of our students to read and love Iva Hoth's Picture Bible.

The New Testament One Year Challenge:  This is a list of one key verse for every chapter of the NT.  We will encourage our students who want to excell at the Bible Bee to memorize all 260 verses before May 1st, as this, along with the Scripture they already know, should give a great framework for whatever NT verses are assigned May 1st.  There will be a support group both on and off Facebook (www.scripture-memory-support.org ) that will encourage each other in memorizing these 260 verses starting Feb 1st, 2009 and going through April 30th.  You can get a head start by seeing the entire list of 260 verses in the translation of your choice and/or receive a daily email devotional based on these verses (NIV) by going to www.scripturememorychallenge.org

Drama: To see how our little school uses Scripture in our Dinner Theater productions, you can go to www.youtube.com/results?search_query=scripturechallenge&search_type=&aq=f  to see scenes from my latest two Biblical Drama epics "Jesus, Masterful Teacher" featuring The parables of The Sower, The Treasure Hidden in the Field, and The Unmerciful Servant quoted and acted out; and "The Sermon on the Mount"  Both of these dramas are purposely not copyrighted so that anyone can use them for God's glory.

I hope some of these ideas will help and/or encourage you as you prepare for the 1st National Bible Bee or as you simply get to know Scripture better and better.  Please feel free to share any ideas or tips you have with us.

In Christ,

Phil Walker

Civil Air Patrol (GNV)

Greetings,
My name is Daniel Cook and I am a cadet leader in the local Civil Air Patrol squadron. If you’re unfamiliar with us, we are, first and foremost, a community service volunteer organization. In addition, we provide young people aged 12-21 with opportunities for leadership training, aviation/aerospace education, character development and much more. I wanted to contact you because many of our most outstanding members (including Cooks and Eades) are or have been from homeschool families. We wanted to reach out to the local homeschool community to ensure that everyone is aware of the wonderful opportunities available to young people in our organization.

Our local squadron will be accepting new applicants in April. In fact, we are holding an open house the second Thursday in April. I wanted to contact you to ask if you can pass along the information to your group.

Our open house will be held on Thursday, April 9th at 7:00 PM at Southwest United Methodist Church in Gainesville. A map can be found on our website at www.gainesvillecap.org . Please pass along my contact information to any interested families.

I can be reached at drhcook@comcast.net .

Fencing Classes for Homeschoolers!!!

I just found out that there is a fencing class for Homeschoolers in Gainesville.  It is not advertised anywhere & I only found out because I met the owner/instructor.   My 3 kids signed up today, bringing the total in the class to 6.  Please see his website for directions: ~Heather R.
www.floridafencingacademy.com/FloridaFencingAcademy.com/Welcome.html

The class for Homeschoolers is every Friday, 9:30am-11:30am.  (He told me there is an hour of warm-up we were welcome to come to if we wanted to get there @ 8:30am)   He charges $60/mo per student, BUT, he (being a father of 5 himself) gives a discount for multiple children.... I'm not going to say what he gave me, but I will say that I'm paying 1/2 what I was going to be charged at the other place to do fencing in Jonesville, & it's for 2 hrs a week compared to their 1hr.  My kids are very excited to get starting with this, & are hoping to make some new friends.  Please come check out a class (I'm sure he'd let you come try it out before signing up).

Golf/Landscape/Forestry Lake City Community College

Welcome back and Happy New Year!

We are all having to deal with budget cuts which affects travel, but we still need to get good information to students about career opportunities where there are jobs even in our slow economy. We have jobs in the golf, landscape, and forest industries; more jobs than we can fill. We need outside oriented, college bound, management oriented students. Interestingly, the landscape industry is in dire need on managers. Our programs are:

1.       Golf Course Operations – 3 years – AS degree
2.       Landscape Technology – 2 years – AS degree
3.       Agribusiness Management – 2 years – AS degree
4.       Forest Operations – 1 year - certificate
5.       Turf Equipment Technology – 1 year – applied technology diploma

Also, remember that our AS degrees above articulate to Saint Leo on our campus so that in two more years students can earn a bachelors in business on top of our AS degree; very powerful combination!

