PRAYER & PRAISE

URGENT CALL TO PRAYER

Hello Friends,
Would you please pray for the National Bible Bee, which will be held during the first week of November in Washington, DC.  For further news, go to
www.biblebee.org .

Your prayers are truly needed for this FIRST-EVER event!!!
In Jesus' Love,
~ Peters Family

Dear Bible Bee Contestant Families, Volunteers, and Friends,
As most of you know, we are less than two weeks away from the 2009 National Bible Bee Contest in Washington, D.C.  As we make our final plans and preparations, we have an urgent prayer request.  The National Bible Bee cannot function without lots of key volunteers and we are currently short.

We have a number of volunteer roles to fill (judges, proctors, runners, prayer warriors, etc.) and we need to have all of our volunteers signed up by October 30th (but preferably this week), so we appreciate your fervent prayers on our behalf.

Please pray that God will open up the floodgates and bring in all the volunteers that are needed to carry out this inaugural event.   It is our desire to equip children and youth to be ambassadors for Jesus Christ as they learn, speak, and live out God’s Word.  Help us turn this nation back to God by joining us in intercessory prayer as we prepare to boldly proclaim God’s Word in our nation’s Capitol!

If you, or any of your family or friends, are able to volunteer, please click one of the following links:
For Volunteer Information http://www.biblebee.org/nationals2009/volunteers.php
To Sign up as a Volunteer / Prayer Warrior http://www.biblebee.org/nationals2009/vvolunteernow.php

If you have any questions, please email us at info@biblebee.org .

Please feel free to pass the word on and forward this to others. Thank you very much for your faithfulness, prayers, and support!
Proclaiming God’s Word and Exalting our Savior!

In Memoriam: Chris Klicka

4-2-1961 – 10-12-2009

A longtime champion of homeschooling rights around the globe, Home School Legal Defense Association Senior Counsel and Director of State and International Relations Christopher J. Klicka was called home by his Lord on October 12, 2009, at age 48, following a 15-year battle with multiple sclerosis. An attorney, spokesman, lobbyist, and homeschooling husband and father, Chris is survived by his wife, Tracy, their seven children (ages 11–21), and his parents, Ardath and George Klicka.

“Chris was both a people person and a goal person. He cared deeply about people, but was also driven to always do more!” says HSLDA President J. Michael Smith. “He was the most determined person I ever met in my life. Even with all the things he accomplished every day at HSLDA, he continually wanted to tackle new challenges and serve homeschoolers in more and better ways. He was so focused on the homeschooling world, but he was also very much focused on his family and dedicated to raising his children.”

An integral part of Home School Legal Defense Association’s staff for 24 years, Chris was HSLDA’s first full-time employee, first executive director, and first full-time attorney. He believed passionately that homeschooling was the best educational method for children and demonstrated that passion in every area of his life.

Chris and Tracy homeschooled all seven of their children. He traveled across the United States (and around the world) defending families’ right to homeschool and advocating homeschooling. He participated in countless radio interviews on homeschooling issues. He wrote five books on homeschooling, penned numerous articles, and had two more books in progress when he passed away. He lobbied state legislators, U.S. senators, and foreign diplomats to support homeschooling. He sought greater freedom for homeschooling parents and students in every area—from local school districts to sports associations, college admissions departments, and military recruitment requirements. He sought to educate the educators, truant officers, policemen, judges, and even social workers about the benefits and legality of homeschooling.

Even deeper than his passion for homeschooling was his deep love for his Lord. We may never know how many people Chris inspired to homeschool or continue homeschooling, or how many people he inspired to draw near to his Lord.

“Chris’s accomplishments as a lawyer for homeschooling are clear and of value that cannot be overstated. He was one of the most important pioneers of our movement,” says HSLDA Chairman Mike Farris. “He believed that this truly is God’s way to teach children to love God. He believed it deeply. His conviction was infectious. He was a man of single-hearted devotion that I have never, ever seen equaled. The passion that Chris felt for the mission to which God called him never, ever, ever, ever dimmed, even slightly.”

HSLDA deeply appreciates and honors Chris’s life and his dedicated contribution to our organization and to homeschooling. Our staff will miss him more than we can express, and we are praying with and for his family. The homeschooling movement has lost one of its greatest advocates and friends, but Chris leaves an incredible legacy of freedom and awareness of homeschooling to the thousands of homeschooled students whose parents have made The Right Choice.

”I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day-and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.“ II Timothy 4:7-8

”Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life.“ Revelation 2:10

"And David said ... Is there not a cause?" (1 Samuel 17:29).  If you're like me you have probably struggled with apparently insurmountable obstacles.  David challenges us so many years later with his words and his example to look beyond the obstacle to the Almighty God.

Praises:
1.  We praise God for providing a substantial increase in special giving and two honorariums toward Steve and Maxine's personal support in September.  These were welcome blessings and have brought our support account current.
2.  We praise the Lord for an answer to a previous prayer request on whether to pay for the opportunity to teach Good News Clubs in certain public schools.  Our oversight committee decided that we would not pay for access to provide a free service.  We will instead switch our focus to venues where we are more welcome at this time.
3.  We praise the Lord that Good News Clubs are beginning this week.
4.  We praise the Lord for providing some volunteers to serve with us at the 1890's Day in McIntosh on October 24th.

Prayers:
1.  Will you continue to pray with us for wisdom to know who to call and how hard to push as we seek to increase the number of Good News Clubs?
2.  Will you pray with us that God will provide additional, dedicated team members willing to be trained and to go with us to teach the children? (The harvest fields surround us.  They include the Good News Clubs and the 1890's Day.)
3.  Will you pray with us for a fresh anointing and a passion like David's to face the giants?
4.  Will you pray for increases in support for Steve and Cheri Westbrooks and the costs of ministry overhead?

We appreciate your faithful prayers!  You are a blessing to us and the children!  May God continue to bless you!

What a wonderful 80th birthday party!  Such an outpouring of love and appreciation from so many people!

The cards from the children - they will fill a memory box - and the cards from adults too!

So much work went into the planning and decorating - and trying to keep a secret!  The children sang beautifully!  The little books made with Reading Roundup pictures are special!

So many things I can't name all of them - thank you so much!

See you soon in the Library!

Heartstrings and Bright Lights (LC)
Stephanie Johns 386-755-5520 or tsjohns@comcast.net

Heartstrings is a meeting to encourage homeschool moms.
We meet the last Tuesday (Except Nov. & Dec.) of each month from 7:00-9:00 at the home of Sherry Miller in Lake City.
For directions, call 386 755-5520 or email tsjohns@comcast.net

We will be sharing testimonies this year of what God is doing in our families.
This group shares a common thread that we all desire to be the wife and mom God wants us to be.
We realize that it is God who is working in us and He alone can transform us and in so doing will also tranform our homes and families into what He desires them to be.

We gain much by coming together and encouraging one another as we walk along this path together.
Bring a friend and a snack to share.

Bright Lights meets at the same time and is for girls ages 10 and up. Please bring your Bible and book.  We will place a book order after the first meeting. We will have two classes this year.

Bright Lights is a discipleship program by Sarah Malley.
The purpose is...
1.To encourage the pursuit of godliness
2.To provide positive peer influence and accountability
3.To have a group which can be a team to minister to others

What is a “bright light”? It is a girl who knows how to respond just right to people and circumstances. It is a girl who has Biblical convictions and commitments, and is able to go through her teenage years strong for the Lord without stumbling as many do. It is a girl who touches the lives of others by her servant’s spirit and the message of eternal life through Jesus Christ. God wants bright lights! There is a great need for more of them in this generation of darkness.

