Welcome to the

DIGESTER

homepage

Digester is a new program I've written for people who subscribe to mailing lists in digest form but don't have the time to read through all the messages. It will process digests you have saved as .txt files, allowing you to quickly and easily select just the messages that interest you. You can filter on subject, author or keywords. Digester also includes a browser for viewing web pages mentioned in messages.

Since I wrote Digester for my own use and didn't spend too much time on it I offer it as freeware, and since it's free, that also means that I don't gauarantee I'll spend any time supporting it or writing upgrades. I ask only that you email me and let me know that you've tried it out, tell me what you think of it, or suggest new features or report bugs.

Features:

  • Works with E-Groups, MajorDomo and other digest formats.
  • Search by subject line, author or keywords.
  • Lets you search combined multiple digests, even from different lists.
  • Combines all the messages that meet your search criteria so you can read them in a single viewing.
  • Lets you save the results of your searches.
  • Lets you browse web sites mentioned in messages.

Requirements:

Should run on any flavor of Windows since v95. Space requirements are minimal.

Installation:

After you have downloaded Digester, unzip the files and save them to a folder on your hard drive. Run setup.exe to install the program. After installation is complete, start Digester and click on Digester.txt. This is a sample file in typical digest format that will let you see how the program works and also give you a little more information.

Saving messages to text files:

Probably all mail programs will let you save email messages as .txt files, and they probably all work something like this:

  1. Click File/Save As from the menu bar.

  2. From the Save As Type: pull-down box, choose Text (*.txt)

  3. Save the file, and you're done.

Most programs should let you select more than one message to save into a single file by holding down the control key while you click on the digests you want to save.

Known Bugs:

  • Digests from E-Groups, or any others that include the author's e-mail address in the index, will return the index along with the messages if two or more digests are combined. This is not necessarily a bug since the program is doing what I told it to do. I just haven't thought of a clean way to handle this yet, without affecting the way it works with other formats.
