History of the US Miniature Bulldog

The Miniature Bulldog was first developed in America in the late nineteen eighties by experienced English Bulldog breeders with some twenty years of experience. The motive and goal was improved health and reduced size for apartment dwellers. But also there was improved behavior and obedience. The Miniatures want to please their people. They are very loyal, stay right with their people and mind where ever they go.

Development Formula

The methods of developing the Miniature Bulldog are kept secret to prevent experimenting causing harm to the new breed and fraudulently claiming the resulting hybrids are Miniature Bulldogs.

Techniques were used in the nineteenth century to develop the gentle pet bulldog of the 20th Century from the “bull baiting” “fighting bulldog” originally derived from the Bullmastiff. The gentle bulldog of the early part of the century was thinner and had longer legs and nose than the show quality bulldog of today that was developed over the past century. Both of these looks are available in the Miniature Bulldog of today in the Athletic and the Classic. The Athletic and Classic types are equally chosen by pet lovers of today according to life style and taste.

Specific Development Formula

A specific formula of modification was used to develop two different original bloodlines of the Miniature Bulldogs. Adding in different double champion and other excellent AKC English Bulldog bloodlines expanded these two Miniature bloodlines. This was done in a careful way through selective breeding to reduce the chances of genetic defects. The miniatures are having no major health problems. The registry includes family relationship as well as pedigree. The miniatures are entered by the registered breeders into the Miniature Bulldog International Registry for the purposes of recording the pets family history and pedigree to maintain quality and improve the blood line.

Bulldog of the 21st Century-The Miniature

Modern veterinary medicine has improved with technology on the coat tails of modern human medicine, which has enhances the health and development of all animals while increasing the cost of veterinary medicine astronomically. So, the time was right for a Healthy Miniature Bulldog in times of high vet costs, apartments size limits and the public desire for a smaller, more active, highly trainable, well behaved and obedient Bulldog pet in all social situations. So in the eighties and nineties the Miniature Bulldog was developed with a specific formula with the help of modern veterinary medicine for the 21st Century!

Miniatures In The Development Years

In the eighties and nineties the new Miniature puppies were mostly sold in the south central states. But in the early ‘90’s whole Miniature litters were sold to individuals in large cities who placed them with adoring owners. It then became a requirement to buy two litters and training to be a breeder. All over the country the Miniature Bulldogs began appearing as travelers in the central states learned of the new breed and its advantages for families and active individuals. In the late nineties Miniatures Bulldogs became available internationally when newspapers began putting their ads on the Internet and breeders decided on a pool web site, centralized airline departure, health examination, and health assurance plan. The first pup from the pool web site went to Western Canada. 21st Century Miniature Bulldog owners are families and individuals who want a small healthy well-behaved, loving, obedient protective companion.

Miniature Bloodline Development

Earlier owner records were not kept of the first miniature puppies placed as pets. Often these were placed by the litter to individuals in large cities who placed the pups introducing them to public. The miniature bulldog registry was started in 1995 with the pedigree lineage going back to the original miniature bulldog’s bloodlines of the 1980’s. Of course, the full size English Bulldog bloodlines used in the development of the miniature can be traced back as far as AKC records will take them. These bloodlines include champions and other excellent healthy bloodlines. It was believed that while champions were the source of great Bulldog looks some were also the source of genetic defects as well, so excellent non champion bloodlines were also used for balance of health and behavior. So looks were compromised for health, behavior, obedience and personality.

Registry

The miniature bulldog registry was started in 1995 by the “English Bulldog Miniature Association” consisting of the breeders and owner members whose puppies were automatically registered with the acquisition of the pup. The reason for the Miniature Bulldog Registry is to maintain and improve the health and quality of the Miniature Bulldog and there in lays the real prestige of the registry. Most people who acquire Miniatures were not concerned about papers and those who did wanted value assurance for their investment. Since the purpose of the Miniature Registry is to maintain and improve quality of the breed, all pups are automatically registered to the owners in the pet registry and the registration is transferable. As a part of registry owners are required to fill out a form at the age of one year giving feedback about all the Miniature Bulldog Standards including health.

The breeder registry includes the breeders and their stock registered to breed. The breeder is responsible for keeping accurate reliable records including pedigrees of breeding stock.

