URGENT CALL TO PRAYER
Hello Friends,
Would you please pray for the National Bible Bee, which will be held during
the first week of November in
Your prayers are truly needed for this FIRST-EVER event!!!
In Jesus' Love,
~ Peters Family
Dear Bible Bee Contestant Families, Volunteers, and Friends,
As most of you know, we are less than two weeks away from the 2009
National Bible Bee Contest in
We have a number of volunteer roles to fill (judges, proctors, runners, prayer
warriors, etc.) and we need to have all of our volunteers signed up by October
30th (but preferably this week), so we appreciate your fervent prayers on our
behalf.
Please pray that God will open up the floodgates and bring in all the volunteers
that are needed to carry out this inaugural event. It is our desire
to equip children and youth to be ambassadors for Jesus Christ as they learn,
speak, and live out God’s Word. Help us turn this nation back to God by
joining us in intercessory prayer as we prepare to boldly proclaim God’s Word
in our nation’s Capitol!

In Memoriam: Chris Klicka
4-2-1961 – 10-12-2009
A longtime champion of
homeschooling rights around the globe, Home School Legal Defense Association
Senior Counsel and Director of State and International Relations Christopher J.
Klicka was called home by his Lord on October 12, 2009, at age 48, following a
15-year battle with multiple sclerosis. An attorney, spokesman, lobbyist, and
homeschooling husband and father, Chris is survived by his wife, Tracy, their
seven children (ages 11–21), and his parents, Ardath and George Klicka.
“Chris was both a people
person and a goal person. He cared deeply about people, but was also driven to
always do more!” says HSLDA President J. Michael Smith. “He was the most
determined person I ever met in my life. Even with all the things he
accomplished every day at HSLDA, he continually wanted to tackle new challenges
and serve homeschoolers in more and better ways. He was so focused on the
homeschooling world, but he was also very much focused on his family and
dedicated to raising his children.”
An integral part of Home
School Legal Defense Association’s staff for 24 years, Chris was HSLDA’s first
full-time employee, first executive director, and first full-time attorney. He
believed passionately that homeschooling was the best educational method for
children and demonstrated that passion in every area of his life.
Chris and Tracy
homeschooled all seven of their children. He traveled across the
Even deeper than his
passion for homeschooling was his deep love for his Lord. We may never know how
many people Chris inspired to homeschool or continue homeschooling, or how many
people he inspired to draw near to his Lord.
“Chris’s accomplishments
as a lawyer for homeschooling are clear and of value that cannot be overstated.
He was one of the most important pioneers of our movement,” says HSLDA Chairman
Mike Farris. “He believed that this truly is God’s way to teach children to
love God. He believed it deeply. His conviction was infectious. He was a man of
single-hearted devotion that I have never, ever seen equaled. The passion that
Chris felt for the mission to which God called him never, ever, ever, ever
dimmed, even slightly.”
HSLDA deeply appreciates
and honors Chris’s life and his dedicated contribution to our organization and
to homeschooling. Our staff will miss him more than we can express, and we are praying
with and for his family. The homeschooling movement has lost one of its
greatest advocates and friends, but Chris leaves an incredible legacy of
freedom and awareness of homeschooling to the thousands of homeschooled
students whose parents have made The Right Choice.
”I have fought the good
fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store
for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will
award to me on that day-and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for
his appearing.“ II Timothy 4:7-8
”Be faithful, even to
the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life.“ Revelation 2:10

"And
David said ... Is there not a cause?" (1 Samuel 17:29). If you're
like me you have probably struggled with apparently insurmountable
obstacles. David challenges us so many years later with his words and his
example to look beyond the obstacle to the Almighty God.
Praises:
1. We praise God for providing a substantial increase in special giving
and two honorariums toward Steve and Maxine's personal support in
September. These were welcome blessings and have brought our support
account current.
2. We praise the Lord for an answer to a previous prayer request on
whether to pay for the opportunity to teach Good News Clubs in certain public
schools. Our oversight committee decided that we would not pay for access
to provide a free service. We will instead switch our focus to venues
where we are more welcome at this time.
3. We praise the Lord that Good News Clubs are beginning this week.
4. We praise the Lord for providing some volunteers to serve with us at
the 1890's Day in McIntosh on October 24th.
Prayers:
1. Will you continue to pray with us for wisdom to know who to call and
how hard to push as we seek to increase the number of Good News Clubs?
2. Will you pray with us that God will provide additional, dedicated team
members willing to be trained and to go with us to teach the children? (The
harvest fields surround us. They include the Good News Clubs and the
1890's Day.)
3. Will you pray with us for a fresh anointing and a passion like David's
to face the giants?
4. Will you pray for increases in support for Steve and Cheri Westbrooks
and the costs of ministry overhead?
We appreciate your faithful prayers! You are a blessing to us and the
children! May God continue to bless you!