Stephanie Johns tsjohns@comcast.net

Hello Homeschool Moms,
We had a great meeting last month. Thank you for coming and sharing with us.  It was fun to talk about the "best and worst" aspects of homeschooling.  It was good to laugh together and encourage one another along.

Our next two meetings will be moved to the third Tuesday of the month.  So we will meet on Tuesday, October 20th and Tuesday, November 17th.

Please pass this date change on to anyone who may want to come.  All are welcome. We will be meeting at Sherry Miller's home. Bright Lights-the discipleship program for girls ages 10 and up will meet during Heartstrings as usual on the dates above.

In January, we will resume meeting on the last Tuesday of the month.  I hope you are having a great week and hope to see you next week!

Blessings,

4th Annual Homeschool Cruise

Hello,
My name is Gretchen Pfeiffer, and I am a homeschool mom from Charlotte, NC.  I am helping to promote an annual homeschool cruise that my family and I have attended.  It was one of the best vacations we have ever had.

Join other homeschool families from all over the southeastern US and beyond for the 4th ANNUAL HOMESCHOOL CRUISE to the Southern Caribbean on January 7 - 15, 2010 out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida aboard the Carnival Miracle.  This is an 8 day cruise to "God's Country": St. Maarten, St. Kitts and St. Lucia.  Prices begin at only $1933.84 for a family of four which includes $100 onboard credit per cabin.  Also lots of fun family group activities onboard will be offered.  Prices include everything except transportation to the port, parking at the port, travel insurance, shore excursions, tips, soft drinks, and alcohol.  Deposits of only $50 per person will reserve your cabin today!  For further info, contact Gretchen at pfeifferhome@gmail.com to have a attachment sent to you with more information.

"Passion for Jesus" (Inverness)

I wanted to let you know about a wonderful conference in January for girls/women. A group of young women (mostly in their 20's) who have all been homeschooled are reaching out to other girls through a conference called, "Passion for Jesus."

http://apassionforjesus.com/new_date

It is about all the things young women consider as they prepare for their future. They use drama, song, stories and many rich, fresh testimonies in which they fly in the speakers from all over the US to come in and speak to get their point across. The ages for the event are12 years old ~ through their mother's age. We are suggesting mother's or grandmothers attend with their daughters/granddaughters as an opportunity to be on the same page with the teaching. It is also a great opportunity as a girls outing and bring friends or youth groups of young women.

The web site is info@apassionforjesus.com an informational phone # : 813.453.8200.  We attended this conference last year in
Tampa, they had over 250 in attendance and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has a daughter. Posters and registration are online. The date is Saturday, January 30th, 2010 at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Inverness, FL

Joy Fellowship Group (ALA & High Springs)
Joy: Jesus, Others, You!
Dates:  First and Third Fridays of the month from 1-3
Locations:  Call or email for info.
Lori LaBelle waitingonjc@windstream.net or 386-454-8634

Do you and your kids need some fellowship and fun in your homeschool schedule?  If so, we would like to invite you to attend the Joy Fellowship Group, meeting the first and third Fridays of the month, from 1:00 till 3:00.

We will meet at rotating places in the High Springs/Alachua area.  The main purpose of this group is fellowship!  We want to keep Christ the center of what we do, so this homeschool fellowship group is decidedly Christian (though we may have different churches!).  If you would like to have some fun seasonal parties, (Thanksgiving, Christmas), maybe field trips and also some fun “light” studies on chosen particular subjects, science, history or ??, let’s work together and have some fun with our children.

Mom's, we will have a coffee/tea time during fellowship/planning.   Ages: wide open here, I personally have a high school teenager (she will probably bring schoolwork), a 9 year old son and 2 year old daughter, so all ages are welcome, but we will probably have activities focused on the elementary ages. If you have older ones like me, they can use this time for a study group.  Mom’s if you have a great homeschool curriculum book that you have found, want to tell about or do an activity from, bring that too, so we can learn from each other.

Operation Christmas Child: Home School Day (GNV)
Denise Middleton dmiddleton@gru.net

Monday, November 16

10:00am to 11:00am tour and craft and snack
11:00am until noon volunteer – tape cartons

Home Schoolers, come experience volunteering at the Gainesville Collection Center. Volunteers are required to be at least 13 years old. However, on November 16th, we are having a special Home School Day. Children of any age can volunteer! We will start with a tour and snack, then volunteer! Since this is the first day of Collection Week, our agenda is: taping cartons. The large shipping cartons come flat on pallets. We need dozens and dozens taped together, labeled, and stacked in long columns. All materials and training will be provided. Stay as long as your Lil’ Ones wish to work. There is a lot within each task that Lil’ Ones can do. Instead of asking a Youth Group to volunteer on this day, the children will be given the chance to serve.

Please RSVP so we know how many snacks and crafts to prepare.

4-H SWAT Club Gilchrist County

There is a new 4-H project club starting in Gilchrist County focusing on Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT).  Any Gilchrist youth from grades 6-12 is welcome to attend the meetings and participate.  We will be completing a health related project, participating in state and national tobacco awareness observances in our county such as Kick Butts Day, and doing community service along with our 4-H activities.

We have a great group of 4-Hers ready to start our club and we would like to invite more concerned youth to join us.  All of the middle/high schools in the county have SWAT clubs, and this would be a great opportunity for anyone not involved in those clubs to participate in SWAT through 4-H.

Our first meeting will be held at the Gilchrist Library in Trenton on Monday, Nov. 9th at 6:30 PM.

For more information, please call Tracy DeCubellis, Tobacco Prevention Specialist (and homeschooler) at 352-538-5992 or email at tracyd@quitdoc.com .

American Sign Language - ASL (GNV)
Ann LeZotte

Class for students who already have a basic knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) will be on Monday's from 10:30-11:30 in the Storyhhour Room at the downtown Gainesville library.

Class for ASL beginners will be on Mondays from 10:30-11:30 in the Storyhour Room at the downtown Gainesville library. Next Wednesday, July 29, will be my first class for beginners. The classes will run as long as I have interested students! It’s okay if families have to miss class sometimes, as I have many review sessions.

I have just moved to the Gainesville Library. I previously worked at the Newberry Branch. I very much enjoyed teaching my ASL classes there. I find homeschool children to be very engaging students.

Art Workshop Classes
Teri Davis 352-846-6006 or
teridavi@ufl.edu
Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, and Hand Quilting

Classes are 4 sessions each, completed in 4 weeks. Each session lasts 1 hour.
Classes will be held at UF's Corry Village Commons Room. Time and days to be arranged. Price includes instruction, clay, materials,
fabric and firings.

$65.00 per child per course (4 session classes).

* Students will learn about clay and how to construct objects, prepare them for firing, and color treatments. A great program for
those interested in creative ceramics and who want the practical knowledge of working in clay.

* Improve your child's painting and drawing skills through a range of fun and stimulating exercises. Using their own unique vision,
they interpret the world around them creating artwork to treasure for years to come. A great way to learn painting and drawing skills and develop artistic ability.

* Students will learn the basics of hand quilting the way our grandmothers and great grandmothers did. Working with needle, fabric, and design, students will practice developing dexterity and experience the art of creative design. The finished product will be a small quilt, hot pad, or quilt art.

Teri has two masters degrees in Interdisciplinary Humanites and Art Education. She is an Art Educator at UF's Reitz Union Arts and Leisure Courses. Teri taught and interned at Wiles Elementary and A. Quinn Jones. Previously she taught Ceramics for 2 years at the University of West Florida. Presently she is a Substitute Teacher at Westwood Middle School and is JJ Finley Morning Fitness Coordinator. She has done numerous workshops with ages young and old, and has worked with special populations.

