As we face the
daily challenges of home schooling children with special needs, one of our
greatest blessings can be each other. Every meeting leaves me recharged with new
ideas. Renewed with the energy that can only come from talking to those who
truly understand the challenges we face. Thank you all, for sharing your time,
your knowledge, and your hearts.
I hope the list
is pretty self-explanatory. The names in parentheses are the people who
presented the resource at the meetings. If you want more information about that
source, you will know whom to contact. Please forgive me if I did not give the
proper person credit for all of the ideas that were presented. Some times the
ideas are flying so fast that I'm not sure if I caught it all.
With blessings,
Patricia V.

Hi, Thank you to
Patricia for starting this list! I will try to do it justice and keep up with
it! I pray that it will be of help to anyone who needs it. First names of the
person who shared the info are noted. If more information is required, you may
e-mail me and I will pass the info along to connect you with the person who
shared.
In Him,

Hi everyone,
Well, after some
thought and prayer, Mike and I have decided that the time has come to
discontinue the Border's group. Thank you all for the years of great
fellowship and sharing of ideas. We would still like to offer an e-loop
and if anyone sends a question to us, we'd send it to the group and families
can reply individually if you have information and experiences to share.
The web page of our past meetings will remain up and running for anyone seeking
help with LD. Please let us know if you would like your e-mail to remain on
the Border's E-group mailing list.
Blessings,
The Stewart's

Difficulties
Persevering When Things are Difficult or Boring
Proverbs 6:6-8
Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and be
wise! Even though they have no prince, governor, or ruler to make them
work, they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter.
Proverbs 12:11
Hard work means prosperity; only fools idle away their time.
Proverbs 22:29
Do you see any truly competent workers? They will serve kings rather than
ordinary people.
Proverbs 24:27
Develop your business first before building your house.
Talking Before Listening
Proverbs 10:19
Don't talk too much, for it fosters sin. Be sensible and turn off the flow!
Proverbs 18:13
What a shame, what folly, to give advice before listening to the facts!
Proverbs 21:23
If you keep your mouth shut, you will stay out of trouble.
James 1:19
My dear brothers and sisters, be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to

Not Doing What They Say They
Will Do
Eccl. 5:1-7
As you enter the house of God, keep your ears open and your mouth shut! Don't
be a fool who doesn't realize that mindless offerings to God are evil.
And don't make rash promises to God, for he is in heaven, and you are only here
on earth. So let your words be few.
Just as being too busy gives you nightmares, being a fool makes you a
blabbermouth. So when you make a promise to God, don't delay in following
through, for God takes no pleasure in fools. Keep all the promises you make to
him. It is better to say nothing than to promise something that you don't
follow through on. In such cases, your mouth is making you sin. And don't
defend yourself by telling the Temple messenger that the promise you made was a
mistake. That would make God angry, and he might wipe out everything you have
achieved.
Dreaming all the time instead of working is foolishness. And there is ruin in a
flood of empty words. Fear God instead.
Slowness in Learning From Past
Experiences and Wisdom of Others
Proverbs 3:1-2
My child, never forget the things I have taught you. Store my commands in your
heart, for they will give you a long and satisfying life.
Proverbs 12:15
Fools think they need no advice, but the wise listen to others.
Proverbs 15:31
If you listen to constructive criticism, you will be at home among the wise.

