Highway Bridge Rail Designs

Last modified: June 7, 2001

Most bridges from the 1980's and later use a variation on the "Jersey barrier" and do not differ much in the railing style from state to state. The styles shown here are mostly from the 1950's-70's when the rail styles were more distinct.

I-10 near Avondale
A newer version of the bar design, used in Arizona up to the late 70s. These photos are from Interstate 10 west of Phoenix. The bar design shown on this page for Oregon, along with the bar design of the first one shown for Hawaii (below), is also seen in Arizona.

Hawaii

The style of rail on the left is used in many states. On the right is a style similar to the California flat rail design.

I-H1 at I-H2
This the most common style I noticed in Hawaii, a bar mounted on top of a "Jersey barrier".
Also see my Hawaii Roads page.

New Mexico / Texas

Oregon / Washington

I-5 Portland rail  North end of 405 from 5
I-5 Washington Bridge
This is the bar style as seen in Portland, Oregon (top) and Tacoma, Washington (bottom). Note that in the Washington design the bar is oriented away from the road and the Oregon design orients the bar toward the road.

This is an overpass over BC 99 just north of the Canada/US border. Note the font used on Canadian signs.