Heartstrings and Bright Lights (LC)
Stephanie Johns 386-755-5520 or tsjohns@comcast.net
Heartstrings is a meeting to encourage homeschool moms.
We meet the last Tuesday
(Except Nov. & Dec.) of each month from 7:00-9:00 at the home of Sherry Miller
in
For directions, call 386 755-5520 or email tsjohns@comcast.net
We will be sharing testimonies this year of what God is doing in our families.
This group shares a common thread that we all desire to be the wife and mom God
wants us to be.
We realize that it is God who is working in us and He alone can transform us
and in so doing will also tranform our homes and families into what He desires
them to be.
We gain much by coming together and encouraging one another as we walk along
this path together.
Bring a friend and a snack to share.
Bright Lights meets at the same time and is for girls ages 10 and up. Please
bring your Bible and book. We will place a book order after the first
meeting. We will have two classes this year.
Bright Lights is a discipleship program by Sarah Malley.
The purpose is...
1.To encourage the pursuit of
godliness
2.To provide positive peer influence
and accountability
3.To have a group which can be a
team to minister to others
What is a “bright
light”? It is a girl who knows how to respond just right to people and
circumstances. It is a girl who has Biblical convictions and commitments, and
is able to go through her teenage years strong for the Lord without stumbling
as many do. It is a girl who touches the lives of others by her servant’s
spirit and the message of eternal life through Jesus Christ. God wants bright
lights! There is a great need for more of them in this generation of darkness.

Hello
Homeschool Moms,
We had a great meeting last month. Thank you for coming and sharing with
us. It was fun to talk about the "best and worst" aspects of
homeschooling. It was good to laugh together and encourage one another
along.
Our next two meetings will be moved to the third Tuesday of the
month. So we will meet on Tuesday, October
20th and Tuesday, November 17th.
Please pass this date change on to anyone who may want to come. All are
welcome. We will be meeting at Sherry Miller's home. Bright Lights-the
discipleship program for girls ages 10 and up will meet during
Heartstrings as usual on the dates above.
In January, we will resume meeting on the last Tuesday of the month. I
hope you are having a great week and hope to see you next week!

The heart of Mom's Meetings is definitely encouragement, but there is also
instruction, fellowship, food and fun. Women from many different churches and

as finding time for prayer, strengthening marriage, becoming a better parent by
understanding ourselves and our children better, handling adversity, difficult
relationships, and learning ways to develop Christian character in our lives so
we can be a better example to those around us.

a table upon arrival (someone will be in the general meeting room to show you
where they’re kept). You can remain at your table from 6 to 7, or post a
child or a friend at your table while you attend a class, or just leave your
books with prices marked and a basket for folks to pay – whatever works best
for you. You may continue to sell after the meeting (from about 8:30-ish)
until folks leave (by 10:00). You’ll just need to put your table away at
the end of the night, and take any unsold books with you. Reservations
are required and will be taken on a first-reserve basis. Folks who don’t
make the first 6 on one month will go to the top of the list for the next

Do you and your kids need some fellowship and fun in your homeschool
schedule? If so, we would like to invite you to attend the Joy Fellowship
Group, meeting the first and third Fridays of the month, from 1:00 till
3:00.
We will meet at rotating places in the High Springs/Alachua area. The
main purpose of this group is fellowship! We want to keep Christ the
center of what we do, so this homeschool fellowship group is decidedly
Christian (though we may have different churches!). If you would like to
have some fun seasonal parties, (Thanksgiving, Christmas), maybe field trips
and also some fun “light” studies on chosen particular subjects, science,
history or ??, let’s work together and have some fun with our children.
Mom's, we will have a coffee/tea time during fellowship/planning.
Ages: wide open here, I personally have a high school teenager (she will
probably bring schoolwork), a 9 year old son and 2 year old daughter, so all
ages are welcome, but we will probably have activities focused on the
elementary ages. If you have older ones like me, they can use this time for a
study group. Mom’s if you have a great homeschool curriculum book that
you have found, want to tell about or do an activity from, bring that too, so
we can learn from each other.

Art in the Park (GNV)
Jane Gravois flcreate@yahoo.com
or 352-318-8921
Greetings!
I hope that everyone has had a good summer! I have been working hard to develop
this year’s Art in the Park classes. The visual arts allow students to express
themselves in visual form. Learning to see the world around them and putting
these ideas into 2 and 3-dimensional forms is an exciting process. Working with
various materials, practicing old and new skills, learning the language of art,
creating, viewing and discussing the work of artists…all these processes help
the student develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills and an
appreciation for what art is and can be.
Please look over the new class descriptions and see if you
would like to join me in an exploration of art and its processes. Please note
there are two age level classes. (Some are similar-some more advanced skills)
Then use the sign-up sheet below by clicking reply (or copy
and paste into new e-mail), filling in your child or children’s names and
checking off the classes you have chosen.
Also is a registration form. Please print it out, fill it
in and bring it with your payment to the first class.
Thank you and please call or email if you have any questions!