Miniature Bulldog Breeding Standards

The miniature bulldog has genetic pedigree development since the nineteen eighties. In overall, there is a relatively small number of Miniatures for a new breed so it is important to control the breeding and family pedigree of registered pups. To accomplish this, stiff breeder requirements were established in the early nineties. Registered breeders have miniatures registered as breeding Miniature Bulldogs. Miniatures are selectively breed for miniature standards that include –*health, loving loyalty, behavior, obedience, protectiveness and personality, as well as looks. The looks standard is meant to emulate both early nineteen hundreds Bulldog standards for athletics and current English Bulldog Standards for classics without compromise to health and the other Miniature Bulldog Standards* above, so important to 21st century Miniature Bulldog owners. Miniatures as yet are not shown which minimizes pressure to breed for looks compromising health.

Blood lines

Some of The AKC English Bulldog Champion Blood lines The Original IKC English Bulldog Miniature:

“Ch Smasher” Line, “Ch Mapo” Line, “CH Puggie Bull” Line, “Chmaribull’s” Line, “Ch buster” Line, Ch My Buddy” Line, Ch Eddie” Line, “Ch golden” Line, “Ch Maribulls” Line, “Ch. Docs Lady” Line, “ChPine Husker’s” Line, “Ch hargoe’s” Line, “Ch Fran’s Show Stopers” Line, “Ch Gypsyies” Line, “Ch Rich” Line And More.

Adding New English Bulldog Blood Lines

When new English Bulldog blood lines are added it is done with double champion bloodlines and other health quality bloodlines but it is done in a very special selective breeding way to reduce the chance of introducing genetic defects into the Miniature line. And the lines are monitored for genetic problems so that if a genetic defect is discovered that line can be discontinued with adjustments.

Breeder Requirements

Breeder requirements include acquiring two litters and training in an apprenticeship where dedication to the quality of the breed is basic. Sometimes this means down breeding on looks for health and the other Miniatures standards when prices are based on looks which obviously requires breeder discipline. But if these standards were not adhered to the miniature could enter into health decline like full size. Miniature people want health first, personality with behaved obedience second and looks and/or size third. Many individuals would like to breed Miniature like the full size are independently breed, but few are prepared for the dedication and requirements to expand the breed correctly.

At such time in the future when ample numbers of Miniature Bulldogs have been produced with ample pedigree history, changing the breeder requirements may include pet owners being able to register as breeders.

It is important to plan for the future. It is believe that it is in the interest of all bulldog lovers to provide record recording for all types of bulldogs from experimental breeding for research and the best interest of the people and the animals for those who wish to participate.

Copy Cat Miniatures

Aggravating and confusing the full size Bulldog club members are the appearance of copy cat Miniature Bulldog claims that include mixing full size Bulldogs with another breed calling it a Miniature Bulldog and some are re-labeling other Bulldog breeds as the Miniature Bulldog. One hybrid breeder claimed to have the Miniature Bulldog program. These Hybrids are not correctly called Miniatures because these other combinations do not have the proven genetic makeup with kept pedigree records of the Miniature Bulldog. Therefore all these do not meet the balanced Miniature Bulldog Standards for health, loving loyalty, behavior, obedience, protectiveness and personality even though looks may be similar.

English Bulldog Hybrids

Even though Miniature Bulldog development methods have been kept secret, since the new breed first appeared on the Internet, experimenters have begun to advertise dogs they have obtained by mixing English Bulldog with another small breed dog calling them Miniatures. French Bulldogs have been mixed with the English Bulldog which would actually be a French/ English hybrid. Some have shared off springs and mixed different breeds with an original Miniature Bulldog and advertised these hybrids as Miniature Bulldogs. These different combinations are accurately described as small English Bulldog hybrids just as mixing different breeds with wolf is referred to as a Wolf Hybrid.

For years there have been English Bulldog hybrids resulting from accidental breeding sold as family pets for a nominal amount by the embarrassed frustrated breeder who was kind hearted and didn’t drown them in hostility as being impure as many breeders did. The people who got these found they had the best dog of their life, but there was no way to replace it years later after it was gone. But now some people are deliberately breeding large breed English Bulldog hybrids. Each of these types, large and small, of English Bulldog hybrids must be evaluated by the interested person on the individual merits of each hybrid litter against the known knowledge of the various other included breeds.

