Do you want to Switch?

A good place to start is at IBM's Windows-to-Linux roadmap:

IBM e-business architect Chris Walden is your guide through a nine-part developerWorks series on moving your operational skills from a Windows to a Linux environment. We begin our transition by examining some of the differences and similarities between Linux and Windows, and learn to stop rebooting all the time.

You have started to make the change from Windows to Linux. This may have been your decision, or may have come from "on high." In either case you are looking at the prospect of changing your procedures and tools from something very familiar to something perhaps completely unknown. Furthermore, you may need to train others on how to comfortably manage Linux. Administration is more than just following procedures. There is a creative side to successfully managing a computing environment. Making this transition can feel like changing from being an accomplished oil painter to doing welding sculpture.

The good news is that the open standards that drive Linux are the same standards that formed the foundation for your Windows administration. Some of the buzzwords are different, and the tools are a little different, but the underlying concepts are the same. The better news is that as you become accustomed to the Linux approach to doing things, you will have an even larger toolset to work with to control and maintain your environment. Linux's strength is in its stability and flexibility. As you learn to think in Linux, you'll accomplish more, automate more, and do more remotely. .... get the full deal at the link above.

Got 4 new Linux mags today...

Way too much spent, but Redhat 9.0 and Gentoo 1.4 were included... couldn't resist the urge to hold actual discs made by someone else... only had some of these once before...Redhat 6.2?
Anyway, finally upgraded my home boxen (2 of them) with Mandrake 9.2... such a nice distro! Very Smoooooth. Also did the same for my work laptop and the ReiserFS check found old partitions (i.e. deleted and formatted for the most part) on a faulty boot (had to power off system due to ACPI error... fixed now) and it came up... that's a first for Mandrake - checking ReiserFS. Excellent though.

.. Mentoring sounds good to me... but there are some users who will need very little hand holding..but I can hold lots of hands ... I really want Linux to get moving in our little community. I agree also with the after Thanksgiving meeting... As for the bylaws, MULUG's look fine, but we have not done anything with ours. I'm still not sure we really need bylaws as we are not trying to get some funding, but we'll see in time.

Time for some testing?

Fedora Core 1is out and I've got the isos. Had to download disc 1 again as it crashed my system each and every time I attempted the install. Maybe it will install this time (Monday night Nov. 10, 2003). Checked the md5sums appeared ok. Maybe we have bad media? The installer would crash after selection of packages, which I assume is when the actual formatting of the arranged partitions takes place.

So far so good... installing on a 2GB drive is tight too, but we'll see when all is said and done. T-8min and counting.

T-0min...

Wow!! it installed perfectly!!! the download was worth the wait too.

I'll let you know more as i explore this puppy.