Bible Bee/Scripture memory programs + New camp in FL
In Christ, Phil Walker (845)416-8010 or philjohn1558@yahoo.com
Hi. Even though most of this email will most benefit those participating
in this first National 2009 Bible Bee www.biblebee.org
, or planning to join next year's 2010 Bible Bee, I wanted to send this out to
a wider audience since the main featured computer program is something I
believe everyone interested in learning/memorizing Scripture would want to look
into and consider using.
National Bible Bee headquarters has asked everyone who sends out unofficial
helpful tips for the Bible Bee to include the following disclaimer:
Important: These materials are NOT official Bible Bee study materials and
have NOT been reviewed for accuracy by The Shelby Kennedy Foundation. It is the
responsibility of contestants and their families carefully to review the
content of these study materials before using them. The Shelby Kennedy
Foundation and the creator of these study materials are not responsible for
inaccurate answers given by contestants in the Bible Bee Competition. Bible Bee
Quiz Cards contain the official questions and answers for this year's
Competition and will be considered the final standard for determining whether a
contestant's answer is correct or incorrect.
I praise God for Keith Smith using his talent with computers to encourage,
equip, and inspire us to memorize Scripture. Some of you involved with
Bible Bowl or various Bible Quizzing leagues may have already used his
material. I was thrilled to discover that Keith has made a version
specifically for the 2009 Bible Bee. I am daily using his program and
believe it will benefit me greatly in my goal to memorize all 1,507 verses in
this year's Bible Bee. These verses are broken down into 4 categories so
those who want to use the program to memorize less verses can easily adapt.
I am using the program at each of my Bible Bee camps. This past week I
spread the game to my students at
Below is Keith's description of how the program works. I encourage you to
check out the program on his website and then feel free to email him directly
with any questions you may have using smith.keithc@gmail.com
.
"Bible Bee Quiz-Pro is a unique game over the Bible Bee questions and
memory verses. It can be used to memorize the verses chronologically, and also
as a quiz over your knowledge of the verses! The object is to complete the
verse from a list of words displayed on the screen. You try to complete as many
verses as you can in 5 minutes, and in the process accumulate the highest
score. Scores can be optionally posted to the internet so that you can compete
against others from around the nation! System requirements: Windows XP or
Those who want to use the Bible Bee Quiz-Pro can purchase the program for
single family use (allowed to be copied on multiple family computers in the
same household) directly through the website. Christian schools and other
institutions can purchase licences to download the program on multiple
computers on their complex. I have purchased a licence for my school ULCS
in Clinton Corners, NY and also for my new school HCA in Hannibal, MO and am
very excited to see the impact this will have both in helping them excell at
the Bible Bee, and much more importantly in helping them discover, trust, love,
and serve the God of Scripture for all eternity.
I would also like to endorse another computer tool out there. Greg
Leininger has created "Memorize His Word" which features a tool to
help make memorizing fun and easy and also a support system to help you reach
your custom made memorizing goals. I will be using his program at my new
school in Hannibal, MO and encourage you to check out www.memorizehisword.com
I want to let anyone near Tampa, FL know that I have added on a new Bible Bee
camp. The Stevensons www.getthejoy.com
will be teaching wonderful Bible Bee songs as they join me August 11th - 13th
for our NIV based Bible Bee camp which will meet at 10:00 - 3:00 at the North
Tampa Church of Christ 3611 E. County Line Rd. Lutz, FL 33559
(approximately 5 minutes off of I-75 and Hwy 56) If you are interested in
attending or would like more information, please contact Jill Cravens
813-948-3937 Jcravens3@verizon.net
Finally I want to remind you to check out my website www.scripture-memory-support.org
. There are many pages devoted to the Bible Bee as well as other
Scripture memory support. We have just finished memorizing HEBREWS.
(Please let me know if you have HEBREWS memorized and have not previously
contacted me) and will, starting Nov 15th (after the 2009 Bible Bee) be, Lord
willing, memorizing and encouraging others around the world to memorize
JAMES at the pace of 1 verse each day.
Four parts of the Bible Bee material I want to highlight are:
1) Bible Bee Scripture songs:
Pam True and her daughters
have put many of the category 1 in the NIV songs up on youtube. You can
see them by using their youtube profile name: kyhills7
There are other Scripture song sources in other translations listed on my
site. Many people are composing many wonderful NIV Bible Bee Scripture
songs which we are using at our camp. Thursday I heard 2 young girls in
one sitting sing 37 verses from memory of Bible Bee Scripture songs we taught
them!! We are trying to figure out how best to share these with
everyone. Please pray for us in this, especially as some of us (mostly
me) are still largely incompetent in using computers.
2) Bible Bee support chart:
We would like to encourage you
by charting your progress. Anyone who has memorized at least GENESIS
1:1-2 through PROVERBS 15:1-2 in Category 1 can join us. A support chart
is kept on the website and also on Facebook at
"Join me in memorizing all 1,507 (1,048 / 485) verses in the Bible
Bee" www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=93153058339&ref=mf
3) Other FREE computer games:
There are some wonderful
Bible Bee games listed on my website. The most helpful that I myself use
and encourage my students to often use to prepare best for the Bible Bee are:
http://elearning-games.umcrookston.edu/InterGames1/KnowMill.asp?GameID=biblebeegames_000
http://elearning-games.umcrookston.edu/InterGames1/KnowMill.asp?GameID=biblebeegames_001
which are incredible tools for mastering the Bible Knowledge questions given by
the Bible Bee.
4) Mutual encouragement, support, and sharing of ideas:
I recently had someone call
me arrogant for sharing these tips in mass emails, saying I should not assume
that people I didn't know would want to use their valuable time to read about
MY games, songs, charts, or other ideas/tips.
The email was sent to me in good taste and for my good so I did not take
offense. I can appreciate the perspective (and will gladly on request delete
your email address from my lists if you would not want to receive future group
emails from me.) However, I don't share that perspective. I don't
see myself as being arrogant in sharing with you the best I have found so that
you can yourself use the same tools and spread them on to others. Rather,
I see myself as obeying the golden rule of MATTHEW 7:12. Along those
lines, I would love to hear from you!!
Do you know of other Bible Bee and/or Scripture Memory resources, events, or
tips I could include on the website? What computer games are you
using? What Bible Bee Scripture songs are you singing that you would like
to share?
The website is set up for you to share your
ideas/tips/questions/tools/etc. with the Bible Bee community and for them
to respond in mutual encouragement and edification. We also set up a
facebook group for this same purpose. We would love for you to join us as
we all embark on this Bible Bee adventure together!!
"Bible Bee - I can't wait"
www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=101543350152&ref=ts
Do you have any questions and or comments about anything in the email? If
so, I would love to hear from you.