Healing ADD: The Breakthrough Program That Allows You to See and Heal the Six Types of Attention Deficit Disorder
by: Daniel G. Amen M.D.
From Our
Editors
Every parent of a child diagnosed with ADD (attention deficit disorder)
knows the pain and frustration of attempting to apply one-size-fits-all
solutions to their kid's specific condition. Dr. Daniel G. Amen, an
internationally recognized authority on the disorder, maintains that there are
at least half a dozen distinct types of ADD, each requiring a different
treatment. This moderate, detailed book offers recommendations about therapy,
prescription drugs, and reprogramming techniques for ADD people of all ages.
From the Publisher
Commonly perceived as a flavor-of-the-month diagnosis, ADD is, in fact, an enormous health problem that will only continue to grow. It affects six percent of the population, yet less than one-third of the afflicted are taking medication. Why? According to Dr. Daniel Amen, attention deficit disorder is underdiagnosed, often incorrectly treated, and poorly understood. Dr. Amen, board-certified in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry and licensed in nuclear brain imaging, has discovered that there are six types of ADD -- not just the commonly known two. Moreover, the most frequently prescribed treatment -- Ritalin -- makes four of these types worse. Dr. Amen's discovery results from an intensive, years-long study of brain imaging that has identified the distinctive brain dysfunctions characterizing each type of ADD. Dr. Amen's arresting brain images found throughout these pages leave no doubt that ADD is a real, biological, and ultimately treatable disorder. These dramatic images help sufferers and their families realize this is a medical problem that can be helped with proper intervention. Until now, the psychiatric community has not done enough for people with ADD. The disorder does not disappear after adolescence, and it is much more complex than we have been led to believe. With Dr. Amen's revolutionary approach, readers will learn the full scope of the disease and its management. Finally, in this book, he identifies six types of ADD. Complete with recommendations for prescription drugs, nutraceutical therapy, cognitive reprogramming, parenting and educational strategies, biofeedback, self-hypnosis, and more, Healing ADD provides readers with a comprehensive treatment program that can lead to a normal, peaceful, and fully functional life. This proven program greatly enhances brain function for each of the six types of ADD and presents the state-of-the-art treatment for adults and children alike. ADD sufferers often say, "The harder I try, the worse it gets." Dr. Amen tells them, for the first time, how to get well.

Asperger's Syndrome
What is it?
http://www.homeschoolzone.com/add/aspergers.htm
AS is defined as a form of autism. It was "discovered" by Hans Asperger's
back in 1944. It is stressful for kids with AS to interact with other kids and
adults. Though they may desperately want to have friends they find that it's
very hard to "read" and understand what others mean. It's as if they
are "emotionally blind". Find out how to recognize AS in your child,
what experts in the field have to say about this condition, and what you can do
help make you life better.

Overcoming Dyslexia: A New and Complete
Science-Based Program for Reading Problems at Any Level
by: Sally Shaywitz
From the
Publisher
From one of the world’s
leading experts on reading and dyslexia, the most comprehensive, up-to-date,
and practical book yet to help us understand, identify, and overcome the
reading problems that plague American children today. For the one in every five
children who has dyslexia and the millions of others who struggle to read at
their own grade levels—and for their parents, teachers, and tutors—this book
can make a difference.
Drawing on recent scientific breakthroughs—many of them in her own
laboratory—Dr. Shaywitz demystifies the subject of reading difficulties and
explains how a child can be helped to become a good reader. She discusses early
diagnosis in young children as well as the diagnosing of older children, young
adults, and adults. Dr. Shaywitz explains why some bright adults can read only
very slowly, and what they can do about it. Her book makes clear how the latest
research, including new brain imaging studies, is uncovering the mechanisms
underlying dyslexia and has led to effective treatments for each age group.
Dr. Shaywitz instructs parents in what they can do year-by-year,
grade-by-grade, step-by-step for a dyslexic child. She lays out a home program
for enhanced reading; guides parents in choosing the best school for their
child and in working with teachers; and suggests ways of raising and preserving
the child’s self-esteem. She provides exercises, teaching aids, information on
computer programs, and many other invaluable resources.
In addition, her book corrects such popular (and harmful) myths as the belief
that dyslexia is primarily a male problem, that children with dyslexia see
words backward, that dyslexia islinked to intelligence. She shows us how,
although dyslexia cannot be outgrown, its effects can, with careful planning
and hard work, be overcome.
Dr. Shaywitz lifts the barrier of ignorance surrounding dyslexia and replaces
it with the comfort of knowledge. Here is a trusted source to which you can
turn for information, advice, guidance, and explanation. In sum, here is
cutting-edge research translated into an easy-to-follow plan of action offering
help—and hope—to all who have reading problems, and their families.

