10:45 AM Go Fish Yesterday was dad's birthday (Happy Birthday again dad!) and to celebrate, we went out to dinner at a sushi place. Unfortunately neither Alex nor I are sushi fans, but everyone else (most importantly the Birthday Boy) seemed to enjoy it. As usual, an evening with my family is always educational. For those of you who missed it, I'll share the lessons from the evening. 1. All you can eat sushi is much less of a deal if the freaking waitress never comes by to take orders. Obvious, I know. But this kept happening again and again last night. Barbara got very good at flagging them down. Then the waitress would act somewhat surprised at how much we were ordering each time. Duh! Given that you might never come back, we have no choice but to order it all at once. 2. Having a huge tropical fish tank in a sushi restaurant just doesn't make sense. Would you want to eat a steak in the middle of a cattle yard? Violates the basic rule against seeing what you are eating in its natural state. A big no-no for me. And it's just plain mean to the fish in the tank. 3. For you parents out there: When your small child is having a meltdown in the middle of a restaurant, just repeating "It's time to stop that now" over and over and over and over again is perhaps not the best approach. Especially when you have been doing it for a while with zero success. Take the kid outside already! (Perhaps that is my kid-free bias rearing up. If so, I apologize.)) I was ready to stand up and yell "It's time to stop that now!!" myself, but directed at the parents. 4. Connor can easily eat an entire piece of shrimp tempura in one quick bite. Sometimes with the tail still attached. 5. Alex will never rely on me for ice cream recommendations again. I told him that green tea ice cream is really good (which I think it is). He disagreed. I personally think he just couldn't get past the color. Not a lot of green ice cream out there I suppose. 6. I still don't like sushi. Not sure how they won Connor over to the dark side, but I think there is still hope for him. Alex and I can work on that. We are greatly outnumbered and need reinforcements. 7. You can take just about anything, dip it in batter, deep fry it, and it will taste good. I had tempura last night. It was shrimp along with a bunch of other stuff. I could tell that there were onions, carrots, and zucchini. But then there were some things that I really couldn't identify. Could have been some sort of potato. Maybe squash? Or maybe an old shoe. Really no way to tell. Either way, it was still yummy after the frying. 8. I cannot type "sushi" to save my life. I realized in typing this post that I cannot type that word! Somehow I end up with a "c" in there just about every time. Maybe I just need more coffee. . . Have a great day! |