Bowling:
More interest for bowling needed! (LC)
Karen Coleman, who has headed up homeschool bowling at Lake City Bowl for many
years, says right now there is not enough interest to warrant having it -- only
a handful of kids so the competition is not there.
She would like to do it if
there is more interest. Right now it is scheduled for the afternoon of
the first Wed of the month. Would a different day be better?
Sanction fees have gone up
to $17 so the first month would be $26 and then it would be $9 per month.
Is that cost prohibitive for some?
We could do just a fun bowl which would be unsanctioned and the kids would not
qualify for the scholarship bowling tournaments. (Our oldest son received a
scholarship from the FYBA.)
Another thought is that moms
could bowl as well -- either with their kids or against each other??? Any
thoughts?
Karen is open to suggestions. Please feel free to email her with
ideas.

short-term students last year and had a wonderful experience. I am a
community coordinator for a program that hosts students for a 5-month or
10-month stay while they attend your local high school. I am trying to
find host families for students who hail from Norway, Hong Kong, Korea, Spain,
Germany (wouldn't it be great to turn a future leader from this country into a
home school advocate), Belgium, Thailand, Italy, Turkey, Switzerland, China,
the Netherlands, and Slovakia.
Host families provide a bed,
a place to do quiet studying, and the love and support any teenager would need.
PAX exchange students have had a minimum of 3 years of English. They have their
own insurance and spending money. Families can expect students to help with
household chores and participate in family activities.

Fencing Classes for Homeschoolers!!!
I just found out that there is a fencing class for
Homeschoolers in
www.floridafencingacademy.com/FloridaFencingAcademy.com/Welcome.html
The class for Homeschoolers is every Friday, 9:30am-11:30am. (He told me
there is an hour of warm-up we were welcome to come to if we wanted to get
there @ 8:30am) He charges $60/mo per student, BUT, he (being a
father of 5 himself) gives a discount for multiple children.... I'm not going
to say what he gave me, but I will say that I'm paying 1/2 what I was going to
be charged at the other place to do fencing in Jonesville, & it's for 2 hrs
a week compared to their 1hr. My kids are very excited to get starting
with this, & are hoping to make some new friends. Please come check
out a class (I'm sure he'd let you come try it out before signing up).

Golf/Landscape/Forestry
Welcome back and Happy New Year!
We are all having to deal with budget cuts which affects travel, but we still
need to get good information to students about career opportunities where there
are jobs even in our slow economy. We have jobs in the golf, landscape, and
forest industries; more jobs than we can fill. We need outside oriented,
college bound, management oriented students. Interestingly, the landscape
industry is in dire need on managers. Our programs are:
1.
Golf Course Operations – 3 years – AS degree
2. Landscape Technology – 2 years – AS
degree
3. Agribusiness Management – 2 years – AS
degree
4.
5. Turf Equipment Technology – 1 year –
applied technology diploma
Also, remember that our AS degrees above articulate to Saint Leo on our campus
so that in two more years students can earn a bachelors in business on top of
our AS degree; very powerful
combination!

