Pit Stop 4-Story Time in the West

The Western Region

Objective:

  The West has many different landforms, climates, industries, and agriculture. Arizona , New Mexico , Alaska , California , Colorado , Hawaii , Idaho , Montana , Nevada , Oregon , Utah , Washington , and Wyoming make up the Western states. There are also many stories that can be told about how “The West was Won.” Your crew's task at this Pit Stop is to develop a fictional story about the Western States. Each crew will be given the task of researching three to four states and writing their story with those states in mind.

Use the information in the following links to explore the different websites. You will be using the information provided by the websites to help you research the Western States.

Your goal is to answer the following questions in your travel log.

1. What is the main source of revenue for each state?

2. What is the climate like in each state?

3. Who explored each state and where was their nation or state of origin?

4. What agricultural products come from each state?

5. What points of interest are located in each state?

After answering the above questions your crew is ready to write the story.

Using the information your pit crew collected; develop a main character that is traveling through the Western States that your crew was given, at any time in history; past, present, or future. The time period is your choice. Describe what you saw, how the weather was as you traveled from state to state, and what you ate along the journey.

After you have edited your story, you will be are ready to select pictures for your story. You will be able to find the pictures from your websites above. Remember to include the following:

 

  1. A minimum of five pictures.
  2. Captions for each picture.

At this point you are ready to publish your story. You will need to combine your story and your pictures into one final packet. You are now ready to present your story to the other pit crews.