English Grammar:
Teaching your children proper English - Emma Serl's Primary
Language Lessons makes it easy, even for the novice.
An experienced teacher of the early twentieth century,
Emma Serl recognized the two things necessary for teaching proper English:
capture the child's interest and drill, drill, drill. Primary Language
Lessons is a drill book, but with a difference. Imaginative lessons
and short, jargon-free instructions for teachers make it a pleasure for both
student and teacher - especially when the teacher is a home schooling mom.
How to teach your children
proper English - The second volume of Emma Serl's language series makes it easy
to teach during the often difficult intermediate years.
Emma Serl's Intermediate Language Lessons
is designed for teaching 4th, 5th and 6th grades. As she does with the first
volume of her series, Primary Language Lessons, Miss Serl uses
material that captures the interest of children. You find the writings of
Louisa May Alcott, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Alfred Tennyson, Helen Hunt
Jackson, Percy Bysshe Shelley, George MacDonald, Edward Everett Hale, William
Shakespeare and other outstanding authors. This reader includes imaginative
work projects that reinforce the lessons and direct the child to independent
research on topics as varied as coal and birds' nests.

Write Source 2000
A Guide to Writing, Thinking, and Learning (bought my book off of E-bay!)
Multisyllabic Words
It helps to listen the the child read out loud and then mark which syllables gave the child trouble in the word.
Ex:
understanding
un der stand ing ????
~Patricia V.
Index Card Vocab
Divide an index card into fourths with a pencil. In upper left corner write the word that's giving the child trouble and also write the "Note: Sounds like: _____" Example: Wary ... sounds like hairy (draw a hairy head or something). In the upper right corner write the definition. In the lower left corner the child comes up with a sentence using the word. Either you or the child writes it out. This depends on if handwritting is difficult for the child. This exercise is for vocab and not handwriting. In the lower right corner, the child draws a picture for the word. Then you can use like flash cards. Show the picture and cover your hand over the rest and the child says the word and writes the word!
~Patricia V.
Homophone Index Cards
Take 2 (or more) index cards and divide each card into half with a pencil. On the left side, divide each again into half horizontally. Write the words in the upper left box of each card. Example: Steal and Steel. In the lower left box of each card, write a sentence using the words. Example: To steal a toy from a store is wrong. The sword is made of steel. Then on the bigger right side box, have the child draw a picture of each word.
~Patricia V.
Diphthong Chart
Draw a chart and have all "ee" words be blue. All "ea" words be orange. All "ai" words be red. Etc. But work on one diphthong at a time.

REWARDS is the foundation of the REWARDS Series. It is an intense,
short-duration intervention program that uses teacher-directed instruction,
requires minimal teacher training, and aligns with components of scentifically
based reading research. It explicitly teaches decoding and fluency with an
integrated approach. By implementing REWARDS, educators will help struggling
readers:
- Break words containing two to eight parts into manageable, decodable "chunks"
- Accurately read more multisyllabic words in sentences and content-area
textbooks
- Read content-area passages accurately and fluently
- Enhance oral and silent reading fluency
- Improve comprehension as accuracy and fluency increase
- Gain greater confidence in their reading ability

WRITING IN NARRATIVE
I wish this program had been around twenty-one years ago when we began homeschooling our children. I did not have a very good background in writing at that time. I have learned much since then, but not without trial and error and many helpful programs. This one is very helpful.
Writing is one of the most important skills children and adults need. It involves our most common means of communication aside from speaking. However, writing is one subject that seems to be very lacking in school. I think it may be due to the time it takes them to grade hundreds of student papers without a set answer key.
Each student writes at different ability levels. Besides the need for time, grading someone’s writing requires one of two things: either a good knowledge of the grammar rules or a good reference handbook. This program helps parents teach their students at each level how to write properly. Book A introduces young pre-writers to the meanings of the four major parts of a story — Setting, Problem, Solution and Conclusion. Children will learn to express simple stories. Book B enhances the lessons in Book A plus teaches paragraphing. It also introduces creative writing to the beginning writer.
Writing in Narrative develops further writing skills in sentences and paragraphs adding journaling, book reports, conversational, descriptive, and mystery writing. Several grammar skills are put into practice in this level. A multi-grade level writing text, it may be used for two years or more. There are 36 lessons in the book, and each lesson will take several days. As to the range in grades it covers, a third or fourth grade student may begin at the beginning and work through the book in two years or so. A fifth-seventh grade student (who has not covered a thorough writing instruction curriculum before), should also begin at the beginning, but should be able to work through the lessons in less time than a younger student. If your eighth grader or above is just beginning thorough writing instruction (as does happen occasionally), he should begin at the beginning of the book, as well, moving quickly through the lessons until challenged. Then he may work more thoroughly through the text.
The Essay Handbook will take your student step by step through the parts of essay writing. This is a very complete and comprehensive, easy to use program. Parents will enjoy learning the writing instruction skills that possibly bypassed them in school right alongside their children.

