When I went there was no water at the course so all you you had was dirt and rocks. The landscaping was not great. The course wasn't difficult, but was not so easy. The price was $6.00 per person and I found that to be a little high. Around the course wasn't too bad.

This course is a part of the now-familiar 'sports complex' design that includes a golf driving range and other attractions, including LazerTag, making it appealing to kids and adults.

The course is cleverly designed, with some 'natural' obstacles, including rocks as well as bends and hills that make a hole-in-one pretty much impossible except for sheer (and rare) luck. This challenges the player to think through his next stroke, understand some basic geometry and above all, not use too much force when hitting the ball, all mini-golf basics.

Par is 42 and I found that a bit low, considering the many par-2 holes that can easily require 3 or 4 strokes to sink the ball if your tee shot is even a little bit off in some way. I did manage two holes-in-one in two games but still couldn't make par, demonstrating the score-killing quirks of the course layout, who's (unknown) designer I mentally cursed more than once during the sunny, early spring afternoon I visited the course.

The atmosphere at the Golf Center of Connecticut is bright and busy. The course is noticeably well-maintained. The music played is mostly inoffensive 'classic' pop/rock and bit distracting at times - but you get used to it. A full snack bar and clean bathrooms round out the appeal of the Golf Center and make it a worthwhile venue for a pleasant round (or two) of miniature golf - as your second game is half-price.

For all that, it's not a course I would make a special or long trip in order to play. The price is steep compared to other, equal-or-better courses in the area and an upfront $1.00 ball deposit is required to play, which I found a bit off-putting, as it raises the admission price to almost $10. for one game of miniture golf. I found that excessive. However, I may visit the course again, if for no other reason than to break par.

The Golf Center of Connecticut mini golf course is a pretty decent place to play mini golf. The course has a few good things to it. The main thing I enjoyed about this course is the design/layout of it. It all flowed together quite well...progression from hole to hole was quite clear and it had that good and proper feeling to it. I also liked the landscaping to the course. The man made mountain (on a smaller human scale of course) was quite a nice touch. I liked how they incorporated a hole to be played out on the very top. The small creek/stream was a nice touch as well. The sound of running water added a nice relaxing touch to the atmosphere. The last item that I quite liked was the use of insect repellent machines located through out the course. It made the game more pleasurable and less painful, thanks to eliminating those pesky mosquito bites. But there are a few items about this course I didn't like. The first thought that comes to mind is the course par (a 42). I thought that was extremely low. Many of the holes where quite challenging and I don't see how some of them could be 2 pars...when they easily required 3 or 4. The general maintenance of the course is sufficient at best, but one thing that bugged me quite often is all the mulch, leaves, small rocks, and twigs on the course. Many times my friends and I would have to clean away debris in the path of our anticipated shots. This took away from time playing and some of the fun. It would be a lot nicer if the employees swept the course a few times a day to keep it clean and obstruction free. I also thought the price for a game was a bit high...along with a deposit charge for the putter and ball which brought the price up to $10 if I?m not mistaken. The only other compliant I have is the amount of rowdy and immature kids out on the course. I know mini is fun for everyone of all ages...but some of like to play the game and try to do our best to get to or under par. It is kind of hard when you have immature adolescent kids goofing off and being a distraction.

Other than that, the Golf Center of Connecticut in Shelton mini golf course is pretty decent. It sure beats playing mini golf at Smiles or HoJo's where the courses are in very poor shape. Do give this course a try. It's quite fun and enjoyable and a sure challenge at what the par is currently set to.

This course is very intersting. Just a warning: Be careful on the holes that are by the water.

Our Review Criteria

  • All numerical criteria are on a basis of 1-5. For most items, 1 is worst, and 5 is best.
  • Overall: The reviewer's overall opinion of the course. 1 or 2 is not good. 3 is average, but nothing special. 4 is worth a visit, and 5 is an exceptional course.
  • Maintenance: How well the course is kept.
  • Creativity: Is this a cookie-cutter type of course, or does it have some flair?
  • Price: How does the price of the course compare to the quality?
  • Fun: Simply put, how fun is the course?
  • Difficulty: 1-5, 1 easiest, 5 hardest
  • A number of older reviews have a "Playability" rating. This indicates how able is one to play the course. Things like bent cup rims, twigs, clogged pipes, and too-difficult holes were included here. (These considerations are now part of Maintenance; Creativity was added in place of Playability in 2005.)
