Purpose: My effort is two fold, first to build a Family Tree tracing our roots back into Europe. Second to share information that associates all Gerschoffers to a single Family Tree for others to look back and see their family ties as well as promote interest in our roots.
Pictures: I have provided pictures when available which are attached to the Family Tree. If you would like to share some pictures on the Family Tree please get them to me.
Genealogy: I started to do this knowing of about a dozen Gerschoffers' and thinking it would be a quick and simple process. I have found over 100 Gerschoffers' at this point and I still do not have all of them tied to the Family Tree. The Gerschoffer brothers Joseph, Matthew and Andrew emigrated from Austria-Hungary in the late 1800's. They settled in South Bend, Indiana in a Magyar (Hungarian) neighborhood where Matthew and Andrew married and raised families. Joseph died in an industrial accident in 1904 leaving a wife and daughter in Hungary. All of the Gerschoffers' I have identified are related to these two brothers. Many of the Gerschoffers' remain in South Bend and vicinity today. I have also found living relatives in Hungary as well as earlier generations of Gerschoffer's now deceased. My resources have been Internet, mail, email, census records, church records, marriage records, birth certificates, death certificates, graveyards, LDS Family History Center, word of mouth and the help of a cousin in Sopron, Hungary. Through these resources I have met some wonderful and helpful individuals, many whom I have even been able to get together and visit with. Some have been reluctant to share information. My intent is gather my findings, document and share them with any of our Family Tree members who are interested. Gerschoffers' that I have identified and not been able to tie to the Family Tree I call unlinked. Records for several generations of Gerschoffer's are traced to the village of Hegykö, Hungary. Which is located near Sopron, Hungary in Northwestern Hungary not far from the border and Austrian state of Burgenland. It would be exciting to see more share in my interest.
