There was a time when we were more dependent upon ourselves, our families and communities. It was not a perfect world, but we were, well freer.
Somehow we relinquished much of our responsibilities and turned our choices over to others. The others I am referring to is government. Government at every level is now making many of our choices for us. From what the kids learn at school to what we can build on our property. These are choices that a responsible citizenry should make themselves.
When remembering the incidents of 9/11, we should not forget that it was private citizens who reduced the harm the criminals intended for our country. Cell phone calls to and from the Trade Centers, helped to greatly reduce the death toll and United Flight 93 that went down in Pennsylvania, prevented what could have been a much worse devastation.
In New Orleans, it was private citizens that helped one another
through what maybe among the worst catastrophes to hit our nation. Even now, it is the efforts of family members, friends, communities and charities that are leading the way in helping the victims of Katrina.
The chart on this page shows how complicated things can get when we turn over money and responsibilities to others for our care. Their intentions are good, but we just cannot get the best value for what we need.
We need to reduce our dependency on government and remain responsible citizens so that we can advance to even a greater society than we are now.