Avoiding Potentially Vicious Hybrids

English Bulldog Hybrids mixed with breeds known to be aggressive should be avoided as potentially dangerous and existing ones should be neutered. This is because bulldog tenacity is being mixed with aggressiveness which is what the original fighting bulldog was and why it was modified with Chinese Pug the 18th century. Most state, counties, and municipalities have vicious animal laws that can result in an unsuspecting owner of a vicious animal being in serious trouble. Ethical hybrid breeders or owners would give the prospective buyer the names of the breeds and the percentage of each mixed with bulldog.

International Kennel Club Information

The International Kennel Club holds in duplicate for the future the Miniature Bulldog Registry. One requirement of the International Kennel Club is to monitor for genetic breeding defects in order to advise the breeder for the purpose of improving the breed by changing lines that produce genetic defects. Breeders may register in duplicate other registered kennel club lines to control for quality and improvement in their lines. English Bulldog Hybrid Research and Recording

The International Kennel Club for clarity and research is considering keeping records of English bulldog hybrids that are the result of planned breeding including method, intent and results as well as breeding that result from serendipity or chance breeding of English bulldog with other breeds producing hybrids. In this way accurate information and follow up can be available for all interested Bulldog owners, breeders and dog lovers of all types and persuasions.

Since the International Kennel Club, IKC, is considering recording these, this would provide the opportunity for genetic experimental research and for keeping track of English Bulldog hybrids both large and small. English Bulldogs mated with other breeds most often has an improving effect on health and personality in the hybrid pups. So the IKC believes this will be a positive decision and will provide knowledge of what is transpiring in planned and accidental breeding producing English Bulldog hybrid pups and the understanding of which seems important to all Bulldog lovers.

Early and Sudden Death and Vet Health Warning for the Full Size

Hundreds of reported full size bulldog deaths have been reported by owners to have occurred from the ages of six weeks to three years. The losses are being reported by owners calling about Miniatures. Many vets are advising their clients who have money concerns to select a breed other than the full size Bulldog.

Many people are unaware from TV, shows and public sightings of the more independent stubborn nature of the full size Bulldog that leads to accidental death from accidents. And, as well, the epidemic of major genetic health problems of the full size often leading to early sudden death or early death after extended costly illness. Shocking are the many full-size owners who have notified of their losses and despair.

And often the breeder would not adjust for young puppies with autopsy proven genetic defects. These people want the same bulldog look in a healthy, take-everywhere active pet that minds and wants to please, but they are hurt and reluctant to trust again. These complaints number in the hundreds, so determined people wanting full size English Bulldogs should check out other older siblings from the lines for health and verify that the breeder line is free of serious genetic defects.

But the breeders are not responsible for the vet bills that complaining people say are from hundreds to thousands of dollars and the only way out was to put their beloved pup to sleep which they couldn’t do. So if money is an issue and a Miniature can not be afforded vets are advising their clients to seek another healthy breed. The full size Bulldog has become a dog once again for the wealthy like in late 17th and early 18th century England. But if you are lucky enough to get a healthy one costs will not be unreasonable.

English Bulldog Death Case in point.

The problem is that once a bulldog passes away from genetic development or negligence causes buy another person other than the breeder there is a tremendous amount of pain. The individual suffering the loss is so grieved and hurt that the chance of making it right is often not granted the breeder whether or not it is their fault.

Some breeders see this as a finical relief and cool; the buck is first.

But if the breeder is concerned, the breeder is often not given a second chance as the case below points out. The pain in worth more than the price of a dog.

From: "Dick"

Good afternoon,

I contacted your office today 12/15/00 about the Mini Bulldogs. I'm very interested in the English Bulldog breed and as I told you we had to put our 6 month old to sleep because of the heart murmur. We bought her locally so I don’t know all the shipping procedures and all. I'm going to do more investigating this time around. My wife couldn't stand losing another part of her family. I would appreciate any information you could send.

Thanks,

Dick

Asked, Dick, whose name has been changed, reported by phone the breeder offered to back up the loss but they didn’t want any pup from that breeder again! So it is important for a breeder to do their dead level best to get it right the first time if they don’t want to hurt people and not be able to make it up.

Bulldog Lovers Rivalry

It has been reported that some full size club fans are upset by the existence of the Miniature Bulldog and facts about bulldog losses being reported. Many are denying the existence of the new breed with negative campaign messages against Miniature Bulldogs as though Miniatures were a random mix breed not worthy consideration. This instead of the well planned development of a new and timely healthy breed with pedigree records of breed stock being kept from the beginning.
