Atlas re-sculpt
The story so far...

I started a while back in wanting to make a new head for the MWDA Atlas. I ended up with a head that looked so-so (see page on that work, here). I kept looking at it and thinking, that it was a decent start, but it just wasn't right. The proportions are just so different from what I think the Atlas should be.

So I started to make an Atlas from scratch. I decided to go with the illustration in the 3025 Tech Readout, I've always liked that drawing the best.

Below is what I have so far. Click on an image to see a larger version showing more detail.

ThIs is an early production photo of the Atlas. At this point I hadn't made the thighs, missile pack and Ammo-box for the AC.

I had decided to make the thighs in putty to make it easier to adapt them to the pose, but ended up making them out of blocks of resin like most of the Atlas. It also has some plastic card stock and aluminum.

The Atlas has alot of trim and detal work yet, but its taking shape. The Thighs are done and in place. The SRM missle pack is attached temporarily as I figure out how it will attach. I added those disks to the back legs. A major pain but something that is part of the 'look' of the Atlas. I drilled out the missile sube holes in the chest after the patern on the 3025 cover.

Now what it needs most is detailing. I still have to make the antenna mounts and the ammo box. but these are pretty inor compared to all the detail work that lies ahead.

Here's a side-by-side comparison picture of the two Altas figures. I intentionally made it a little taller to make it look more like a 100 ton mech. Also, if Spike was to stand up straight, he'd be a little taller.
12/02/02 Here's the Atlas as of today. Other than the hoses, antennas and some details on the back, the sculpting work is done.
12/04/02 FINALLY!! it has some paint of it. It still needs some touch up and all the details (time for the great decal hunt). I'll probably also make a few more parts that steel grey.

Now I'm wishing there were more versions out there with different paint jobs. The red one on the MWDA box would be a great color scheme, but there's no dial for it.

Clicking on the image will take you to a page with six larger images on it.

12/07/02 I started painting a red one. You can almost make out in this picture the pieces that make up the Atlas (you can also see what a mess my workbench is)

I've included another side-by-side picture.

12/09/02 Christmas decorations are everywhere.. and heck... atleast its red...
This link has a few pictures of some of the tools I use on a regular basis to make the mechs.