Art in the Park (GNV)

Jane Gravois flcreate@yahoo.com or 352-318-8921

Greetings!
I hope that everyone has had a good summer! I have been working hard to develop this year’s Art in the Park classes. The visual arts allow students to express themselves in visual form. Learning to see the world around them and putting these ideas into 2 and 3-dimensional forms is an exciting process. Working with various materials, practicing old and new skills, learning the language of art, creating, viewing and discussing the work of artists…all these processes help the student develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills and an appreciation for what art is and can be.

Please look over the new class descriptions and see if you would like to join me in an exploration of art and its processes. Please note there are two age level classes. (Some are similar-some more advanced skills)

Then use the sign-up sheet below by clicking reply (or copy and paste into new e-mail), filling in your child or children’s names and checking off the classes you have chosen.

Also is a registration form. Please print it out, fill it in and bring it with your payment to the first class.

Thank you and please call or email if you have any questions!
(I will be out of town the last week of August)

Bible Bee/Scripture memory programs + New camp in FL
In Christ, Phil Walker (845)416-8010 or philjohn1558@yahoo.com

Hi.  Even though most of this email will most benefit those participating in this first National 2009 Bible Bee www.biblebee.org , or planning to join next year's 2010 Bible Bee, I wanted to send this out to a wider audience since the main featured computer program is something I believe everyone interested in learning/memorizing Scripture would want to look into and consider using.

National Bible Bee headquarters has asked everyone who sends out unofficial helpful tips for the Bible Bee to include the following disclaimer:

Important: These materials are NOT official Bible Bee study materials and have NOT been reviewed for accuracy by The Shelby Kennedy Foundation. It is the responsibility of contestants and their families carefully to review the content of these study materials before using them. The Shelby Kennedy Foundation and the creator of these study materials are not responsible for inaccurate answers given by contestants in the Bible Bee Competition. Bible Bee Quiz Cards contain the official questions and answers for this year's Competition and will be considered the final standard for determining whether a contestant's answer is correct or incorrect.

I praise God for Keith Smith using his talent with computers to encourage, equip, and inspire us to memorize Scripture.  Some of you involved with Bible Bowl or various Bible Quizzing leagues may have already used his material.  I was thrilled to discover that Keith has made a version specifically for the 2009 Bible Bee.  I am daily using his program and believe it will benefit me greatly in my goal to memorize all 1,507 verses in this year's Bible Bee.  These verses are broken down into 4 categories so those who want to use the program to memorize less verses can easily adapt.

I am using the program at each of my Bible Bee camps.  This past week I spread the game to my students at Upton Lake Christian School in NY and have been encouraged by their enthusiastic response, usage, and already strong results after just a short time.  I can't wait to introduce the game to my new ministry at Hannibal Christian Academy in Hannibal, MO, and am promoting the game to every Bible Bee participant I know.

Below is Keith's description of how the program works.  I encourage you to check out the program on his website and then feel free to email him directly with any questions you may have using smith.keithc@gmail.com

"Bible Bee Quiz-Pro is a unique game over the Bible Bee questions and memory verses. It can be used to memorize the verses chronologically, and also as a quiz over your knowledge of the verses! The object is to complete the verse from a list of words displayed on the screen. You try to complete as many verses as you can in 5 minutes, and in the process accumulate the highest score. Scores can be optionally posted to the internet so that you can compete against others from around the nation! System requirements: Windows XP or Vista.  Take a tour online by visiting www.BibleBeeBuzz.net

Those who want to use the Bible Bee Quiz-Pro can purchase the program for single family use (allowed to be copied on multiple family computers in the same household) directly through the website.  Christian schools and other institutions can purchase licences to download the program on multiple computers on their complex.  I have purchased a licence for my school ULCS in Clinton Corners, NY and also for my new school HCA in Hannibal, MO and am very excited to see the impact this will have both in helping them excell at the Bible Bee, and much more importantly in helping them discover, trust, love, and serve the God of Scripture for all eternity.

I would also like to endorse another computer tool out there.  Greg Leininger has created "Memorize His Word" which features a tool to help make memorizing fun and easy and also a support system to help you reach your custom made memorizing goals.  I will be using his program at my new school in Hannibal, MO and encourage you to check out www.memorizehisword.com

I want to let anyone near Tampa, FL know that I have added on a new Bible Bee camp.  The Stevensons www.getthejoy.com will be teaching wonderful Bible Bee songs as they join me August 11th - 13th for our NIV based Bible Bee camp which will meet at 10:00 - 3:00 at the North Tampa Church of Christ 3611 E. County Line Rd. Lutz, FL  33559 (approximately 5 minutes off of I-75 and Hwy 56) If you are interested in attending or would like more information, please contact Jill Cravens 813-948-3937 Jcravens3@verizon.net

Finally I want to remind you to check out my website www.scripture-memory-support.org .  There are many pages devoted to the Bible Bee as well as other Scripture memory support.  We have just finished memorizing HEBREWS.  (Please let me know if you have HEBREWS memorized and have not previously contacted me) and will, starting Nov 15th (after the 2009 Bible Bee) be, Lord willing, memorizing and encouraging others around the world to memorize  JAMES at the pace of 1 verse each day.

Four parts of the Bible Bee material I want to highlight are:

1) Bible Bee Scripture songs:

Pam True and her daughters have put many of the category 1 in the NIV songs up on youtube.  You can see them by using their youtube profile name:  kyhills7    There are other Scripture song sources in other translations listed on my site.  Many people are composing many wonderful NIV Bible Bee Scripture songs which we are using at our camp.  Thursday I heard 2 young girls in one sitting sing 37 verses from memory of Bible Bee Scripture songs we taught them!!  We are trying to figure out how best to share these with everyone.  Please pray for us in this, especially as some of us (mostly me) are still largely incompetent in using computers.

2) Bible Bee support chart:

We would like to encourage you by charting your progress.  Anyone who has memorized at least GENESIS 1:1-2 through PROVERBS 15:1-2 in Category 1 can join us.  A support chart is kept on the website and also on Facebook at

"Join me in memorizing all 1,507 (1,048 / 485) verses in the Bible Bee" www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=93153058339&ref=mf

3) Other FREE computer games:

There are some wonderful Bible Bee games listed on my website.  The most helpful that I myself use and encourage my students to often use to prepare best for the Bible Bee are:

http://elearning-games.umcrookston.edu/InterGames1/KnowMill.asp?GameID=biblebeegames_000

http://elearning-games.umcrookston.edu/InterGames1/KnowMill.asp?GameID=biblebeegames_001

which are incredible tools for mastering the Bible Knowledge questions given by the Bible Bee.

4) Mutual encouragement, support, and sharing of ideas:

I recently had someone call me arrogant for sharing these tips in mass emails, saying I should not assume that people I didn't know would want to use their valuable time to read about MY games, songs, charts, or other ideas/tips.

The email was sent to me in good taste and for my good so I did not take offense.  I can appreciate the perspective (and will gladly on request delete your email address from my lists if you would not want to receive future group emails from me.)  However, I don't share that perspective.  I don't see myself as being arrogant in sharing with you the best I have found so that you can yourself use the same tools and spread them on to others.  Rather, I see myself as obeying the golden rule of MATTHEW 7:12.  Along those lines, I would love to hear from you!!

Do you know of other Bible Bee and/or Scripture Memory resources, events, or tips I could include on the website?  What computer games are you using?  What Bible Bee Scripture songs are you singing that you would like to share?

