PRAYER & PRAISE

"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you" (Matthew 6:33).

Praises:
1.  We praise the Lord that churches are catching the vision to teach Bible Clubs in the public schools.  One pastor spoke with me yesterday about his church's desire to adopt a Good News Club at Idylwild Elementary beginning in the fall.
2.  We praise the Lord for the pastors that are willing to lead by example.  I participated in a Teacher Children Effectively course last week where two senior pastors were among the students being trained.
3.  We praise the Lord for an invitation to teach a Super Seminar on January 30th specifically for the church's Sunday School teachers.

Prayers:
1.  We ask for your continued prayers for Evelyn Severino.  Maxine visited her yesterday and she was having a rough day.  She is still at North Florida Rehab but was looking forward to other arrangements.
2.  We ask for you to lift us up personally.  We have experienced some challenges and spiritual assaults.
3.  We ask for your prayers that we would be focused and become more effective at promoting the ministry.  We want to do a better job enlisting ministry partners and training dedicated volunteers.

We appreciate your interest in spiritual things and your willingness to pray for CEF.  Since we are seeking the Lord He promises to provide what we need.  May God open our eyes to the many ways He is blessing us..

Praise: Home at last!
Hello everyone,
First and foremost, I must thank God for pulling me through this life changing ordeal. I have never been this sick before in my life. I am so greatful for all the family and friends that have helped during this long and trying time. I came close to death on many occasions but God was not ready for me yet.

I wanted to say thanks to everyone who visited, although I was in a coma, people sat for hours at a time just to be with me. I wanted to say thanks to those who watched my home, who took care of my bills and who took care of my dogs and my mom while I was so sick. As many of you know, I lost my mom on Oct 14th and I was in a coma and did not find out until the end of November about her passing. It was when I was out of a coma and able to handle the emotional news that my brother told me about my mom's passing. My brother David has been such a wonderful advocate and brother during my sickness. He made some very tough decisions (life and death decisions) during this time and I want everyone to know what a great brother he always has been. I also want to thank my cousin Debbie and Aunt Patty for their assistance and help in my recovery at home. I want to thank all those who prayed and visited that are way too many to list by name but you know and God knows who you all are and HE is always faithful. Thanks for all the gifts, books, Christmas carols in the hospital and everything else in between. I still have quite a bit of recovery to do in the next couple of months. I am walking with a walker and my lungs are getting stronger every day. I have a bed sore that was pretty severe that is still healing but in time I trust I will be back to normal. I have lost 50 lbs since this ordeal and you may not recognize the new me! I AM BACK! I will update again in a short while. I am tired and my bed sore is hurting so I will close for now and keep me in your prayers. Also my best friend Viola was diagnosed with breast cancer the weekend before my hospital stay and she is going through Chemotherapy currently please keep her in your prayers as she deals with this illness and she has 3 children and a husband. Thanks to everyone who checked on these care pages and I will get to read them over the next few weeks. I love all of you and thanks again!

MEDICAL STATUS INFO FROM YESTERDAY...

We finally got to meet with Dr. Morse to discuss our baby girl when we were at Shands yesterday afternoon. Kara, evidently, has a very difficult airway. Her lungs are functioning fine, but her airway is so small. If they remove the vent, it will collapse. I believe this has to do with her anatomical structure and it's part of her "mid-line" defect which is related to HPE. In order to get her home we would need to do a tracheostomy. I was thinking we would need to do this... What they are trying to determine is what the risk of doing this procedure is with little Miss Kara. Because her anatomy is so difficult the risk may be too great. We don't want our little girl to pass away in the OR...
**Our prayer is that the risk is minimal and that she would be able to have a trach.

She was still hooked up to the eeg study when we arrived. They upped her phenobarbital to a higher dose for "maintenance" so that she would not have seizures. Some of them are sub-clinical meaning you can't see them, but they show up on the monitors. We don't want her to be overmedicated and Dr. Morse agrees. The Neuro Doc wants the seizures ALL gone, so I think Dr. Morse took the middle road on her dosing and they were watching overnight to see how new dose worked. I am hoping when we return this morning that the eeg machine is gone. Suzanne said she needs a bath. I would love to see that!

Another condition they found on Kara yesterday is a problem with her heart. It's called Tetrology of the heart which is a narrowing of one of the artieries (?). She has what is called Pink Tet. Dr. Morse said it is not a problem right now. Normally, a baby would have surgery at around 6 months to correct the condition. If she is still with us in one month, the cardiac team wants to see her and re-evaluate this condition. So currently this area is not an immediate concern.

Dr. Morse says she is stable. The MRI shows very underdeveloped eyes (optic atrophy). She has not opened them, but she cannot see with them based on the MRI. (I do have a friend whose daughter has the same thing and opened her eyes at 4 weeks old...)

Right now we just want to spend time with our precious daughter. We don't know what her future holds. We are trusting in God and thanking Him for the miracle of her life. I treasure every moment I have with her. Stuart has been going up in the late evenings and reading books to her and praying over her. Our immediate needs are people to come care for our children so that we can be in the NICU. Yesterday when I went it had been 24 hours since I had seen her. Right now I would like to go twice a day if I can physically handle it. Jamie is probably going to be watching the children in the evening hours when we go. I just don't want to overburden him. The 5 youngest seem to listen best to an adult, not their own sibling.

Thank you for ALL of your prayers! We covet each and every one! We know that God can move in Kara's body (and he already has) and make things possible. I am trusting in His plan for her and just offering my praise and thanksgiving for Kara Faith's life so far.

Praise & Prayers: Kara's Here!

Well, Kara had other plans... After dealing with contractions and discomfort all night long, we brought Nancy to Shands to see if they could possibly adminster IV meds that might stop the contractions. Guess what, she was already at 6cm and dilating!

Kara Faith was born via C-Section at 6:42 am and she weighed 5 lbs. 1...4 oz.

APGAR scores were unmentionable and low and Kara was intubated rather quickly and taken to the NICU. She's doing better now and is breathing on about 30% oxygen. (You and I breathe about 21%)

We're finally about to take Nancy down to meet baby Kara after about eight hours in recovery! Stay tuned for photos!

Prayer Update: on Lisa Satcher

A walking Christmas miracle
What a glorious day for Lisa today – she called me this afternoon to tell me she had walked 48 feet. She was using a walker and went 24’ rested then went back 24’ – I about fell over with Joy and emotion. I could not have been prouder or happier for her! It is mind boggling to think that just last week she was put back on ventilator and today she accomplished the biggest feat since her sickness started. I know Lisa gives all the glory to God as we all should.

She wanted me to tell everyone that she is eating somewhat solid food (pudding, frosty’s and other soft foods) and also that she is back on the oxygen tubes. No more ventilator!!! She sends her love and thanks to everyone. She had a group from the church in her room when she called me to ask about posting some pictures - so stay tuned I will put up as soon as I get them. They sounded like they were having a ball.
I have to agree with my cousin Debbie; God has sent us a Christmas miracle! God bless everyone!

Our friend, Ken, had knee surgery last week.  He sent an update.

~Mike and Juli Stewart mandjstewart@cox.net

I had a huge setback today. Swelling in the knee has increased - the area around the sutures are red - and I've been unable to moderate the pain today.  I'll see the doctor tomorrow near noon.  I've been unable to do much - until now, I had been improving and was feeling pretty good with a gameplan in my head. Now, I just hurt.  Keep me in your prayers.

Greetings all!

We have had an interesting few days with contractions and follow up visits which you can read about at

Kara's Blog: www.sweetkarafaith.blogspot.com

Our experience reinforces my thought that despite the provision of the Lord in sending people into our lives who are kind and compassionate, the enemy will still send doubt and fear to challenge your faith and your resolve. Please pray for Nancy and Kara as they need to hang on for at least three more weeks before we greet our baby girl...