Reading & Writing Sourcebooks offer a comprehensive, literature-based approach to help struggling learners build the strategies they need to become confident readers. Each Sourcebook begins with fiction and nonfiction selections that are two years below grade level and gradually progresses to more grade-level appropriate texts. What is a
learning disability?
LD is a disorder that affects people's ability to either interpret what they see and hear or to link information from different parts of the brain. These limitations can show up in many ways: as specific difficulties with spoken and written language, coordination, self control, or attention. Such difficulties extend to schoolwork and can impede learning to read, write, or do math. For more general information on learning disabilities, please visit LD In-General in our LD In-Depth section.

Reading Disabilities and Language Disorders
When reading disabilities and language disorders get in the way of learning, the results can be frustrating for both the children and their parents. If allowed to continue unabated, reading disabilities and language disorders can cause affected individuals to begin to withdraw from participation in the educational process. The effects of such withdrawal, of course, can be seen in a child's low self-esteem, eroded confidence and an overall negative academic experience. The Learning Connection was founded for the sole purpose of solving the underlying root problems that keep students from achieving at their top potential.

Types or
Sensory Defensiveness
Tactile: is an
over-reaction to touch.
Oral: is an
avoidance of certain textures of food or things in and around the mouth area.
Gravitational:
presents as an irrational fear of changes in head position or movement.
Postural: is a
fear and avoidance of certain movement activities.
Proprioceptive:
is a resistance to input into the joints.
Auditory: is a
over sensitivity to certain sounds.
Visual: appears
as an over sensitivity to light or certain visual stimuli.
Excerpt
"From A to Z with A.C.G." Newsletter
Sensory
Defensiveness is
defined as having an anxious reaction to what neurotypical persons would
consider non-noxious sensory stimuli. In other words, a person is sensory
defensive if he/she has a negative reaction to sensory input that is typically
considered either positive or at least neutral. It is not uncommon for
individuals to have a few mild sensory defensive traits. When multiple
defensive traits that impact the person's day-to-day life are present, that
person is considered to be Sensory Defensive. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sensory_defensiveness
The
Sensory Diet
What on earth is a “sensory diet”? No, this is not a diet of only certain foods or certain calories. A sensory diet is a term used to describe sensory activities that are used to treat kids with Sensory Integration Disorder. Your occupational therapist will create a “menu” of activities to do with your child. She will have you perform these activities in a particular order to create a sensory “meal” or “snack”. Just like nutritional diets, the sensory diet is designed for your child’s sensory needs. Your occupational therapist will create a plan of activities for you to do throughout the day. www.justmommies.com/articles/sensory-diet.shtml

Auditory Processing Disorders - We Hear with Our Brain
We all realize that hearing begins with our ears. However, we understand what we hear ... we listen .. with our brain. If the brain pathways or the brain itself cannot quickly and correctly identify and process what is being heard, then speech information is misunderstood or lost altogether. This problem is now commonly referred to as an auditory processing disorder (APD). According to research at the University of Florida, "an estimated 3 out of every 100 school age children ... about one per classroom ... have APD. This type of hearing impairment can contribute to poor school performance, reading disorders, inattention during classroom instruction, and to general behavior problems."
An emphasis on brain research shows there is now clear evidence that some children who have normal ability to hear faint sounds can have serious difficulties processing and perceiving conversational speech, or listening effectively in noisy conditions. Children with APD may also experience difficulty understanding degraded or rapid speech, following spoken instructions, and discriminating and identifying similar speech sounds. Some common characteristics of children with APD include: academic problems, especially reading, spelling and writing; short attention span when listening; inability to follow spoken directions; poor social skills; difficulty discriminating between similar sounding words; complains about loud noise; distracted by background noises; behavioral problems.