The website is set up for you to share your ideas/tips/questions/tools/etc. with the Bible Bee community and for them to respond in mutual encouragement and edification.  We also set up a facebook group for this same purpose.  We would love for you to join us as we all embark on this Bible Bee adventure together!!

"Bible Bee - I can't wait"
www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=101543350152&ref=ts

Do you have any questions and or comments about anything in the email?  If so, I would love to hear from you.

Bowling:

More interest for bowling needed! (LC)

Karen Coleman, who has headed up homeschool bowling at Lake City Bowl for many years, says right now there is not enough interest to warrant having it -- only a handful of kids so the competition is not there.

She would like to do it if there is more interest.  Right now it is scheduled for the afternoon of the first Wed of the month.  Would a different day be better?

Sanction fees have gone up to $17 so the first month would be $26 and then it would be $9 per month.  Is that cost prohibitive for some?

We could do just a fun bowl which would be unsanctioned and the kids would not qualify for the scholarship bowling tournaments. (Our oldest son received a scholarship from the FYBA.)

Another thought is that moms could bowl as well -- either with their kids or against each other???  Any thoughts?
Karen is open to suggestions.  Please feel free to email her with ideas.

Karen Coleman mskaren16@hotmail.com or call 386-454-4299.

~Thanks.

Lab Science Camps
Jack and Sue Dunn info@genesisranch.org
www.GenesisRanch.org

Hi Florida Homeschooler!
My husband, Jack, and I came across your website in Homeschool World.  We have just started a new ministry to homeschoolers and would like to introduce ourselves to you and the families in Florida

After homeschooling our 3 daughters through high school, Jack and I discovered, first hand, the difficulties and expense of doing upper level science labs at home.  We know that other families are facing the same struggles.

We provide 3 week long Lab-Adventures in Physics, Biology, and Chemistry to Christian homeschool students nation-wide.  Each Creation based science camp, in our rural Montana home, provides approximately 34 formal lab sessions equivalent to the lab work in an average year of public school science.  We have scheduled a different lab for each month of the year starting with Physics for boys in August.  Boys and girls will come at different times.  Jack is the main teacher.  He has been a registered nurse for 20 years and has taught high school science, math, and history.  He has also taught college courses in organic chemistry and anatomy and physiology, and algebra.

Jack and I would like to enlist your help in getting the word out about our ministry.
Please peruse our website: www.GenesisRanch.org to get know us and see if this is something you could recommend to families in your area.

Thank you very much for taking the time to see what we are all about.  Let me know if you have any questions about us, and feel free to give out our email address to interested families.

Thanks again and may God bless you and your family.
Sincerely,
Susanne Dunn

Cooking Classes for Children

I am a mom and a teacher who started a business back in April called, Wee Can Cook!  I offer cooking classes for children, ages 2 1/2-8.  These classes are parent participation classes in which the children are the "Head Chefs" and parents are the "Sous Chefs."  I have a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Florida, taught for 5 years and then have been home with my own girls for 5 years.  I started this business because my older daughter had a huge interest in cooking and I could not find anything appropriate for her age in Gainesville.  All my classes are hands-on, developmentally appropriate and integrate math, science, literacy, music, health and nutrition and kitchen safety.  I offer morning and evening classes.  I would love for you to visit my website and perhaps pass my information on to other homeschool families you think may be interested.

Thank you,

Greetings,
My name is Daniel Cook and I am a cadet leader in the local Civil Air Patrol squadron. If you’re unfamiliar with us, we are, first and foremost, a community service volunteer organization. Exchange Students:

HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT?

Dawn Brown mdawnsc@aol.com or 352-316-2201

I know many of you hosted short-term students last year and had a wonderful experience.  I am a community coordinator for a program that hosts students for a 5-month or 10-month stay while they attend your local high school.  I am trying to find host families for students who hail from Norway, Hong Kong, Korea, Spain, Germany (wouldn't it be great to turn a future leader from this country into a home school advocate), Belgium, Thailand, Italy, Turkey, Switzerland, China, the Netherlands, and Slovakia.

Host families provide a bed, a place to do quiet studying, and the love and support any teenager would need. PAX exchange students have had a minimum of 3 years of English. They have their own insurance and spending money. Families can expect students to help with household chores and participate in family activities.

If you are interested in more information about hosting a student or would like to see profiles of students needing a host family please contact me.

Fencing Classes for Homeschoolers!!!

I just found out that there is a fencing class for Homeschoolers in Gainesville.  It is not advertised anywhere & I only found out because I met the owner/instructor.   My 3 kids signed up today, bringing the total in the class to 6.  Please see his website for directions: ~Heather R.
www.floridafencingacademy.com/FloridaFencingAcademy.com/Welcome.html

The class for Homeschoolers is every Friday, 9:30am-11:30am.  (He told me there is an hour of warm-up we were welcome to come to if we wanted to get there @ 8:30am)   He charges $60/mo per student, BUT, he (being a father of 5 himself) gives a discount for multiple children.... I'm not going to say what he gave me, but I will say that I'm paying 1/2 what I was going to be charged at the other place to do fencing in Jonesville, & it's for 2 hrs a week compared to their 1hr.  My kids are very excited to get starting with this, & are hoping to make some new friends.  Please come check out a class (I'm sure he'd let you come try it out before signing up).

Golf/Landscape/Forestry Lake City Community College

Welcome back and Happy New Year!

We are all having to deal with budget cuts which affects travel, but we still need to get good information to students about career opportunities where there are jobs even in our slow economy. We have jobs in the golf, landscape, and forest industries; more jobs than we can fill. We need outside oriented, college bound, management oriented students. Interestingly, the landscape industry is in dire need on managers. Our programs are:

1.       Golf Course Operations – 3 years – AS degree
2.       Landscape Technology – 2 years – AS degree
3.       Agribusiness Management – 2 years – AS degree
4.       Forest Operations – 1 year - certificate
5.       Turf Equipment Technology – 1 year – applied technology diploma

Also, remember that our AS degrees above articulate to Saint Leo on our campus so that in two more years students can earn a bachelors in business on top of our AS degree; very powerful combination!

Hello,
My name is Patricia Littrell and I am the Regional Manager with Pacific Intercultural Exchange (P.I.E.), a nonprofit educational organization.  I am working with international students coming to your community to attend local high schools in the fall.  They are in need of host families.  These students come from a variety of backgrounds and have many different interests.  I have successfully placed students with home school families many times and it has been beneficial for everyone.  The opportunity to learn about another culture, another language and another part of the world is enriching for your children as well as our students.

All students must have a family to call their own before August 30th.  I am hoping that some kind and loving families will be interested in opening up their heart and home to one of them.  There are few opportunities in this world where an individual can take an active hand in making the world a better place.  This is such an opportunity!

You can go to the following website to take a look at the teens in need of an immediate home.
Go to: http://www.pieusa.info
User Name: Family PLittrell
Password:  pie6775

There is no such thing as a typical host family!  Single-parent families, retired couples, families with young children, no children, as well as those with teenagers or who are empty-nesters have all had successful hosting experiences and embrace the opportunity to share their lives.  Host families are asked to provide a bed, meals and a loving home environment.  Students are between the ages of 15-18, come with their own personal spending money to cover such expenses as clothing, school lunches, school supplies and entertainment.  They have their own medical insurance.  Mostly, they have a lot of love to give their American family!

Thank you in advance for helping to make a dream come true!   If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact me.

Kind Regards,
Patricia Littrell

The results have spoken for themselves for the past 20 years and over 4,000 children that have come through our programs. The only problem is that even after that long and that many successes, we are one of the best kept secrets in the area.