Hello,
My name is Patricia Littrell and I am the Regional Manager with Pacific
Intercultural Exchange (P.I.E.), a nonprofit educational organization. I
am working with international students coming to your community to attend local
high schools in the fall. They are in need of host families. These students
come from a variety of backgrounds and have many different interests. I
have successfully placed students with home school families many times and it
has been beneficial for everyone. The opportunity to learn about another
culture, another language and another part of the world is enriching for your
children as well as our students.
All students must have a family to call their own before August 30th. I
am hoping that some kind and loving families will be interested in opening up
their heart and home to one of them. There are few opportunities in this
world where an individual can take an active hand in making the world a better
place. This is such an opportunity!
You can go to the following website to take a look at the teens in need of an
immediate home.

There is no such thing as a typical host family! Single-parent families,
retired couples, families with young children, no children, as well as those
with teenagers or who are empty-nesters have all had successful hosting
experiences and embrace the opportunity to share their lives. Host
families are asked to provide a bed, meals and a loving home environment.
Students are between the ages of 15-18, come with their own personal spending
money to cover such expenses as clothing, school lunches, school supplies and
entertainment. They have their own medical insurance. Mostly, they
have a lot of love to give their American family!
Thank you in advance for helping to make a dream come true! If you
have any questions or need additional information, please contact me.
Kind Regards,
Patricia Littrell

When children learn the importance of good nutrition and exercise, they often
become very proactive in taking care of their health. I have weekly Healthy
Family Parties designed to equip and inspire children to go against the
unhealthy tide of our society and commit to good stewardship in the area of
eating and physical activity. I can provide this in my home or anywhere you
like.
These events follow the following format:
I talk a little about why we need antioxidants in our diet, what they are,
where they are found, and how they protect the body from disease. I tell an
interactive story.
The children go into an adjoining room and play Traffic Light Eating while the
moms (dads welcome also) watch Dr. William Sears' 9 Simple Steps to a Healthier
Family Diet DVD (12 minutes).
I share information about a form of concentrated fruits and vegetables
available in a capsule, chewable, or gummie that Dr. Sears and many other
widely known physicians recommend. There is no obligation to buy.
Parents frequently find their children very motivated by what they learn and
empowered to lead the family in making healthy choices. Oftentimes, when
the lessons being taught at home are reinforced by a health professional, it
increases the effectiveness.
The times I'm available to do this are:
All day Friday
Saturday afternoon and evenings
Thursday evenings
Call or email if you're interested or have any questions. Refreshments will be
served. If anyone would like to see the details of the story or the game, go to
the Events page of my website where there are links to the PDF files.

I'm a homeschooling father of five and have been teaching piano professionally
since 1992. My goal has been to glorify God through excellent,
encouraging teaching. Curriculum includes some music theory (why we do
what we do), ear training (helps to read music or play by ear), and songs that
are a fun challenge to learn and enjoyable to hear. I emphasize different
parts of this curriculum depending on the specific needs and desires of my
students and their families, so talk with me about your goals for music!
I am equipped to teach styles ranging from classical to the best of
contemporary music (including reading chord symbols). My special niche is
teaching interested students how to arrange hymns and praise songs to use in
worship. Many people think you must be born with the ability to arrange
music, but this is not true – it can be taught (and I really enjoy teaching it
). I can teach you in my home studio (tuition is $60/month), but the more
popular option with my students has been for me to teach in their homes (with a
travel fee), freeing up their schedules.
I currently have a few openings at clients' homes (start times are approximate
depending on travel time):
*Monday afternoon in the Keystone/Melrose area from 1pm - 3:30
*Thursday evening in West Gainesville from 6-7pm

Homeschool Connection SAT Prep Registration Form

Would you like to have someone come along side you to prepare your student for
the SAT? Cornerstone is offering an SAT Prep Course (at a fraction of the cost
of other small group courses offered by big name companies) to help your
student prepare for Bright Futures scholarships and college applications.
The course will consist of
eight 90-minute class meetings. Class will be held at
About the Course: Thursdays, Sept. 17 to
Thursday, November 19, 2009 (8 class meetings - no meeting on
Oct. 15)
Time: 10:30 am to 12 noon. (Alternate time is 2:30 pm to 4 pm Thursdays. Please
let me know your preference.)
This course is designed for
homeschooled students preparing to take the SAT for admission to college and/or
Bright Futures eligibility. The course will be customized for you personally.
You will meet with me in a small group setting for 90-minutes weekly. Class
time will be devoted to analyzing and strengthening weak areas, learning test
taking strategies, and any necessary review of concepts. You will first be
assessed on all three components (critical reading, math and writing), by
taking a practice SAT test. Assignments will then be customized for you to work
especially in the areas that you desire to improve. If you plan to take the
PSAT test on October 17th, this class will prepare you for that test, too. Lots
of practice and being very familiar with the types of questions is key to doing
well on these tests! Purchase of the preparation book offered by the College
Board, (the maker of the SAT test),called The Official SAT Study Guide Second
Edition will be required. It may be purchased at this link: www.collegeboard.com

However, students will have opportunities to compete in regional events if they like. We've had a student who went on to place fourth at a regional event (one place shy of being able to compete at national level), and sometimes a child will place lower, or sometimes not win anything at all. We've even had a couple of students who attend club but decided not to compete. ALL of the kids were glad they were a part of IMPACT. They learned, and were given a platform to practice, very good public speaking skills - the best, really. And they had a lot of fun. So much that our caboose Joel (14) just signed up for another year.