Hello,
My name is Patricia Littrell and I am the Regional Manager with Pacific Intercultural Exchange (P.I.E.), a nonprofit educational organization.  I am working with international students coming to your community to attend local high schools in the fall.  They are in need of host families.  These students come from a variety of backgrounds and have many different interests.  I have successfully placed students with home school families many times and it has been beneficial for everyone.  The opportunity to learn about another culture, another language and another part of the world is enriching for your children as well as our students.

All students must have a family to call their own before August 30th.  I am hoping that some kind and loving families will be interested in opening up their heart and home to one of them.  There are few opportunities in this world where an individual can take an active hand in making the world a better place.  This is such an opportunity!

You can go to the following website to take a look at the teens in need of an immediate home.
Go to: http://www.pieusa.info
User Name: Family PLittrell
Password:  pie6775

There is no such thing as a typical host family!  Single-parent families, retired couples, families with young children, no children, as well as those with teenagers or who are empty-nesters have all had successful hosting experiences and embrace the opportunity to share their lives.  Host families are asked to provide a bed, meals and a loving home environment.  Students are between the ages of 15-18, come with their own personal spending money to cover such expenses as clothing, school lunches, school supplies and entertainment.  They have their own medical insurance.  Mostly, they have a lot of love to give their American family!

Thank you in advance for helping to make a dream come true!   If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact me.

Kind Regards,
Patricia Littrell

Haven Horse Ranch

We have one of the finest programs around; not because we think so, but because our moms think so. We have a copy of our flyer for lessons and summer camps to forward to anyone.  Please call and ask or visit our web site.

The results have spoken for themselves for the past 20 years and over 4,000 children that have come through our programs. The only problem is that even after that long and that many successes, we are one of the best kept secrets in the area.

As a Christian, non-profit ranch, we strive to help kids learn from horses all that they can teach in a family oriented, safe environment here in St Augustine. Our riding students come from as far as 60 miles away because of our programs. We also have more than a 70% return rate from our moms with a 35% plus referral rate. In short, we are time tested and mom approved!

We have recently added 2 riding instructors, both moms in their own rights, who now offer lessons during the day for home schoolers. Our summer camp program begins June 6th. We would appreciate any help you can provide by passing this on to other Home School families.

If I can answer any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask. If there is any other way we can be of service, please let us know. Thank you very much.

Lady Christendom (for young ladies) and West Point Christian Academy (for young men)

I am Lisa Hazelton, the current director of Hope Homeschoolers in Lakeland.  I just wanted to share something with you that I thought might be of interest to your group in the Gainesville area. They are programs called Lady Christendom (for young ladies) and West Point Christian Academy (for young men) run by William and Jill Roy (and their daughters) from North Carolina.  They are week-long "day camps" for students ages 8 -15.

West Point offers a comprehensive history curriculum from an unashamedly Christian Worldview, physical endurance tests, obstacle courses, marksmanship, strategy concepts, and Biblical character for young men.  These camps run from 10:00 a.m - 4:00 p.m. for the week, with a special program for families on Friday evening.

Lady Christendom offers lessons in civility and etiquette, Scripture memory, domestic cuisine skills, physical exercise, nutrition, and personal dress and modesty.  These camps run from 10:30 - 1:30 (or 3:30 with the optional extended program) for the week, with a special mother/daughter tea on Friday at lunch time.

Four of my children have participated in these camps for the past two years and have thoroughly enjoyed them!  They have learned many lessons from the Roys which they will carry with them for a lifetime.  The part I love the best is that the Roys are truly reinforcing the Christian values in which I am endeavoring to train my children, and they are such Godly role models for my children.  Their website is www.churstorian.com . If you have time, go there and go to the Character Camps section and check it out.  You will be able to see more details than I can give here.

We hope to offer these camps in Lakeland again next March, but the Roys would like to have several other camps in Florida around the same time if possible.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Roys directly at Churstorian@ntelos.net .  Also, please feel free to share this with any others you think might be interested.