As a Christian, non-profit ranch, we strive to help kids learn from horses all that they can teach in a family oriented, safe environment here in St Augustine. Our riding students come from as far as 60 miles away because of our programs. We also have more than a 70% return rate from our moms with a 35% plus referral rate. In short, we are time tested and mom approved!

We have recently added 2 riding instructors, both moms in their own rights, who now offer lessons during the day for home schoolers. Our summer camp program begins June 6th. We would appreciate any help you can provide by passing this on to other Home School families.

If I can answer any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask. If there is any other way we can be of service, please let us know. Thank you very much.

Lady Christendom (for young ladies) and West Point Christian Academy (for young men)

I am Lisa Hazelton, the current director of Hope Homeschoolers in Lakeland.  I just wanted to share something with you that I thought might be of interest to your group in the Gainesville area. They are programs called Lady Christendom (for young ladies) and West Point Christian Academy (for young men) run by William and Jill Roy (and their daughters) from North Carolina.  They are week-long "day camps" for students ages 8 -15.

West Point offers a comprehensive history curriculum from an unashamedly Christian Worldview, physical endurance tests, obstacle courses, marksmanship, strategy concepts, and Biblical character for young men.  These camps run from 10:00 a.m - 4:00 p.m. for the week, with a special program for families on Friday evening.

Lady Christendom offers lessons in civility and etiquette, Scripture memory, domestic cuisine skills, physical exercise, nutrition, and personal dress and modesty.  These camps run from 10:30 - 1:30 (or 3:30 with the optional extended program) for the week, with a special mother/daughter tea on Friday at lunch time.

Four of my children have participated in these camps for the past two years and have thoroughly enjoyed them!  They have learned many lessons from the Roys which they will carry with them for a lifetime.  The part I love the best is that the Roys are truly reinforcing the Christian values in which I am endeavoring to train my children, and they are such Godly role models for my children.  Their website is www.churstorian.com . If you have time, go there and go to the Character Camps section and check it out.  You will be able to see more details than I can give here.

We hope to offer these camps in Lakeland again next March, but the Roys would like to have several other camps in Florida around the same time if possible.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Roys directly at Churstorian@ntelos.net .  Also, please feel free to share this with any others you think might be interested.

Thanks for your time!
Lisa

Latin 100 (first-year high school Latin course for grades 8-12), Latin 200 (second-year high school course), and Latin 300/400 (Prose in odd years, Poetry in even years) will be offered.  The Latin program is a full 4-year program (Latin 100, 200, 300, 400) using Orberg's Lingua Latina for the first two years (students love the book!).  Online high school Latin classes meet twice weekly for a live, interactive (video & audio) session.  Students may also attend a live online "help session" once a week (optional), and ask questions via email at any time.  Students submit work online.  Students receive grades with narratives at the end of each semester, and certificates at the end of the year.  National Latin Exam fees, NJCL/COJCL fees (including National Latin Honor Society fees for those who qualify), a CD and other materials are included in tuition.  The only cost other than tuition is the Orberg text, which is usually less than $20 on amazon.com and lasts for both Latin 100 and Latin 200!

Nutrition:
Inspiring Children to Make Healthy Choices
Verna Groger, RD
Registered Dietitian and Certified Personal Trainer
www.JoyfullyFit.com  ; verna@groger.net
Home: 352-374-7907  Cell: 352-514-1305

When children learn the importance of good nutrition and exercise, they often become very proactive in taking care of their health. I have weekly Healthy Family Parties designed to equip and inspire children to go against the unhealthy tide of our society and commit to good stewardship in the area of eating and physical activity. I can provide this in my home or anywhere you like.

These events follow the following format:
I talk a little about why we need antioxidants in our diet, what they are, where they are found, and how they protect the body from disease. I tell an interactive story.

The children go into an adjoining room and play Traffic Light Eating while the moms (dads welcome also) watch Dr. William Sears' 9 Simple Steps to a Healthier Family Diet DVD (12 minutes).

I share information about a form of concentrated fruits and vegetables available in a capsule, chewable, or gummie that Dr. Sears and many other widely known physicians recommend. There is no obligation to buy.

Parents frequently find their children very motivated by what they learn and empowered to lead the family in making healthy choices.  Oftentimes, when the lessons being taught at home are reinforced by a health professional, it increases the effectiveness.

The times I'm available to do this are:
All day Friday
Saturday afternoon and evenings
Thursday evenings

Call or email if you're interested or have any questions. Refreshments will be served. If anyone would like to see the details of the story or the game, go to the Events page of my website where there are links to the PDF files.

Old Florida Museum:

Fourth Annual Florida Timeline Home School Experience (ST. AUG)

Old Florida Museum is excited to announce its Fourth Annual Florida Timeline Home School Experience on Monday, September 21, 2009. This Hands-On Home School Experience is designed to expose students to daily living activities of the Timucua Indians, the Spanish Fort Mose inhabitants, and Florida Pioneer children. This year, Old Florida Museum has added a fourth program area as well: the Archaeological Dig. Sessions will be offered from 9 AM to 1 PM, and from 1 PM to 5 PM. Cost is $13.00 per person, age four and up. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Guides will provide history and instruction in the use of tools and games from each program area. Participants will also make a take-home project in each of the four program areas. Guests can start at any point during the session time and plan to spend approximately two hours. The museum complex includes a Timucua Indian hut, a Spanish wattle and daub house, a Florida Pioneer one-room schoolhouse, and an archaeological dig tent. The museum also includes the 1800's style Old Florida General Store, featuring many unusual and old-fashioned items.

"Our home school program day has proven very popular over the years," said Tracy Suter, manager of Old Florida Museum. "We moved to a new, larger facility with expanded exhibits last spring, and have opened our archaeology program, so it will be a whole new experience for families who attend the program this year."

The Old Florida Museum is located at 259 San Marco Avenue at the corner of State Road 16 in St. Augustine, FL. Entrance is through the Old Florida General Store, which faces San Marco Avenue. Please call 904-824-8874 for reservations.
For more information about the Old Florida Museum visit our website at www.oldfloridamuseum.com or e-mail info@oldfloridamuseum.com . Join our group on Facebook for news, information, and special discounts throughout the year.

Homeschool P.E. (GNV)

Hello,
My name is Kam Bosket. I am hoping that you can spread the word about our Homeschool P.E. to your fellow homeschooling families. My company, Inspire Sports League, is offering Homeschool P.E. to the Gainesville area Homeschoolers.  The class will be on Tuesdays, at Kanapaha Park, starting in September, for grades K-8.  The class fee is economical, and sibling discounts are offered.   The focus of the P.E. class is fitness and fun.  Registration is open now at www.inspiresportsleague.com  .

As a side note about me, my family and I will be moving to Gainesville in the next month.  We are a homeschooling family, with three boys.  We have been homeschooling for five years.  We have offered a Homeschool P.E. in the Jacksonville FL area, where we currently live, for the past three years, with great success.  We are bringing our P.E. class to Gainesville, along with our other business ventures, as we love to be involved in the local Homeschool Community.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.  I appreciate any help you can provide in spreading the word to homeschooling families who may be looking for this opportunity.

Thanks in advance
Kam Bosket

Piano Lessons (GNV and surrounding area)
Eric Redmond (352) 336-6294, www.redmondmusic.net , or redmond.music@gmail.com

I'm a homeschooling father of five and have been teaching piano professionally since 1992.  My goal has been to glorify God through excellent, encouraging teaching.  Curriculum includes some music theory (why we do what we do), ear training (helps to read music or play by ear), and songs that are a fun challenge to learn and enjoyable to hear.  I emphasize different parts of this curriculum depending on the specific needs and desires of my students and their families, so talk with me about your goals for music!  I am equipped to teach styles ranging from classical to the best of contemporary music (including reading chord symbols).  My special niche is teaching interested students how to arrange hymns and praise songs to use in worship.  Many people think you must be born with the ability to arrange music, but this is not true – it can be taught (and I really enjoy teaching it ).  I can teach you in my home studio (tuition is $60/month), but the more popular option with my students has been for me to teach in their homes (with a travel fee), freeing up their schedules.