Today, I am writing to ask each of you to help with two things:

The organization website is up and running although it still needs a few finishing touches. Please forward our link to as many people as you can.

www.karasHoPE.org

Please forward this to everyone in your facebook and your personal e-mail address books with two requests or calls to action.

First: Please enter our fundraising raffle if the recipient is willing and able. If there is a reason why someone would want to donate, but not participate in the fundraising raffle, they can still donate through the website, but by including a note on their donation, they can opt-out of the raffle activities.

Second: Please ask them to forward this link to as many people in their personal address book as possible, asking those recipients to do the same.

I would sincerely appreciate it if you would do these two things. We are especially interested in reaching "High-Risk" Obstetricians nationwide as they are the ones who will usually be dealing with patients with Holoprosencephaly. We need to let them know that were are attempting to be a resource to their moms & babies and that they can refer people to us.

Our goal is for this first raffle to be successful and to make connections with others which will allow us to bless them in a manner similar to the way we have been blessed by others. Nancy tells me a new story each week of another HPE family who can't make appointments due to unpaid insurance deductibles, or families struggling with travel expenses. The list goes on and it's those un-met needs that we hope to help with.

If each of our group members forwarded this link to one hundred others, we could reach 10,000 individuals by the end of the day. Help us to have a positive impact on the lives of moms and babies working through this journey with HPE.

With Sincere Thanks,

Stuart Palmer njvwinkle@aol.com

Praise and Prayer: Valerie Grace

As usual, Valerie Grace had a great time at St Jude. We flew in on Thursday and my dad was there to meet us at the airport in Memphis (he flew in from Charlotte using his frequent flier miles). We took the shuttle to the short term housing at St Jude. Friday morning my dad drove us to an outside clinic appointment with Dr Pivnik to talk about the possibility of there being a genetic link to Valerie's tumor. Valerie's tumor type is almost always diagnosed in very young children. I commented on how many of the children with this type of tumor have a similar look to me. The doctor is interested in looking at the possibility of a genetic cause. They did lots of measurements on Valerie (especially on her face). She then pointed out the shortened last nuckle on Valerie's fingers...but took a look at my dad's hands and saw where that came from :) She ordered some blood work, an echo cardiogram and a renal ultrasound (all of which we had done during our stay in Memphis). The rest of the weekend was filled with eating at the cafeteria, visiting with Craig's two grandmothers (both over 90 years old and doing well). I could have visited them for days - what a treasure to be able to hear Dorothy's stories. Her brother was paralized in an accident when she was little. She told me how her parents were told that there was a great facility that could take him. Her father said no, that he was their son and would stay with them. It was such an encouragement to hear her words to me - she said so many nice things, it was like a big hug from the Lord.

We also visited the children's museum in Memphis and the zoo (which was not very enjoyable for anyone because it was so cold).

Monday morning, Valerie had her eye appointment (they thought her vision looked stable), her hearing (which was great), and her occupational therapy appointment (they said she is right on track for where she should be now). Between appointments, St Jude had a winter wonderland party. Valerie enjoyed making necklaces and snowflakes. We were able to eat lunch with one of Valerie's favorite nurses.

I tried keeping Valerie up late Monday night because she wouldn't be able to eat Tuesday before the MRI. She went to sleep around 8pm. I spent most of the night up talking to God - I tend to second guess things a lot and with the last MRI, I was really second guessing whether or not doing the radiation was the right thing (I have been second guessing it since before we started). When we asked to do a chemo combo a year ago, a doctor from another hospital laughed at the fact that we would choose that chemo. Thankfully, we have a wonderful doctor at Shands who has been open to newer things. We did that chemo 2 months and then switched to the radiation. Now, that chemo is being recommended by several hospitals for tumors like Valerie's. So, I kept second guessing the radiation and was thinking that maybe we should have moved back to the US and stayed on that chemo longer. As I cried out to God that night, this huge peace filled me - He brought me to a place of no regrets, of trust in Him (not for good results, but just trust in who He is and that He loves us). He brought me to a place of total trust in Craig as well as the spiritual leader, provider and protector of our family. I spent time on my knees with my hands on Valerie, praying for her. It is so freeing to know 100% that it is out of our hands and that I can fully trust the Lord to lead us.

Valerie Grace woke up around 2am - she asked for food knowing it would be her last chance to eat until after the scan. Around 7am, we took the shuttle to the hospital (since it was raining). Valerie was scheduled to have an IV put in and labs drawn. I asked that the nurse who successfully put in the IV last time to come and do it this time as well. Within minutes she was down and Valerie Grace was screaming. It was difficult to see her so upset, but the one time she stopped crying was when the put in the IV - the band they put around her arm and the stuff they wrap it up in to keep her from pulling it out were the worst parts for her (she does not like gooey or sticky things). We then went down to radiation oncology for her follow up appointment. She was quite upset until she saw the doctor. She looked at him and said "we have been looking all over for you". Next we went to get the echo cardiogram (more sticky and gooey stuff), but she did well after a few minutes. She then went back for her scan and was able to see one of her "boys". She fell asleep waiting for the scan, but then she woke up when we carried her into the MRI room. I held her as she went to sleep and then left the room. I went to the cafeteria to load up on grapes and snacks to have for when she woke up. Around 4pm she woke up to familiar faces (the recovery nurses she knows well). We then went down to see Dr Kun to find out how the scan looked. So there I am, all ready, all prepared to hear bad news - and yet we are told that the tumor shunk about 1/2 a centemeter in each direction. Normally I have questions to ask and want to see the scan - but I was feeling so blessed to hear positive news that I didn't remember to ask any of my questions. Dr Kun added that he felt that we would be fine to go back to Ecuador late February. Valerie will go in for another scan the week of February 8th. The MRI report stated that the most of the cysts are the same size and one is slightly smaller. There are still some blood areas in the cysts. The report shows the tumor was 5cm x 4cm x 4.3 cm in September. It is now 4.5cm x 3.5cm x 4.2cm. The doctor sounded encouraged and surprised at how quickly Valerie's results improved after the scan late September. Valerie had her tumor shrink some the summer of 2006 and she gained some weight. She put on 4lbs in the past 3 months, which may be explained by the tumor shrinking again.

We were very excited about receiving a good report, and honestly, I was really thankful that the Lord was able to show me what He did before we got the good results. Our night wasn't over though (despite how tired I was after being up with Valerie for her 2am snacking). Valerie started complaining about her eye once we got back to our room. She couldn't open it and when I looked at it, it was very red. We called the hospital and they told us to come in to have her seen. They put us in a room and let us know that it might be a while because of an emergency in the other room. People kept appologizing to us for the wait and I kept thinking how thankful I was that they were giving full attention the child next door who was not doing well. Holding Valerie on the bed, I prayed for the family in the room beside us. Valerie fell asleep in my arms. The child beside us was transfered to the ICU. They let us know they were planning to give Valerie morphine, but I told them about her reaction to morphine. We gave her motrin instead and they told me that they wanted to put drops in her eyes and put dye in to look for scratches of foreign objects. I remember having that done several times and warned them that she would most likely freak out (she despises eye drops). The doctor was a "boy" and I think that helped a lot. She laid so still and he did not touch her at all, he dripped saline from a syringe over her let it drip over the dye strip (that they normally put right on your eye) and then that dripped into the corner of her eye and he told her to blink and in went the dye. Many doctors hold the child down and pull their eye lids open. This doctor was amazingly gentle and it paid off big time. Valerie then opened her eye and let him look in. Everything looked fine and her eye started to feel better (I am thinking maybe all the drops flushed something out). We went back to the room and ordered a pizza and went to bed.