Thanks for your time!
Lisa

Inspiring Children to Make Healthy Choices

Verna Groger, RD
Registered Dietitian and Certified Personal Trainer
www.JoyfullyFit.com ; verna@groger.net
Home: 352-374-7907  Cell: 352-514-1305

When children learn the importance of good nutrition and exercise, they often become very proactive in taking care of their health. I have weekly Healthy Family Parties designed to equip and inspire children to go against the unhealthy tide of our society and commit to good stewardship in the area of eating and physical activity. I can provide this in my home or anywhere you like.

These events follow the following format:
I talk a little about why we need antioxidants in our diet, what they are, where they are found, and how they protect the body from disease. I tell an interactive story.

The children go into an adjoining room and play Traffic Light Eating while the moms (dads welcome also) watch Dr. William Sears' 9 Simple Steps to a Healthier Family Diet DVD (12 minutes).

I share information about a form of concentrated fruits and vegetables available in a capsule, chewable, or gummie that Dr. Sears and many other widely known physicians recommend. There is no obligation to buy.

Parents frequently find their children very motivated by what they learn and empowered to lead the family in making healthy choices.  Oftentimes, when the lessons being taught at home are reinforced by a health professional, it increases the effectiveness.

The times I'm available to do this are:
All day Tuesday
Saturday afternoon and evenings
Monday evenings

Call or email if you're interested or have any questions. Refreshments will be served. If anyone would like to see the details of the story or the game, go to the Events page of my website where there are links to the PDF files. Health is a blessing that requires informed choices and self-control.

Piano Lessons (GNV and surrounding area)
Eric Redmond (352) 336-6294, www.redmondmusic.net , or redmond.music@gmail.com

I'm a homeschooling father of five and have been teaching piano professionally since 1992.  My goal has been to glorify God through excellent, encouraging teaching.  Curriculum includes some music theory (why we do what we do), ear training (helps to read music or play by ear), and songs that are a fun challenge to learn and enjoyable to hear.  I emphasize different parts of this curriculum depending on the specific needs and desires of my students and their families, so talk with me about your goals for music!  I am equipped to teach styles ranging from classical to the best of contemporary music (including reading chord symbols).  My special niche is teaching interested students how to arrange hymns and praise songs to use in worship.  Many people think you must be born with the ability to arrange music, but this is not true – it can be taught (and I really enjoy teaching it ).  I can teach you in my home studio (tuition is $60/month), but the more popular option with my students has been for me to teach in their homes (with a travel fee), freeing up their schedules.

I currently have a few openings at clients' homes (start times are approximate depending on travel time):
*Monday afternoon in the Keystone/Melrose area from 1pm - 3:30
*Thursday evening in West Gainesville from 6-7pm
*Friday afternoon in Ocala from 11:30am - 2:30 pm

Have you ever considered music lessons for yourself or someone in your family?  Do you not have time for music lessons "after school" because of other obligations? Would you like your child/children/yourself to take during the day?

If you have, why wait until tomorrow what you can do today?  I am currently scheduling lesson times (9am-6pm) for the fall and would love to teach your child/children, you, or all members of your family. Unlike most of the sites developed for our little girls, the Precious Girls Club site will be grounded in truths from the Bible and will be designed to help Christian girls grow in their faith.  The site will be filled with fun and exciting games, quests and virtual charms that can reward good behavior in the virtual world, as well as in the external world.   The site, www.preciousgirlsclub.com will launch at the beginning of September.

West Point Christian Academy (for young men) and Lady Christendom (for young ladies)

Lisa

 Your age in Chocolate

Don't tell me your age; you probably would tell a falsehood anyway

-but the Hershey Man will know! YOUR AGE BY CHOCOLATE MATH

 This is pretty neat.

DON'T CHEAT BY SCROLLING DOWN FIRST!

It takes less than a minute .

Work this out as you read .

Be sure you don't read the bottom until you've worked it out!

This is not one of those waste of time things, it's fun.

