About My Mission
My wife and I were not aware that our Son had diabetes until he had a heart attack and passed away just before his 28th birthday. The disease became my arch-enemy. I wanted to do something to stop this from happening to someone else.
I saw a flier about running marathons to find a cure I thought maybe this is something I can do. I knew I had a lot of work to do to get my body ready to run a marathon. I started out every morning for my walk and run. I finally worked my way up to a mile without stopping.
Finally on June 22, 2003, I ran a marathon in Kona, Hawaii and raised $6,000 for diabetes research. It was one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. I made up my mind right there at the finish line to keep running marathons to fight diabetes.
Later, I was very disappointed to hear the American Diabetes Association would no longer be sending people to run marathons in other states. So my wife and I decided to keep up the fight on our own. My plans are to run a marathon in every state and to keep running until a cure is found.
Our goal is to get the word to as many people as we can about the warning signs of diabetes. My wife is also very much involved in this fight. While I run the marathon, she passes out literature that we put together about diabetes. We feel if we can help just one person every time I run a marathon, it is well worth the effort. My wife passed out over 4,000 copies of our literature at my last marathon. We were totally overwhelmed by the response we got from everyone.
Running marathons has taught me that if you are willing to take a chance on yourself, to test your limits and to pursue your dream with passion, then anything is possible. For me, my daily runs have given me the time and space I need to heal. As I continue to run, I grow stronger physically and emotionally. There truly is a time when running transforms from a painful torture into a wonderful and rewarding experience. I feel truly blessed at the age of 58 to be healthy enough to pursue this mission that my wife and I have taken on.