characteristics that are unique to 49ers. Thus, as mentioned in a medical

Spectrum Training
Systems, Inc. serves to educate parents, teachers, therapists and individuals
who work directly with anyone affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Our goal is to raise the awareness level of ASD by
personally bringing knowledge to the public through conferences and
workshops. Although we work primarily in the Midwest, our company is
branching out to new states every year.
Autism is a spectrum disorder, which means it can affect an individual anywhere
from slightly to severely. Since this is quite a large range, children
have been increasingly diagnosed because information about ASD is being
disseminated throughout their communities. As teachers, parents and
health professionals, we have a personal obligation to learn as much as we can
to help our children and those with ASD live to their fullest potential.
Our speakers are internationally recognized experts, authors and doctors in the
field of Autism Spectrum Disorder. They specialize in different subject
matter regarding ASD including: behavioral and educational strategies, sensory
issues, inclusion, speech and language, usage of medication, ADHD,
curriculum adaptation, emergency situations, and even personally living
with ASD.

The Survival Guide for Kids with LD
by Gary Fisher
From
School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up-- A book intended
for use by young people with this disability. While LD may mean learning
disabled to some people, to them, the authors explain, it means "learning
different." The book begins with the "Six Great Gripes of Kids with
LD," the first of which is, "No one explains what LD is, so we spend
a lot of time worrying about what is wrong with us." In the 12 chapters
that comprise the body of this book, the authors describe the five types of LD,
the rights of LD students in public schools, and a variety of behaviors to help
LD kids manage their feelings and get along better at home and in school. The
final chapter stresses ways in which to prepare for adult life. Scattered
throughout the chapters are activities and exercises to help LD kids to better
understand and to cope with their problems. The text is written in a simple,
straightforward, and chatty style and includes short case studies and stories
explaining how real LD kids reacted in the situations under discussion. A
section for parents and teachers provides additional resources and information.
The clearly written, factual material will help those with LD and those who
live or work with them to understand the complexities of this disability.

What is Vision Therapy?
www.pavevision.org/visiontraining.htm
Optometric visual training, sometimes called vision therapy or VT, is that part of optometric care devoted to developing, improving and enhancing people's visual performance.
Over several decades, behavioral optometrists have developed and used visual training in combination with appropriate, judiciously selected lenses to:
Prevent vision and eye problems from developing
Develop the visual skills needed to achieve more effectively at school, work or play
Enhance functioning on tasks demanding sustained visual effort
Remediate or compensate for vision and eye problems which have already developed
What is Behavioral Optometrists?
Behavioral optometrists spend years in post-graduate, continuing education to master the complex visual programs prescribed to prevent or eliminate visual problems and enhance visual performance.
Not all optometrists practice behavioral optometry, which includes developmental and functional optometry. If you do not now have an optometrist who practices behavioral optometry, call or write the OEP Foundation. Or, make sure you receive a yes answer to each of the following questions before you make an appointment:
Do you make a full series of nearpoint vision tests?
Do you make work- or school-related visual perception tests?
Do you provide full vision care and visual training in your office, or will you refer me to a colleague if needed?
Will you see me again during the year, and periodically to determine my progress?
Optometric vision therapy, also referred to as visual training or orthoptics (CPT 92065), is an established, medically necessary therapy when prescribed by an optometrist. Optometric vision therapy can improve visual function much like physical therapy can improve general motor function. Clinical tests with associated normative values are administered by an optometrist to determine the presence of visual deficiencies. If optometric vision therapy is indicated, the optometrist recommends a specific treatment plan.
I found some good things. I haven't looked at it all. There is soooooo much there.

