In the matter of Invalid Pension No. 256,167. On the Seventeenth day of January A. D. 1881; personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace in and for the said, Edwin P. Wheeler aged 62 years a resident of Stephenton Centre, Rensselaer County. State of New York, and whose Post Office address is Stephentown Centre in the County and State aforesaid well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows:
That his occupation before enlistment in the service of the United States he was a Teamster; since his discharge from the service of the United States he has not been able to follow the business of a Teamster but has bought and sold and exchanged horses for himself and other people, until December 1879 from which time he has not been able to do anything to support himself, and he further states that he has not been able to perform, nor has he performed any manual labor since his discharge.
That three years previous to his enlistment - his place of residence was Lenox, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, that he removed to Lee, Berkshire County, Massachusetts in 1859, and resided there following his occupation as a Teamster until he enlisted as a Teamster in 1861.
That at the time of his discharge he was a resident of Lee, and remained there until 1865 when he removed to Stockbridge, Berkshire County, Massachusetts which was his place of residence though a part of each year he lived with his brother at Stephentown, Rennselaer County, New York, until 1879 when he went to live with his brother at said Stephentown and where he has lived ever since except an occasional visit to friends in Stockbridge.
He was injured in the head by being struck on the head by one King with the butt of a gun at Hudson in the state of New York while unloading goods and provisions for the soldiers. He was first treated by Dr. Sam'l Camp? who was second Regimental Surgeon.
Since his discharge he has been treated by Dr. John B. Gifford who is now deceased. Since his decease in 1867 he has been treated by Dr. Thos. Warner of Stockbridge, and in December 1879 he was treated by Dr. George Knickerbocker of Stockbridge who treated him for some kind of paralytic shock. He had rheumatism at Newberne, North Carolina but does not remember the names of physicians that treated him there, has had attacks of rheumatism more or less every year since, in 1872 had a severe attack of rheumatism so that he could not leave the house all winter, was treated by Dr. Dickerson now deceased, has been treated by the different Doctors mentioned for rheumatism and dizziness and pain in head etc, has also been treated for head troubles by Dr. Amos Dowd of Great Barrington, Berkshire County, Massachusetts.