Read G. A. Henty Online
Hello,
My name is Zachary Miller, and I was homeschooled almost all my life. One of my
favorite things to do in my free time was to read all the books by G. A. Henty.
The only thing is, I never actually read ALL the books, because my family could
not afford to buy them all.
Henty books are one of the most popular book series with homeschoolers, and are
one of the best ways to learn history, but should families really have to pay
over $1200 just to read them all? Well, I don’t think so, and that’s why I
started the company G. A. Henty Online. What we do is provide a way for
families to be able to enjoy some of the greatest historical fiction novels of
all time, without breaking the bank. In fact, we are the only company in the
world that can provide you with some of the rarest stories Henty ever wrote.
You can find out more about what we offer at: www.gahentyonline.com

Christian-owned Horse Magazine
Hi there!
My name is Mandee Widrick and I am the editor of a Christian-owned horse
magazine based out of NY. Being a homeschool graduate myself, I would like to
introduce to you Bit & Bridle, as I believe it may be of interest
to your homeschool group. This magazine is not only great for young horse
owners, but it is also directed at those who aren't fortunate enough to have
their own horse. We feature interviews with top horsemen such as Lew Sterrett
and John Lyons, advice from certified veterinarians and other professionals,
subscriber interaction and contests, fictional and true stories, and much more.
We are also now accepting freelance submissions from young writers and
photographers over the age of 16. The website is www.bitandbridlemag.com
for anyone who would like more information. This magazine prints bi-monthly,
and subscriptions are available for $15 (US funds) per year. (Sample issues are
$3 each and available by request.)
Advertising space is also available for business owners, starting at only $30
per issue.
Sincerely,
Mandee Widrick

Website to Check Reading Level
www.arbookfind.com (click on “advanced
search”)
This is a website designed for the Accelerated Reader program for public
schools. The students read books and then take an online test for
comprehension. They earn points if they pass the test and the school receives
some kind of reward for the points the students earn. We don’t participate in
the program, but I have found the website helpful for checking on the
approximate reading level for books we read. You can query the database by
title, author or reading level. The reading levels are by grade, by month. For
example 3.4 would be third grade, fourth month. Of course the reading levels
are somewhat subjective so I would only use it as a guide and not a diagnostic
tool.

Recipes for Health (on
left-hand side) - Our Daily Bread
"Prior to the 1900;s
most flour was milled locally and bread was baked at home. God designed the
wheat kernel, as well as other grains, to perfectly store the nutrients within.
Once broken open, as in milling, the nutrients immediately begin to oxidize.
Within about 72 hours, 90 per cent of over 30 nutrients are virtually gone.
Since the germ oil causes the flour to turn rancid very quickly, only enough
grain was ground each day to meet the needs of the community. This meant that just
about every family was gathering their manna daily."

Christmas Wishlist Idea
Kolleen Heck heckjunk@bellsouth.net
I have been trying to think
of a way that so many things could be done a little different at our house this
Christmas. I haven’t been able to get our son to give up some of his toys for
others. This year money is tighter for most everyone. I was thinking if we
could each make Christmas lists of things that you want to bless your family
with, but can’t afford to this year. You can dream as big as a piano and
as small as a Lego.
It would give all of us a chance to help fill the Christmas list of eachother,
with items we have in our own homes. If Caleb, our son saw that someone really
could use an item, he would be able to meet that need with a more giving heart.
Usually we try to donate items to the used stores, but then if it doesn’t sell
he sees it and it makes him sad, this way he knows it will bless someone.
I was thinking we all have books we have read and don’t need anymore, DVD’s,
crafts we will never finish, clothes that would bless someone’s children or
tools your husband would consider giving to another husband if we knew the need
of another who could use it.
We all have strange nick
knacks that maybe would be something a grandparent collects that you could give
to someone.
For example: Caleb loves Rescue Heroes, I’d like to give my husband a Godly
book with humor. My mother-in-law loves Christmas (Santas from around the
world), my sister in law loves Cows....Caleb keeps eyeballing a new game, but I
think full price for a year or less using it, I would rather find it used.
Another thing we do. We are the type of family that has Santa on the side. So,
some of the more used items we get, I place them together and declare them:
"From the island of misfit toys."
I guess I am thinking a couple of different things ... we as a family can bless
someone else, my attic isn’t really considered being a good steward or the
closet in mothballs, blessing others is like storing treasures in heaven,
letting others know a need or a want is okay, God doesn’t mind His children
asking for help. Sometimes we think it must be selfish to ask for
something. It was mentioned that people are willing to give, but have a hard
time asking. But the truth I have found is it is sad to deny someone
else the blessing of blessing us.
***
Here's the plan, if you could
send me your Christmas wishlist (it could also be for down the road a birthday
gift), sizes, colors, whatever details you need to include to help us all find
these items in our own homes, and email it to me, Kolleen
Attention: Christmas List at heckjunk@bellsouth.net
... I can then give Juli (Titus 2 Homeschoolers Newsletter) a collective list
for her to send out. We would need your email address and phone
numbers. You can then notify the person from the list you could bless and
set up a way to get the item to them.
Thanks for listening.
~Kolleen