Vision is
more than 20/20!
Welcome to www.oep.org
As an organization, we are concerned with more than clear vision at distance [distance acuity]. Optometrists who provide behavioral vision care seek the cause of visual dysfunction and treat those causes, not just symptoms (headaches, blurred or double vision, poor comprehension, "not working to potential").
Who needs
behavioral vision care? The simple answer is: "Everybody!" All can
benefit from more efficient vision. However, certain individuals will
especially benefit from care provided by a behavioral optometrist:
students who have
been diagnosed as 'learning disabled'
computer users
athletes
individuals who
have suffered from a brain injury or other cerebral trauma
those who have
been labeled as 'juvenile delinquents'
those who use
their near vision a great deal at work or in recreation

Christian Home Economics
Spend a semester learning what the Bible says about
homemaking with Christian Home Economics by Suzie Young! Based on Titus 2:4-5,
this course is a wonderful way for your high-school daughter to work through
what the Bible says a homemaker should be. Six units in a softbound workbook
cover these topics: Sobriety, To Love Their Husbands, To Love Their Children,
To Be Discreet, To Be Chaste, and To Be Keepers at Home.
This is not a "how to" book teaching interior
decorating, child care, and cooking, but instead a wonderful Biblical study on
what the heart of a homemaker should be. Each lesson provides the objectives,
some impressive vocabulary words, and then proceeds with text and a
fill-in-the-blank study, allowing the student the opportunity to find the answers
in the Scripture for herself. After the lesson text, there is a review quiz and
a self-test, and then a unit test. All answers are given for all parts of the
lesson in case you get stumped. The last section, "To Be Keepers At
Home," covers some of the home economics information you would have in a
traditional home ec course, but provides biblical advice as well.
If during the last section you wish to add other
resources in the various topic areas of cleaning, sewing, cooking, money
management, etc., they can be found in the Home Life Skills book reviewed
below. Together they provide a very complete home economics course.

When doing spelling words, write in print and in cursive! Or roll out thin play-doh "worms" and spell the words! Also, a writing "time" is nice. Light an oil lamp and incense. You and your child(ren) get pretty new journals and pens perhaps. Sit and write for 20 min. (or 5 min. if that is what you have to start with) about anything, even if it's about that you can't think of anything to write about! Special
Needs
Children With Special Needs Parents
who choose to homeschool their special-needs children operate on an elevated
level of determination, courage and commitment. Not only must they go against
the flow of the general public and educational experts, but they also must
accept that certain schooling approaches that work well for other homeschool
families are counterproductive for them. However, just like all other
home-educating parents, parents who homeschool children with learning difficulties
strive to create a framework for effective learning.
Finding a way to present material to
a child while matching his learning style is one of the first steps in the
process of developing any effective homeschool program, regardless of whether
special needs are a concern. Now, more than ever, resources are available to
help homeschoolers meet the requirements of special-needs stu- dents. These
resources include sup- port organizations, newsletters, how- to books,
manipulatives, textbooks, workbooks, evaluation personnel, testing and
software. The problem is not necessarily in finding help, but in not being
overwhelmed by the plethora of choices.