 1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like
to have chocolate (more than once but less than 10)

 2. Multiply this number by 2 (just to be bold)

 3. Add 5

 4. Multiply it by 50 -- I'll wait while you get the calculator

 5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1759 ..

 If you haven't, add 1758.

 6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.

You should have a three digit number

The first digit of this was your original number

(i.e., how many times you want to have chocolate each week).

 The next two numbers are

YOUR AGE! (Oh YES, it is!!!!!)

THIS IS THE ONLY YEAR (2009) IT WILL EVER WORK, SO SPREAD IT AROUND WHILE IT LASTS.

Christian-owned Horse Magazine

Hi there!
My name is Mandee Widrick and I am the editor of a Christian-owned horse magazine based out of NY. Being a homeschool graduate myself, I would like to introduce to you Bit & Bridle, as I believe it may be of interest to your homeschool group. This magazine is not only great for young horse owners, but it is also directed at those who aren't fortunate enough to have their own horse. We feature interviews with top horsemen such as Lew Sterrett and John Lyons, advice from certified veterinarians and other professionals, subscriber interaction and contests, fictional and true stories, and much more. We are also now accepting freelance submissions from young writers and photographers over the age of 16. The website is www.bitandbridlemag.com for anyone who would like more information. This magazine prints bi-monthly, and subscriptions are available for $15 (US funds) per year. (Sample issues are $3 each and available by request.)

Advertising space is also available for business owners, starting at only $30 per issue.

Sincerely,
Mandee Widrick

Website to Check Reading Level

www.arbookfind.com (click on “advanced search”)

This is a website designed for the Accelerated Reader program for public schools. The students read books and then take an online test for comprehension. They earn points if they pass the test and the school receives some kind of reward for the points the students earn. We don’t participate in the program, but I have found the website helpful for checking on the approximate reading level for books we read. You can query the database by title, author or reading level. The reading levels are by grade, by month. For example 3.4 would be third grade, fourth month. Of course the reading levels are somewhat subjective so I would only use it as a guide and not a diagnostic tool.

Time Out--To Fill YOUR Cup!
Parched? Dry? Weary in your well doing? You are not alone!  Studies overwhelmingly show that today’s Christian woman is busier than ever balancing more demands than ever before!  The typical Christian woman balances a wide variety of demands ranging from marriage to mothering to homemaking to homeschooling to home-business/career to ministry, in addition to somehow fitting in time to develop and deepen her relationship with the Lord ..

Above Rubies

Recipes for Health (on left-hand side) - Our Daily Bread

"Prior to the 1900;s most flour was milled locally and bread was baked at home. God designed the wheat kernel, as well as other grains, to perfectly store the nutrients within. Once broken open, as in milling, the nutrients immediately begin to oxidize. Within about 72 hours, 90 per cent of over 30 nutrients are virtually gone. Since the germ oil causes the flour to turn rancid very quickly, only enough grain was ground each day to meet the needs of the community. This meant that just about every family was gathering their manna daily."

MINISTRY SERVICE

MINISTRY OPPORTUNITY (OCL)
Sandy Beckwith Sandy@AmazingGrains.net

Our youth group from our church will be going on a missions outreach to Haiti this summer.  They are trying to raise money by having a huge yard sale.  If there are any items you would like to donate for the yard sale, we need to have these by Monday, June 6th.  Please contact Kim DeHart at (352) 624-8907.

Also, one of the ministries they will be helping out with while in Haiti is a wedding ministry.  These people are very poor and cannot afford the luxury of a wedding.  Some are also just wanting to make things right by getting married and making a commitment instead of just living together.  If anybody would like to donate their wedding dress (larger sizes preferred), suit or tuxedo, dress shoes and rings, contact Kim DeHart at (352) 624-8907.  We need to have any wedding donations by the first week of July.   When I got married, I was donated a beautiful dress so I know what a blessing this would be for those brides to have something beautiful to wear on their wedding day.