Looking for a Sponsor
Yhonny lives North of La Paz
in a very remote area. Many homes don't even have running water and
electricity. Yhonny doesn't have a father in the home and he has 3 siblings.
Average income in this area is about $114/month. I sponsor a child in that same
student center.
Sponsoring him involves:
1. Praying for him.
2. Writing him a letter of encouragement from time to time.
3. $38/month.
The order that I wrote this in is the right order. The prayers and the letters
are far more important than the $38. The reason being is that the children
really love their sponsors and they really look for the letters from the
sponsors.
I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone may have.

August 28, 2009
Dear Friends,
The process of selecting a United States Senator has been guided by the intent
to select someone of great honor and integrity, who also has demonstrated a
commitment to serve the people of our state.
I am grateful to the Floridians we considered for this appointment – for their
service in their respective capacities, and for their patience with this
process. They are honorable men and women of great distinction, and I thank
them all for their wisdom and their candor.
I am also grateful to Senator Mel Martinez for his years of service to our
great state. His is a story that illustrates the American Dream for so many in
this country and around the world. I wish him and his family well as he
transitions back into private life.
The guiding principle of my career, my campaigns, and our administration has
been public service. I have had the great honor to work with so many hard
working public servants who choose to put service above self in ways that
inspire and encourage me to continue my commitment to the people each and every
day.
So many of the individuals who serve in our administration sacrifice time with
their families and financial opportunities in the private sector to give back
to the very communities that nurtured their upbringing in our great state and
around the country.
George LeMieux has been a tremendous example of this very type of commitment.
When the private sector first called, George chose the path of public service –
to first serve as Deputy Attorney General, and then as Chief of Staff in our
administration.
I am proud to inform you today that I am appointing former Deputy Attorney
General George LeMieux to the United States Senate where he will serve the
remainder of Senator Mel Martinez's term.
He has argued before the United States Supreme Court and played an integral
role in the creation of the Florida Cyber Crime Unit. He was instrumental in
developing legislation to provide handheld devices to protect our children and
to improve higher education for our students.
He has built a beautiful family with his wife Meike and their three wonderful

MONITORING THE U.N.
www.parentalrights.org
If this treaty is ratified:
· The laws of all 50 states on
children and parents would be superseded by this international law by virtue of
a specific provision of the US Constitution which expressly declares treaties
to be supreme over state law. Virtually all law on children and parents is
state law.
· Good parents would no longer be
entitled to the legal presumption that they act in the best interests of their
children. Instead, the government would have the authority to overrule all
parents on any decision concerning the child if the government believed it
could make a better decision.
·
Parents could no longer spank their children.
· Children would have the legal right
to choose their own religion. Parents would be permitted only to give advice.
·
We need the: THE PARENTAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT
SECTION 1
The liberty of parents to direct the upbringing and education of their children
is a fundamental right.
SECTION 2
Neither the United States nor any State shall infringe upon this right without
demonstrating that its governmental interest as applied to the person is of the
highest order and not otherwise served.
SECTION 3
No treaty may be adopted nor shall any source of international law be employed
to supersede, modify, interpret, or apply to the rights guaranteed by this
article.

Rights Amendment:

HEF
Brenda Dickinson
President, The Home Education Foundation
www.flhef.org
HEF has been working
hand-in-hand with officials from the NCAA to ensure a smooth eligibility
process for students wishing to participate in competitive athletics through
the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The following Q & A will be
posted on the HEF website (http://www.flhef.org
).
Answers to NCAA Eligibility Questions
If a student athlete is talented enough to play at the college level, it is
very important to become very familiar with the NCAA website at least when the
student enters 8th grade, if not before. The requirements are very strict
and failing to meet those requirements could deny a star athlete eligibility to
play college sports and receive a scholarship. The NCAA Eligibility
website is very helpful. (www.ncaa.org
) Go to Academics & Athletes, then click on
Home educated students must meet the same academic requirements as other students,
although the documentation is a little different. The academic
requirements and other information are on the NCAA website. However,
additional questions to those on the website come up from time to time for home
education students. Because home education students have so many choices
and paths to achieve their educational goals, they don't always fit the mold
for public or private school students. Therefore, the HEF has asked the
following questions and answers which have been approved by the NCAA in order
to provide parents more information.
1. Can courses taken in the 8th grade count toward the NCAA required core
courses?
Yes, if the course satisfies the core course requirement and is an approved
high school course. The course must be:
Algebra or above
Biology, physical science or above
English if it can be proved that the course is a college-prep course level
2. Will the NCAA accept Credit by Exam?
No.
3. How can home educated students document their coursework?
The NCAA will want to know the textbooks and publishers for each course
taken. They will accept Rosetta Stone for foreign language if done at
home. However,
4. Can a student have too many credits on the high school transcript?
There is no cap on the number of credits a student can earn. The NCAA
only considers the required core courses for determining eligibility and grade
point average. At this time, Division 1 requires 16 core courses and
Division II requires 14, but on August 1, 2013, Division II will also begin
requiring 16 core courses. See the NCAA website for specific
requirements.
5. May college courses count as core courses? College courses may be used
to satisfy core-curriculum requirements if the courses are accepted and are
awarded credit by the high school (or in a home education program) for any
student and meets all other requirements for core courses.
For NCAA Division I only, such courses must be placed on the student's high
school transcript. Courses taken at a college will NOT appear on the high
school's NCAA List of Approved Core Courses. The high school's NCAA List of
Approved Core Courses will include only those courses taught/offered by the
high school.
6. How would a home education parent know if the college courses taken
through dual enrollment satisfy the NCAA core-curriculum requirements?
This list equates the college course content to the content of high school
courses. The course codes for college courses and high school courses are
specified on this list. The Florida Department of Education Office of
Articulation has examined the content of each course, as required by law, to
establish this approved list. It is used by public and private schools to
determine if a dual enrollment course meets the high school graduation
requirement.
7. Can a high school student take too many college courses?
Not if the courses are taken concurrently in the high school or in a home
education program. A student can even earn an AA degree as long as the
courses are taken part-time through dual enrollment. The college
eligibility clock starts running the moment a student is enrolled full-time in
college.
Caution: High school students need to know how the college is classifying
them. Early admission programs may classify the student as a full-time
college student, even though the student has not completed home education. This
would cause the college clock to start running and the student would loose a
year of eligibility.
8. How many years of college eligibility does a student who has completed
an AA degree have?
Generally, if a student has never been classified as a full-time college, the
student has 5 years in a Division I college and 10 semesters in Division II or
III colleges to complete 4 seasons. However, to guarantee accurate information
in each situation, student-athletes and/or their parents are urged to contact
NCAA Membership Service at 317-917-6000, Monday-Friday, from Noon to 4:00 pm to
obtain official information about individual eligibility. NCAA will be
glad to advise and answer specific questions.

The Fourth Amendment's Impact on Child Abuse
Investigations
Michael P. Farris
President, Patrick Henry College
Chairman, Home School Legal Defense Association
The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit said it best,
"The government's interest in the welfare of children embraces not only
protecting children from physical abuse, but also protecting children's
interest in the privacy and dignity of their homes and in the lawfully exercised
authority of their parents." Calabretta v. Floyd, 189 F.3d 808 (1999).
This statement came in a case which held that social workers who, in pursuit of
a child abuse investigation, invaded a family home without a warrant violate
the Fourth Amendment rights of both children and parents. Upon remand for the
damages phase of the trial, the social workers, the police officers, and the
governments that employed them settled this civil rights case for $150,000.

The 4th Amendment Applies to Social Workers
Volume 44, Program 8
4/2/2003
Is it legal for social workers to come into your home without a search warrant?
Today on Home School Heartbeat Mike Smith talks with HSLDA's litigation
attorney Jim Mason about the 4th Amendment.
Mike:
Jim, it seems that social workers in the Stumbo case thought the constitution
didn't apply to them. Does the 4th amendment apply to social workers? And if so
why is it important that they recognize this?
Jim:
Mike, most emphatically the 4th amendment applies to social workers. The 4th
amendment says that the right of the people to be secure in their persons,
houses, papers and affects against unreasonable searches and seizures shall not
be violated. The 4th amendment applies to all state actors. It doesn't say that
it doesn't apply to social workers. When social workers come out to investigate
an allegation of abuse or neglect, they are under the exact same requirements
as police officers investigating crime. It's important that they understand
that because when a social worker comes out to the house, they are intruding
into one of the most important areas of our lives--our homes and our families.
That's the very heart of what the 4th amendment was intended to protect. And
social workers while they have an important role in finding child abuse and
neglect cases, they can't run rough shod over the
rights of people.
Mike:
Well, Jim was you know HSLDA has committed a lot of time to making this a
reality. That is that social workers have to realize that the 4th Amendment to
the Constitution applies to them and other government workers. And until next
time, I'm Mike Smith.
