3:49 PM Fat Cat(s) First of all, let me say that Dana's post about Gram was so touching and amazing that there is nothing I can write on that topic that would even compare. So I decided to just get back to the usual posts about nothing in particular. But for the record, it kills me seeing Gram struggling so much. And I wish there was something I could do. Any miracle fixes you can recommend would be much appreciated. Second of all, we are starting to realize that it's time for Big Fat Petey to be converted into Slightly Slimmer But Still Just As Friendly And Cute Petey. Yes, it is harder (and less fun) to say, but we're starting to get worried about his ever growing stomach. I weighed him last night and he's now up to 16 pounds. Which is a pound more than last time I weighed him. Which wasn't that long ago. He now is about 4 pounds heavier than either Little Boy or Little Girl. Being the internet junkie that I am, I decided to do a bit of digging about what is considered a healthy weight for a cat. Big. Mistake. The various sites say that the normal weight range is about 8-12 pounds. 8-12 pounds?!? Petey is so far gone from that it isn't even funny. If you look at the low end of the range, he is two complete cats!! And it turns out that Little Boy and Little Girl are also completely mis-named as they are both over the upper limit of 12 pounds. Bummer. They have such great names. But they aren't "little" after all. (I would blame Big Fat Petey for the misnomer given that he makes them look little, hence the names, but alas the names long pre-date Petey.) I was prepared to accept that we have an overweight cat, but three overweight cats? Poor kitties. We are baaad baaad owners. Good thing we don't have kids. So now we have two choices: (1) Kitty diet; or (2) Kitty work-out plan (yes, several websites recommended making sure your cat gets more exercise). Now I can't even get myself to work out. I can't begin to fathom trying to get cats to exercise more. They are cats after all. Exercise for them is jumping off the bed, walking down the hall to eat, followed by strenuous chewing of their food. Which led us to the current problem and really isn't much of an exercise program. This leaves us with only the diet as an option. The time has come to remove the never-empty food bowl which they can eat out of at will. We will have to start feeding them set amounts during the day (which will be super easy with our schedules). And I suspect that our currently happy kitties will soon be really really pissed off kitties. I can only imagine the revenge they will extract. If you don't hear from us for more than a few days, please send out a search party. I really don't want to enter the food chain. Especially in my own home. |
