Pit Stop 2-Road Rally in the South

The Southern Region

Objective:

Your task at this Pit Stop is to follow the directions given below and race your way through the South using a map. Delaware , Maryland , Virginia , West Virginia , North Carolina , South Carolina , Kentucky , Tennessee , Georgia , Florida , Alabama , Mississippi , Louisiana , Arkansas , Oklahoma , and Texas make up the Southern states.

Process:

1. Print out the map from the following link. ........... The Southern Region

2. Using the links below, find the answers to the following questions and plot them on the map.

3. Label the state on top of the line for each state, the capital underneath, and write any other answers on the back of the map. Make sure to number your answers.

4. As you plot the destinations on your map, make sure you connect them to visualize the course you are taking through the Southern States.

Q1  We will begin the Road Rally in the capital city of the first state admitted to the Union. This is one of the most northern states in the Southern states. Label the state and its capital.

Q2  From this capital city we will move westward to visit the US Naval Academy. Label the state and capital.

Q3  From this point we will follow the Chesapeake Bay south to the state that George Washington, our first president, was born. Label the state, capital, and name Washington's birthplace.

Q4  We will now take a turn to the Northwest and cross a mountain range to enter the “Mountain State”, which has a black bear for their state animal. Label the state and capital and name the mountain range we had to cross.

Q5  Next, we will visit Mammoth Cave National Park. Label the state and capital.

Q6  We will follow the Cumberland River to the state where Davy Crockett was born. Label the state, capital and name the city where Davy was born.

Q7  Now, we will cross the Mississippi River to the “Natural State” that was the home of one of our Presidents. He was born in the town of Hope. Label the state and the capital and name the President from Hope.

Q8  We will now drive west into the “Sooner State.” Label the state and the capital and explain why this state is known as the “Sooner State”.

Q9  When we cross the Red River, we will enter the second largest state of the Union. This state is home to the Alamo where many citizens lost their lives while seeking independence from Mexico. Label the state and the capital and name the city where the Alamo is located.

Q10  Moving east, we will cross the Sabine River and head to the “Pelican State” where the Mississippi runs through the capital city. The largest city in this state is known for the French Quarter and annual Mardi Gras celebration. Label the state and capital and name the largest city and the latest population number for that city.

Q11  Next, we continue east to the “Magnolia State”. Label the state and capital and name the state bird.

Q12  We will continue east as we move to the state that has a flag with a large red cross on a white background. Label the state and capital and list the major industries of this state.

Q13  We will now travel south to the “Sunshine State”. A Spanish explorer was looking for the “Fountain of Youth” when he discovered this state. Label the state and capital and name the explorer.

Q14  Now, travel north to the “Peach State”. Label the state and capital and list the state's major industries.

Q15  We will now move east to our final destination where President Andrew Jackson was born. Label the state and capital and name where President Jackson was born and what number president he was.