Food Ministry in Keystone Hts.
Shared by: Billy and Traci Thompson

Hi everyone!
http://www.angelfoodministries.com/menu_0906en.asp

This is a link to a food ministry that we have been using for about a year now… We have been very pleased with the quality of food that we have received. The main box is enough food for a family of 4 for one week. We always get 2 of those. Also the fruit and vege box is ALWAYS awesome. We get 2 of those as well. Watch for the chicken tender boxes. That is a 10 lb box of breaded tenders that are VERY YUMMY!!! Sometimes they offer a boneless/skinless box as well… very good.

Sometimes the meat boxes are not cost effective but many times they are… just do your math!

Hope this is a blessing to someone. Community Church in Keystone is participating for pickups this month. Hopefully they will become a constant pick up place. Let’s use them this month and let them know that there is a need in our community.

Deadline for ordering this month is June 14th. You may need to contact Community church to find out who is taking the money. I do not think that they are set up on line for ordering yet. You can also pick up in Palatka or Orange Heights… just specify where you are picking up when you place your order. Hope this helps!

Have a Blessed day in the Lord!
Traci

Housing?

Shared by: Jennie Hall

This note from a fellow Harding Graduate. I don't know them personally but I thought perhaps someone on the list could help them out. ~Jennie

Our 16 month old daughter, Hailey Trainer, has AT/RT, a highly aggressive and rare form of brain cancer. She has completed all 7 scheduled rounds of chemo, including 3 stem cell transplants and is now getting ready to head to Jacksonville, Fla. for proton beam radiation therapy for 6 weeks. We will be leaving within the next 30 days and are looking for at least a 3 bedroom condo of some sorts. We have a total of 4 children ages 6, 4, almost 3 and 16 month old Hailey.  We would love for them to have some semblance of a normal, enjoyable summer. Being cooped up in the Ronald McDonald house is not an option for us as we have such a large family. There will be 2 to 3 adults as well as the 4 children staying there. Insurance does not cover lodging so we are looking for help in any way. Please let us know if you have any information on a housing option.
Thank you,

During the summer we have 5 Day Clubs, a program taught by local teenagers and young adults for children. Every day for 5 days we come to your home, business, daycare, or anywhere possible and use games, memory verses, Bible lessons and missionary stories to teach children the Gospel message.

We are looking for:

* Any and all locations for clubs. We teach at Boys and Girls Clubs, daycares, churches, schools, backyards and driveways. 5 Day Clubs serve as a great follow up or leader to your churches Vacation Bible School. We will come anywhere there is children to hear.

* More Teenagers and Young Adults that have a heart for reaching children to help with the clubs, teach, help with the activities and children. While we already have some teenagers and young adults we could use more. We have openings June 29 – August 21. Any weekday for as many hours as possible. There is a training June 23 and 24.

* Adult drivers to help with the transportation to and from clubs.

For more about Child Evangelism Fellowship, please go to our website at www.cefonline.com .

If you are interested in helping in any capacity, please contact Katie Van Zant at (352) 378-0949 or at katiecef@gmail.com .

A Great Opportunity

Shared by: Barbar Fuller

Our son, George, has taken private drum lessons from Tobin Wagstaff at Studio Percussion (Gainesville’s only non-profit music studio) over the last four years.  This year, the Studio is having a fund raiser to provide scholarships for students who can’t afford music lessons:  piano, drums, percussion, guitar, bass and dance.  The owner of Studio Percussion, Tobin Wagstaff, has a vision to help under-privileged kids get off the streets and learn self-respect and responsibility through mastering an instrument.

If you would like to contribute to this great cause, and bless George by your participation,  please send a tax deductable donation to:

LEGISLATIVE/ POLITICAL

Meet-and-Greet (GNV)

Blessings,
Barbara Fuller
www.ltenews.com
bfuller@ltenews.com

A very important race in our county for House of Representative, District 22 – a district that consists of both Alachua and Marion Counties – has already begun.  This race is highly critical because Rep. Larry Cretul, the House Speaker, who currently holds the seat, is term-limited and with his absence a wide variety of unknowns can happen.  We need to make sure our next representative is someone who we can trust and someone who shares our same values…and we believe John Deakins is that candidate.