Wednesday, we met with endocrinology. Her thyroid levels and cortisol were lower than before, but still in the normal range. We then went for her renal ultrasound (more sticky gooey stuff). We then had time to go back to the room and pack up before our shuttle came. We had a smooth flight back and Craig and the girls met us in Orlando.
Thank you for praying for us and for Valerie. Thank you to the children in Valerie's kindergarten class in Ecuador who prayed for her and mailed her such beautiful cards - and thank you to Beth, her teacher, for sharing with the class about how Valerie is doing. There is something so special about children praying for children.

Valerie Grace is already looking forward to her next visit at St Jude. They do a great job of making it fun for children (seeing that Valerie went all day without food, and didn't once complain is a testimony to the fact). We saw many familiar faces, families getting ready to go home after successful treatment, cancer free. We saw families back for check ups. At the same time, it was difficult to know that we would not be seeing some faces of children that we have been praying for (3 that went through radiation with Valerie Grace). It is a reminder to hug our children, and appreciate them each day they are here. Time is precious and we can't do over today. Children are a gift from the Lord - take time today to let each of your children know how special they are to you and to God.

Love,
Celeste

In Memoriam: Chris Klicka

4-2-1961 TO 10-12-2009

A longtime champion of homeschooling rights around the globe, Home School Legal Defense Association Senior Counsel and Director of State and International Relations Christopher J. Klicka was called home by his Lord on October 12, 2009, at age 48, following a 15-year battle with multiple sclerosis. An attorney, spokesman, lobbyist, and homeschooling husband and father, Chris is survived by his wife, Tracy, their seven children (ages 11–21), and his parents, Ardath and George Klicka.

“Chris was both a people person and a goal person. He cared deeply about people, but was also driven to always do more!” says HSLDA President J. Michael Smith. “He was the most determined person I ever met in my life. Even with all the things he accomplished every day at HSLDA, he continually wanted to tackle new challenges and serve homeschoolers in more and better ways. He was so focused on the homeschooling world, but he was also very much focused on his family and dedicated to raising his children.”

An integral part of Home School Legal Defense Association’s staff for 24 years, Chris was HSLDA’s first full-time employee, first executive director, and first full-time attorney. He believed passionately that homeschooling was the best educational method for children and demonstrated that passion in every area of his life.

Chris and Tracy homeschooled all seven of their children. He traveled across the United States (and around the world) defending families’ right to homeschool and advocating homeschooling. He participated in countless radio interviews on homeschooling issues. He wrote five books on homeschooling, penned numerous articles, and had two more books in progress when he passed away. He lobbied state legislators, U.S. senators, and foreign diplomats to support homeschooling. He sought greater freedom for homeschooling parents and students in every area—from local school districts to sports associations, college admissions departments, and military recruitment requirements. He sought to educate the educators, truant officers, policemen, judges, and even social workers about the benefits and legality of homeschooling.

Even deeper than his passion for homeschooling was his deep love for his Lord. We may never know how many people Chris inspired to homeschool or continue homeschooling, or how many people he inspired to draw near to his Lord.

“Chris’s accomplishments as a lawyer for homeschooling are clear and of value that cannot be overstated. He was one of the most important pioneers of our movement,” says HSLDA Chairman Mike Farris. “He believed that this truly is God’s way to teach children to love God. He believed it deeply. His conviction was infectious. He was a man of single-hearted devotion that I have never, ever seen equaled. The passion that Chris felt for the mission to which God called him never, ever, ever, ever dimmed, even slightly.”

HSLDA deeply appreciates and honors Chris’s life and his dedicated contribution to our organization and to homeschooling. Our staff will miss him more than we can express, and we are praying with and for his family. The homeschooling movement has lost one of its greatest advocates and friends, but Chris leaves an incredible legacy of freedom and awareness of homeschooling to the thousands of homeschooled students whose parents have made The Right Choice.

”I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day-and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.“ II Timothy 4:7-8

”Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life.“ Revelation 2:10

MEETINGS

Heartstrings and Bright Lights (LC)
Stephanie Johns 386-755-5520 or tsjohns@comcast.net

Heartstrings is a meeting to encourage homeschool moms.
We meet the last Tuesday (Except Nov. & Dec.) of each month from 7:00-9:00 at the home of Sherry Miller in Lake City.
For directions, call 386 755-5520 or email tsjohns@comcast.net

This is our TENTH year meeting together!! WOW!! God has so blessed our time together over the years. Thank you to all of you

who have participated. Come and celebrate this anniversary with us on January 26th from 7:00-9:00.

We will be sharing testimonies of what God is doing in our families.
This group shares a common thread that we all desire to be the wife and mom God wants us to be.
We realize that it is God who is working in us and He alone can transform us and in so doing will also tranform our homes and families into what He desires them to be.

We gain much by coming together and encouraging one another as we walk along this path together.
Bring a friend and a snack to share.

Bright Lights meets at the same time and is for girls ages 10 and up. Please bring your Bible and book.  We will place a book order after the first meeting. We will have two classes this year.

Bright Lights is a discipleship program by Sarah Malley.
The purpose is...
1.To encourage the pursuit of godliness
2.To provide positive peer influence and accountability
3.To have a group which can be a team to minister to others

What is a “bright light”? It is a girl who knows how to respond just right to people and circumstances. It is a girl who has Biblical convictions and commitments, and is able to go through her teenage years strong for the Lord without stumbling as many do. It is a girl who touches the lives of others by her servant’s spirit and the message of eternal life through Jesus Christ. God wants bright lights! There is a great need for more of them in this generation of darkness.

We talk about many topics that women face such as finding time for prayer, strengthening marriage, becoming a better parent by understanding ourselves and our children better, handling adversity, difficult relationships, and learning ways to develop Christian character in our lives so we can be a better example to those around us.

"Passion for Jesus" (Inverness)

I wanted to let you know about a wonderful conference in January for girls/women. A group of young women (mostly in their 20's) who have all been homeschooled are reaching out to other girls through a conference called, "Passion for Jesus."

http://apassionforjesus.com/new_date

It is about all the things young women consider as they prepare for their future. They use drama, song, stories and many rich, fresh testimonies in which they fly in the speakers from all over the US to come in and speak to get their point across. The ages for the event are12 years old ~ through their mother's age. We are suggesting mother's or grandmothers attend with their daughters/granddaughters as an opportunity to be on the same page with the teaching. It is also a great opportunity as a girls outing and bring friends or youth groups of young women.

The web site is info@apassionforjesus.com an informational phone # : 813.453.8200.  We attended this conference last year in
Tampa, they had over 250 in attendance and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has a daughter. Posters and registration are online. The date is Saturday, January 30th, 2010 at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Inverness, FL

Joy Fellowship Group (ALA & High Springs)
Joy: Jesus, Others, You!
Dates:  First and Third Fridays of the month from 1-3
Locations:  Call or email for info.
Lori LaBelle waitingonjc@windstream.net or 386-454-8634

Do you and your kids need some fellowship and fun in your homeschool schedule?  If so, we would like to invite you to attend the Joy Fellowship Group, meeting the first and third Fridays of the month, from 1:00 till 3:00.

We will meet at rotating places in the High Springs/Alachua area.  The main purpose of this group is fellowship!  We want to keep Christ the center of what we do, so this homeschool fellowship group is decidedly Christian (though we may have different churches!).  If you would like to have some fun seasonal parties, (Thanksgiving, Christmas), maybe field trips and also some fun “light” studies on chosen particular subjects, science, history or ??, let’s work together and have some fun with our children.

