William Sharp, Sr. Will dated Nov 1836          Probated March 1838

 

 

In the name of God Amen!  I William Sharp sun [sic} of the County of Franklin and State if Tennessee being in sound mind and memory and knowing that it is appointed to all men once to die make and ordain this my last will and Testament, I will that all my just debts be speedily paid:

1st. I will and bequeath to my sons Richard and James Sharp all the tract of land I now live on containing one hundred and fifty acres and to my sons Richard and James Sharp a negro woman named Silvy.  Also I give unto my Son Richard Sharp, four negroes known by the names of Hannah, Milly, Charles and Davis and one horse bridle & saddle, one feather bed and cow and calf. 

I give unto my son William Sharp four negroes, two named Peter, one Willis, one Jenny, one horse bridle and saddle one feather bed cow and calf. 

I give unto my son Robert Sharp the tract of land whereon he now lives worth one thousand dallars, one negro boy named Jacob, one mare, bridle and saddle, one feather bed, one cow and calf and one hundred and eight dollars in cash. 

I give to my daughter Margaret Ferrell the tract of land whereon she now lives containing eighty acres, three negroes named Milly, Swinny and George, two horses, four cows and calves one bed and furniture; 

I give unto my son-in-law William Corn four negroes named Harriet, Violet, Ralph, Aaron and mare bridle and saddle, one feather bed, one cow and calf, two hundred and fifteen dollars in cash and Rifle Gun;

I give unto  my son-in-law John Hays one mare bridle and saddle, one feather bed, ten dollars in cash and one dollar;

I give unto my Grandaughter P Sammy Adams one negro girl named Sally and feather bed and cow and calf one horse and carryall; 

I give unto my Granddaugter Anna Farrell one horse bridle and saddle worth one hundred dollars, one feather bed and bedstead and furniture;

I give unto my son-in-law Abner Lasater one negro woman named Hanna and one mare bridle and saddle, one feather bed and cow and calf and one collar; I give unto my Grand daughter Mary Lasater one negro girl named Synthia; I give unto my three Grand sons James , Robert, and Richard Lasater one hundred dollars each to be paid out of the state;

All the property that is not specified in  this my last will is to be sold and equally divided between my six children Richard, James, William, Robert, Margaret  and Nancy. 

I do hereby nominate and appoint my sons Richard and James Sharp my Executors of this my last will and testament.

 

Revoking all others by me heretofore made both written and verbal, so testifying and confirming this my last Will and Testament. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my name and affixed my seal this 4th day of Nov. 1836.  It is also my will that if any of my lawful legatees should bring suit against this my last Will and Testament they are to have no part of any of the property named in this Will.  Signed, Sealed and delivered in the presence of us:

State of Tennessee

Franklin County:  County Court, March Term 1838.  This the Last Will and Testament of William Sharp Decd was produced in open court for Probate by one of the Executors therein named, Whereupon came James R. Slatter and William Hudson the subscribing Witnesses thereto who being duly sworn depose and say that the Testator was of sound mind and disposing memory at the time of making the same and that they subscribed the same as Witnesses at his request. Hereupon it is ordered to be recorded, Witness William W. Brazelton, Clerk of said County Court at office the 5th day of March 1838.

Note:  The children of William Sharp identified in this will are 1) Richard Sharp, 2) James Sharp, 3) William Sharp, 4) Robert Sharp, 5) Margaret Sharp-Ferel(sic), 6) daughter Sharp-Corn (husband William), 7) daughter Sharp-Hays (husband John), and 8) daughter Sharp-Lasater (husband Abner).  The daughter later identified as Nancy is most certainly the wife of William Corn, the Sharp-Hays daughter is Francis, and the Sharp-Lasater daughter is Mary.1