I.E.P. - Individual Education Plan

Individualized
Education Plan
http://www.snrproject.com/Content/IEP/IEP-Notebook.htm
Parent’s Notebook
Preparing for your child’s IEP meeting can be a challenging task. Gathering all
the past IEP forms, current notification forms, nursing notes, evaluation
reports, grades, doctor’s orders/letters, test results, classroom notes and
updates, tracking forms, parent’s goals etc. can add up to what sometimes seems
a veritable mountain of paperwork. Keeping it all in one place and readily
available is the challenge.
The answer? A Parent’s IEP Notebook! An updated Parent’s notebook will
provide a ready reference for all current IEP materials. It provides a place to
organize, track and plan for current IEPs as well as assisting the parent in
tracking their child’s progress. It will allow the parent a ready review to
assess how well the current IEP goals are working for their child and allow the
parent to assess when changes need to be made. Keeping an updated IEP notebook
in an easily accessible area will provide the parent an excellent
organizational tool. Documents can be easily added and subtracted from the
notebook as needed. The list could be endless! Use only that information that
is pertinent to you.
How to get started?
Use the following items:
A small to medium sized 3-ring binder.
Lined notebook paper (use for adding notes in each section if needed)
Clear page protectors
Several pocket folders
Tabbed dividers
A red pen or fine tipped marker
Notebook Set up.
The following information should be included in your parent notebook. Use only
those categories that apply to your situation. Not all parents are going to
need all these sections. Make up only those sections that work best for you.
Parent’s Guide (Both Federal and School District guides) Keep a copy of each
for ready reference in the front inside pocket of the binder cover.
Basic History and Diagnosis. Basic information will be helpful to the
educational staff assisting you in setting up the IEP.
Current photo. Sometimes matching a face to the name helps staff keep the Child
first and foremost in their minds. It’s much easier to think in “Real” terms
when you can put a face with the name.
Current IEP. This is the document that is being reviewed and adjusted. For
first time parents, this is the document you will need to keep handy and
constantly refer to.
Nursing Care Plan. For children requiring in classroom medical care. The parent
and the school RN will draw up part of this document at the IEP meeting with
pertinent detail handled afterwards.
Doctor’s Orders. Care items ordered by the child’s physician. This section can
include letters from the Dr. regarding care in the classroom, medications,
therapies provided by school staff etc. Keep COPIES in the notebook and the
originals in a hard file at home.
Short-term goals. Goals the child’s (if applicable) parents, and staff feel can
be met in 3-6 months. (See forms section)
Long-term goals. Goals to be met by the end of the school year. (See forms
section)
Counseling. Informational report given by school Counseling staff.
Speech Therapy. A current evaluation and recommended course of treatment.
Occupational Therapy. A current evaluation and recommended course of
treatment.
Physical Therapy. A current evaluation and recommended course of treatment.
Assistive Technologies. Equipment recommendations and procedures go here.
Transportation. Any letters, medical instructions, safety instructions,
specialized equipment instructions (wheelchair tie downs etc.) etc to
transportation staff regarding the safe transportation of your child to and
from school while on District bussing.
Extra Blank Forms and Lined Paper.
New information and old information may be added and subtracted at any time. It
is recommended that all “old” information be placed in a filing cabinet under
the dates of the school year for future reference.
Remember. This is to help you, the parent, stay organized and keep all your
information handy. The list could be endless! Use only that information that is
pertinent to you!

Auditory Training
We offer Tomatis-based auditory training, a method of stimulating the ears,
body and brain with modified classical music. With this method, the music (1)
exercises the auditory system in the ears to focus, tune out background noise
and hear without sound sensitivity; (2) stimulates the vestibular system for
better balance, coordination and muscle tone; and (3) causes the brain to
develop new brain pathways for improved processing of information, attention
span, memory, auditory processing, and sensory integration. We offer
center-based and home auditory training programs, all of which have benefits
for listening, learning and social skills.
Brain Training
We offer brain training, which consists of three types of brain organizing
activities: auditory training, balance training and computer brain training.
The fundamental mental processes that support learning are enhanced by brain
training, and learning problems are reduced or remediated. Brain research has
proven that our brains continue to grow new brain cells until we take our last
breath. Just as exercising our muscles makes them stronger, people can sharpen
their brains through mental exercise. The result is that learning is easier,
children feel more capable, and parents have more confidence in their
children’s future success.
Everyone Benefits
Many issues that have improved for people of all ages due to our Auditory
Training and Brain Training Programs include:

Dear Parents and Fellow
Educators,
I would like to inform you of my schedule for the next school year.
Whether your child or student is a returning or a new student I have a lot of
programs tailored to your child's individual needs. I am enclosing the
schedule so you may see when I will be available and what kind of programs I
have. (It's an attachment that you can
e-mail and ask Karen to send you. ~Juli Stewart) The bold items in my schedule do not start until
August 30 and are filled to capacity at this time. I will be free for the
next two weeks in the afternoons for 1 to 4 hour slots. This way I
can finish editing my English book for China.
This summer I enjoyed working with Chinese Children who were learning how to
read, write and speak English this summer as well as teaching in my summer
camp. All of my students learned more and many even moved up one whole
grade level in reading and writing in two different countries.
Now I am ready for the new school year to begin. If you or your students
plan on regular tutoring sessions for this year I would like to sit down with
your child and help them fill out an action plan for the next school
year. Then we can set some goals for 2004/2005 school year. Whether
it is math, reading, or writing your child needs to improve, I believe my
tutoring system will build your child's confidence and ability.
This year I am including the Brigance Diagnostic Assessment free in your first
session for all previous students and all students who sign up for a complete
block of tutoring. This will help your child measure success as
they move up in levels. I now also now provide multi-modal workshop
instruction, as well as individual reading/writing instruction. I have
also introduced new eye exercises for children with eye tracking difficulty.
Please take a look at the programs and times available now so I may keep a time
slot available for your needs. The schedule and program times are
in the attachment above. I would also be interested in knowing if you would
like to participate in workshops or field trips. If your son or daughter
would like to participate in any of the activities or trips on the list you
will need to let me know as groups will be limited to no more than four and
no less than three. Also permission slips will need to be signed ahead of
time. I look forward to hearing from you soon. I hope you had a
great summer.

This is a free service for Learning Disabled children. The training is 6-8 weeks long and is much in demand. Call them about the screening process, who qualifies, etc.
Even if you are not interested in the training or do not qualify, Karen says they offer a wealth of information and have been very helpful as a resource. For example, they told her about Touch Math. (Karen M)

Intro to Brain Compatible Learning Workshop’ by Lou Whitaker
Strategies that take advantage of how the brain learns best:
1. Reciprocal Teaching - taking turns teaching, even teaching the dog
2. Storytelling - employs novelty and higher interest to grab their attention
3. Metaphor, analogy, simile - helps relate new information to what they already know and creates an image that is easier to remember
4. Simulation - Role play
5. Reflect and Write - Reflection Journal, useful even for math, grammar etc.
6. Brainstorming Applications - Start with wild ideas, impossible ideas. It helps to loosen the kids up to more useable ideas. Be careful not to judge any ideas at this point. It can shut them down all together. There are no bad ideas in the brainstorming session. Judgment comes later.
7. Rhythm, Rhyme, Music - let them design their own to remember new ideas
8. Visual, Graphic Organizers - brain stores images longer that printed, abstract words
9. Project Based Learning - Using projects to discover learning rather than being told what they are to learn and having the project prove it. Problem Based Learning - asks, "How are we going to solve this problem?"
10. Mnemonics - memory and word games
Parents Assuring Student Success; Achievement Made Easy By Learning Together by John R. Ban This was the text for the PASSport to Success workshop series. It was used in the Valdosta school system and the entire school system grade average improved in one year. It addresses how parent attitude, home environment, study skills, learning expediters, note-taking, memory skills, thinking skills, test taking and reading skills. It is primarily junior high skills and above.

Finding Reading Levels
1. A Chart for determining the grade level for books from Great Leaps Reading Program (see Reading) To use it, you count out 100 words
~Juli S.
2. By using the spell-check on Microsoft Word, you can get a grade level for the writing sample. I clicked passed the panel as something I didn't need for years. After the spell-check is done, a panel called Readability Statistics shows up. Once I took the time to read it, I found that it gives a Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level at the very bottom. It has often inspired my son to improve his writing to a higher level.

'Inspiration'
A software program that creates mind maps that can be organized into outline form with the flick of a switch. It is useful for visual learners because they can record their ideas with words or pictures. There are several built in templates that would be easy to alter to fit your own needs. It is directed toward 3-8 grades.
~Patricia V.
'Kidspiration'
This program is basically the same as 'Inspiration' but geared towards k-3 but could be easily stretched. It's more expensive but it talks to you. It will read whatever is written in the program so it can be a great feedback tool for a beginning reader/writer.
The best part is that both programs are available for a free 30-day trial at www.inspiration.com
