Not a day goes by that Jim Witheril Sr. doesn't think of his youngest child, Ryan. He was the "perfect son," an accomplished chef who was two months shy of getting married when he collapsed and died of a heart attack on March 17, 2000. Ryan Witheril was 27 and had diabetes, but nobody knew it. His death has turned his 56-year-old father into a crusader against the disease.
On Sunday, he will join thousands of people running in P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon. "This is something I can do to fight back against this disease," said Witheril, who plans to run marathons in all 50 states. "I feel the presence of my son when I run," said Witheril, of Phoenix, who will run the race wearing a T-shirt with Ryan's picture and the dates of his birth and death. "When I get tired, I hear this little voice, 'Come on, Dad, you can do this.
Witheril's goal is to raise $10,000 for diabetes research, but he's more focused on bringing attention to its commonly overlooked warning symptoms: frequent urination, excessive thirst and blurred vision.
