FINDING BULLDOG FACTS
1999 First World Wide Announcement of Bulldogs Miniatures.
World wide the English Bulldog Miniature was announced exclusively in spring 1999 on Pets4You.com with a new breed page English Bulldog Miniatures. The Purebred Miniature English Bulldog began in the eighties and was developed through the nineties establishing a new rare breed announced world wide in 1999 when there was no miniature bulldog any where on the world wide web.
The establishing breed club of the English Bulldog Miniature, including breeders and owners, is the Miniature English Bulldog Association of this site. These miniatures are in a club registry that lead to the genetic tracking registry of International Kennel Club, IKC. All Purebred English Bulldog Miniatures are registered in IKC by the breeders at breeder expense so that all are in genetic tracking for breed improvement. The group has not announced plans to approach and apply for AKC breed status. The group is meeting the requirements for its members to take the decision to apply for AKC recognition at an appropriate time in the future should owners and breeders choose to take such a decision in the future.
Purebred English Bulldog Miniature
The developers and breeders of the first miniature bulldog to be offered world-wide was to develop this new rare breed to verified standards of personality, behavior, trainability and health for integration into modern family life as a help mate. The intent was not for official breed show or competition in looks standards. The primary goal of the purebred miniature was for personality and behavior standards of a cute miniature bulldog with looks as a secondary standard. Offered were several varieties like some AKC breeds. The varieties include Classic, Athletic with Classic Athletic. Descriptive variety categories included Classic Traditional, Classic Standard and Super Athletic. With development beginning in the eighties and continuing through the nineties, it was first miniature bulldog and was offered as a new rare breed world wide as the English Bulldog Miniature in 1999. Since it was the first and was a developed as a new established breed before offering it world wide international introduction it is now the Purebred English Bulldog Miniature. They are bred for each variety of classification and category as AKC breeds. The Purebred Miniature registry was placed in the International Kennel Club, IKC genetic tracking registry where all pups must be registered by the breeder for follow up. This results in improved breeding over time for the betterment of the breed.
Since miniatures are deliberately breed for each variety, each classification and category are true English Bulldog Miniature bloodlines. The varied looks are similar to several bulldogs and small AKC breeds appealing to a wide group of people on looks, both bulldogs and other small breeds all wanting the personality and behavior standards of the purebred miniature. These variety classifications and categories are also a grading standard that lets the client pick the look and type from which the client wishes to choose still getting the same basic personality and behavior standard which is the primary goal! While the Classic is vary popular of course, the Athletics are becoming the most popular.
Clients may choose from appropriate size, looks and price grading all meeting the personality standard. There has always been a wide variation in bulldog looks even in the same litters and grading gives the public the choice it wants in selecting by their tastes. So the purebred English Bulldog Miniature in its variety classification and categories is about completing the family with a “want to please Hi IQ personality to looks of choice.
Bulldog History It is well understood that the Bulldog was originally a dog bred to fight bulls in 16 th century England and that it was a Bull Mastiff mix or hybrid that would hang on to the bull's nose for dear life in mortal battle. In their development they were bred to be narrow in the hind quarters and broad in the front for when the bull would fling them about as the bulldog clamped down their strong developed jaws on the bulls nose. When this bullfighting with dogs was outlawed near the end of the 16 th century (1790s), there was a strong desire to save this courageous breed for family pets. So to make it more sociable, a hybrid was created, by adding Chinese Pug in the early 17 th century (1800s). This led to the bulldog of today.
But at the beginning of the 20 th century the Bulldog was a much more athletic, lean, long leg dog. In the last half of the 20 th Century a “show” contest trend was to make the bulldog much more exaggerated in looks and heavier with more and more thicker wrinkles. This is alleged to have led to more and more poor health in many bulldogs especially as ordinary breeders breed for such looks in ordinary bulldog pets.. This led to common vet health warnings to their clients. The bulldog became too big, was a bit stubborn and independent and too expensive for many in a work-a-day modern world. People began experimenting with designer bulldogs of all types for better health and some for smaller size as well. Over time there have been a number of developed bulldog breeds some of which have been accepted by AKC.
Miniature English Bulldog History These modern day family's needs led to the research and development of the miniature beginning in the seventies and eighties with development forward through the nineties. But world wide there was no knowledge of a miniature other than the extinct toy bulldog of England written about in papers that became extinct after leading to the French bulldog hybrid with both rose and stand up ears. The perky ears won out and it became AKC accepted as the French Bulldog. There was an experiment in the US in the early 20 th century of a French-English Bulldog that didn't make it as a breed. Out of the several experiments to develop a miniature bulldog in the last quarter of the 20 th century (1980s and 90s) an ideal miniature was developed based on personality first and looks second and also seeking good health, the English Bulldog Miniature. But the personality potential was not immediately recognized until there was much feedback from the families who acquired these minis all through the nineties. The result has been public acceptance of a “want to please Hi IQ Personality English Bulldog Miniature that serves the modern family as a therapeutic supportive friend beyond all expectations. The Purebred English Bulldog Has been recognized in California as a “therapy dog”.