As home educators, it is encouraging to know that John Deakins is supportive of homeschoolers and shares the same beliefs of many Florida legislators such as former House of Representative Dennis Baxley, who has been one of the strongest champions of homeschooling next to Dan Webster in the Senate.

John is close friends with Dennis Baxley and as a fellow co-worker, Dennis endorses him.
Please see the invitation to a Meet-and-Greet we are hosting on June 19, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Also, to learn more about John Deakins, please visit his website: www.voteDeakins2010.com .

HEF Fundraiser

The FPEA has again offered HEF the opportunity to do a fundraiser at their Convention.  The purpose is to raise both money and awareness of HEF/Brenda's efforts in Tallahassee.  HEF will have a table near the Registration area for better exposure and easier access for those wishing to participate in the drawing.  Please stop by while you are at the Convention.

To make our fundraiser even more successful, HEF is soliciting donations of raffle items. In the past, donations came from individuals and businesses and included gorgeous handmade jewelry, gift baskets, a signed Jaguar football, support group memberships, beautiful quilts and other items.  To participate in the drawing you can purchase tickets for an opportunity to win one of the gifts donated. The more tickets you purchase, the higher your chances are of winning. Many participants place tickets on multiple items.

This year Tales of Waterville (www.talesofwaterville.com ) will be donating DVDs to the HEF raffle as well as selling their DVDs at our table.  A portion of the sales will go to HEF.

On the Home Education Foundation website (www.flhef.org ), you will find other affiliate programs which also donate money for purchases made through the HEF website.   Please encourage your members to purchase their home education materials through R.O.C.K. Solid and TALES OF WATERVILLE™ or flight and hotel reservations through HEF TRAVEL to help support our lobbying efforts inTallahassee.

For those of you who wish to donate for our Convention drawing, please send your items to:
The Ohly Family
5007 Lake Mabel Loop Road
Lake Wales, FL 33898

You may also bring your items to us at the Convention. Please drop off your items at the HEF table or at the FPEA registration desk by 6:00 p.m. Thursday.  Ask anyone at the FPEA registration desk to hold the item for HEF.  For any other questions, call Brenda at 850-264-2184.

We so appreciate your generosity and support of HEF.

HEF

Brenda Dickinson
President, The Home Education Foundation
www.flhef.org

HEF has been working hand-in-hand with officials from the NCAA to ensure a smooth eligibility process for students wishing to participate in competitive athletics through the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The following Q & A will be posted on the HEF website (http://www.flhef.org ).

Answers to NCAA Eligibility Questions

If a student athlete is talented enough to play at the college level, it is very important to become very familiar with the NCAA website at least when the student enters 8th grade, if not before.  The requirements are very strict and failing to meet those requirements could deny a star athlete eligibility to play college sports and receive a scholarship.  The NCAA Eligibility website is very helpful.  (www.ncaa.org ) Go to Academics & Athletes, then click on NCAA Eligibility Center.

Home educated students must meet the same academic requirements as other students, although the documentation is a little different.  The academic requirements and other information are on the NCAA website.  However, additional questions to those on the website come up from time to time for home education students.  Because home education students have so many choices and paths to achieve their educational goals, they don't always fit the mold for public or private school students. Therefore, the HEF has asked the following questions and answers which have been approved by the NCAA in order to provide parents more information.

1.  Can courses taken in the 8th grade count toward the NCAA required core courses?

Yes, if the course satisfies the core course requirement and is an approved high school course.  The course must be:
Algebra or above
Biology, physical science or above
English if it can be proved that the course is a college-prep course level

2.  Will the NCAA accept Credit by Exam?
No.

3.  How can home educated students document their coursework?

The NCAA will want to know the textbooks and publishers for each course taken.  They will accept Rosetta Stone for foreign language if done at home.  However, Florida colleges will not accept a foreign language taken at home.  It must be through a public or private school or through dual enrollment.

