Chebon
Marshall’s involvement in Norman
City government goes back to
his childhood. At just the
age of seventeen, he managed
his first campaign – for the Norman City Council. His candidate
lost, but his love for Norman
never stopped growing.
His life is one of public service and public involvement. From the time he was just twelve, Chebon could always be found working in some time of campaign or involved in government at some level. When his friends were running for student council at Norman High or student government at OU, he was out managing campaigns for local, state and federal office.
At 26 Chebon went to Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. to serve as Chief of Staff for Oklahoma’s then Second District Congressman Brad Carson. As one of the youngest people serving in that role at the time, Chebon worked through some of the most historic times in our Nation’s history. The attacks of September 11 th, the I-40 bridge collapse and an historic ice storm that ravaged Eastern Oklahoma. During this time he learned how important it is that people not be stopped by bureaucratic red-tape, but rather they need their government – the government they pay for – to be responsive to their needs.
Even though the congressional district covered twenty-five counties of the Eastern part of Oklahoma, Chebon’s heart was never far from Norman. For those who visited his office, they saw a print of The Mont restaurant hanging over his desk, and he often told delegations from Oklahoma that there was a Congressman who represented Norman, but he would work for them too.
When the Congressman left office in January of 2005, there was never any question of where Chebon would go – it was back to Norman. He partnered with a friend to form a small public relations and advertising agency. When his business partner retired in 2007, he moved the company to Norman.
Chebon, who lives on Meadow Avenue, is a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church of Norman. He is a volunteer for the Norman United Way, has taught classes for the American Legion Boys State and in the past wrote and announced half-time shows for the Norman High School Marching Band.