I currently have a few openings at clients' homes (start times are approximate depending on travel time):
*Monday afternoon in the Keystone/Melrose area from 1pm - 3:30
*Thursday evening in West Gainesville from 6-7pm
*Friday afternoon in Ocala from 11:30am - 2:30 pm

Cornerstone Academy Homeschool Connection
 SAT Prep Class

Homeschool Connection SAT Prep Registration Form

http://cornerstone.st/_docs/Form-HomeschoolConnection-SAT-Registration.pdf

Would you like to have someone come along side you to prepare your student for the SAT? Cornerstone is offering an SAT Prep Course (at a fraction of the cost of other small group courses offered by big name companies) to help your student prepare for Bright Futures scholarships and college applications.

The course will consist of eight 90-minute class meetings. Class will be held at Cornerstone Academy, 3401 NW 34th St. (Heritage Park) on Thursdays. The cost for the 8 week class is $90 to be paid with registration (See Registration Form above). A minimum of five students is needed for a class.

About the Course: Thursdays, Sept. 17 to Thursday, November 19, 2009 (8 class meetings - no meeting on Oct. 15)
Time: 10:30 am to 12 noon. (Alternate time is 2:30 pm to 4 pm Thursdays. Please let me know your preference.)

This course is designed for homeschooled students preparing to take the SAT for admission to college and/or Bright Futures eligibility. The course will be customized for you personally. You will meet with me in a small group setting for 90-minutes weekly. Class time will be devoted to analyzing and strengthening weak areas, learning test taking strategies, and any necessary review of concepts. You will first be assessed on all three components (critical reading, math and writing), by taking a practice SAT test. Assignments will then be customized for you to work especially in the areas that you desire to improve. If you plan to take the PSAT test on October 17th, this class will prepare you for that test, too. Speech:

IMPACT Speech and Debate Club (GNV)

Shared by: Mardy Freeman

Hi Everyone!  I'm sending a quick note out to to let you all know about a really wonderful opportunity that our kids have participated in for the past few years: the IMPACT Speech and Debate Club here in Gainesville.  I can't say enough good about it, really.  It's run by Susan Minchin and her children, Joy, Joshua and Minch.  These young people are all speech and debate winners on the state and national level and they have a desire to share their skills with other young people.  The Minchin kids strive to keep a sweet spirit of Christian love and team-like camaraderie, where students feel more comfortable learning and practicing speeches together.

However, students will have opportunities to compete in regional events if they like.  We've had a student who went on to place fourth at a regional event (one place shy of being able to compete at national level), and sometimes a child will place lower, or sometimes not win anything at all. We've even had a couple of students who attend club but decided not to compete.  ALL of the kids were glad they were a part of IMPACT.  They learned, and were given a platform to practice, very good public speaking skills - the best, really.  And they had a lot of fun.  So much that our caboose Joel (14) just signed up for another year.

Here are the details:

IMPACT Speech and Debate Club (GNV)

Joy Minchin: joyousservant@gmail.com  or (352) 222-2877 or www.freewebs.com/gainesville_impact

Gainesville IMPACT Speech and Debate Club will be kicking off the 2009-2010 season soon! We plan to hold an informal, informational meeting at 3:00 in the afternoon on Friday, August 28th, at Antioch Baptist Church (visit our website for the church address). Club meetings will begin on Monday, September 14th from 2:00 - 6:00.

The purpose of our club is to equip young people with communication skills and build character in their lives so that they can glorify God and make an impact in their world. "And who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?"

We would love to help your family improve their communication! If you have any questions or would like to know more, please visit our website, e-mail me or give me a call.

Read G. A. Henty Online

Hello,

My name is Zachary Miller, and I was homeschooled almost all my life. One of my favorite things to do in my free time was to read all the books by G. A. Henty. The only thing is, I never actually read ALL the books, because my family could not afford to buy them all.

Henty books are one of the most popular book series with homeschoolers, and are one of the best ways to learn history, but should families really have to pay over $1200 just to read them all? Well, I don’t think so, and that’s why I started the company G. A. Henty Online. What we do is provide a way for families to be able to enjoy some of the greatest historical fiction novels of all time, without breaking the bank. In fact, we are the only company in the world that can provide you with some of the rarest stories Henty ever wrote.

You can find out more about what we offer at: www.gahentyonline.com

Christian-owned Horse Magazine

Hi there!
My name is Mandee Widrick and I am the editor of a Christian-owned horse magazine based out of NY. Being a homeschool graduate myself, I would like to introduce to you Bit & Bridle, as I believe it may be of interest to your homeschool group. This magazine is not only great for young horse owners, but it is also directed at those who aren't fortunate enough to have their own horse. We feature interviews with top horsemen such as Lew Sterrett and John Lyons, advice from certified veterinarians and other professionals, subscriber interaction and contests, fictional and true stories, and much more. We are also now accepting freelance submissions from young writers and photographers over the age of 16. The website is www.bitandbridlemag.com for anyone who would like more information. This magazine prints bi-monthly, and subscriptions are available for $15 (US funds) per year. (Sample issues are $3 each and available by request.)

Advertising space is also available for business owners, starting at only $30 per issue.

Sincerely,
Mandee Widrick

Website to Check Reading Level

www.arbookfind.com (click on “advanced search”)

This is a website designed for the Accelerated Reader program for public schools. The students read books and then take an online test for comprehension. They earn points if they pass the test and the school receives some kind of reward for the points the students earn. We don’t participate in the program, but I have found the website helpful for checking on the approximate reading level for books we read. You can query the database by title, author or reading level. The reading levels are by grade, by month. For example 3.4 would be third grade, fourth month. Of course the reading levels are somewhat subjective so I would only use it as a guide and not a diagnostic tool.

We are especially thrilled about this new book since our 15 yr old daughter is the co-author and illustrator - and she has just done an outstanding job of it. We are so proud of her!
(Amazing what these homeschoolers can do, isn't it?)

All the extra goodies we've got lined up to celebrate the release of this new book will only be available for a  short time... so please consider adding this book to your Christmas list now - or get it so you'll be ready for "back to school" time in January.
These are just too good to pass up!

Time Out--To Fill YOUR Cup!
Parched? Dry? Weary in your well doing? You are not alone!  Studies overwhelmingly show that today’s Christian woman is busier than ever balancing more demands than ever before!  The typical Christian woman balances a wide variety of demands ranging from marriage to mothering to homemaking to homeschooling to home-business/career to ministry, in addition to somehow fitting in time to develop and deepen her relationship with the Lord ..

Above Rubies

Recipes for Health (on left-hand side) - Our Daily Bread

"Prior to the 1900;s most flour was milled locally and bread was baked at home. God designed the wheat kernel, as well as other grains, to perfectly store the nutrients within. Once broken open, as in milling, the nutrients immediately begin to oxidize. Within about 72 hours, 90 per cent of over 30 nutrients are virtually gone. Since the germ oil causes the flour to turn rancid very quickly, only enough grain was ground each day to meet the needs of the community. This meant that just about every family was gathering their manna daily."

For all homeschoolers!

This curriculum library is housed at Pinegrove Baptist Church along with Lena Bush's library.  Both libraries are Lena's ministry to homeschooling families.