All Bulldogs And Most Accepted Breeds Are Hybrids.
The original Bulldog was a hybrid mix including Bullmastiff for bullfighting in England outlawed in the late 1700s. The Chinese Pug was added to make it a sociable family pet. There are few original breeds all coming from the wolf. The wolf and man came to share food and be friends the most graphic and moving film example being in the scenes of “Dances With Wolves” between Kevin Costner and the wolf “Two Socks”. In ancient History this kind of symbiotic relationship lead to the selected breeding and development of all dog breeds. So the word hybrid and bulldog have always realistically been linked together. Other hybrid mixes led to the development of recognized bulldog breeds such as the American Bulldog. There are many hybrid bulldog experiments going on today trying to improve health and other advantages as well as other breed combinations in the modern day “designer dogs”. A few lead to AKC accepted breeds.
Establishing A New Breed For Long Term Acceptance.
The breed content determines what kind of behavior, personality, trainability the canine has. The process for acceptance begins with breed clubs that keep records and defend the benefits of the new breed until its members successfully apply in the individual countries to a breed establishing registry. And in the U.S. that is AKC. It takes a few years to establish consistent results in a new breed. This is because of throwbacks which is nature's way of trying to keep things the same or normal. So new breed program should be in no hurry to get to the promised land of acceptance of breed establishing registry such as AKC. They should first satisfy their strong client supporters who someday choose for their need to take a new rare breed to a national breed establishing registry for survival of the breed past the life time of the developers and the owners in the original years. There can be a temptation to get on a registry for commercial reasons. But if the breed being developed has merit for the modern family its Breed club registry will fine for the public to accept this club registry if the new breed truly has merit. As these are required for breed acceptance by the world clubs establishing breeds such as AKC
Business Registries
Many in the public don't want a mix-breed experiment and don’t want to take the time to investigate a pet and wish to use an established registry as a guide. They want a recognized breed for their hard earned dollar and often the use of a credit card to pay for it. So a whole industry of breeders and registries have sprung up to sell the public “dogs with papers” for a profit. Every alphabet combination of letters are used for the business registries that sounds credible is in use. And of course there is a great deal of fraud involved. The purpose of which is to get more money. But it does take a certain amount of money to pay for the production and placement of pups which has is quite expensive.
2001- 2002 Mini Development
A Minnesota bulldog breeder began a new designer miniature bulldog breeder of Pug and English noting the full-size AKC bulldog was develop with Pug in the early 1800s and that breeder's Minnesota friends began by mixing French and English which ultimately led to the English French Pug combination. In this hybrid the French contributed to size and shape without departing from English bulldog origins for a rose type ears and the breeder noted that pug contributed to natural breeding and birth. Today according to the breeder it is mostly English and a small part French and Pug having been added for health and breeding advantage; It is described as cute, sweet and comical with positive personality and is more active than the AKC Bulldog. And about the same time Australian breeders began there experiment in developing an miniature bulldog. This was designer breed development as well with a couple being shipped to the U.S. according to the breed developers.
Bulldog Club of America, BCOA, (full-size)
The BCOA was very upset by the advent of the miniature in 1999 and was even more upset by the following more and different miniature offerings in 2001 and 2002 and 2004. Initially they put out a site page on the net that said there was no such thing as a miniature bulldog and bulldog breeders related the message to people who begged the question. But the public disagreed because they had a need for a small bulldog with outstanding behavior. This competition started a controversy over the miniature bulldog that intensified when other breeders began offering a small version of the regular bulldog. Since it was a bulldog and small it was advertised as the original miniature bulldog. But there is public acceptance of small bulldogs and there is a trend to go positive. And people with small AKC bulldogs began asking themselves “do I have a miniature?”. Interested AKC breeders should work on reducing the size of smaller AKC bulldogs but not necessarily runts which may be small because of genetic defects that would reproduce. People who want the AKC bulldog are more and more moving to places with weight restrictions and many are at an age where they can’t care for a large dog any more.
Reduced Size Regular Bulldog Breeders & Clubs
As the trend of bulldog size got larger in the U.S. some breeders worked at having small bulldogs, but not without health difficulty in the seventies and eighties because breeding runts together can result in breeding in defects that contributed the nusual small size. The breeding of consistently smaller sized bulldogs over time carefully using unrelated bloodlines can result in a smaller and more healthy bulldogs worthy of the acceptance by AKC as “Miniature Bulldog” for apartments, condominiums and other living situations with contract weight restrictions preventing bulldog lovers from having an AKC bulldog. .

CONCLUSION
Potential owners of small bulldogs need to carefully determine the characteristic they are looking for in terms of personality, looks, type, cost, and breeder communication and relationship. Then because the ads are mixed closely together be careful in going between sites and pup pictures so that one does not confuse the descriptions, pups and breeders clicking the green arrows going back and forth.