Mom's, we will have a coffee/tea time during fellowship/planning.   Ages: wide open here, I personally have a high school teenager (she will probably bring schoolwork), a 9 year old son and 2 year old daughter, so all ages are welcome, but we will probably have activities focused on the elementary ages. If you have older ones like me, they can use this time for a study group.  Mom’s if you have a great homeschool curriculum book that you have found, want to tell about or do an activity from, bring that too, so we can learn from each other.

4-H SWAT Club Gilchrist County

There is a new 4-H project club starting in Gilchrist County focusing on Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT).  Any Gilchrist youth from grades 6-12 is welcome to attend the meetings and participate.  We will be completing a health related project, participating in state and national tobacco awareness observances in our county such as Kick Butts Day, and doing community service along with our 4-H activities.

We have a great group of 4-Hers ready to start our club and we would like to invite more concerned youth to join us.  All of the middle/high schools in the county have SWAT clubs, and this would be a great opportunity for anyone not involved in those clubs to participate in SWAT through 4-H.

Our first meeting will be held at the Gilchrist Library in Trenton on Monday, Nov. 9th at 6:30 PM.

For more information, please call Tracy DeCubellis, Tobacco Prevention Specialist (and homeschooler) at 352-538-5992 or email at tracyd@quitdoc.com .

American Sign Language - ASL (GNV)
Ann LeZotte

Class for students who already have a basic knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) will be on Monday's from 10:30-11:30 in the Storyhhour Room at the downtown Gainesville library.

Class for ASL beginners will be on Mondays from 10:30-11:30 in the Storyhour Room at the downtown Gainesville library. Next Wednesday, July 29, will be my first class for beginners. The classes will run as long as I have interested students! It’s okay if families have to miss class sometimes, as I have many review sessions.

I have just moved to the Gainesville Library. I previously worked at the Newberry Branch. I very much enjoyed teaching my ASL classes there. I find homeschool children to be very engaging students.

Art Workshop Classes
Teri Davis 352-846-6006 or
teridavi@ufl.edu
Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, and Hand Quilting

Classes are 4 sessions each, completed in 4 weeks. Each session lasts 1 hour.
Classes will be held at UF's Corry Village Commons Room. Time and days to be arranged. Price includes instruction, clay, materials,
fabric and firings.

$65.00 per child per course (4 session classes).

* Students will learn about clay and how to construct objects, prepare them for firing, and color treatments. A great program for
those interested in creative ceramics and who want the practical knowledge of working in clay.

* Improve your child's painting and drawing skills through a range of fun and stimulating exercises. Using their own unique vision,
they interpret the world around them creating artwork to treasure for years to come. A great way to learn painting and drawing skills and develop artistic ability.

* Students will learn the basics of hand quilting the way our grandmothers and great grandmothers did. Working with needle, fabric, and design, students will practice developing dexterity and experience the art of creative design. The finished product will be a small quilt, hot pad, or quilt art.

Teri has two masters degrees in Interdisciplinary Humanites and Art Education. She is an Art Educator at UF's Reitz Union Arts and Leisure Courses. Teri taught and interned at Wiles Elementary and A. Quinn Jones. Previously she taught Ceramics for 2 years at the University of West Florida. Presently she is a Substitute Teacher at Westwood Middle School and is JJ Finley Morning Fitness Coordinator. She has done numerous workshops with ages young and old, and has worked with special populations.

Artist Hub of Ocala

Dear Parents,
There are registration deadlines at Palomina Play.
This is a wonderful facility that is geared for children 20 months to school age.  Child proof! and lots of fun! I have been holding classes at Brick City for 3-5 year olds but Brick City is a gallery and I will keep my school age and teen/adult classes there.  I receive so many calls to have classes for the young ones and now lets show some support and register yourself and your child. Lets show our support and go to Palomino Play where children can have fun and learn in the same environment. New web site: www.artisthubofocala.com

Lab Science Camps
Jack and Sue Dunn info@genesisranch.org
www.GenesisRanch.org

Hi Florida Homeschooler!
My husband, Jack, and I came across your website in Homeschool World.  We have just started a new ministry to homeschoolers and would like to introduce ourselves to you and the families in Florida

After homeschooling our 3 daughters through high school, Jack and I discovered, first hand, the difficulties and expense of doing upper level science labs at home.  We know that other families are facing the same struggles.

We provide 3 week long Lab-Adventures in Physics, Biology, and Chemistry to Christian homeschool students nation-wide.  Each Creation based science camp, in our rural Montana home, provides approximately 34 formal lab sessions equivalent to the lab work in an average year of public school science.  We have scheduled a different lab for each month of the year starting with Physics for boys in August.  Boys and girls will come at different times.  Jack is the main teacher.  He has been a registered nurse for 20 years and has taught high school science, math, and history.  He has also taught college courses in organic chemistry and anatomy and physiology, and algebra.

Jack and I would like to enlist your help in getting the word out about our ministry.
Please peruse our website: www.GenesisRanch.org to get know us and see if this is something you could recommend to families in your area.

Thank you very much for taking the time to see what we are all about.  Let me know if you have any questions about us, and feel free to give out our email address to interested families.

Thanks again and may God bless you and your family.
Sincerely,
Susanne Dunn

Cooking Classes for Children

I am a mom and a teacher who started a business back in April called, Wee Can Cook!  I offer cooking classes for children, ages 2 1/2-8.  These classes are parent participation classes in which the children are the "Head Chefs" and parents are the "Sous Chefs."  I have a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Florida, taught for 5 years and then have been home with my own girls for 5 years.  I started this business because my older daughter had a huge interest in cooking and I could not find anything appropriate for her age in Gainesville.  All my classes are hands-on, developmentally appropriate and integrate math, science, literacy, music, health and nutrition and kitchen safety.  I offer morning and evening classes.  I would love for you to visit my website and perhaps pass my information on to other homeschool families you think may be interested.

Thank you,
Shari

Greetings,
My name is Daniel Cook and I am a cadet leader in the local Civil Air Patrol squadron. If you’re unfamiliar with us, we are, first and foremost, a community service volunteer organization. In addition, we provide young people aged 12-21 with opportunities for leadership training, aviation/aerospace education, character development and much more. We wanted to reach out to the local homeschool community to ensure that everyone is aware of the wonderful opportunities available to young people in our organization.

Our local squadron will be accepting new applicants in April. In fact, we are holding an open house the second Thursday in April. I wanted to contact you to ask if you can pass along the information to your group.

Our open house will be held on Thursday, April 9th at 7:00 PM at Southwest United Methodist Church in Gainesville. A map can be found on our website at www.gainesvillecap.org . Please pass along my contact information to any interested families.

Exchange Students:

HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT?

Dawn Brown mdawnsc@aol.com or 352-316-2201

I know many of you hosted short-term students last year and had a wonderful experience.  I am a community coordinator for a program that hosts students for a 5-month or 10-month stay while they attend your local high school.  I am trying to find host families for students who hail from Norway, Hong Kong, Korea, Spain, Germany (wouldn't it be great to turn a future leader from this country into a home school advocate), Belgium, Thailand, Italy, Turkey, Switzerland, China, the Netherlands, and Slovakia.

Host families provide a bed, a place to do quiet studying, and the love and support any teenager would need. PAX exchange students have had a minimum of 3 years of English. They have their own insurance and spending money. Families can expect students to help with household chores and participate in family activities.

If you are interested in more information about hosting a student or would like to see profiles of students needing a host family please contact me.

Gideon Media Arts Conference and Film Festival Intern Program

Hello.

I’m Vonda Skelton. Sarah Sumpolec and I are co-directors of the Gideon Media Arts Conference and Film Festival Intern Program for teens 16-18.