The hours are the same as her library and just kindly ask about being able to go in a browse around.  It has been straightened up lately, although it still needs some work, I believe one can find something in there better now!  :-)

Also, when you leave ... please let Lena know you are done as she has to lock up that other building!  Thanks!!

Please put your name on the sign out sheet along with the books you borrowed.  And when you return the books, please put a line through your name.  You may check items out as long as you need.

When you bring items back, please re-shelve.  If time does not permit you to do this, please put your name on the bag you brought the books in so your name can be crossed out.  Thanks so much!

Christmas Wishlist Idea

Kolleen Heck heckjunk@bellsouth.net

I have been trying to think of a way that so many things could be done a little different at our house this Christmas. I haven’t been able to get our son to give up some of his toys for others. This year money is tighter for most everyone. I was thinking if we could each make Christmas lists of things that you want to bless your family with, but can’t afford to this year. You can dream as big as a piano and as small as a Lego.

It would give all of us a chance to help fill the Christmas list of eachother, with items we have in our own homes. If Caleb, our son saw that someone really could use an item, he would be able to meet that need with a more giving heart. Usually we try to donate items to the used stores, but then if it doesn’t sell he sees it and it makes him sad, this way he knows it will bless someone.

I was thinking we all have books we have read and don’t need anymore, DVD’s, crafts we will never finish, clothes that would bless someone’s children or tools your husband would consider giving to another husband if we knew the need of another who could use it.

We all have strange nick knacks that maybe would be something a grandparent collects that you could give to someone.
For example: Caleb loves Rescue Heroes, I’d like to give my husband a Godly book with humor. My mother-in-law loves Christmas (Santas from around the world), my sister in law loves Cows....Caleb keeps eyeballing a new game, but I think full price for a year or less using it, I would rather find it used.

Another thing we do. We are the type of family that has Santa on the side. So, some of the more used items we get, I place them together and declare them: "From the island of misfit toys."

I guess I am thinking a couple of different things ... we as a family can bless someone else, my attic isn’t really considered being a good steward or the closet in mothballs, blessing others is like storing treasures in heaven, letting others know a need or a want is okay, God doesn’t mind His children asking for help.  Sometimes we think it must be selfish to ask for something. It was mentioned that people are willing to give, but have a hard time asking.  But the truth I have found is it is sad to deny someone else the blessing of blessing us.

***

Here's the plan, if you could send me your Christmas wishlist (it could also be for down the road a birthday gift), sizes, colors, whatever details you need to include to help us all find these items in our own homes, and email it to me, Kolleen  Attention:  Christmas List at heckjunk@bellsouth.net ... I can then give Juli (Titus 2 Homeschoolers Newsletter) a collective list for her to send out.  We would need your email address and phone numbers.  You can then notify the person from the list you could bless and set up a way to get the item to them.

Thanks for listening.

~Kolleen

Looking for a Sponsor

Yhonny lives North of La Paz in a very remote area. Many homes don't even have running water and electricity. Yhonny doesn't have a father in the home and he has 3 siblings. Average income in this area is about $114/month. I sponsor a child in that same student center.

Sponsoring him involves:

1. Praying for him.
2. Writing him a letter of encouragement from time to time.
3. $38/month.

The order that I wrote this in is the right order. The prayers and the letters are far more important than the $38. The reason being is that the children really love their sponsors and they really look for the letters from the sponsors.

I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone may have.

This is an interview, that I did with the President of Compassion. It also provides a lot of information

LEGISLATIVE/ POLITICAL

Parental Rights.org

Back in July, we held a phone blitz campaign and gathered 7 new House cosponsors and 1 new senator. Over the last two weeks, we picked up 7 new House cosponsors and TWO new senators. This puts us over 120 cosponsors in the U.S. House, along with 6 senators.
This success is because we haven’t been just sitting around since July. We are constantly increasing our numbers, so that we can persuade even the tougher congressmen to get onboard.

Brenda Dickinson
President, The Home Education Foundation

Dear Home Educators:
I am extremely sorry to report to you that Gov. Crist did not appoint Florida Senator Daniel Webster to the US Senate seat vacated by Sen. Mel Martinez.

I am forwarding you the message from the Governor's Office about his appointee. (below)

Thank you for your calls to support Florida Senator Daniel Webster.

Brenda

**************

August 28, 2009

Dear Friends,

The process of selecting a United States Senator has been guided by the intent to select someone of great honor and integrity, who also has demonstrated a commitment to serve the people of our state.

I am grateful to the Floridians we considered for this appointment – for their service in their respective capacities, and for their patience with this process. They are honorable men and women of great distinction, and I thank them all for their wisdom and their candor.

I am also grateful to Senator Mel Martinez for his years of service to our great state. His is a story that illustrates the American Dream for so many in this country and around the world. I wish him and his family well as he transitions back into private life.

The guiding principle of my career, my campaigns, and our administration has been public service. I have had the great honor to work with so many hard working public servants who choose to put service above self in ways that inspire and encourage me to continue my commitment to the people each and every day.

So many of the individuals who serve in our administration sacrifice time with their families and financial opportunities in the private sector to give back to the very communities that nurtured their upbringing in our great state and around the country.

George LeMieux has been a tremendous example of this very type of commitment. When the private sector first called, George chose the path of public service – to first serve as Deputy Attorney General, and then as Chief of Staff in our administration.

I am proud to inform you today that I am appointing former Deputy Attorney General George LeMieux to the United States Senate where he will serve the remainder of Senator Mel Martinez's term.

He has argued before the United States Supreme Court and played an integral role in the creation of the Florida Cyber Crime Unit. He was instrumental in developing legislation to provide handheld devices to protect our children and to improve higher education for our students.

He has built a beautiful family with his wife Meike and their three wonderful boys – all while fighting for Florida's families, small business owners and seniors.

May God bless you and the great state of Florida.

North Central Florida 9-12 Project

Tami Nelson ablebreeze@windstream.net

Hi,
I've recently become involved in a non-partisan group and wanted to let people know about it. It's the North Central Florida chapter of the 9-12 project. The idea is to get Americans to hold Congress to the Constitution and remind them they work for the American people and the American people don't work for them. This is a good way to get children familiar with how interactions between everyday people and our legislature is supposed to happen and give them first hand experience in doing so.

This group doesn't tell anyone how to vote or what to believe. They simply want to help get Americans involved in the legislative process as they were intended to be. Everything is done peacefully through legal channels.

Below are excerpts from their 4th of July flier.

Looking for a Little Common Sense?
Are you concerned about big government and out of control spending? Does government controlled health care and nationalized corporations upset you? Have you ever felt like you're the only one in your community that sees what's happening to America? Well, you’re not alone!

Many Americans understand that Washington has grown too large. Many times it seems that the political solution is the problem. No more. Our Founders knew the solution, and it is "We the People". They spelled it out in our Constitution that is being trampled daily in Washington.

Our group is organized by people who have core values, principles and a sincere belief in America's greatness stemming from our Constitution. We are a non-partisan group that is a safe haven for patriots to organize, educate and mobilize around their shared values and principles and then move to action. We are not a political group, we are just patriots who care and want a voice.
If you live in North Central Florida and share the following principles and values, join our group today!