4.  Can a student have too many credits on the high school transcript?

There is no cap on the number of credits a student can earn.  The NCAA only considers the required core courses for determining eligibility and grade point average.  At this time, Division 1 requires 16 core courses and Division II requires 14, but on August 1, 2013, Division II will also begin requiring 16 core courses.  See the NCAA website for specific requirements.

5.  May college courses count as core courses? College courses may be used to satisfy core-curriculum requirements if the courses are accepted and are awarded credit by the high school (or in a home education program) for any student and meets all other requirements for core courses.

For NCAA Division I only, such courses must be placed on the student's high school transcript. Courses taken at a college will NOT appear on the high school's NCAA List of Approved Core Courses. The high school's NCAA List of Approved Core Courses will include only those courses taught/offered by the high school.

6.  How would a home education parent know if the college courses taken through dual enrollment satisfy the NCAA core-curriculum requirements?

Florida students who take dual enrollment courses can view the Dual Enrollment Course/High School Equivalency List on the FL Dept. of Education website at http://files.facts.usf.edu/AdvisingManuals/Dual_Enrollment_List_2008.pdf

This list equates the college course content to the content of high school courses.  The course codes for college courses and high school courses are specified on this list.  The Florida Department of Education Office of Articulation has examined the content of each course, as required by law, to establish this approved list.  It is used by public and private schools to determine if a dual enrollment course meets the high school graduation requirement.

7.  Can a high school student take too many college courses?

Not if the courses are taken concurrently in the high school or in a home education program.  A student can even earn an AA degree as long as the courses are taken part-time through dual enrollment.  The college eligibility clock starts running the moment a student is enrolled full-time in college.

Caution:  High school students need to know how the college is classifying them.  Early admission programs may classify the student as a full-time college student, even though the student has not completed home education. This would cause the college clock to start running and the student would loose a year of eligibility.

8.  How many years of college eligibility does a student who has completed an AA degree have?

Generally, if a student has never been classified as a full-time college, the student has 5 years in a Division I college and 10 semesters in Division II or III colleges to complete 4 seasons. However, to guarantee accurate information in each situation, student-athletes and/or their parents are urged to contact NCAA Membership Service at 317-917-6000, Monday-Friday, from Noon to 4:00 pm to obtain official information about individual eligibility.  NCAA will be glad to advise and answer specific questions.

The Fourth Amendment's Impact on Child Abuse Investigations

Michael P. Farris
President, Patrick Henry College
Chairman, Home School Legal Defense Association

The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit said it best, "The government's interest in the welfare of children embraces not only protecting children from physical abuse, but also protecting children's interest in the privacy and dignity of their homes and in the lawfully exercised authority of their parents." Calabretta v. Floyd, 189 F.3d 808 (1999).

This statement came in a case which held that social workers who, in pursuit of a child abuse investigation, invaded a family home without a warrant violate the Fourth Amendment rights of both children and parents. Upon remand for the damages phase of the trial, the social workers, the police officers, and the governments that employed them settled this civil rights case for $150,000.

The 4th Amendment Applies to Social Workers

Volume 44, Program 8
4/2/2003

Is it legal for social workers to come into your home without a search warrant? Today on Home School Heartbeat Mike Smith talks with HSLDA's litigation attorney Jim Mason about the 4th Amendment.

Mike:
Jim, it seems that social workers in the Stumbo case thought the constitution didn't apply to them. Does the 4th amendment apply to social workers? And if so why is it important that they recognize this?

Jim:
Mike, most emphatically the 4th amendment applies to social workers. The 4th amendment says that the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers and affects against unreasonable searches and seizures shall not be violated. The 4th amendment applies to all state actors. It doesn't say that it doesn't apply to social workers. When social workers come out to investigate an allegation of abuse or neglect, they are under the exact same requirements as police officers investigating crime. It's important that they understand that because when a social worker comes out to the house, they are intruding into one of the most important areas of our lives--our homes and our families. That's the very heart of what the 4th amendment was intended to protect. And social workers while they have an important role in finding child abuse and neglect cases, they can't run rough shod over the
rights of people.

Mike:
Well, Jim was you know HSLDA has committed a lot of time to making this a reality. That is that social workers have to realize that the 4th Amendment to the Constitution applies to them and other government workers. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.