The theme of this conference is “Where Art and Purpose Meet,” and its goal is to teach and encourage media professionals to create works with a Christian worldview. Media Arts, you ask? Well, we're talking about things like writing, screenwriting, acting, directing, radio, TV, church drama, and producing. The Gideon Intern Program is a special part of the overall conference, designed exclusively for teens between the ages of 16 and 18 who are ready to take their love of the media arts to the next level.

Participants not only learn from professional producers, directors, actors, writers, and others experts in the industry, but they also make connections within the network of these working professionals.

You can read about the conference here: http://gideonfilmfestival.com/Home/?load=1

The specifics of the Intern Program are here: http://gideonfilmfestival.com/Home/?load=1

And this year’s program includes a screenwriting competition for interns only! You can find it here: http://gideonfilmfestival.com/Contests/index.cfm  (scroll down to the high school competition) DEADLINE quickly approaching!

The Gideon Conference was begun in 2008 and we’ve been honored to lead 15 teens through the Intern Program so far. We would love to have your students participate in 2010! We began accepting applications October 15 and will continue accepting them until February 15, 2010.

Fundred Project:

Be a part of the exciting Fundred Dollar Bill Project! (GNV)

Jane Gravois flcreate@yahoo.com or 352-318-8921

An innovative artwork made of millions of drawings. "This creative collective action is intended to support OPERATION PAYDIRT, an extraordinary art/science project uniting three million children with educators, scientists, health care professionals, designers, urban planners, engineers and artists. Together they are working to make safe the lead polluted soil of New Orleans that places thousands of children at risk for severe learning disabilities and behavioral problems, including violent crime". The hope is that this can eventually be applied to other major cities with heavy metal pollution!

Artist Mel Chin came up with the idea for children to create their own hundred dollar bill (The Fundred) and when at least 300,000,000 were created and then collected, a Special Armored Truck with Guards will deliver the Fundred Dollar Bills to the U.S. Congress in Washington DC, where they will request an "even exchange"–300,000,000 Fundred Dollars for $300,000,000 in funds and services to support the implementation of Operation Paydirt’s efforts to make safe lead-polluted soils in New Orleans. This will at least bring awareness to the problem and the solutions!
If you haven't already, go to www.fundred.org to learn more about this nationwide project and to download the Fundred dollar bill (there are 2 sides) and draw your design on it. Adults can do this as well! You can mail them to this address:
Jackson Square
c/o Jane Gravois
1320 NW 3rd Ave #206
Gainesville, FL 32603

The vege-fueled armored truck is scheduled to come March 19th to Gainesville and pick up any bills we've collected for the cause. I hope to have some type of ceremony/celebration for the event. So far we have 690 Fundreds with about 1000 more promised! Be a part of the excitement, the cool art project and help out the families of New Orleans!!

Thank you!!

Golf & Landscape Operations -  Lake City Community College

Welcome back and Happy New Year!

We are all having to deal with budget cuts which affects travel, but we still need to get good information to students about career opportunities where there are jobs even in our slow economy. We have jobs in the golf and landscape industries; more jobs than we can fill. We need outside oriented, college bound, management oriented students. Interestingly, the landscape industry is in dire need on managers. Our programs are:
1. Golf Course Operations – 3 years – AS degree
2. Landscape Technology – 2 years – AS degree
3.
Turf Equipment Technology – one year – Applied Technology Diploma – articulates into an AS degree in Turf Equipment Management

Also, remember that our AS degrees above articulate to Saint Leo University on our campus so that in two more years students can earn a bachelors in business on top of our AS degree; very powerful combination!

Horse:

Haven Horse Ranch

We have one of the finest programs around; not because we think so, but because our moms think so. We have a copy of our flyer for lessons and summer camps to forward to anyone.  Please call and ask or visit our web site.

The results have spoken for themselves for the past 20 years and over 4,000 children that have come through our programs. The only problem is that even after that long and that many successes, we are one of the best kept secrets in the area.

As a Christian, non-profit ranch, we strive to help kids learn from horses all that they can teach in a family oriented, safe environment here in St Augustine. Our riding students come from as far as 60 miles away because of our programs. We also have more than a 70% return rate from our moms with a 35% plus referral rate. In short, we are time tested and mom approved!

We have recently added 2 riding instructors, both moms in their own rights, who now offer lessons during the day for home schoolers. Our summer camp program begins June 6th. We would appreciate any help you can provide by passing this on to other Home School families.

If I can answer any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask. If there is any other way we can be of service, please let us know. Thank you very much.

Lady Christendom (for young ladies) and West Point Christian Academy (for young men)

I am Lisa Hazelton, the current director of Hope Homeschoolers in Lakeland.  I just wanted to share something with you that I thought might be of interest to your group in the Gainesville area. They are programs called Lady Christendom (for young ladies) and West Point Christian Academy (for young men) run by William and Jill Roy (and their daughters) from North Carolina.  They are week-long "day camps" for students ages 8 -15.

West Point offers a comprehensive history curriculum from an unashamedly Christian Worldview, physical endurance tests, obstacle courses, marksmanship, strategy concepts, and Biblical character for young men.  These camps run from 10:00 a.m - 4:00 p.m. for the week, with a special program for families on Friday evening.

Lady Christendom offers lessons in civility and etiquette, Scripture memory, domestic cuisine skills, physical exercise, nutrition, and personal dress and modesty.  These camps run from 10:30 - 1:30 (or 3:30 with the optional extended program) for the week, with a special mother/daughter tea on Friday at lunch time.

Four of my children have participated in these camps for the past two years and have thoroughly enjoyed them!  They have learned many lessons from the Roys which they will carry with them for a lifetime.  The part I love the best is that the Roys are truly reinforcing the Christian values in which I am endeavoring to train my children, and they are such Godly role models for my children.  Their website is www.churstorian.com . If you have time, go there and go to the Character Camps section and check it out.  You will be able to see more details than I can give here.

We hope to offer these camps in Lakeland again next March, but the Roys would like to have several other camps in Florida around the same time if possible.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Roys directly at Churstorian@ntelos.net .  Also, please feel free to share this with any others you think might be interested.

Thanks for your time!
Lisa

Nutrition:
Inspiring Children to Make Healthy Choices
Verna Groger, RD
Registered Dietitian and Certified Personal Trainer
www.JoyfullyFit.com  ; verna@groger.net
Home: 352-374-7907  Cell: 352-514-1305

When children learn the importance of good nutrition and exercise, they often become very proactive in taking care of their health. I have weekly Healthy Family Parties designed to equip and inspire children to go against the unhealthy tide of our society and commit to good stewardship in the area of eating and physical activity. I can provide this in my home or anywhere you like.

These events follow the following format:
I talk a little about why we need antioxidants in our diet, what they are, where they are found, and how they protect the body from disease. I tell an interactive story.

The children go into an adjoining room and play Traffic Light Eating while the moms (dads welcome also) watch Dr. William Sears' 9 Simple Steps to a Healthier Family Diet DVD (12 minutes).

I share information about a form of concentrated fruits and vegetables available in a capsule, chewable, or gummie that Dr. Sears and many other widely known physicians recommend. There is no obligation to buy.

Parents frequently find their children very motivated by what they learn and empowered to lead the family in making healthy choices.  Oftentimes, when the lessons being taught at home are reinforced by a health professional, it increases the effectiveness.

The times I'm available to do this are:
All day Friday
Saturday afternoon and evenings
Thursday evenings

Call or email if you're interested or have any questions. Refreshments will be served. If anyone would like to see the details of the story or the game, go to the Events page of my website where there are links to the PDF files.

Hello,
My name is Kam Bosket. I am hoping that you can spread the word about our Homeschool P.E. to your fellow homeschooling families. My company, Inspire Sports League, is offering Homeschool P.E. to the Gainesville area Homeschoolers.  The class will be on Tuesdays, at Kanapaha Park, starting in September, for grades K-8.  The class fee is economical, and sibling discounts are offered.   The focus of the P.E. class is fitness and fun.  Registration is open now at www.inspiresportsleague.com  .

