Diabetes Warning Signs
There are 18.2 million people in the United States with diabetes.
5.2 million people are unaware that they have the disease.

Unusual thirst
Very dry skin
Frequent urination
Extreme fatigue
Sudden vision changes
Extreme hunger
Unexplained weight loss
Frequent infections
Cuts or bruises that are slow to heal
Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
People who think they might have diabetes must see a physician for diagnosis.
One-Third of Diabetes Cases Missed Because Screening Is Ignored
Diabetes has a way of sneaking up on people gradually, often with very few outward symptoms. But even in the early, undiagnosed stages, it can cause serious harm: nerve damage, kidney & eye damage and even heart disease.
Some major factors for diabetes are being over weight and Lack of exercise. Family history of diabetes, belonging to an ethnic group at high risk for diabetes, such as Native Americans, African Americans, Latinos and Asian Americans.
There are two major types of diabetes:
Type 1 diabetes - Results from the body's failure to produce insulin, the hormone that "unlocks" the cells of the body, allowing glucose to enter and fuel them. It is estimated that 5-10% of Americans who are diagnosed with diabetes have type 1 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes - Results from insulin resistance (a condition in which the body fails to properly use insulin), combined with relative insulin deficiency. Approximately 90-95% (17 million) of Americans who are diagnosed with diabetes have type 2 diabetes.