Reading Horizons

Reading Horizons is a company that sells a scientifically-based intensive phonics reading system used successfully in schools for over 30 years. We are now making this program available for home use. We have non-consumable teaching materials and companion software for ages 4-10 and 10-adult that promise reading gains of 2-5 grade levels in about 40 hours of work.

Many parents and teachers don’t know how to teach reading/phonics in a systematic way to help those who don't easily read automatically. Each child is different and many don’t just “pick up” reading through exposure to the alphabet and literature. They require the right type of instruction delivered in an explicit, systematic way. I’d like to invite you to evaluate a vital tool for home school families, (whether you have struggling readers or not), because you desire to provide the most solid educational foundation you can. We offer an online version of our training for parents at no charge. Please visit this link to have a look at the Online Workshop and a myriad of other free resources, including assessments and games, we have developed for your use: www.readinghorizonsathome.com/resources.aspx

Our decoding strategies pave the way for reading any length word accurately and fluently. If you are interested in a LIVE demonstration for your group via the internet where we can discuss our strategies and answer any questions, we would be happy to set something up, (again free of charge). Just give us a call at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.

Looking for A Christian Alternative to the Harry Potter Series

Hello,

I’m D.W.Murray, Disney animation artist and the author of the Majesty book series. The idea for the books came about as a series of bedtime stories for my kids when they became curious about magic due to the Harry Potter craze. As a Christian dad and a story artist, I decided to tell them a story about magic from a Biblical perspective. I've received rave reviews of the books, from children and their parents, grandparents, and teachers. Now I’d love to share this story with you as well.

For more information about the Majesty Series  and to view my Disney artwork visit, www.dwmurraybooks.com

Read The 700 Club article on D.W. Murray article www.cbn.com/700club/guests/bios/DWMurray062706.aspx

Angie Booth Memorial Library (GNV)

Juli Stewart mandjstewart@cox.net

This curriculum library is housed at Pinegrove Baptist Church along with Lena Bush's library.  The hours are the same as her library and just kindly ask about being able to go in a browse around.  It has been straightened up lately, although it still needs some work, I believe one can find something in there better now!  :-)  Please put your name on the sign out sheet along with the books you borrowed.  And when you return the books, please put a line through your name.  You may check items out as long as you need.

I went through the list and I am not sure how old this list is but I wrote down the name and if you have materials checked out, please, whenever you return them, just scratch your name out.

Thanks so much!

~Juli

Former Homeschooler Publishes First Book

As a former homeschool and long-time reader of Titus 2, I wanted to share exciting news with you! My first middle-grade novel, Take the Reins (Canterwood Crest #1) is out now from Simon & Schuster. It's a "clean tween" book that follows twelve-year old small town girl Sasha Silver to a prestigous boarding school where she competes with the equestrian elite. Take the Reins is the first of eight books in a series that's tagged as a modern twist on The Saddle Club.

Homeschooling opened so many doors for me. I was able to start college at sixteen, graduate at twenty and have the drive to pursue my goals. I'm now twenty-one and a full-time author. I hope other homeschoolers are able to be inspired by my story. I'm incredibly grateful to the always supportive homeschooling community.

Best wishes,
Jessica Burkhart

Nature Friend Magazine

A few years ago, we began looking for a science magazine for our boys but were disappointed at having to continually deal with evolution and world view information.  We came upon a creation-based magazine called "Nature Friend" and have enjoyed our subscription thoroughly.  The boys really look forward to receiving it each month.  It is full of interesting photographs, articles, puzzles, etc.  You can learn more about it at the following link:

Museum Pass

Juli, Our family pays only $30 per year for a family membership with the Charlotte County Museum each year.  We used to pay $100 for the same pass from the Orlando Science Museum.  That pass gets us in for free to any one of a hundred or more science museums around the nation, including the ones in Tampa, Ocala and Jacksonville.  We’ve even used it to get into the Omaha Children’s museum for free.  Folks can get more info from museum@sunline.net .