As a side note about me, my family and I will be moving to Gainesville in the next month.  We are a homeschooling family, with three boys.  We have been homeschooling for five years.  We have offered a Homeschool P.E. in the Jacksonville FL area, where we currently live, for the past three years, with great success.  We are bringing our P.E. class to Gainesville, along with our other business ventures, as we love to be involved in the local Homeschool Community.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.  I appreciate any help you can provide in spreading the word to homeschooling families who may be looking for this opportunity.

Thanks in advance

I'm a homeschooling father of five and have been teaching piano professionally since 1992.  My goal has been to glorify God through excellent, encouraging teaching.  Curriculum includes some music theory (why we do what we do), ear training (helps to read music or play by ear), and songs that are a fun challenge to learn and enjoyable to hear.  I emphasize different parts of this curriculum depending on the specific needs and desires of my students and their families, so talk with me about your goals for music!  I am equipped to teach styles ranging from classical to the best of contemporary music (including reading chord symbols).  My special niche is teaching interested students how to arrange hymns and praise songs to use in worship.  Many people think you must be born with the ability to arrange music, but this is not true – it can be taught (and I really enjoy teaching it ).  I can teach you in my home studio (tuition is $70/month), but the more popular option with my students has been for me to teach in their homes (with a travel fee), freeing up their schedules.

There is a large ice cream cone on the wall.  For each book they read they can write their name and the name of the book on a scoop and put it on the cone. Hope this helps. You might offer to take them out for ice cream for reading a certain number of books.

Thanks again.

Homeschool Connection SAT Prep Registration Form

http://cornerstone.st/_docs/Form-HomeschoolConnection-SAT-Registration.pdf

Would you like to have someone come along side you to prepare your student for the SAT? Cornerstone is offering an SAT Prep Course (at a fraction of the cost of other small group courses offered by big name companies) to help your student prepare for Bright Futures scholarships and college applications.

The course will consist of eight 90-minute class meetings. Class will be held at Cornerstone Academy, 3401 NW 34th St. (Heritage Park) on Thursdays. The cost for the 8 week class is $90 to be paid with registration (See Registration Form above). A minimum of five students is needed for a class.

About the Course: Thursdays, Sept. 17 to Thursday, November 19, 2009 (8 class meetings - no meeting on Oct. 15)
Time: 10:30 am to 12 noon. (Alternate time is 2:30 pm to 4 pm Thursdays. Please let me know your preference.)

This course is designed for homeschooled students preparing to take the SAT for admission to college and/or Bright Futures eligibility. The course will be customized for you personally. You will meet with me in a small group setting for 90-minutes weekly. Class time will be devoted to analyzing and strengthening weak areas, learning test taking strategies, and any necessary review of concepts. You will first be assessed on all three components (critical reading, math and writing), by taking a practice SAT test. Assignments will then be customized for you to work especially in the areas that you desire to improve. If you plan to take the PSAT test on October 17th, this class will prepare you for that test, too. Lots of practice and being very familiar with the types of questions is key to doing well on these tests! Purchase of the preparation book offered by the College Board, (the maker of the SAT test),called The Official SAT Study Guide Second Edition will be required. It may be purchased at this link: www.collegeboard.com or for cheaper at www.amazon.com ($12.86.)

About the instructor:  Mrs. Sue Spencer

Speech:

IMPACT Speech and Debate Club (GNV)

Shared by: Mardy Freeman

Hi Everyone!  I'm sending a quick note out to to let you all know about a really wonderful opportunity that our kids have participated in for the past few years: the IMPACT Speech and Debate Club here in Gainesville.  I can't say enough good about it, really.  It's run by Susan Minchin and her children, Joy, Joshua and Minch.  These young people are all speech and debate winners on the state and national level and they have a desire to share their skills with other young people.  The Minchin kids strive to keep a sweet spirit of Christian love and team-like camaraderie, where students feel more comfortable learning and practicing speeches together.

However, students will have opportunities to compete in regional events if they like.  We've had a student who went on to place fourth at a regional event (one place shy of being able to compete at national level), and sometimes a child will place lower, or sometimes not win anything at all. We've even had a couple of students who attend club but decided not to compete.  ALL of the kids were glad they were a part of IMPACT.  They learned, and were given a platform to practice, very good public speaking skills - the best, really.  And they had a lot of fun.  So much that our caboose Joel (14) just signed up for another year.

Here are the details:

IMPACT Speech and Debate Club (GNV)

Joy Minchin: joyousservant@gmail.com  or (352) 222-2877 or www.freewebs.com/gainesville_impact

Gainesville IMPACT Speech and Debate Club will be kicking off the 2009-2010 season soon! We plan to hold an informal, informational meeting at 3:00 in the afternoon on Friday, August 28th, at Antioch Baptist Church (visit our website for the church address). Club meetings will begin on Monday, September 14th from 2:00 - 6:00.

The purpose of our club is to equip young people with communication skills and build character in their lives so that they can glorify God and make an impact in their world. "And who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?"

We would love to help your family improve their communication! If you have any questions or would like to know more, please visit our website, e-mail me or give me a call.

A One-Day Seminar for High School age students and their teachers

Thurs., Jan. 22: Fort Myers, FL - Evangelical Free Church

$50.00/participant; parents or teachers $25 if attending with student (Full Session Description Below)
To Register: http://www.excellenceinwriting.com/events (or call 800-856-5815)

The Two Andrews Seminar Sessions Include:

• The four language arts: listening, reading, speaking, and writing – Pudewa
Nurture excellent communication skills even more effectively by understanding the relationships among these four critical skills.
• The five paths to great writing – Kern
Theoretical: understanding the science of writing
Literary: studying the great masterpieces of literature as models
Critical: learning the details of good usage
Practical: practicing the art of writing
Linguistic: translating great works of literature into and out of English
• The distinctives of classical rhetoric – Kern
The three canons as solutions to the three problems; the place of rhetoric as the “deep logic” of the entire curriculum and therefore as the natural ordering principle of the student’s studies; indeed, what was classical rhetoric and what happened to it?
• Developing the essayist: a natural approach – Pudewa
How can a student move from simply reporting facts to the more sophisticated skill of using facts to support an opinion? Learn several different essay models, and discover a gradual method of building the analytical writer, starting even at the elementary level?
• Assessment – Pudewa/Kern
Marking and grading: objectivity, motivation, and sanity. How to keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and planting seeds of doubt.
• Common problems in teaching & where do you go from here? – Pudewa/Kern
Get every question answered; know what’s the next step for you and your students!

Andrew Kern is the president of the Circe Institute, a leading provider of inspiration, information, and insight to classical educators throughout the world. He is creator of The Lost Tools of Writing™ Workshops and materials, and consults on board development, school leadership, and establishing classical schools while conducting teacher training workshops for schools and home school groups. Circe’s annual conference is the premier event (http://www.circeinstitute.org ) for educators seeking to use classical education to nurture wisdom and virtue.

Andrew Pudewa is the director of the Institute for Excellence in Writing and a homeschooling father of seven. Presenting throughout North America, he addresses issues relating to teaching, writing, thinking, spelling, and music with clarity and insight, practical experience and humor. His seminars for parents, students, and teachers have helped transform many a reluctant writer and have equipped educators with powerful tools to dramatically improve communication skills.