The 12 Values

* Honesty * Moderation * Reverence * Hard Work * Hope * Courage

* Thrift * Personal Responsibility * Humility * Gratitude * Charity * Sincerity

9 Principles (from the US Constitution)
1. America Is Good.

2. I believe in God and He is the Center of my Life.

3. I must always try to be a more honest person than I was yesterday.

4. The family is sacred. My spouse and I are the ultimate authority, not the government.

5. If you break the law you pay the penalty. Justice is blind and no one is above it.

6. I have a right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, but there is no guarantee of equal results

7. I work hard for what I have and I will share it with who I want to. Government cannot force me to be charitable.

8. It is not un-American for me to disagree with authority or to share my personal opinion.

9. The government works for me. I do not answer to them, they answer to me.

MONITORING THE U.N. CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD
www.parentalrights.org

If this treaty is ratified:

·        The laws of all 50 states on children and parents would be superseded by this international law by virtue of a specific provision of the US Constitution which expressly declares treaties to be supreme over state law. Virtually all law on children and parents is state law.

·        Good parents would no longer be entitled to the legal presumption that they act in the best interests of their children. Instead, the government would have the authority to overrule all parents on any decision concerning the child if the government believed it could make a better decision.

·        Parents could no longer spank their children.

·        Children would have the legal right to choose their own religion. Parents would be permitted only to give advice.

·        America would be under a binding legal obligation to massively increase its federal spending on children’s programs.

We need the: THE PARENTAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT

SECTION 1
The liberty of parents to direct the upbringing and education of their children is a fundamental right.

SECTION 2
Neither the United States nor any State shall infringe upon this right without demonstrating that its governmental interest as applied to the person is of the highest order and not otherwise served.

SECTION 3
No treaty may be adopted nor shall any source of international law be employed to supersede, modify, interpret, or apply to the rights guaranteed by this article.

Why we need The Parental Rights Amendment:

HEF

Brenda Dickinson
President, The Home Education Foundation
www.flhef.org

HEF has been working hand-in-hand with officials from the NCAA to ensure a smooth eligibility process for students wishing to participate in competitive athletics through the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The following Q & A will be posted on the HEF website (http://www.flhef.org ).

Answers to NCAA Eligibility Questions

If a student athlete is talented enough to play at the college level, it is very important to become very familiar with the NCAA website at least when the student enters 8th grade, if not before.  The requirements are very strict and failing to meet those requirements could deny a star athlete eligibility to play college sports and receive a scholarship.  The NCAA Eligibility website is very helpful.  (www.ncaa.org ) Go to Academics & Athletes, then click on NCAA Eligibility Center.

Home educated students must meet the same academic requirements as other students, although the documentation is a little different.  The academic requirements and other information are on the NCAA website.  However, additional questions to those on the website come up from time to time for home education students.  Because home education students have so many choices and paths to achieve their educational goals, they don't always fit the mold for public or private school students. Therefore, the HEF has asked the following questions and answers which have been approved by the NCAA in order to provide parents more information.

1.  Can courses taken in the 8th grade count toward the NCAA required core courses?

Yes, if the course satisfies the core course requirement and is an approved high school course.  The course must be:
Algebra or above
Biology, physical science or above
English if it can be proved that the course is a college-prep course level

2.  Will the NCAA accept Credit by Exam?
No.

3.  How can home educated students document their coursework?

The NCAA will want to know the textbooks and publishers for each course taken.  They will accept Rosetta Stone for foreign language if done at home.  However, Florida colleges will not accept a foreign language taken at home.  It must be through a public or private school or through dual enrollment.

4.  Can a student have too many credits on the high school transcript?

There is no cap on the number of credits a student can earn.  The NCAA only considers the required core courses for determining eligibility and grade point average.  At this time, Division 1 requires 16 core courses and Division II requires 14, but on August 1, 2013, Division II will also begin requiring 16 core courses.  See the NCAA website for specific requirements.

5.  May college courses count as core courses? College courses may be used to satisfy core-curriculum requirements if the courses are accepted and are awarded credit by the high school (or in a home education program) for any student and meets all other requirements for core courses.

For NCAA Division I only, such courses must be placed on the student's high school transcript. Courses taken at a college will NOT appear on the high school's NCAA List of Approved Core Courses. The high school's NCAA List of Approved Core Courses will include only those courses taught/offered by the high school.

6.  How would a home education parent know if the college courses taken through dual enrollment satisfy the NCAA core-curriculum requirements?

Florida students who take dual enrollment courses can view the Dual Enrollment Course/High School Equivalency List on the FL Dept. of Education website at http://files.facts.usf.edu/AdvisingManuals/Dual_Enrollment_List_2008.pdf

This list equates the college course content to the content of high school courses.  The course codes for college courses and high school courses are specified on this list.  The Florida Department of Education Office of Articulation has examined the content of each course, as required by law, to establish this approved list.  It is used by public and private schools to determine if a dual enrollment course meets the high school graduation requirement.

7.  Can a high school student take too many college courses?

Not if the courses are taken concurrently in the high school or in a home education program.  A student can even earn an AA degree as long as the courses are taken part-time through dual enrollment.  The college eligibility clock starts running the moment a student is enrolled full-time in college.

Caution:  High school students need to know how the college is classifying them.  Early admission programs may classify the student as a full-time college student, even though the student has not completed home education. This would cause the college clock to start running and the student would loose a year of eligibility.

8.  How many years of college eligibility does a student who has completed an AA degree have?

Generally, if a student has never been classified as a full-time college, the student has 5 years in a Division I college and 10 semesters in Division II or III colleges to complete 4 seasons. However, to guarantee accurate information in each situation, student-athletes and/or their parents are urged to contact NCAA Membership Service at 317-917-6000, Monday-Friday, from Noon to 4:00 pm to obtain official information about individual eligibility.  NCAA will be glad to advise and answer specific questions.

The Fourth Amendment's Impact on Child Abuse Investigations

Michael P. Farris
President, Patrick Henry College
Chairman, Home School Legal Defense Association

The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit said it best, "The government's interest in the welfare of children embraces not only protecting children from physical abuse, but also protecting children's interest in the privacy and dignity of their homes and in the lawfully exercised authority of their parents." Calabretta v. Floyd, 189 F.3d 808 (1999).

This statement came in a case which held that social workers who, in pursuit of a child abuse investigation, invaded a family home without a warrant violate the Fourth Amendment rights of both children and parents. Upon remand for the damages phase of the trial, the social workers, the police officers, and the governments that employed them settled this civil rights case for $150,000.

The 4th Amendment Applies to Social Workers

Volume 44, Program 8
4/2/2003

Is it legal for social workers to come into your home without a search warrant? Today on Home School Heartbeat Mike Smith talks with HSLDA's litigation attorney Jim Mason about the 4th Amendment.

Mike:
Jim, it seems that social workers in the Stumbo case thought the constitution didn't apply to them. Does the 4th amendment apply to social workers? And if so why is it important that they recognize this?

Jim:
Mike, most emphatically the 4th amendment applies to social workers. The 4th amendment says that the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers and affects against unreasonable searches and seizures shall not be violated. The 4th amendment applies to all state actors. It doesn't say that it doesn't apply to social workers. When social workers come out to investigate an allegation of abuse or neglect, they are under the exact same requirements as police officers investigating crime. It's important that they understand that because when a social worker comes out to the house, they are intruding into one of the most important areas of our lives--our homes and our families. That's the very heart of what the 4th amendment was intended to protect. And social workers while they have an important role in finding child abuse and neglect cases, they can't run rough shod over the
rights of people.

Mike:
Well, Jim was you know HSLDA has committed a lot of time to making this a reality. That is that social workers have to realize that the 4th Amendment to the Constitution applies to them and other government workers. And until next time, I'm Mike Smith.

Practical Ways to Reform the Child Welfare System

In recent years it has become frighteningly common for homeschoolers to be wrongfully accused of abuse and neglect on hotlines to state child welfare departments.
