Primary

Grades K-2

 

 

Religion

 

God is honored throughout the week in many different ways.  There are daily devotionals, weekly chapel services, and Bible memory verses.

 

The religion program includes:

 

V      Study of Old and New Testament stories

V      Study of importance of Christian holidays

V      Daily recitation of the Christian Pledge of Allegiance

 

 

Mathematics

 

Primary mathematics is the development of number sense.  This is comprised of math facts and math concepts.  In all three grades the following topics are studied at incremental levels:  time, money, patterns, and simple number sentences.  The following manipulatives are used: Patter Blocks, Unifix Cubes, Judy Clocks, and Base 10 Blocks.

 

Kindergarten

 

V      Number recognition 0-100

V      Rote count by ones and tens to 100

V      Simple time, money, and patterns

V      Math facts to five

 

Grade 1

 

V      Ordinal numbers through 10

V      Count by twos, fives, and tens

V      Simple story problems

V      Place Value: Ones, Tens, Hundreds

 

Grade 2

 

V      Advanced word problems

V      Add and subtract 2-digit numbers with and without regrouping

V      Identify and add coins to $0.99

V      Use customary and metric units of measurement

V      Place value and number identification through 999

 

 

Language Arts

 

The focus in Kindergarten through Grade 2 is learning to read.  Children develop and “bloom” into literacy at different times.  Formal reading begins in Kindergarten and continues in Grades 1 and 2.  Phonics material is used to reinforce sound-symbol correspondence.  Both sight word and phonetic strategies are taught in all three grade levels.

 

Kindergarten

 

V      Alphabet recognition, consonant blends, short vowel sounds

V      Upper and lowercase formation

V      Beginning sight words

 

Grade 1

 

V      Story identification

V      Long and short vowels, blends, decoding

V      Simple alphabetical order

V      Weekly spelling tests

 

Grade 2

 

V      Writing complete paragraphs

V      Identification of contractions, compound words, and suffixes

V      Daily oral language and grammar

V      Weekly spelling tests

V      Reading comprehension

 

 

Social Studies / Citizenship

 

Students learn that they are individuals and also a part of groups, as a school, neighborhood, city, state, nation, and world.  The importance of civic duty is emphasized.  Students learn that rules help groups work toward common goals.  Curriculum includes:

 

V      Daily recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance to America

V      Importance of Rules and Laws

V      Importance of Civic Holidays: Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Presidents’ Day, Martin Luther King Day

V      Import Historical Events and People: Thanksgiving, Columbus Day, Native Americans, Pilgrims, Religious Freedom

V      The Family Unit

V      Respecting Others

V      Neighborhood

V      Mapping Skills

V      Our Government

V      Cultures around the World

 

 

Science

 

The students learn about their physical world and surroundings.  Topics are studied in “units” that explore and emphasize God’s wonderful and mysterious creations.  These units overlap with the language arts and math at each grade level.  They include:

 

V      Human Body

V      Animals

V      Insects

V      Plants

V      Seasons

V      Solar System

V      Dinosaurs

V      Earth Day and Ecology

V      Space

V      Seeds

V      Magnets

V      Weather

 

 

Health

 

In addition to science, students learn about basic health and hygiene.  Topics covered include:

 

V      Senses

V      Manners

V      Dental and general hygiene

V      Exercise

V      Germs