The High School Essay Intensive...
...is an excellent way to get immediate experience and inside tips on how to do your best on the timed, 25 minute response to a prompt required on the new SAT test. Participants will actually write two full essays, carefully study and then apply the College Board evaluation criteria to sample essays, while receiving a detailed booklet of resources and lesson plans for continued practice. Additionally, students will learn special structure and style tools for use in composing the college application "personal essay"—an entirely different type of writing task. The complete process will be presented: choosing the question, creating the outline, and polishing a final version. Participants will leave with a clear concept of the task, their own outline for an actual personal essay, and several new tricks and techniques to add to their repertoire.

Although this seminar is specifically designed for those who will be taking the SAT or submitting college applications within the next 1-2 years (and especially those teaching such students), it is also useful for general writing practice, tools and tips. It is open to all students, regardless of their experience with IEW courses or materials. A lot of actual writing is done during this six-hour class.

Comments from past attendees:
"I really didn't want to come, but my mom made me, and I am soooo glad I did. It's really going to help me, and I'm not so worried about the SAT essay any more."
"I took the SAT last spring and did okay, but I'm going to do it again and go for a better score. With this new information, I'm very sure I'll do better on the essay portion."
"Mr. Pudewa’s seminar is like the rock concert of writing classes."
"This workshop just de-mystified the whole thing for me. Thanks!"
"Although I've been in many of your classes before, this was awesome. I especially loved the strategies for quickly planning and outlining a short essay, and the advice about how to formulate an opinion and just go for it, even if you're a little undecided about the question. Also the TRIAC paragraph model is awesome—it makes it so easy to organize a good paragraph."
"Really glad I came. I learned a lot. (And I got out of school, too!)"
"I came to be with my son, but I actually had a lot of fun myself. I sure wish I knew some of this when I was going into college!"

Homeschooled Teen Writers
Rachael Hartley PalominoWarrior5@aol.com

I am trying to start a club for Teenagers aged 13-18 who like to write- fiction, nonfiction, poetry or drama/plays...Whatever your personal preference is. It would be a primarily online club, with meetings once a month at local libraries. In addition to trading tips and ideas for writing, members would submit pieces of their writing for the other members to critique, and critique other members writing in return. We would also read and analyze one short book each month, alternating fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

DOES YOUR CHILD HAVE THE EDISON TRAIT? by Lucy Jo Palladino

www.quickstudylabs.com/EdisonProject/Information/the_edison_trait.htm

The Edison Project!

The Edison Project is designed for kids who possess the Edison Trait www.quickstudylabs.com and the program uses equipment available from your local Radio Shack.  Hands-on science is so much fun and Radio Shack recommends their equipment for “Age 8 to 108” so the entire family can get involved or the kids can do it safely by themselves.  Judging from my experience the younger kids may have extreme difficulties keeping this equipment away from mom and dad (Especially Dad!) long enough to do the experiments.  Just kidding!

Read G. A. Henty Online

Hello,

My name is Zachary Miller, and I was homeschooled almost all my life. One of my favorite things to do in my free time was to read all the books by G. A. Henty. The only thing is, I never actually read ALL the books, because my family could not afford to buy them all.

Henty books are one of the most popular book series with homeschoolers, and are one of the best ways to learn history, but should families really have to pay over $1200 just to read them all? Well, I don’t think so, and that’s why I started the company G. A. Henty Online. What we do is provide a way for families to be able to enjoy some of the greatest historical fiction novels of all time, without breaking the bank. In fact, we are the only company in the world that can provide you with some of the rarest stories Henty ever wrote.

You can find out more about what we offer at: www.gahentyonline.com

Christian-owned Horse Magazine

Hi there!
My name is Mandee Widrick and I am the editor of a Christian-owned horse magazine based out of NY. Being a homeschool graduate myself, I would like to introduce to you Bit & Bridle, as I believe it may be of interest to your homeschool group. This magazine is not only great for young horse owners, but it is also directed at those who aren't fortunate enough to have their own horse. We feature interviews with top horsemen such as Lew Sterrett and John Lyons, advice from certified veterinarians and other professionals, subscriber interaction and contests, fictional and true stories, and much more. We are also now accepting freelance submissions from young writers and photographers over the age of 16. The website is www.bitandbridlemag.com for anyone who would like more information. This magazine prints bi-monthly, and subscriptions are available for $15 (US funds) per year. (Sample issues are $3 each and available by request.)

Advertising space is also available for business owners, starting at only $30 per issue.

Sincerely,
Mandee Widrick

Website to Check Reading Level

www.arbookfind.com (click on “advanced search”)

This is a website designed for the Accelerated Reader program for public schools. The students read books and then take an online test for comprehension. They earn points if they pass the test and the school receives some kind of reward for the points the students earn. We don’t participate in the program, but I have found the website helpful for checking on the approximate reading level for books we read. You can query the database by title, author or reading level. The reading levels are by grade, by month. For example 3.4 would be third grade, fourth month. Of course the reading levels are somewhat subjective so I would only use it as a guide and not a diagnostic tool.

Above Rubies

Recipes for Health (on left-hand side) - Our Daily Bread

"Prior to the 1900;s most flour was milled locally and bread was baked at home. God designed the wheat kernel, as well as other grains, to perfectly store the nutrients within. Once broken open, as in milling, the nutrients immediately begin to oxidize. Within about 72 hours, 90 per cent of over 30 nutrients are virtually gone. Since the germ oil causes the flour to turn rancid very quickly, only enough grain was ground each day to meet the needs of the community. This meant that just about every family was gathering their manna daily."

MINISTRY SERVICE

----- Original Message -----
From: Bill and Mardy Freeman
Sent: Thursday, January 14, 2010 5:07 PM
Subject: [Moms Group] Helping Haiti

Our family has been saddened along w/you all by reports coming out of Haiti since the earthquake.  We have longtime friends who have served as missionaries to Haiti for years, but they are now serving in Mexico, so we no longer have connections there.

We did hear that WSKY is collecting donations to be given (completely) to Harvest International.  http://www.thesky973.com/pages/233877.php

And Kimberly Oliver kimberlyoliver@bellsouth.net wrote the following note: At this point Fl Baptist is putting together some Haiti relief info. They hope to have a plan together within the next few days.

Last, I just received this note from Amy Buzbee abuzbee@windstream.net

Hi All, Just another opportunity to help. I can very confidently vouch for this young man. He was one of my students and I know his family well. This would be a hands-on help I assure you. Again, no pressure and you don’t have to respond to me at all, I just wanted to pass this along to you. If you want to help and do not have a Facebook account, you can email Theresa Zerr and I am sure she would be happy to assist you. Her email is: tamrslatin@yahoo.com

Dear friends:
It is almost 2010!  Christmas was good.  My son was here for the day.

One change in January's party schedule - no party at Gainesville Health.  Something else has been scheduled in our regular time.  With my schedule, I can't rearrange so we won't be there in January.

Monday Jan. 4  popcorn at Signature at 2:30

Tuesday Jan. 5  popcorn at Park Meadows  at 2:30

Tuesday Jan. 12  popcorn at Altrusa at 2:00

Monday Jan. 18  birthday at Signature at 2:30

Tuesday Jan. 19  birthday at Park Meadows at 2:30

As always, thank you for your faithful help in serving the people.  They enjoy seeing the children and having someone spend time with them one on one.  You have a servant's heart.

Thank you again!  Happy New Year!
In His love, Lena

Operation Christmas Child Final Numbers

Final total for the Santa Fe River Area was long in coming, but we have all the shoe boxes rounded up. They have been through the Atlanta Processing Center, through the Port of Charleston, and are currently on ships sailing across the Atlantic Ocean. Our shoe box gifts are destined for India, Pakistan, Ukraine, and Benin.

