Midway's Hangar
The Restoration Facility for the USS MIDWAY museum
(Currently known as The San Diego Aircraft
Carrier Museum, on the USS Midway CV-41)
Lockheed S-3A Viking
The
Lockheed S-3 Viking was designed to meet a 1968 Navy specification for a replacement for
the Grumman S-2 Tracker anti-submarine search and strike aircraft. With a crew of four,
the S-3A was designed to carry a comprehensive array of avionics, as well as up to 60
sonabouys. The first S-3A flew on November 8, 1971, with the first carrier landings being
made in November 1973. |

The S-3A is currently parked in back of the hangar. It
is missing its nose, a number of windows, and some pieces of the body. This will be a
major project to restore this aircraft to display quality.

You can see that not only are the wings folded, but the tall tail is folded as well.
This aircraft is on loan from the National Museum of Naval Aviation.