The Santa Fe River Area sent 12,054 shoe boxes! This is more than last year! The Atlanta Processing Center received over 830,000 shoe boxes. Again, this is more than last year! Not only were there enough shoe boxes to fill the requests of India, Pakistan (the sensitive Muslim country), and Ukraine, but there were also enough shoe boxes to ship to Benin in West Africa! The generosity of God's people is amazing!

Many thanks to everyone who came out for the Home School Day during Collection Week. And, many thanks to each family that packed shoe boxes! The shoe boxes are on their way! Each shoe box will be that child’s first ever Christmas present ,and their first chance to hear about Jesus Christ and His love for them!

A Word of Thanks!

What a tremendous day today!!!! We enjoyed all of you! Thank you, thank you for coming!!!

When you look across the gym and see all those empty cartons, know that the Gainesville Collection Center is ready to receive shoe boxes and that each shoe box represents the eternal soul of a child. It is like taking an umbrella to a prayer meeting when you are praying for rain. We are expecting lots and lots of shoe boxes and we now prepared to receive them!

If you would, please continue in prayer that the shoe boxes would flood in and that we would fill both Roadway trailers and need a third!

Below are some ideas to extend the OCC Tour. Some math, some writing, some geography. If you have any ideas to add, please let me know!

Today was hugely successful! If you want to put the 2010 Homeschool Day on your calendar, we’ll plan for the first Monday of Collection Week – November 15, 2010.

We enjoyed chatting and sharing with each of you. Again, thank you for your service to the Lord.

Looking for a Sponsor

Yhonny lives North of La Paz in a very remote area. Many homes don't even have running water and electricity. Yhonny doesn't have a father in the home and he has 3 siblings. Average income in this area is about $114/month. I sponsor a child in that same student center.

Sponsoring him involves:

1. Praying for him.
2. Writing him a letter of encouragement from time to time.
3. $38/month.

The order that I wrote this in is the right order. The prayers and the letters are far more important than the $38. The reason being is that the children really love their sponsors and they really look for the letters from the sponsors.

I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone may have.

This is an interview, that I did with the President of Compassion. It also provides a lot of information

The hours are the same as her library and just kindly ask about being able to go in a browse around.  It has been straightened up lately, although it still needs some work, I believe one can find something in there better now!  :-)

Also, when you leave ... please let Lena know you are done as she has to lock up that other building!  Thanks!!

Please put your name on the sign out sheet along with the books you borrowed.  And when you return the books, please put a line through your name.  You may check items out as long as you need.

When you bring items back, please re-shelve.  If time does not permit you to do this, please put your name on the bag you brought the books in so your name can be crossed out.  Thanks so much!

I want everyone to know that we are the ONLY organization in our area that helps with these items: FOOD, CLOTHING, SHOES and TOYS.

We have also partnered with another ministry through our church and when we have extra items that we cannot use we are now sending items to the Appalachian Mountain areas. My sister and her husband, along with two other couples are going several times a year to take clothing, toys and food items.

LEGISLATIVE/ POLITICAL

Court Upholds State-Sponsored “Kidnapping” of Homeschooled Boy (Sweden)

Donnelly continued, “HSLDA is gravely concerned about this case as it represents what can happen to other families who might wish to homeschool their children. Furthermore, in response to inquiries from HSLDA, Swedish authorities have cited the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child to explain and defend their actions. If the U.S. were to ever ratify this treaty, then state-sponsored kidnapping could occur here. Every homeschooler would be at risk. Such treatment of families and children is inhumane and inconsistent with a reasonable understanding of basic human rights. Therefore, we are asking our members to contact Swedish officials asking them to return Dominic Johansson to his family.”

Merry Christmas from ParentalRights.Org!

As things quiet down around the PRO office for the last couple weeks of 2009, we are mindful of and thankful for the victories and accomplishments of this year. With your help, we have introduced the Amendment in both houses of Congress and garnered the support of 129 House and 6 Senate sponsors. We have prepared resolutions to put in to a number of State legislatures early next year showing support for the Amendment at the State level. We have started a number of local chapters all over the country, and built a national infrastructure to carry our campaign through to the ratification of the Parental Rights Amendment. In short, thanks to you, we have had a very good year.
Money is tight, of course, but the vast majority of you understand that just as much as we do.

Still, we hope you and yours can quiet down for at least a part of the next two weeks just as we will, to focus on things more important than money, more permanent than our Constitution. In my house, we will celebrate the self-sacrificing incarnation of a redemptive Creator. However you celebrate, we wish you a merry Christmas full of peace and reflection, a renewal of your faith and hope.

In case you need to reach us, please be aware that our offices will be short-handed until January 4, and will be closed Dec. 24-25 and

Dec. 31-Jan. 1.

Thank you for your support in 2009. It is our hope that we might share greater victories together in the coming year!

Director of Communications and Research

Gainesville Mayor 2010

Shared by: Jeanette Breckenridge

Hi Everyone,
The City of Gainesville will be electing a new mayor in March, 2010, along with a Commissioner of District 4.

If you know of someone that feels they can serve in these positions, please ask them to step forward.
They must be a resident of the City, and if running for the Commission, must live in District 4 for at least six months.

We need volunteers for the above campaign efforts.  If you or someone you know would like to get involved in Gainesville's future direction, we need you.  It does not matter if you live in the City or the County, all are welcome.

First, and foremost, we need persons who are willing to pray individually, and collectively, over the next 5 months for the leadership of Gainesville and the direction to lead the community.

Along with,

1.  Persons who are organizers that can help organize campaign efforts.

2.  Persons who are servers who can work on campaign activities.

3.  Persons who can work at headquarters.

4.  Persons who can make phone calls, write letters, visit family, friends and neighbors on behalf of the candidates.

5.  Persons who can make more formal presentations at meetings on behalf of candidates.

6.  Persons who can hold signs near election time on street corners, voting areas, etc.

7.  Persons who can donate financially to the campaign efforts.

8.  Persons who can fundraise on behalf of the candidates to associations, organizations, businesses, etc.

9.  Persons who can open their homes or businesses for gatherings or meetings.

10.  Persons who can prepare or donate food for these events.

Parental Rights.org

Back in July, we held a phone blitz campaign and gathered 7 new House cosponsors and 1 new senator. Over the last two weeks, we picked up 7 new House cosponsors and TWO new senators. This puts us over 120 cosponsors in the U.S. House, along with 6 senators.
This success is because we haven’t been just sitting around since July. We are constantly increasing our numbers, so that we can persuade even the tougher congressmen to get onboard.

August 28, 2009

Dear Friends,

The process of selecting a United States Senator has been guided by the intent to select someone of great honor and integrity, who also has demonstrated a commitment to serve the people of our state.

I am grateful to the Floridians we considered for this appointment – for their service in their respective capacities, and for their patience with this process. They are honorable men and women of great distinction, and I thank them all for their wisdom and their candor.

I am also grateful to Senator Mel Martinez for his years of service to our great state. His is a story that illustrates the American Dream for so many in this country and around the world. I wish him and his family well as he transitions back into private life.

The guiding principle of my career, my campaigns, and our administration has been public service. I have had the great honor to work with so many hard working public servants who choose to put service above self in ways that inspire and encourage me to continue my commitment to the people each and every day.

So many of the individuals who serve in our administration sacrifice time with their families and financial opportunities in the private sector to give back to the very communities that nurtured their upbringing in our great state and around the country.

George LeMieux has been a tremendous example of this very type of commitment. When the private sector first called, George chose the path of public service – to first serve as Deputy Attorney General, and then as Chief of Staff in our administration.

I am proud to inform you today that I am appointing former Deputy Attorney General George LeMieux to the United States Senate where he will serve the remainder of Senator Mel Martinez's term.

He has argued before the United States Supreme Court and played an integral role in the creation of the Florida Cyber Crime Unit. He was instrumental in developing legislation to pro
